Summary

Implements Phase 7.3: Database Connection & Schema Explorer UI for DERA (Database Engineering & Reverse Analysis). This milestone delivers a comprehensive database connection management experience, real-time diagnostic probing, and a full-featured interactive Schema Explorer split-pane studio. Users can configure authorized database connections across supported database engines (PostgreSQL, Supabase PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and path-contained SQLite), test connectivity diagnostics safely through the backend, browse hierarchical database and namespace trees, and inspect detailed table structures including columns, primary keys, foreign keys with referential actions, unique constraints, check constraints, indexes, metadata completeness indicators, and extraction provenance.

Strictly adheres to DERA's Zero-AI determinism standard: zero AI/LLM models, zero client-side credential persistence, zero direct browser-to-database connections, zero source database mutations, and zero simulated metadata results.

Change Type

  • New feature (non-breaking change which adds functionality)
  • Bug fix (non-breaking change which fixes an issue)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that would cause existing functionality to not work as expected)
  • Documentation update

Related Issues

Resolves Phase 7.3 Master Engineering Implementation Directive: Database Connection & Schema Explorer UI.

Implementation Details

  1. Connection Management Interface (/connections):
    • Workspace-scoped connection directory with engine badge indicators, host sanitization, and health status indicators.
    • Live actions for ephemeral connectivity probes, connection detail inspection, editing, and deletion with confirmation dialogs.
  2. Connection Creation & Engine Selector (/connections/new):
    • Engine selector cards for PostgreSQL, Supabase, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQLite.
    • Dynamic engine-specific forms with port defaults and parameter validation.
    • SQLite path containment validation strictly restricting database paths to :memory:\ or \workspace/\ / \demo/.
    • Ephemeral pre-save diagnostic connection testing via \POST /api/v1/connections/test.
  3. Connection Detail & Diagnostics (/connections/[connectionId]):
    • Detailed connection properties, safe host/port coordinates, masked credentials, and live diagnostic re-testing.
    • In-place connection property editing and destructive deletion with modal confirmations.
  4. Schema Explorer Studio (/schemas/[schemaId]):
    • Professional split-pane ergonomics featuring a collapsible hierarchical navigation tree (Left Pane) and contextual detail studio (Main Pane).
    • Dual-mode inspection: Schema Overview (aggregate counts) and Table Inspector (structured technical tabs).
    • Technical Column Table: Ordinal sequence preservation, native and canonical types, nullability, defaults, and identity/generated flags.
    • Constraint Inspector: Primary keys, composite foreign keys with referential actions (\ON UPDATE, \ON DELETE), unique constraints, and inert, XSS-escaped check constraints.
    • Index Inspector: Uniqueness, index access methods (\BTREE, \GIN, etc.), column ordering, and filter expressions.
    • Metadata Completeness & Provenance: Honest status indicators (\complete, \partial,
      estricted) and lineage telemetry.
    • Real-time search and namespace filtering.
  5. Typed API Client Integration:
    • Integrated with existing CSRF headers, session cookies, and \X-Workspace-Id\ RBAC context.
  6. Documentation & Acceptance:
    • 17 detailed documentation files in \docs/frontend/\ and baseline/acceptance audit records in \docs/audit/.

Testing

  • Relevant tests passed
  • Unit tests verified: Typed API client methods for connectors and reverse engineering
  • Component tests verified: Connection forms, engine selection, tabs primitive, table inspection, and XSS escaping
  • Monorepo TypeScript typechecking verified (0 errors)
  • Next.js production build verified (16 static and dynamic routes compiled successfully)
  • Python backend linting and format verification verified (Ruff 0 issues)
  • Markdown documentation linting verified (0 issues across 382 files)

Security Impact

  • Zero Client-Side Credential Persistence: Database passwords are held in ephemeral React state during form submission and cleared immediately upon completion. Passwords are never stored in localStorage, sessionStorage, cookies, or logs.
  • No Direct Database Connections: Browsers communicate exclusively with the authorized DERA backend API over HTTPS. All network requests use session cookies and CSRF tokens.
  • SQLite Path Containment: Strictly validates and rejects arbitrary server filesystem paths, preventing unauthorized local file access.
  • XSS & Injection Protection: Database names, column identifiers, and check constraint expressions are strictly rendered as inert text and escaped.

Documentation Impact

  • Created \docs/audit/PHASE_7_3_EXPLORER_BASELINE.md\
  • Created \docs/audit/PHASE_7_3_EXPLORER_ACCEPTANCE.md\
  • Created 17 frontend specification documents in \docs/frontend/\

Breaking Changes

  • No breaking changes introduced. Existing APIs and routes remain backward compatible.

