Closures calendar applied to due dates, renewals and pickup deadlines (SLiMS Holiday settings).

What it does

  • App\Support\LibraryCalendar: isOpen, nextOpenDay, previousOpenDay, closedDatesBetween, openDaysBetween, addOpenDays, Italian national holidays preset with Easter and Easter Monday computed in PHP (no calendar extension), ICS import, all dates in app.timezone.
  • Table calendario_chiusure (date range, description, yearly recurrence, sede_id NULL = all branches) and setting loans.closed_weekdays (empty = no closed weekday, so a zero-config install behaves exactly as today).
  • Admin page /admin/calendar (admin only): weekly closed days, closures CRUD, yearly closures, per-branch closures, holiday preset and ICS import (duplicates skipped), monthly preview with branch filter. Linked from the sidebar and from Settings → Loans.
  • One funnel for due dates: CirculationPolicy::dueDateFor($start, $days, ?$db, ?$copiaId) moves a due date that falls on a closed day forward to the next open day (branch closures count when the copy is known). Every server-side due date goes through it: staff desk, patron request, approval, queue promotion, renewals (staff, patron, app, NCIP), bulk extension. Card expiry dates are deliberately not shifted.
  • Pickup deadlines count open days only and are capped at the due date; the nightly pickup/reservation expiry jobs do nothing on a closed day; LoanWindow::renewalCap() reasons on the shifted date.
  • Pickers (admin desk, book page) disable closed days as start dates and move proposed return dates to an open day; the availability API and the mobile API expose closed_dates (additive, documented in the OpenAPI spec).

Choices made: a due date on a closed day moves forward, never back; the request maximum is checked against the shifted maximum, so a return date pushed past a closure is not refused as max_duration_exceeded.

Tests: unit library-calendar 90 checks (ranges, yearly, Easter over 9 years, DST in 4 timezones, branches, ICS), library-calendar-loans 21 against the real DB (14-day loan ending Sunday → Monday, Dec 25 with 24–26 closed → 27, nightly jobs, dueDateFor), migration section 13. E2E closures-calendar-admin 22, closures-calendar-loans 11, closures-calendar-circulation 8 (patron-type durations and renewals over closures); regression: all six circulation-* specs, loan-reservation 21, mobile-api-circulation 22, ncip-server 32, full-test 162 passed / 9 skipped (install phase). PHPStan 0.

Summary by CodeRabbit

Important

The nightly job now gives a pickup deadline that fell on a newly closed day extra time, but the pickup-confirm path ignores that extra time. Staff can't hand over a loan that the sweep has just kept alive.

Reviewed changes

I reviewed the whole PR: the calendar service, every due-date and pickup funnel, the admin page, the pickers and the API payloads.

  • LibraryCalendar service: handles weekly closed days, yearly closures, branch closures and ICS import, all as pure date logic in UTC. php tests/library-calendar.unit.php passes locally (90 checks), and scripts/ci-check-locales.py is clean.
  • Due-date funnel: CirculationPolicy::dueDateFor() now takes $db and $copiaId. Every server-side due date (staff, patron, queue promotion, renewals, bulk, NCIP) is passed through it. Typed dates go through it with $days = 0.
  • Pickup deadlines and nightly jobs: deadlines count open days only, both expiry sweeps skip closed days, and expired pickups get a read-side reprieve.
  • Admin /admin/calendar: covers weekly days, closures CRUD, the holiday preset and ICS import. It is guarded by mayConfigure() and every POST carries CSRF. It adds the calendario_chiusure table to the schema and to migrate_0.9.0.sql.
  • closed_dates payload: added to the web availability route and the mobile API (including the OpenAPI spec). The pickers in book-detail.php and crea_prestito.php disable closed start days.

✅ No new issues found. Both concerns from the last review are fixed, and the fixes hold up.

Reviewed changes

This run covers the commits since 889eddb: the fix commit bd788805 and the changelog update that goes with it.

