Summary

DERA Phase 7.5 delivers the Table Inspector, Advanced Search & Dependency Visualization Studio.
Building upon the Phase 7.1 frontend foundation, Phase 7.2 authentication & workspace isolation, Phase 7.3 database connections & schema explorer, Phase 7.4 ER canvas, and Phase 6.1–6.6 canonical backend APIs, Phase 7.5 introduces a comprehensive, deterministic database object inspection and structural dependency analysis suite.

Change Type

  • Feature (feat)
  • Bug fix (fix)
  • Documentation (docs)
  • Refactor (refactor)
  • Performance (perf)
  • Test improvement (test)
  • CI/CD or Build (ci, build)
  • Security enhancement (security)
  • Breaking change (!)

Implementation Details

  • Table Inspector (/tables/[tableId]):
    • TableMetadataHeader: Displays native table identity, namespace, engine badge (postgresql, sqlite, mysql, mariadb), completeness status (COMPLETE, PARTIAL, RESTRICTED), snapshot indicator, and action links to the ER Canvas, Dependency Explorer, and Schema Explorer.
    • TableSummaryCards: Stat counters for columns, primary keys, foreign keys, unique constraints, check constraints, and indexes. Clicking any card switches the active tab.
    • ColumnsTab: Ordinal column table with client-side sorting, text filtering, primary/foreign key badges, and expandable column inspection rows.
    • ConstraintsTab: Constraint inspection supporting multi-column composite primary keys, composite foreign key mappings, referential actions (ON UPDATE, ON DELETE), unique constraints, and inert check constraint expressions.
    • IndexesTab: Index inspection displaying indexed columns, uniqueness, and primary status.
    • DependenciesTab: Immediate upstream and downstream dependencies with cycle status detection and direct link to the Dependency Explorer.
    • RawMetadataTab: Formatted JSON representation of the canonical table object with clipboard copy action.
  • Advanced Schema Search (/search):
    • SchemaSearchStudio: Cross-schema search coordinator with 300ms debouncing, in-flight cancellation via AbortController, and keyboard shortcut (/).
    • SearchFiltersPanel: Object type pills (tables, views, columns, constraints, indexes, namespaces), schema selector, namespace selector, constraint category filter, active filter badges with reset.
    • SearchResultsList: Paginated results with object badges, matched field/snippet, keyboard accessibility, rows-per-page selector (10, 25, 50).
  • Dependency Explorer (/dependencies & /dependencies/[objectId]):
    • DependencySummaryBanner: High-level metrics for tables, edges, cycles, SCC count, cyclic SCCs, parallel levels.
    • CycleAnalysisPanel: Elementary cycles with table loops and breakability strategies (DEFER_FOREIGN_KEY, NULLIFY_COLUMN, RESTRICT), SCC component lists, database cycle educational guidance.
    • ExecutionOrderingPanel: Parallel migration levels, strict topological creation order, reverse topological drop order.
    • TransitiveReachabilityPanel: Focus table selector, depth controls (1, 2, 3, Transitive), upstream prerequisites vs. downstream blast radius lists.
    • AccessibleDependencyTable: Semantic HTML table for 100% WCAG 2.2 AA non-visual dependency inspection.
  • Universal Object Inspector Abstraction:
    • InspectorObjectKind (table, view, materialized_view, collection, document_type, database_resource) and InspectorObject model for future NoSQL/Cloud resource extensibility without misrepresenting document collections as relational tables.
  • Strict Security & Zero-AI:
    • Zero AI/LLM dependencies, zero heuristic guessing, 100% untrusted text rendering preventing XSS, and workspace isolation headers.

Findings

Major Pass objectId to the explorer. The deep-link route ignores it.
Major Do not show the "Immutable Snapshot" banner for an unverified query parameter.
Major A stale search keeps crawling after cleanup.
Major The "Views" filter returns no views, and "Tables" also returns views.
Major Several advertised filters can never produce results.

use it, so deep links open the default explorer instead of focusing the
requested object. Extract the DependenciesPage body into a shared
DependenciesView that accepts focusTableId, use it from both routes, and render
it here with objectId; do not add props to the page default export.

cancelled before each schema iteration and each table-detail request, exiting
the stale search before it issues further API calls; preserve the existing final
setRawResults guard.
- Around line 105-106: Update the table filtering logic around matchesTable to
derive each result’s kind from t.table_type before applying the objectType
filter. Match that kind so “Views” returns views and “Tables” excludes them,
then reuse the derived kind for the result’s objectType.
- Line 93: Update the search collection flow in SchemaSearchStudio so table,
view, and namespace searches skip getTableDetail, and ensure every advertised
filter and constraint category produces results; otherwise remove unsupported
options and documentation claims, including the claims in SCHEMA_SEARCH.md. Add
namespace, unique, check, completeness, table-comment, and check-expression
handling only if retaining those advertised features.