Review comments at @apps/api/src/dera_api/api/v1/endpoints/connections.py:
- Around line 296-310: Update resolve_authorized_workspace_id to read
request.path_params.get("workspace_id"); when present, require it to match the
header or query workspace value, use the path value on a match, and return a 400
error on conflict. Keep the shared dependency compatible with routes that lack
this path parameter; do not use Path(...).
- Around line 458-478: Update inspect_connection_schema to create the connector
from the stored connection configuration and run real introspection, then build
and register the schema from the introspection result using the server identity
for source_version. Remove the hardcoded metadata and placeholder namespace; if
introspection is not wired, return 501 Not Implemented without registering a
schema or updating last_inspected_at.
- Around line 248-251: Replace the SQLite database startswith check using
payload.engine and payload.database with a shared path-validation helper that
resolves against the configured fixed roots and rejects escapes, symlinks,
absolute paths, and either path separator. Reuse it for raw tests, creates, and
updates; on updates, validate the effective database value whenever the stored
engine is SQLite, preserving the workspace invariant when the field is omitted.
Keep /inspect behavior unchanged because it uses entity.database only as schema
metadata.
- Around line 241-243: Add the workspace authorization dependency to
test_raw_connection, matching the other connection routes, so POST
/connections/test requires an authorized workspace before processing the
payload.

Review comments at
@apps/api/src/dera_api/api/v1/endpoints/reverse_engineering/deps.py:
- Around line 83-86: Make resolve_authorized_workspace_id permission-aware by
extracting its checks into a require_workspace_permission dependency factory
that passes the requested permission to has_permission. Update each route to
require the matching permission: CONNECTION_READ for list/get,
CONNECTION_CREATE, CONNECTION_UPDATE, or CONNECTION_DELETE for corresponding
mutations, CONNECTION_UPDATE for test/inspect, and SNAPSHOT_CREATE or
EXPORT_CREATE for snapshot/export mutations.

Review comments at
@apps/api/src/dera_api/api/v1/endpoints/reverse_engineering/exports.py:
- Line 19: Remove the nonexistent DEFAULT_EXPORT_LIMITS import and update the
validate_export_options call to avoid passing the limits object as the schema
argument; rely on ExportService.generate_export for limits validation.
- Around line 111-125: Add handlers for ExportValidationError and
UnsupportedExportFormatError before the generic ExportError handler in the
create_export exception flow, mapping them to HTTP 400 and HTTP 422 respectively
while preserving the existing handlers.
- Around line 188-227: Update download_export_artifact to use the ExportArtifact
fields checksum_sha256, content_bytes, and mime_type for the ETag, response
content, and media type, respectively; leave the other headers and response
behavior unchanged.

Review comments at
@apps/api/src/dera_api/api/v1/endpoints/reverse_engineering/service.py:
- Around line 122-129: Update the create_snapshot call to
SchemaSnapshotBuilder.from_analysis: remove the unsupported requester_id
argument and convert the tag list to the dict[str, str] shape expected by the
builder, preserving each tag as a key.

Review comments at @apps/web/src/app/(app)/schemas/[schemaId]/page.tsx:
- Around line 113-140: Update loadTableDetail to clear selectedTableDetail when
a request starts and ignore stale request results, errors, and cleanup when a
newer table selection has been made. Track the latest request using a ref so
only the currently selected table can update the detail, error, and loading
state.
- Line 78: Update loadSchemaData so its early return for a missing workspace or
schemaId also clears loadingSchema; this lets the existing ErrorState render
when no workspace is selected.

Review comments at @apps/web/src/lib/api-client.ts:
- Around line 399-404: Update testRawConnection to send the active workspace in
X-Workspace-Id, and require authenticated workspace context in the raw
connection test route. Before connecting, resolve hostnames and apply strict
destination validation to every returned address, including MySQL and MariaDB
targets.

Review comments at @docs/frontend/CONNECTION_FORMS.md:
- Around line 49-56: Update the SQLite path validation documentation around
isAllowedPath: clarify that prefix checks alone do not enforce canonical
containment, and describe that the backend must require non-empty approved roots
and reject resolved paths outside them before opening SQLite. Do not claim
equivalent frontend validation unless it is implemented.

Review comments at
@packages/core/src/dera/reverse_engineering/exports/__init__.py:
- Around line 27-28: Update the exports package imports so `ExportRegistry`
comes from `registry` and `create_default_export_registry` comes from `service`,
where it is defined; keep `ExportService` imported from `service` as well.