  • Pickup deadlines are now moved when they are stored: every calendar write in LibraryCalendarController (closure add, edit and delete, weekly days, holiday preset, ICS import) goes through calendarChanged(). That calls LibraryCalendar::extendPickupDeadlines(), which moves each pending da_ritirare deadline that now falls on a closed day to the next open day of the copy's branch. confirmPickup, the reader's cancellation, the sweep and the expired badges all read that one stored value. The UPDATE only matches the old deadline, so running it twice changes nothing. It also leaves alone any deadline whose next open day has already passed.
  • Removed the read-side reprieve from checkExpiredPickups(): the sweep now relies on the stored deadline.
  • Made the renewal cap branch-aware: LoanWindow::renewalCap() and renewalRedirectParams() take a $sedeId, and PrestitiController::renew, bulkExtend and NCIP extendLoan pass LibraryCalendar::branchOfCopy(). The step back now uses the same closures as the forward move. $copyId / $copiaId are defined before every new call site.
  • Added tests: the unit checks cover the branch-closure cap, the move of the stored deadline, idempotency and the no-closure case. The new E2E Admin 6 closes yesterday's deadline from the calendar page and then confirms the pickup.

ℹ️ No critical issues. Two small gaps around the new branch-aware and closed-start-day handling are noted inline.

Reviewed changes

This run covers the four commits since 18b718e. They work through the CodeRabbit round.

  • Applied branch closures once the copy is known: the staff desk store() moves the due date to the next open day of the selected copy's branch, then checks capacity again for the longer window. Pickup deadlines now count the open days of that branch in store(), update(), approveLoan(), activateScheduledLoans() and the approval email.
  • Moved a closed start day on the server: createReservation, reserve() and changeReservationDate() move a closed start day to the next open day. The JSON response now returns the stored start_date and end_date, and book-detail.php uses them in its confirmation text.
  • Stopped queue expiry on closed days: ReservationManager::cancelExpiredReservations() returns 0 when the library is closed, the same rule the other nightly sweeps follow.
  • Accepted Windows-1252 ICS files: a non-UTF-8 upload is converted before parsing. The calendar view now escapes with a plain local htmlspecialchars helper.
  • Aligned the request picker with the server: a chosen return day is moved to an open day before the maximum check, and the conflict search now reaches the shifted maximum end.
  • Added tests: E2E Admin 7 (branch closure on the due date and the pickup), Request 5 (crafted request with a closed start day) and ICS 6 (Windows-1252 file), plus a unit check for the queue expiry.

ℹ️ No critical issues. Both threads from the last review are fixed. One edge case in the new approval shift is noted inline.

Reviewed changes

This run covers f288fe6, pushed after the review of 306f01d.

  • Moved the due date on approval to an open day of the copy's branch: once approveLoan() has locked the copy, it runs dueDateFor(..., copy). It keeps the moved date only when CapacityService::hasFreeCapacity() allows the longer window, and then writes data_scadenza together with the copy and the pickup deadline. The pickup cap now uses the moved due date.
  • Made the reserve banner show the stored start day: the reserve() success redirect now passes $start as reserve_date rather than $desired.
  • Narrowed the CHANGELOG: the branch-closure sentence now covers only the staff desk and approval.
  • Added E2E Admin 8: it approves a pending request onto a copy whose branch is closed on the due date and checks that the stored due date is the next day.

ℹ️ No critical issues. The approval thread from the last review is fixed. One small side effect on the mobile API is noted inline.

Reviewed changes

The branch was rebased onto a newer base, and 4b6df8c is the same commit as the previously reviewed f288fe6 (git range-diff shows =). So this run covers only e53df21.

