Problem

With the default loan duration set in Settings → Loans, a request for a title whose only copy has a scheduled loan (or a reservation) starting inside that default window failed in a confusing way on every surface:

  • Book page calendar: it proposed start + default anyway; flatpickr silently dropped that return date (it fell on a disabled day), the request went out without end_date, the server filled in the full default again and refused with a bare "No copies available for the requested dates".
  • User-area forms (POST /user/loan, POST /user/reserve, which the Mobile API delegates to): not_available, nothing else, and no way to ask for a shorter loan.
  • Admin "Create loan": "All copies already have an active or scheduled loan. Wait for a return", which is not what blocks the operator.
  • Same bare refusal on admin approval, loan date edit, admin reservation create/edit and a reader moving their own reservation.

The reader or operator was never told how many days were actually possible. The conflict overrides both the default duration and the configured maximum, and nothing surfaced that.

Change

One authority: app/Support/LoanWindow.php. From the blocked days CapacityService::unavailableDatesInRange() reports, it derives first_conflict_date, max_end_date, max_duration_days, words them in the current locale ("Durata massima del prestito: N giorni (restituzione entro il D). Dal D' il libro è già prenotato."), and carries them through a 302 as query parameters that are validated before being echoed. No figures when the start day itself is blocked, nor when the next day is (a window shorter than one day is no loan: the generic refusal stays, and the calendars say "Da questa data di inizio non è possibile alcun prestito: dal D il libro è già prenotato. Scegli un'altra data." before sending). unavailableDatesInRange() takes the same loan/reservation exclusions as hasFreeCapacity(), so the row being approved, edited or moved is never its own conflict.

Every capacity refusal of a new or edited window now explains

Surface Before After
ReservationsController::createReservation (public calendar) generic 400 error: no_capacity, message, first_conflict_date, max_end_date, max_duration_days
UserActionsController::loan() / reserve() / changeReservationDate not_available plus max_loan_days, max_end_date, blocked_from; book page and account page render the explanation
Mobile API POST /reservations not_available generic same message, meta.max_duration_days / max_end_date / first_conflict_date
PrestitiController::store() / update() (admin create and date edit) generic redirect figures in the query; create form and loans list explain
LoanApprovalController::approveLoan generic JSON message + figures
ReservationsAdminController::store() / update() capacity_full plus figures; both forms explain

Return date from the app (Mobile API 1.8.1 → 1.8.2). POST /user/loan and POST /user/reserve accept an optional end_date, bounded like the public endpoint (a real day, not before the start, within max_loan_duration_days, else invalid_date / max_duration_exceeded). The Mobile API passes it through and maps the new refusal; OpenAPI documents the field, the 409 meta and max_loan_duration_days on the availability payload. The Android counterpart is fabiodalez-dev/Pinakes-Android#53.

The same values to every calendar. GET /api/libro/{id}/availability now carries loan_duration_days (the default, capped by the maximum the request endpoints enforce) and max_loan_duration_days, from one source:

  • Public book page: loanWindowFrom() searches for the first blocked day through the whole configured maximum, so a manual pick can never jump past a conflict to a day that is free again; the return picker's maxDate is the day before the conflict, or start + maximum; a note under the field explains the cap; clicking a red or orange day explains why it cannot be picked; preConfirm refuses an inverted range, a range crossing the conflict, or one over the maximum before sending.
  • Admin "Create loan" (crea_prestito.php): proposes the shortened deadline with the same explanation under "Data Scadenza"; prefers the payload's duration when it arrives; the picker stays free (staff may be about to cancel the other commitment); availability arriving after a deadline was typed only pulls it back when it crosses the blocked day.
  • Admin "Create reservation" (crea_prenotazione.php): defaults on the application clock (not the browser's), min attributes, and the selected title's availability for the chosen borrower stops the proposed deadline the day before a scheduled loan, with the same explanation, instead of a capacity_full after the fact.