Review comments at
@packages/core/src/dera/reverse_engineering/exports/csv_export.py:
- Line 95: Update the relationship and dependency exporters to use fields
present on their input models: use ForeignKeyEdge.object_id instead of edge_id,
and obtain the database name from an available source or add and populate
DependencyAnalysisResult.database_name before accessing it.

Review comments at
@packages/core/src/dera/reverse_engineering/exports/dot_export.py:
- Around line 78-81: Update the DOT export node iteration to use the tuple
directly rather than calling `.values()`, and use `TableNode` fields
`object_id`, `native_name`, and `namespace_name` for node IDs and labels. Update
`sort_export_nodes` to sort by those same fields, and apply the corresponding
field changes to the GraphML node loop.

Review comments at
@packages/core/src/dera/reverse_engineering/exports/graphml_export.py:
- Around line 89-94: Update the GraphML exporter to iterate over the tuple in
target_graph.nodes directly and use TableNode’s object_id, native_name, and
namespace_name fields; use ForeignKeyEdge.object_id for edge IDs. Update
sort_export_nodes to order nodes using namespace_name, native_name, and
object_id so the shared sorter matches the current graph model.

Merge Risk: Critical · previous review e418c

As written, the API cannot start because two new export modules import symbols that do not exist. Once that is fixed, viewers can still create, edit, and delete connections; anonymous callers can trigger outbound connection probes; SQLite paths can escape approved directories; and snapshot creation, most export formats, and artifact downloads fail at runtime. Schema inspection also shows placeholder metadata rather than real database contents. This should not merge until these are fixed.

Security architecture risk: High · up to e418c

The new capabilities do not consistently separate read-only workspace access from administrative actions, and unsaved connection probing is not bound to an authenticated workspace. SQLite containment and metadata provenance also have material gaps. A startup failure currently blocks the normal API from serving these routes, but does not resolve their design risks.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: New connection create, update, and delete routes use a workspace resolver that checks only SCHEMA_READ, although the role policy excludes connection mutations from VIEWER. Snapshot and export creation reuse that resolver despite distinct creation permissions. This collapses the intended read-versus-mutate authority boundary when the routes are operational; it does not establish anonymous or cross-workspace access.
  • High · security · inferred: The new raw connection-test route has no authentication or workspace dependency and forwards caller-selected host, port, and credentials into a connector using a fixed ephemeral context. MySQL-family validation permits private networks, so operationalizing this route would expose API-origin database-protocol probing of reachable private destinations. Existing loopback, prohibited-target, and read-only controls narrow this scope; the current startup blocker prevents asserting live exploitability.
  • Medium · security · inferred: SQLite admission checks lexical prefixes rather than resolved workspace containment. The generic-to-SQLite adapter supplies no approved storage roots, whose default is empty, so connector canonicalization does not restore the missing boundary. Prefix-preserving traversal or symlinks can therefore select existing readable files outside the named directories if execution reaches the connector. The demonstrated API operation is a read-only diagnostic probe, not arbitrary file-content extraction. Updates also store database paths without repeating creation-time validation.
  • Medium · architecture · observed: The inspection endpoint does not inspect the configured database. It creates an empty schema with a public namespace and hard-coded source version, then registers it as the schema consumed by snapshot and export services. This crosses the extraction-to-trusted-metadata boundary without source verification. Subsequent fingerprints can attest to those constructed contents, but cannot establish authentic extraction provenance.
  • High · reliability · inferred: The new export module imports DEFAULT_EXPORT_LIMITS, which the reviewed limits module does not define. The application factory imports the root router, which unconditionally imports the reverse-engineering aggregator and export module. Static import resolution therefore predicts failure of the whole normal API startup, rather than isolation to the optional export capability. This also blocks ordinary runtime reachability of the security-sensitive routes described above.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If the startup blocker is removed without changing these controls, the unauthenticated probe's independently attackable scope includes permitted destinations reachable from the API host and existing readable files selected through the SQLite path gap. The permission mismatch separately affects resources in a workspace where the caller has active membership. Cross-workspace object access, arbitrary file-byte disclosure, database-row extraction, and source-database mutation were not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained authorization, SSRF, and path-traversal entries overlap around the shared workspace resolver and raw probe. The new route definitions introduce those authority transitions; they are not unchanged pre-existing endpoints. Their deployment reachability is qualified by the exact-head startup failure.
  • observed — The security assessment also retains diagnostic-disclosure and CSV-injection findings. The raw probe returns exception text, while the CSV sanitizer checks a stripped value but may return the original value. Password omission and CSV safe-mode escaping are counterevidence, not complete proofs of safety. A concrete credential leak or successful end-to-end spreadsheet attack was not independently demonstrated; the normal export/download path has additional blocking contract defects.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Tenant membership enforcement and action authorization are separate controls here: ordinary workspace requests validate active membership, but then authorize only schema reading. The raw probe bypasses that workspace path entirely and creates an execution context without an authenticated user.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Export creation generates a fresh identifier and synchronously stores artifact and succeeded-job records after generation. The inspected default service has no export expiration or deletion operation. Per-export size and elapsed-time checks occur after generation and do not bound aggregate retained artifacts. This leaves retention ownership and shared-process resource containment unresolved, rather than proving a remotely exploitable exhaustion path through the currently blocked API.
  • inferred — A persisted probe can outlive deletion of its connection: it retains an entity reference across an await and later updates that detached object. SQLite probing also lacks an explicit close/finally path in its adapter. These observations leave cancellation, deletion, and resource-release semantics incomplete; they do not show that a deleted connection is reinserted or that retained resources persist indefinitely.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — A shared connection-execution policy could bind authenticated workspace identity, operation-specific authority, approved network destinations, resolved filesystem roots, sanitized diagnostics, and guaranteed cleanup before connector dispatch. Explicit retention and revocation ownership could similarly bound snapshot/export state independently of process lifetime.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(web): implement Phase 7.3 database connections and schema explorer" matches the main change. The changeset adds workspace database connection management (list, create, edit, test, delete) and a schema explorer, which are the primary features in the PR objectives and file summaries. The title is specific, under 72 characters, and uses a conventional commit style. It does not name the backend reverse-engineering API, export, snapshot, and RBAC work, but it does not need to cover every detail. The 'feat(web)' scope understates the backend changes, yet the title is still related to the change and is not misleading.