Possibly related PRs

  • krishanth7/dera#58: Adds the ER graph used by the relationship studio and linked inspector and dependency views.
  • krishanth7/dera#57: Adds API endpoints and client methods used by the new inspection and dependency routes.
  • krishanth7/dera#52: Adds dependency analysis and cycle results displayed in the Dependency Explorer.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 71135

Several new features do not work as described. The ER diagram shows tables without columns, some search filters return nothing, the dependency deep link ignores the requested table, and the table inspector can claim an immutable snapshot that was never loaded. These should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge. Nothing here causes data loss or exposes data.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 71135

The new views preserve the inspected server-side workspace authorization controls. A new relationship request allows URL-supplied schema identifiers to alter the intended API route, with a demonstrated routing and response-shape failure rather than unauthorized workspace access. Asynchronous relationship results also lack selection-identity guards, although cross-user exposure has not been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The newly reachable schema-relationship client inserts a URL-derived schema identifier directly into an authenticated API path. Embedded route syntax can select a different relationship endpoint and violate the graph response contract. The traced alternate endpoint retains workspace authorization, so this is a bounded request-routing flaw rather than demonstrated unauthorized metadata access.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The demonstrated path-manipulation outcome affects a credentialed GET to the configured API base and the caller's graph response contract. The traced schema-wide and table-specific relationship endpoints independently authorize workspace access. The evidence does not demonstrate cross-workspace access, credential disclosure, or gained write authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Both retained findings concern the new schema-relationship request path. URL-derived schemaId reaches raw path interpolation and fetch; a crafted identifier can select the table-relationships endpoint and return an incompatible response shape. The unit-test anchor uses mocked fetch to exercise that production method and does not establish a separate production sink.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new table-inspector caller supplies its current workspace and URL-selected schema/table identifiers to the pre-existing table-detail API. That endpoint resolves the authorized workspace before looking up the schema and table, preserving server-side object ownership enforcement despite the new frontend reachability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The relationship loader retains graph state while requests run and renders its status independently of loading/error gates. This limits client-side context separation during reload and failure recovery even though server-side authorization is recomputed for each request.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply consistent identifier-segment encoding to schema-wide relationship requests, matching the per-table relationship method, so identifiers cannot act as API route syntax.
  • proposed — Associate relationship-view state with a workspace/schema request generation, invalidate previous display state on identity changes, and accept success, error, and completion updates only from the current generation.

Add tab semantics to the ordering sub-tabs.

These three buttons switch the visible content on the same route. Give the container role="tablist". Give each button role="tab" and aria-selected. Give the content region role="tabpanel". Without this, assistive technology cannot report the active sub-view.

Based on learnings: if clicking switches visible content sections within the same page/route, implement as ARIA tabs.

Implement ARIA tabs for the section switcher.

These buttons switch the visible panel on the same route. A <nav> with plain buttons is therefore the wrong pattern. Screen readers receive no active-state information. The PR also claims WCAG 2.2 AA.

Use role="tablist" on the container. Give each button role="tab", aria-selected, aria-controls, and an id. Give the panel container role="tabpanel" and aria-labelledby.

-        <nav aria-label="Table inspection sections" className="flex space-x-1 sm:space-x-4 overflow-x-auto">
+        <div role="tablist" aria-label="Table inspection sections" className="flex space-x-1 sm:space-x-4 overflow-x-auto">
               <button
                 key={tab.id}
                 type="button"
+                role="tab"
+                id={`inspector-tab-${tab.id}`}
+                aria-selected={isActive}
+                aria-controls={`inspector-panel-${tab.id}`}
                 onClick={() => setActiveTab(tab.id)}

Also add role="tabpanel", id={inspector-panel-${activeTab}}, and aria-labelledby={inspector-tab-${activeTab}} to the panel wrapper at Line 106.

Based on learnings: if clicking switches visible content sections within the same page/route, implement as ARIA tabs with aria-selected/aria-controls wiring.

Move the asserted logic into production code, or remove these tests.

These tests assert on fixtures declared in the same file. The "creation order" and "drop order" tests check a hand-written array and its reverse. The "search matching" tests run an inline filter on a local array. The only production imports are types.