Locales: four new messages in it_IT, en_US, de_DE, fr_FR, da_DK (scripts/ci-check-locales.py ✓).

Not changed, reported for a follow-up: renewals (PrestitiController::renew, bulk extension, NCIP RenewItem) refuse an extension that crosses a later commitment with extension_conflicts and no maximum. That is an extension of an existing loan and needs its own wording ("renewal possible at most until D"). NCIP RequestItem answers with a protocol problem element, not a sentence.

Tests

tests/loan-window-cap.unit.php — 20 database-backed checks (sandboxed titles and patrons, another patron's prenotato loan 5 days out): CapacityService and LoanWindow agree on the window; the availability payload colours the right days; createReservation explains the cap with and without an end date, keeps the generic refusal when the start day is blocked, accepts the capped request, keeps its max-duration, inverted-range and past-start errors; POST /user/loan and POST /user/reserve carry the figures through the redirect and accept the capped end_date, refuse one past the maximum or before the start; a tampered query is ignored; a second free copy means no cap; the public view contract.

tests/loan-window-surfaces.unit.php — 17 database-backed checks on the remaining surfaces and the edge cases:

  1. admin create loan crossing the scheduled loan: no_copies_available with the figures
  2. the admin form renders them as the sentence
  3. admin edit of a loan due date: cap measured from the first added day, own loan excluded
  4. approving a pending request: 400 JSON with the figures and the sentence
  5. admin reservation crossing the loan: capacity_full with the figures
  6. the same reservation ending the day before is created
  7. extending it across the loan: capacity_full, own row excluded
  8. a reader moving their own reservation: not_available with the figures
  9. Mobile without end_date: 409 not_available, sentence as error.message, figures in meta
  10. Mobile with the capped end_date: 201
  11. Mobile end_date beyond the maximum: 422 max_duration_exceeded
  12. Mobile end_date before the start: 422 invalid_date
  13. the availability payload carries both durations
  14. LoanWindow::redirectParams carries exactly the three figures
  15. a conflict on the next day: no figures
  16. public request with the next day booked: generic refusal, no "0 days"
  17. Mobile request on that title: 409 with no figures in meta

tests/loan-request-capped-by-scheduled-loan.spec.js — Playwright: the calendar proposes the day before the loan, shows the note and submits; the server refusal for the full window carries the figures.

tests/loan-coherence-audit.unit.php re-pinned to the calendars' loanWindowFrom() construct (the invariant it guards still holds).

Verification done here

  • php -l on every changed file; the three inline scripts syntax-checked with node after stubbing PHP tags.
  • LoanWindow exercised in PHP and loanWindowFrom() in node; the coherence audit and every database-free unit suite pass locally.
  • ci-check-locales.py ✓, ci-playwright-policy.js check ✓.
  • Not run here: the two DB-backed suites and the Playwright suite (no database in this environment). CI runs them.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Correzioni

Review fixes and local validation — 2026-10-21

Reader requests, moved reservations, the web calendar and Mobile availability now use one effective default: min(loan_duration_days, max_loan_duration_days). Omitting end_date no longer bypasses the maximum. Invalid settings retain the existing 30/90-day fallbacks. The claimed-window regression fix already on this branch is preserved.

Both database-backed request suites ran locally on an isolated MariaDB instance: 19 and 27 checks passed. The latter now covers a 30-day default with a 7-day maximum, persisted return dates through web and Mobile requests, and rejection of an explicit date beyond that maximum. PHPStan and the coherence/issue regression guards pass. Browser coverage remains subject to CI.

Additional review findings addressed — 2026-10-21

Staff loan and reservation forms keep the uncapped configured staff duration instead of replacing it with the reader default from availability. Mobile requests reject a non-scalar end_date with 422 before creating a request. Staff refusal details now find the first conflict by sweeping commitment boundaries, avoiding per-day allocation for arbitrarily long ranges; the same lookup covers approval, loan edits and admin reservations.