  • Checked the selected copy on the extra days at approval: before approveLoan() keeps a due date moved for a branch closure, it now runs the overlap recheck's own predicate over [due + 1, branchDue]. If the copy is busy there, the requested date stays. This resolves the earlier thread. The new E2E Admin 9 covers the case.
  • Unfolded ICS lines before the encoding check: a UTF-8 character split by a fold is no longer read as Windows-1252. parseIcs() unfolds again, which now changes nothing. The new E2E ICS 7 covers this.
  • Started a loan request made on a closed day on the next open day: UserActionsController::loan() now starts at nextOpenDay(today).
  • Returned the stored window from createReservation: the JSON reply re-reads data_prestito/data_scadenza after auto-approval.
  • Counted pickup days on the book page the way the emails do: the page now uses min(pickupExpiryDays, span), matching NotificationService::effectivePickupDays().
  • Made the unit test cleanup more robust: library-calendar-loans deletes the fixture's prenotazioni before the book.

I ran php -l on the changed controllers, and php tests/library-calendar.unit.php passes 90 checks.

…, 0.9.0 migration

LibraryCalendar answers whether the library is open on a day (weekly closed
days from loans.closed_weekdays plus closure intervals, yearly or not, for all
branches or one), shifts a date to the next open day, counts open days, builds
the Italian holiday preset with Easter computed in PHP and reads ICS files.
dueDate() and pickupDeadline() are the two funnels the loan code will call.
Weekly closed days, closure intervals (add, edit, delete, yearly, per branch),
Italian national holidays preset, ICS import and a monthly preview. Linked
from the sidebar and from Settings > Loans; every action is reserved to
administrators like the settings pages. Strings in the five locales.
…ly jobs

Every computed or submitted due date goes through LibraryCalendar::dueDate()
(admin create/edit, user requests, reservations, queue promotion, bulk extend,
renew, NCIP checkout/request/renew); pickup deadlines through
LibraryCalendar::pickupDeadline(), which counts open days. Renewal caps step
back to the last open day before a conflict. checkExpiredPickups() and
checkExpiredReservations() expire nothing on a closed day. The availability
payload gains closed_dates (web and Mobile API, additive) and both request
calendars refuse a closed day as the start.
Integration checks for the one due-date funnel: per-type durations, typed
dates (zero days), branch closures through the copy, and plain arithmetic
without a connection or without closures. The loan-coherence audit follows
the book page's loanWindowFrom() closed-day argument.
…due date

The scheduled-loan note computed the pickup deadline in the browser
with the library-wide closures of the loaded horizon only, so a closure
of the assigned copy's branch, or one running past the horizon, gave an
earlier date than activation applies. The request response now returns
pickup_deadline and pickup_days, computed from the stored window with
the copy's branch closures, and the note uses them, keeping the local
rule as the fallback.

The automatic approval also hands back the due date it wrote
(approveLoan's JSON now includes data_scadenza and copia_id), so when
the stored window cannot be read back the answer no longer reports the
requested date that approval moved over a branch closure.
{{giorni_ritiro}} counted open days library-wide while the deadline it
describes uses the closures of the copy's branch, so a branch-only
closure inside the window was counted as a day to collect the book.
effectivePickupDays() now takes the copy and applies the same branch as
pickupDeadline(); every caller passes the loan's copia_id (the pickup
reminder query now selects it).
…led run

beforeAll clears loans.closed_weekdays and only afterAll put it back, so
a run interrupted in between read '' as the original the next time and
lost the real value. The original is now kept in a file in the system
temp directory, keyed by database name: a later run restores from it
first, and afterAll removes it once the setting is back.
- closures-calendar-loans: the expected "next open day" is computed
from every library-wide closure and the weekly closed days stored in
the database, so a closure already present next to a test date no
  longer fails the assertion.
- The reader's request duration is min(loan, max) in its own variable;
  a max_loan_duration_days below loan_duration_days is a valid setup and
no longer stops the suite, while staff loans keep loan_duration_days.
- The admin_notifications cleanup removes only loan notifications
(loan types, or a general one linking to the loans page): related_id
also holds message, user, reservation and review ids.
- mobile-api-circulation: the closed-today case closes tomorrow too, so
the first open day is never just today + 1.
…s prefix

autoApproveLoanRequest() gained a by-reference argument that hands back the due date the approval wrote; the structural check still asserts the call passes knownEnabled = true without pinning the argument list.

