Stop the loan request before a scheduled loan and say how long it can be - #53
Conversation
The loan-request sheet proposed the chosen start plus the library's loan_duration_days whatever the calendar showed. When a scheduled loan or a reservation on every copy began inside that window the server refused the whole request with a bare "not available", although a shorter loan was possible, and the reader was never told how long. LoanWindow.kt reads the availability calendar the sheet already holds: the first fully-booked day inside the duration bounds the loan, the return date becomes the day before it, and the sheet explains it under the calendar: maximum loan length, return date, and the day from which the book is already booked. The request then carries that date as end_date of POST /reservations (Mobile API 1.8.2), so the server accepts the shortened loan the way the website calendar does. Tapping a red day, which cannot be picked, now says why. A not_available refusal from the server carries its own explanation and meta figures (max_end_date, max_duration_days, first_conflict_date); the message is what the reader sees and the figures are modelled for later use. Strings in it, en, de, fr. LoanWindowTest covers the capped, uncapped, conflict-beyond-duration, next-day-blocked, partial-day, unavailable- dates and unknown-duration cases; the sheet tests take the two-argument confirm callback. The API contract documents end_date.

ℹ️ No critical issues — two rough edges in the cap computation and its copy.
Reviewed changes
Initial review of the loan-window cap: the sheet now stops the requested return the day before the first fully-booked day and explains why.
loanWindowFrom— new pure helper that scans start+1..start+duration for afull/unavailable_datesday and caps the return date before it.- Loan-request sheet — hint line uses the capped return; a new
loan-limitnote explains the cap and taps on red days; confirm sendsend_dateonly when capped. LoanCalendar— optionalonBlockedTapmakesDayKind.Fullcells tappable only when supplied, so existingassertHasNoClickActiontests still hold.- Request path —
end_datethreaded throughBookDetailViewModel.reserve→LibraryRepository.reserve→ReservationRequest; the server'snot_available409 code differs fromErrorCodes.CONFLICT, so its message still reaches the existingserverMessage()branch. Meta— modelsmax_end_date,max_duration_days,first_conflict_datefor later use.- i18n / contract — two new keys in all four locales;
end_datedocumented in_contract/openapi.json.

…et and the envelope
A commitment on the very next day leaves no loan of at least one day:
LoanWindow.possible is false, the sheet says so ("no loan is possible
from this start date: the book is already booked from D") and disables
the request instead of proposing a same-day return. The availability
payload's max_loan_duration_days (Mobile API 1.8.2) is modelled.
LoanRequestWindowTest renders the sheet: a scheduled loan inside the
duration shortens the return date and the note says so; confirming sends
the shortened date as end_date; with no conflict nothing is explained
and no end_date is sent; tapping a fully-booked day explains why it
cannot be picked and leaves the pick unchanged; a commitment on the next
day disables the request. ReservationRefusalEnvelopeTest pins what the
server says to the app: the not_available sentence and meta figures, a
refusal without figures, the max_duration_exceeded code, end_date sent
only when shortened, both durations in the availability payload.

Reviewed changes
Reviewed what changed since the review of bd620c6: the sheet now refuses a start that leaves no room for a loan, and new tests cover the sheet and the refusal envelope.
LoanWindow.possible— addedmaxDays >= 1. When the day right after the start is fully booked, the sheet showsbook_loan_no_windowin place of the "0 days" limit note and disablesloan-confirm.AvailabilityCalendar.maxLoanDurationDays— modelsmax_loan_duration_daysfrom the payload. Main code doesn't read it yet.- i18n — added
book_loan_no_windowto all four locales. - Tests — added
LoanRequestWindowTest(Robolectric, renders the sheet: capped hint and note,end_dateon confirm, uncapped path, red-day tap, disabled request) andReservationRefusalEnvelopeTest(parseErrorBodymeta figures,end_dateserialisation, both durations). ExtendedLoanWindowTestwithpossible.
ℹ️ Earlier findings still open
- The "0 days" half of the plural thread is fixed by
book_loan_no_window. A one-day cap still reads "1 days", so that thread stays open. loanWindowFromstill doesn't treatstate == "free"withavailable == 0as blocked. The newpossiblegate inherits the same gap: if that day is the one right after the start, the request stays enabled.