The expanded request-surface suite passes all 36 checks under a 32 MB PHP memory limit, including an actual staff request ending in year 9999, adjacent commitments on different copies, exclusions and zero-copy titles. The request cap, coherence, issue, allocation, approval and API regression suites pass, as do inline JavaScript syntax and PHPStan. Both inline review threads are resolved; the outside-diff range-performance finding is addressed by the same commit.

Caution

The book page calendar shows the new explanations as raw Italian templates with literal %1$d / %2$s / %3$s. This is the main reader-facing part of the PR, so it needs fixing before merge.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed the full PR at 8fba83c: the new LoanWindow helper and its use on the public calendar, the user-area forms, the Mobile API and the admin loan form.

  • LoanWindow helper: works out the longest loan still possible before the first blocked day, writes the message in the current locale, and carries the figures through a 302 as validated query parameters.
  • createReservation refusals: both the pre-lock and post-lock 400s now return error: no_capacity and the cap figures.
  • User-area loan() / reserve() and Mobile API: the not_available redirect now carries max_loan_days / max_end_date / blocked_from. The book page alerts and mapActionError (in envelope meta) turn them into the message.
  • Admin create loan: store() redirects with the figures. The form proposes the shortened deadline and shows a hint under "Data Scadenza".
  • Book page calendar: loanWindowFrom() caps the return picker. The PR also adds a note under the field, an explanation when a blocked day is clicked, and preConfirm checks.
  • Tests: a DB-backed unit test (15 checks) and a Playwright spec.

I checked these and found no problems:

  • php -l passes on every changed PHP file, and scripts/ci-check-locales.py passes.
  • explainFromParams rejects impossible dates through DateHelper::isISODateFormat, so a tampered query cannot make DateTime throw.
  • The client's maximum-duration bound matches the server's diff > max check.
  • The availability state values (free|borrowed|reserved) match the !== 'free' test.

Important

The new commits add the capped-window explanation to approval and loan editing, but both start counting from the wrong day. Staff can be shown a wrong maximum duration, or a "return by" date earlier than the loan's own start. The two earlier threads are also still open: book-detail.php and crea_prestito.php have not changed since 8fba83c, so the untranslated calendar text is still there.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 20d08c8 and 7001eff, the changes since the prior Pullfrog review at 8fba83c.

  • More surfaces explained: approval (LoanApprovalController), loan edit (PrestitiController::update → loans list), admin reservation create and edit, and the patron's "move reservation" now carry or render the LoanWindow explanation.
  • Matching exclusions: CapacityService::unavailableDatesInRange gained excludePrestitoId / excludeReservationId, so the explanation leaves out the row being approved or edited, just as hasFreeCapacity does. I checked every new call site and the arguments match.
  • Optional end_date on loan() / reserve(): the new requestedEndDate() checks it the same way as ReservationsController (ISO date, not before the start, within max_loan_duration_days, falling back to 90).
  • Mobile API 1.8.2: POST /reservations passes end_date on, maps max_duration_exceeded to 422 and documents both in OpenAPI. A new locale key is present in all five locales.
  • Tests: unit checks 16–19 cover the explicit return date, and the coherence audit is re-pinned to loanWindowFrom(.

Important

The new loan durations in getBookAvailabilityData never reach the admin calendars: the HTTP route they fetch drops those keys. Also, all four earlier threads are still open. The book page's window.__ override (L1491) is unchanged, and the new noWindowText also goes through it. In every locale, that message shows the Italian source text with a literal %s.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 82809e4, the changes since the last Pullfrog review at 7001eff.

  • No zero-day window: LoanWindow::cap() returns null when the next day is blocked, so callers keep the generic refusal and don't offer "0 days".
  • Durations in the availability data: getBookAvailabilityData adds loan_duration_days (the default, capped by the maximum) and max_loan_duration_days. The Mobile API catalogue passes on the maximum, and OpenAPI documents it.
  • Calendars handle the blocked next day: the book page, crea_prestito.php and the new crea_prenotazione.php script show a "no loan possible from this start" message. preConfirm on the book page refuses that start before sending.
  • Admin reservation form: it now uses DateHelper::today() and min, fetches the selected title's availability for the chosen borrower, and stops the proposed deadline the day before a conflict.
  • Locales and tests: one new key in all five locales (ci-check-locales.py ✓, php -l clean). tests/loan-window-surfaces.unit.php adds 17 database-backed checks.