The overview and refresh descriptions do not match the page.

The Schema Overview tiles show namespaces, tables, views and FK links. They do not show column, constraint or index totals. The Refresh button calls loadSchemaData, which re-reads stored metadata and does not trigger backend re-inspection. Correct these two capability statements.

A failed load also shows the "no schemas" empty state.

When listSchemas fails, schemas stays [] and loading becomes false. The page then renders the ErrorState together with "No Extracted Schemas in Workspace". The empty state tells the user to connect a database, which is wrong when the API failed. Hide the empty state when an error is present.

The empty-constraint messages state absence even when metadata is incomplete.

These messages say "No primary key defined", "No foreign key constraints defined" and "No secondary indexes declared". They appear whenever the collection is empty, whatever the value of schemaSummary.completeness. For a partial or restricted extraction, missing catalog access then looks like a confirmed absence. This contradicts docs/frontend/METADATA_COMPLETENESS.md, which says "missing metadata is never presented as proof that an index or constraint does not exist". If completeness !== "complete", show a qualified message, for example "None captured (metadata is partial)".

The tree ARIA roles do not match the keyboard behavior.

role="tree" and role="treeitem" tell screen readers to expect arrow-key navigation and roving focus. This component has neither. The structure is also invalid:

  • A treeitem <div> contains an interactive <button>.
  • The child table treeitem buttons are not inside a role="group".
  • The namespace button has no aria-expanded.

Assistive technology then announces a widget that does not work as announced. A simpler fix is to remove the tree roles and use plain buttons:

  • Put aria-expanded on the namespace toggle.
  • Put aria-current="true" (or aria-pressed) on the selected table button.

The alternative is a full ARIA tree with arrow-key handling.

Tables after the first 500 are dropped without any notice.

listTables is called with limit: 500, and tblList.total_count is ignored. For a schema with more than 500 relations, the tree, the search, and the "Database Tables & Views" directory silently leave out the rest. The header still reports the full schemaSummary.table_count. Users cannot find or inspect the missing tables, and nothing tells them the list is incomplete. Do not reuse the load-error state for action failures.

handleInspect, handleEditSubmit, and handleDelete call setError(...) when they fail. Line 180 renders the full-page ErrorState titled "Connection Not Found" whenever error is set. A failed update, inspect, or delete therefore removes the loaded connection view and closes the edit dialog. It then tells the user the connection does not exist.

Use a separate actionError state. Show it near the control that failed. For the edit dialog, show it inside the form. Clear it when the user edits a field or retries. Keep error for load failures.