Reviewed changes

Nine PR commits since 99fa4d9, plus two merges from feat/circulation-policy whose only overlap with this PR is the locale files (ci-check-locales.py is clean).

  • Whole-year guard counts weekly closed days: yearCoverageError() now uses loans.closed_weekdays and checks 28 consecutive years. It also runs from saveWeekdays and importPreset, which roll back on refusal, and the new message is in all five locales.
  • ICS yearly rules tightened: BYMONTH/BYMONTHDAY must match DTSTART, and the rule is judged at END:VEVENT so it works whatever the property order. Any EXDATE (TZID honoured) turns the event into a single occurrence, and an excluded DTSTART drops the event.
  • Failed closures read throws: loadClosures() raises RuntimeException instead of returning an empty calendar. A missing table, as before the migration, still means no closures, and forDb() caches nothing on failure.
  • Request calendar crosses any closure: toOpenDayIso() is now bounded by the closed-set size, and a node-run unit check crosses a 434-day closure in both directions.
  • Request answer carries the server's pickup window: approveLoan returns the data_scadenza it wrote (after the branch shift). createReservation answers with pickup_deadline/pickup_days computed with the assigned copy's branch, and book-detail.php uses those values when they are present.
  • Branch-aware pickup emails: every effectivePickupDays() call passes copia_id, and every source query selects p.* or the column explicitly.
  • E2E/unit robustness: the original closed weekdays are kept in a file so a killed run can restore them. nextOpenInDb() accounts for closures already in the database, requestDays = min(loan, max), admin_notifications cleanup is scoped by type, and the coherence audit matches by prefix.

Verified locally: tests/library-calendar.unit.php passes (161 checks), php -l is clean on every changed PHP file, the locale JSON is valid and both specs pass node --check. The DB-backed suites were not run.

Replies to the follow-up findings listed in the body of the latest CodeRabbit review on this PR:

  • app/Support/NotificationService.php 80-81, pickup days counted with the copy's branch: Fixed in e258da4. effectivePickupDays() takes the copy id and counts open days with that copy's branch, like pickupDeadline(); every caller passes copia_id, and the reminder query now selects it.
  • app/Controllers/ReservationsController.php 593-605, fallback after a failed re-read: Fixed in 5f3c546. approveLoan()'s JSON now includes the data_scadenza and copia_id it wrote. autoApproveLoanRequest() hands that back, so if the stored window can't be re-read the response still reports the due date the approval wrote.
  • tests/mobile-api-circulation.spec.js 390-407, closure tomorrow in the closed-day test: Fixed in d38374a. The closed-today case in mobile-api-circulation.spec.js also closes tomorrow and asserts the result is at least two days out.

Follow-up Comments

Minor follow-up Evita di ricostruire la copertura annuale a ogni evento importato.

278-283: Minor · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

…hole-year discards get their own count

update() checked that the closure exists before taking the calendar lock: a
closure another operator deleted in between made the UPDATE touch no row and
still report "Chiusura aggiornata". The check now runs again inside the
locked write and rolls back with "Chiusura non trovata".

The ICS import counted the yearly events refused by the whole-year guard
together with the ones over the span limit, and the summary blamed them all
on the span. They now have their own counter and sentence.

The ICS help text said every RRULE FREQ=YEARLY repeats every year; only a
plain yearly rule does, any other recurrence imports its first occurrence.
…ed reads are thrown

parseIcs() compared EXDATE with DTSTART by date only, so an EXDATE at
another time the same day dropped the DTSTART occurrence, which RFC 5545
keeps. icsDateTime() now also returns the local date and time as one key
(the date alone for a DATE) and the exclusion uses it.