ℹ️ The four earlier findings are fixed in 97ef499. One small test-only problem is left (inline).

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 97ef499, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review at 82809e4. 54e44ef was pushed after this run was triggered, so this review does not cover it. The open thread on the availability route whitelist is still open at 97ef499, and that later commit should address it.

  • Book page text is translated: the limit, one-day limit, no-window, blocked-day, max-duration and end-before-start messages are now translated in PHP with json_encode(__()) and filled in with .replace(). No __(template, args) call is left in the popup script.
  • Separate one-day wording: LoanWindow::explain() and all three calendars now use a new 1 giorno key, which is present in all five locales (ci-check-locales.py ✓).
  • Proposed deadline follows the selected book and borrower: autoProposedEnd in crea_prestito.php and crea_prenotazione.php lets a later availability fetch replace a deadline the form proposed, while a date the operator typed is kept. The hint is cleared when a fetch starts, when availability is cleared and on blockedByReservation.
  • Approval counts from the loan's start: LoanApprovalController computes the cap from $dataPrestito and gives no figures when the first blocked day is on or before the start.
  • Loan edit describes the whole loan: PrestitiController::update tags each window with isExtension. Only an extension refusal carries figures, and they are counted from $newPrestito. The loans list keeps the "Modifica non salvata:" prefix before the explanation.
  • Tests: the E2E spec takes today from app.timezone, as DateHelper::today() does. Unit check 3 now expects the whole-loan duration, and the new check 3b covers the sentence. php -l passes on every changed PHP file.

✅ No new issues found. Both remaining findings are fixed, and every Pullfrog thread on this PR is now resolved.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 54e44ef and 16ffcd6, the two commits since the last Pullfrog review at 97ef499.

  • Durations reach the calendars: the localized GET {api_book}/{id}/availability closure in app/Routes/web.php now passes on loan_duration_days and max_loan_duration_days. The payloadDays branches in crea_prestito.php and crea_prenotazione.php now run, and they already ignore a null/non-numeric value through Number.isFinite(...) && >= 1.
  • Route pinned by a test: the new check 13b slices the route source starting at the '/{id:\d+}/availability', function needle. That needle matches only the localized route, not the /api/books/{id:\\d+}/availability one at L2138, so the check covers the closure the forms actually fetch.
  • Sandbox cards carry the run tag: both $mkUser closures now capture $run, so codice_tessera is LW + 8 hex chars + the sequence number and no longer collides on leftover rows. php -l passes on all three changed files.

✅ No new issues found. The last two open findings are fixed, and every Pullfrog thread on this PR is now resolved.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 54e44ef and 16ffcd6, the changes since the last Pullfrog review at 97ef499.

  • Availability route passes the durations: the localized GET {api_book}/{id}/availability closure (app/Routes/web.php:2873-2874) now includes loan_duration_days and max_loan_duration_days. crea_prestito.php and crea_prenotazione.php therefore receive the capped default. If either key is null, parseInt returns NaN, so those forms keep the default rendered by PHP.
  • Route pinned by a test: the new check 13b reads web.php and finds the localized route at L2838. Its search string does not match the /api/books/{id:\\d+}/availability route at L2138, because that line has an escaped backslash in the source. I ran the same strpos / str_contains logic against the file, and both assertions pass.
  • Run tag on test cards: both $mkUser closures now capture $run. The cards are LW + 8 hex characters + the sequence number, which fits codice_tessera varchar(20). php -l passes on all three changed files.

✅ No new issues found. The refactor behaves the same as before, and the #336 source checks match the code again.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 9bb9211, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review at 16ffcd6.