Proposed fix
+  const [actionError, setActionError] = React.useState<string | null>(null);
 ...

 ...
-      setError(err instanceof Error ? err.message : "Failed to delete connection.");
+      setActionError(err instanceof Error ? err.message : "Failed to delete connection.");

apps/web/src/providers/workspace-provider.tsx: 1

91-91: Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Gate page loaders on the workspace load state before requesting data.

The pages call their loaders on mount with the sentinel workspace ID, ws-default-local. The backend resolve_authorized_workspace_id rejects non-UUID IDs with HTTP 400 for authenticated requests. The pages then show an error state until the real workspace loads and the loader reruns.

Setting the provider's initial isLoading to true does not prevent the request. The mount effects do not read loading. Each affected page must skip its loader while the workspace load is pending.

🐛 Suggested fix for connections/page.tsx
   const loadConnections = React.useCallback(async () => {
-    if (!currentWorkspace?.id) {
+    if (workspaceLoading || !currentWorkspace?.id) {
       setLoading(false);
       return;
     }
-  }, [currentWorkspace?.id]);
+  }, [currentWorkspace?.id, workspaceLoading]);

Apply the same guard to loadSchemas in apps/web/src/app/(app)/schemas/page.tsx and to loadSchemaData in apps/web/src/app/(app)/schemas/[schemaId]/page.tsx. Add workspaceLoading to each dependency array. This change does not cover the case where listWorkspaces fails. The sentinel then remains active, and those requests still fail.

Log the exception server-side. Return a fixed error_code with a generic message. Apply the same mapping to result.error_message at Line 280, unless the connector guarantees sanitized text.

Proposed fix
-    except Exception as exc:
+    except Exception:
+        logger.exception("Connection test failed")
         latency = round((time.perf_counter() - start_time) * 1000, 2)
         return ConnectionTestResponse(
             success=False,
             latency_ms=latency,
             engine=payload.engine,
             error_code="CONNECTION_ERROR",
-            error_message=str(exc),
+ error_message="Unable to connect with the supplied settings.",
         )

Define logger = logging.getLogger(__name__) and import logging.

Based on learnings: "Backend services must not return raw database/internal error details... Catch exceptions and return a generic, user-safe error message."

Update the connection test failure handling and the mapping of
result.error_message so raw exception or connector text is never returned to
clients; log exception details server-side and use a fixed generic message with
the existing error code. Ensure error text stored in entity.error_message and
returned through ConnectionResponse is sanitized as well.

Clear testResult when connection parameters change.

A successful probe leaves the "Verified" banner on screen. The user can then edit host, port, database, username, password, or sslMode. The banner now describes values that were never tested. The user can save an unverified configuration while the UI still shows a pass.

Add an effect that clears testResult when any parameter changes.

Hide the empty state when a load error is present.

If listConnections fails, connections stays [] and loading becomes false. The page then shows the error banner and the "No Database Connections" empty state together. The empty state tells the user that no connections exist, but the request failed. Add !error to the condition.

`error` is absent, so a failed `listConnections` request shows the error banner

Show the delete error where the user can see it.

When deleteConnection fails, setDeletingConnection(null) does not run. The dialog stays open. The error renders in the page banner behind the modal overlay, so the user does not see it. The user sees only the button return from "Deleting..." with no explanation.

Close the dialog on failure so the banner becomes visible. Alternatively, render the error inside DialogContent.

Update the deleteConnection failure path to make the error visible: either clear
deletingConnection in the catch block so the dialog closes and exposes the page
banner, or render the error within DialogContent while keeping the dialog open.

Guard loadConnections against stale responses and stale workspace data.

loadConnections has no cancellation or ordering check. When currentWorkspace.id changes quickly, a slow response for workspace A can resolve after the response for workspace B. It then overwrites connections with workspace A data. The page shows the wrong workspace's connections under the new workspace badge.

Also, when currentWorkspace?.id is missing, the function returns early. It does not clear connections, so the previous workspace's list stays visible.

Track a request counter and ignore outdated results.

Update loadConnections to use a request counter so only the latest request can
update connections, errors, or loading state; increment it before checking
currentWorkspace?.id to invalidate in-flight requests when the workspace changes
or is absent. When no workspace ID is available, also clear connections before
returning.

Correct the backend vault claim.

ConnectionService stores passwords in a process-local dictionary, not a backend vault. A restart also removes the saved connections. Describe this temporary storage accurately, or implement the promised durable secret storage before publishing the specification. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