The icsDateTime() pattern was not anchored: DTSTART:20261224garbage was read
as 2026-12-24 and imported as a one-day closure. Trailing text now makes the
value invalid.

A failed loans.closed_weekdays read returned no weekly closure and a failed
copy branch lookup returned no branch, so a due date could be stored on a
closed weekday or a closed branch day. Both now throw a RuntimeException
like the closures read, before forDb() caches anything.
…ored row cannot be read

When reading the stored window back failed, createReservation() answered
pickup_deadline/pickup_days null and the page computed them with the
library-wide closures only, so the success message could show a date the
approval and the pickup email did not use. The fallback now estimates them
with the copy the approval assigned (its JSON body carries copia_id), in its
own try so a failure never turns the committed request into an error. It is
documented as an estimate counted from the requested start, not the stored
deadline.

The D2 assertions expected pickup_days to equal pickup_expiry_days, which
fails with a correct answer when the setting is longer than the 14-day loan:
the expected deadline and days are now counted day by day, capped at the due
date.
…bility day

loanWindowFrom() moves the longest return date over closed days, which can
carry it past the 180 loaded days of availability. A day without occupancy
data reads as free, so a booked day there was proposed and the server then
refused the request. The maximum now stops at the last loaded day, or the
open day before it, and the proposed date never passes that maximum.
…cleanup touches only holiday rows

clearClosures() removes only this run's rows, so a library-wide closure
already in the table on today+30 or in the next three days failed the
zero-config assertions with a correct calculation. Those dates, and the
Sunday/Monday pair of the dueDateFor block, are now picked where no
pre-existing closure closes the library.

The preset cleanup deleted every row with an id above the watermark that
was not tagged, so a closure someone stored meanwhile was deleted for good
and counted as a preset row. It now counts and deletes only library-wide
rows named after the holidays the preset writes.
…, scope notification cleanup

closures-calendar-admin: every calendar save moves pending pickup deadlines
that land on a closed day, and the teardown only restored the setting. The
pending pickups are now snapshotted (and stashed with the weekdays, for an
interrupted run) and the ones this run moved forward are put back. Weekly 3
and Weekly 5 also expect the days a library-wide closure already in the
table closes, instead of assuming the weekly rule alone decides September.

closures-calendar-loans: Admin 5 asserted fixed dates; it now follows any
closure already stored, with nextOpenInDb() for the due date and an
open-day count for the pickup deadline.

closures-calendar-circulation: the notification cleanup filtered only by
related_id, which also holds message, user, reservation and review ids; it
now keeps to the loan notification types like the loans suite.
importIcs() ran yearCoverageError() after every yearly event, and each call
re-read every yearly row, rebuilt the calendar and re-scanned 28 years from
Jan 1: 360 consecutive one-day yearly events took about 50 seconds, all
under the calendar lock other writers give up on after 10.

The import now passes a state through the calls: the yearly rows are read
once, and each event looks again only at the years whose first open day it
closes, from that day on (closures only grow during an import). A refused
event leaves the state untouched, so the single offending event is still
the one discarded. The same 360 events now take about a second.

Reviewed changes

This run covers the seven commits since the last Pullfrog review at 90de006. They follow up on the CodeRabbit review of that commit. The base merge ac36cca overlaps this PR only in the locale files, which are clean.