  • Restored the #336 claimed-window literals: PrestitiController::update builds $claimedWindows as 2-tuples again, so both str_contains checks in tests/issues-333-334-336.unit.php:249-250 find them.
  • Derived the extension flag in the loop: the new $isExtension = $claimEnd === $newScadenza && $claimStart > $oldScadenza matches the old tagged tuple in every case. The extension window always ends at $newScadenza and starts at or after $oldScadenza + 1. The earlier-start window can only end at $newScadenza when the whole loan comes before $oldPrestito, and then its start is before $oldScadenza. The per-copy overlap loop still unpacks two elements.

✅ No new issues found. Reader requests on every surface now use the same default capped by the maximum, and the staff paths keep the full duration on purpose.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 030cf87, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review at 9bb9211.

  • Added one source for request durations: SettingsRepository::maxLoanDurationDays() (falls back to 90 below 1) and requestLoanDurationDays() (min(default, max)) replace five inline copies of the parse-and-fallback code in FrontendController, ReservationsController and UserActionsController.
  • Capped reader defaults by the maximum: when end_date is omitted, loan(), reserve() and changeReservationDate now use the capped default, as createReservation already did. A Mobile POST /reservations without end_date therefore no longer creates a loan longer than max_loan_duration_days, and no longer hits a conflict that falls after the maximum.
  • Aligned the Mobile availability default: CatalogController::bookAvailability now reports the capped loan_duration_days from getBookAvailabilityData. That matches the OpenAPI description ("Days POST /reservations adds to the chosen start").
  • Left staff paths unchanged: admin loan create and prefill, renewals, LoanRepository and ReservationsAdminController still call the uncapped loanDurationDays(), as the new docblock says.
  • Re-pinned and extended the tests: the coherence audit now looks for requestLoanDurationDays() and passes locally. New checks 18–23 set the settings to 30/7 and cover web and Mobile availability, loan/reserve, the public calendar, Mobile with and without end_date, and the fallbacks. $cleanup restores both settings and also runs from the exception handler. php -l passes on every changed file.

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Limita l’intervallo prima di calcolare i giorni non disponibili.

noCapacityRedirect() passa data_scadenza direttamente a unavailableDatesInRange().

✅ No new issues found. The first-conflict lookup gives the same figures as before without walking every day, and the staff forms now keep the full configured duration.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 297e5d1, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review at 030cf87.

  • Added a first-conflict sweep: CapacityService::firstUnavailableDateInRange() runs an event sweep over the same clamped HOLDING-loan and reservation intervals, with the same exclusions, so a request ending in 9999-12-31 no longer builds millions of dates. It sums each day's deltas before comparing, so a release and a start on the same day net out, as they do in the per-day count. It also skips release events at or after $end, which avoids a five-digit year.
  • Switched the staff refusal sites to it: noCapacityRedirect, the extension refusal in PrestitiController::update, LoanApprovalController and both ReservationsAdminController refusals now pass array_filter([$first]). LoanWindow::cap() reads only min() of the later conflicts and whether the start day is blocked. At every site, either the range starts at the cap's start, or the min($blocked) > $dataPrestito guard or the extension start ensures the conflict comes after it. The figures therefore don't change. Reader paths still use unavailableDatesInRange, which the maximum duration already bounds.
  • Kept staff defaults uncapped: crea_prestito.php and crea_prenotazione.php no longer replace their default with availability.loan_duration_days, the reader default capped by the maximum. Proposals now match the uncapped loanDurationDays() that store() applies.
  • Rejected a non-scalar end_date on Mobile: requestReservation returns 422 invalid_date before Input::str turns an array or object into an empty string. Before, that empty string silently fell back to the default duration.
  • Extended the tests: checks 22b–22h cover the non-scalar body, the 30-day staff default when readers are capped at 7, huge, excluded and inverted ranges, the 9999 staff refusal, adjacent commitments on different copies, agreement with the per-day result and zero lendable copies. php -l passes on every changed file.