…r note CalendarModel painted a day labelled free with no free copy red and unpickable, but loanWindowFrom only looked at unavailable_dates and the full state, so such a day inside the duration did not cap the request and the server refused it. AvailabilityCalendar.isFullyBooked() is now the one predicate both use, with a test for the stale label. A cap one day out read "1 days": book_loan_limit_note_one is the singular variant (the string generator has no plurals). The zero-day case already reads as "no loan is possible from this start date".

✅ No new issues found. Both earlier findings are fixed, and their threads are resolved.
Reviewed changes
Reviewed what changed since the review of 56a5693: one predicate now decides which days are fully booked, and a one-day cap gets its own singular note.
AvailabilityCalendar.isFullyBooked— added a predicate for "fully booked": the day is inunavailable_dates, has statefull, or has statefreewith no free copy.CalendarModel.kind()andloanWindowFrom()both call it, so every day the calendar shows red also caps the loan. The calendar's own output doesn't change.book_loan_limit_note_one— added a singular note for a one-day cap in all four locales. The sheet picks it whenmaxDays == 1.LoanWindowTest— added a case for a stalefreelabel withavailable = 0. Such a day now caps the return date.

✅ No new issues found. The configured maximum bounds the request the same way the server checks it.
Reviewed changes
Reviewed what changed since the review of 36f79b9: the loan-request window now also respects the library's maximum loan duration.
loanWindowFrom— now scans and defaults to the smaller ofloan_duration_daysandmax_loan_duration_days. A missing or non-positive maximum leaves the old behavior. Bookings inside that bound still shorten the loan. The server change in fabiodalez-dev/Pinakes#490 countsstart → endasdiff()->daysand refuses only when it is> max, so a return on start + max is accepted.LoanWindow.requiresEndDate— added a flag for an end before start +loan_duration_days. That covers a booking cap and a settings cap, and confirm now sendsend_datewhenever the flag is set.cappedstill means only "a booking shortened it", so a settings limit shortens the dates without showing theloan-limitnote.- Tests — added three
LoanWindowTestcases (maximum before a later booking, booking inside the maximum, default already within the maximum). Added aLoanRequestWindowTestcase that checks the shown range, that no note appears, and theend_datesent.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Correggere "retour avant le": la data indicata è l'ultimo giorno di prestito.
%2$s (e %1$s in book_loan_limit_note_one) è w.endDate.

Problem
The loan-request sheet proposed the chosen start plus the library's
loan_duration_dayswhatever the calendar showed. When a scheduled loan or a reservation on every copy began inside that window, the server refused the whole request with a bare "not available", although a shorter loan was possible, and the reader was never told how long it could be.Change
ui/screens/detail/LoanWindow.kt—loanWindowFrom(start, calendar, loanDurationDays)reads the availability calendar the sheet already holds. The first fully-booked day (state == "full"or inunavailable_dates) inside the duration bounds the loan: the return date becomes the day before it,cappedsays the default was shortened, possibleis false when the very next day is blocked (no loan of at least one day). Same rule as the website calendar and the server'sLoanWindow.Loan-request sheet (
BookDetailScreen.kt)loan-limittest tag). When no loan is possible from that start: "Da questa data di inizio non è possibile alcun prestito: dal D il libro è già prenotato. Scegli un'altra data." and the request button is disabled.LoanCalendargains an optionalonBlockedTap.end_dateonly when capped; otherwise the server keeps adding its default, exactly as before.Request path —

testDebugUnitTest, lintDebugandassembleDebugcould not be run locally; the Kotlin was reviewed by hand against the surrounding code. CI runs all three.Server compatibility
Older servers ignore
end_dateand omit the meta figures andmax_loan_duration_days; the sheet still computes and shows the cap from the calendar (it needsloan_duration_days, Mobile API 1.8.1+). Without that field the sheet behaves exactly as before.Review fixes and local validation — 2026-10-21
The request window also honors
max_loan_duration_days. If that maximum shortens an uncapped server default, the app displays and sends the boundedend_datewithout attributing the limit to a booking. Earlier commitments can still shorten it further. Servers that omit the maximum retain the previous behavior.Added three arithmetic regressions and a rendered-sheet regression that verifies both the displayed and submitted date. Local validation passed: 444 debug unit tests, 444 release unit tests, no failures or skips;
lintDebughas 0 errors (120 existing warnings);assembleDebugandassembleRelease, including R8/resource shrinking, succeed. Remote CI is running on the updated commit.Summary by CodeRabbit