  • Rechecked the closure under the lock in update(): closureExists() now runs inside commitChange, so an update racing a delete reports "not found" instead of "updated". A new two-connection GET_LOCK test covers this.
  • Carried the whole-year guard's state through an ICS import: yearCoverageError(..., &$state) reads the yearly rows once. It remembers each branch and year's first open day and rescans only from a day the new row closes. A failed check leaves the state untouched, and the logic holds because closures only grow during an import.
  • Reported whole-year ICS discards separately: they now have their own count and message, translated into all 5 locales, apart from the span-limit discards.
  • Tightened ICS date parsing: the icsDateTime regex is anchored, so trailing junk is refused. EXDATE now matches DTSTART on local date and time, as RFC 5545 requires.
  • Made calendar reads fail loudly: loadClosedWeekdays() and branchOfCopy() now throw RuntimeException instead of answering "no weekly closure" or "no branch". This matches how loadClosures() already behaves.
  • Kept the copy's branch in the pickup estimate: when the stored-window read fails, ReservationsController::fallbackPickup() uses the approval's copia_id. It has its own try/catch, so the request still succeeds.
  • Capped the book-page return date at the loaded availability: loanWindowFrom no longer offers a day with no occupancy data.
  • Spelled out the plain-yearly ICS rule in the calendar page's help text.
  • Made the tests robust to existing closures: unit and E2E expectations now account for closures already in the table. The admin spec restores the pickup deadlines it moved, and the circulation spec deletes only loan notifications.

Checks run: php -l is clean on the changed PHP files. php tests/library-calendar.unit.php passes 164 checks, including the new loanWindowFrom node check. ci-check-locales.py is clean, the locale JSON is valid, and the three closures specs pass node --check. The DB-backed tests were not run here.

Replies to the nitpick and outside-diff findings in the body of the latest CodeRabbit review on this PR:

  • Avoid rebuilding the yearly coverage for every imported event — Fixed in 0470b7d. The ICS import now passes a state through yearCoverageError(). The yearly rows are read once per import, and each later event re-checks only the years whose first open day it closes, starting from that day (closures only grow during an import). A refused event leaves the state unchanged, so it is still the single offending event that gets discarded. I measured 360 consecutive one-day yearly events at about 50 s before the change, past the 10 s other writers wait for the lock, and about 1 s after. The unit test checks this without timing: a 365-event import reads the yearly rows once instead of 365 times and still discards only Dec 31. A second case covers a branch whose last open day is closed by a later event of the same import.
  • Limit the admin notification cleanup to loan notifications — Fixed in ea9590f. The afterAll DELETE in tests/closures-calendar-circulation.spec.js now uses the same type filter as closures-calendar-loans.spec.js (new_loan_request / overdue_loan, or general with a /admin/loans link), on top of the loan-id condition.

0162a39 stopped the longest return date at the last loaded availability day, but the book page loads 180 days and lets a reader start on almost any of them: a start four months ahead could no longer have its return date in the following month. The public availability route now loads occupancy data past the 180 start days by the longest loan plus the closed-day margin (the same horizon the closed days already use), and returns start_until, the last day a request may start on, which the start picker uses as its maximum. The clamp from 0162a39 stays as a safety net.

Reviewed changes

This run covers one PR commit since the last Pullfrog review at ac36cca. The merge at 220118b from feat/circulation-policy changed no file in this PR's diff.

  • Availability covers a late start's loan window: getBookAvailabilityData() gains a $coverLoanWindow flag. When it is set, days extend to the closed-day horizon (start window + longest loan + 31), so a booked day after the last start day no longer shows as free. The method always returns start_until, the last day a request may start.
  • Public availability route opts in: the api_book/{id}/availability route passes true and exposes start_until. The mobile, staff and availability-calendar callers keep the old 180-day payload.
  • Book page start picker caps at start_until: maxDate now comes from start_until, falling back to the last loaded day. The return picker's lastLoaded clamp therefore no longer cuts short a loan that starts near the end of the window.
  • Tests: loan-window-cap.unit.php adds 4b, which compares the plain and covered payloads, and 21, a source check that the route and the view are wired together.

This change shipped in 0.9.0-rc.1: the whole stack landed in main through the release PR #514 (https://github.com/fabiodalez-dev/Pinakes/releases/tag/v0.9.0-rc.1). I'm closing this one because its base branch was part of the stack, so GitHub cannot mark it as merged on its own.