✅ No new issues found. The browser spec now creates its own borrower for the scheduled loan instead of borrowing whichever user it finds, and it removes that borrower afterwards.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed 2872137, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review at 297e5d1. It touches only tests/loan-request-capped-by-scheduled-loan.spec.js.

  • Seeded a dedicated borrower: beforeAll inserts a standard, attivo patron with a run-tagged email and card (LWC + 6 chars, within codice_tessera varchar(20)). The scheduled loan is created for that patron. Before, the spec fell back to the admin on a fresh CI database, and the admin's own commitment never blocks the admin. Every inserted column exists in the utenti schema, and dbQuery uses execFileSync without a shell, so the $ characters in the bcrypt hash reach MySQL unchanged.
  • Cleaned up the borrower: afterAll deletes the patron's loans and then the patron. When the scenario is skipped (no default above 5 days, or no suitable book), the spec never creates the user, so nothing is left behind. node --check passes on the spec.

The French sentence said "retour avant le D", which excludes the day the
server still accepts; "retour au plus tard le D" includes it, as the Italian
"entro il" does. The two database-backed suites now pin the default and
maximum loan durations for the run and restore the installation's values in
their cleanup, so they no longer depend on what the environment configures.
The browser spec snapshots the title's derived columns and restores them,
since an auto-approved request recomputes them.

✅ No new issues found. The new commit only touches the French wording and the test setup, and both changes are correct.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed f34fb71, the only commit since the last Pullfrog review. That review was at 2872137, which is now c8bb135 after the branch was rewritten.

  • Fixed the French return-date wording: both Durata massima del prestito… keys now say retour au plus tard le instead of retour avant le. "Entro il" includes the day itself, and max_end_date is a valid return day, so "avant le" was off by one day. fr_FR.json still parses.
  • Pinned the loan durations in both DB suites: loan-window-cap.unit.php and loan-window-surfaces.unit.php save loan_duration_days and max_loan_duration_days at the top, set them to 30/90, and restore them in $cleanup. Before, the suites depended on whatever the installation had configured. $cleanup runs both at the end and from the exception handler, and a key that didn't exist before is deleted rather than left set. The surfaces suite no longer saves the settings again before checks 18+ set 30/7. That second save would now have captured the pinned 30/90 and restored those values instead of the real ones.
  • Restored the book's derived columns in the browser spec: beforeAll takes a snapshot of libri.copie_disponibili and stato before the request runs, because an auto-approved request recomputes them. afterAll writes them back, keeping NULL as NULL and escaping stato. php -l and node --check pass on the changed files.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

@fabiodalez-dev
fabiodalez-dev merged commit a225b54 into main Oct 21, 2026
3 checks passed
dineshkummarc pushed a commit to dineshkummarc/Pinakes-Library that referenced this pull request Oct 25, 2026
version.json goes to 0.8.7, with a CHANGELOG section and a README highlight for the PHP security notice (fabiodalez-dev#491) and the four merged PRs (fabiodalez-dev#490, fabiodalez-dev#492, fabiodalez-dev#493, fabiodalez-dev#494). The dynamic version badge stays as it is, and 0.8.6 moves into the list of earlier highlights.

Desiderata 1.2.1 and Mobile API 1.8.2 now require 0.8.7: both call CopyRepository::inventoryBase(), which this release adds, so a plugin ZIP installed on an older core would activate and then fail on the first copy it creates.
dineshkummarc pushed a commit to dineshkummarc/Pinakes-Library that referenced this pull request Oct 25, 2026
version.json goes to 0.8.8 with a CHANGELOG section and a README highlight for the commit that reached fabiodalez-dev#490 and fabiodalez-dev#493 after 0.8.7 was cut: the French loan-window sentences say "au plus tard" so they include the return day, and the loan-window suites pin the loan durations they rely on. 0.8.7 moves into the list of earlier highlights. No migration, no plugin change.