No production code runs, so these tests cannot fail on a regression. The BFS and search logic lives inside React components (TransitiveReachabilityPanel, SchemaSearchStudio).

Extract pure helpers, such as computeReachability and a search matcher, and test those helpers.

Use ARIA tabs for the view switcher.

These buttons swap the visible panel on the same route. They have no role="tab", aria-selected, or tabpanel wiring. Screen readers cannot tell which view is active.

Apply role="tablist" to the container and role="tab" with aria-selected and aria-controls to each button. Add role="tabpanel" with aria-labelledby to the panel wrapper at Line 141. Use the same pattern as in TableInspector.

orientation is in the dependency array. Toggling the orientation recreates loadGraphData, and the effect on line 208 then refetches the relationship graph and table list.

Each toggle therefore:

  • shows the loading skeleton,
  • clears selection,
  • resets the viewport,
  • discards manual node positions.

Fetching is only needed when the workspace or schema changes. Keep the fetched rawGraph and model in state. Run computeDeterministicLayout in a separate effect or handler that depends on orientation.

Toggle buttons do not expose their state to assistive technology.

The view-mode, Filters, and Legend buttons show their on/off state only through the variant color. Screen reader users cannot tell whether the filter bar or legend is open. Add aria-pressed to the Filters and Legend buttons. The view-mode button already changes its visible label, so it is lower priority.

Fix node column enrichment. It never produces columns.

apiClient.listTables returns TableSummaryItem[]. That type has column_count but no columns array. The local tableSummaries type (columns?: any[]) hides this, so matched?.columns is always undefined. Every node gets columns: [].

Effects:

  • Cards show "0 cols" and no PK/FK markers.
  • Card height is computed for zero columns.
  • Column-name search in the filter finds nothing.
  • The AccessibleGraphTable primary key column is always "None".
  • RelationshipDetails shows an empty column list.

limit: 100 also silently drops tables beyond 100 even if columns existed.

Fetch real column data. Options:

  • Call apiClient.getTableDetail for each node, in bounded batches.
  • Add a backend endpoint that returns columns with the relationship graph.

Map ColumnDetailItem to ColumnItem (is_foreign_key is computed in buildGraphModel). Remove the any[] cast.

The unit and component tests build columns by hand, so they do not catch this.

Major · Fix TB layout. Rank rows overlap when rank heights differ. · layout.ts:310-313

apps/web/src/components/er-diagram/layout.ts:310-313
Major · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Fix TB layout. Rank rows overlap when rank heights differ.

y is CANVAS_PADDING + r * (maxHeight + rankSeparation). maxHeight is the maximum height of the current rank only. The offset for rank r is not the sum of the previous ranks' heights.

Example: rank 0 has a 300px table and rank 1 has 100px tables. Rank 1 starts at 60 + 1 * (100 + 100) = 260. Rank 0 ends at 60 + 300 = 360. The cards overlap. Card heights vary with column count (up to 8 visible columns), so this is common.

Accumulate a running currentY across ranks.

Proposed fix
-    sortedRanks.forEach((r) => {
+    let rankY = CANVAS_PADDING;
+    sortedRanks.forEach((r) => {
       const bucket = rankBuckets.get(r)!;
       let currentX = CANVAS_PADDING;

       // Find max height in this rank for consistent Y spacing
       const maxHeight = Math.max(...bucket.map((n) => n.height));

       bucket.forEach((node) => {
-        const y = CANVAS_PADDING + r * (maxHeight + options.rankSeparation);
+        const y = rankY;
         node.x = currentX;
         node.y = y;
         ...
       });
+      rankY += maxHeight + options.rankSeparation;
     });

The sketch assumes the elided lines inside the bucket.forEach callback stay unchanged. The doc formula in ER_LAYOUT_ALGORITHMS.md for TB should then use a cumulative sum of rank heights.

Wire completeness and provenance fields before documenting these badges.

The relationship route renders GraphStatus without completeness or collectionTimestamp. GraphStatus therefore defaults to "complete" and omits the timestamp. A partial or restricted graph will appear complete, and the documented collection time never appears. Pass the selected schema metadata into GraphStatus, or narrow this specification. Provide column data before documenting column search.

The relationship API returns nodes without columns, and the table-list API returns summaries with column_count, not columns. The relationship route then assigns columns: matched?.columns || [], so real graph nodes receive empty column lists. Column search and column rows therefore do not work. Extend the response contract or fetch table details before relying on this feature. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Move orientation out of the loadGraphData dependencies.

orientation is in the dependency array. Toggling the orientation recreates loadGraphData, and the effect on line 208 then refetches the relationship graph and table list.
