Confirm band pairing only after a working BLE bootstrap - #654
Selecting a band in the iOS accessory picker could be reported as "Paired" even when BLE setup failed. AppState saved the device before opening the session, while a failed connect returned normally, allowing onboarding to advance without a working link.
Verify the first connection before saving the pairing. A failed attempt releases foreground ownership and native restore intent while retaining the ASK grant for Retry. The normal reconnect supervisor starts after confirmation. Also wait for CoreBluetooth's startup state to settle before connect, and classify the native state included in flutter_blue_plus errors instead of treating its generic "Bluetooth must be turned on" wording as proof the radio is off.
Pairing persistence uses a database transaction covering the device row and wearing adoption. A preference write that throws or returns false rolls back that transaction and restores the previous mirror before the next queued pairing operation. Idle and retry instructions now agree across all six translated locales.
Validation:
Current revision: 487 targeted tests passed, including 18 new failure/rollback regressions; full flutter analyze and flutter gen-l10n passed on the isolated PR branch.
Initial revision da541252, signed iOS Release build on iPhone 17, iOS 27.0.1, WHOOP MG firmware 50.43.1.0: after forgetting the previous pairing, the first attempt produced ATT encryption error 15; retry after entering pairing mode completed HELLO and synced 400 records across 11 acknowledged chunks with zero dropped records.
All 726 pre-test raw rows and the existing derived day remained present; SQLite integrity_check passed.
User-reported hardware checks passed: three cold opens without re-pairing, Bluetooth off/on from Settings, and return after 5–10 minutes locked. The subsequent log capture shows repeated session starts and completed offloads; some log lines are incomplete.
WHOOP freeze golden and Mi scale tests passed in UTC, Asia/Kolkata, and America/New_York (12 tests per zone).
Full serial suite at da541252 on macOS: 6,644 passed, 28 skipped, 1 failed. The failure in health_workout_export_delete_gate_test.dart (failed-delete case) also reproduces on unmodified upstream main 797a9a4f. The test assumes a non-Apple host, while HealthExporter.isApple is true on macOS; it is unrelated to this patch. Linux CI has not been run for this patch.
Android and WHOOP 4.0 have automated regression coverage but have not been tested on physical hardware for this patch.
Related to #627 and #633. This changes pairing confirmation, startup readiness, and retry behavior; it does not establish that every persistent authentication/encryption failure reported in those issues has the same cause.
Summary by Sourcery
Confirm band pairings only after a verified BLE bootstrap and make failed pairing, adapter startup, and persistence operations safely retryable.
New Features:
Require a successful BLE bootstrap before confirming and persisting a newly selected band.
Preserve failed pairing attempts for retry while releasing foreground ownership and preventing reconnect supervision until confirmation.
Bug Fixes:
Prevent Bluetooth startup and CoreBluetooth transient states from being misclassified as a powered-off adapter.
Make pairing persistence atomic across the database and preferences, restoring the prior mirror when preference writes fail.
Prevent failed or interrupted pairing attempts from advancing onboarding or recreating a forgotten pairing.
Enhancements:
Wait for BLE adapter readiness before issuing connection commands and improve native blocker classification.
Align pairing idle and retry guidance across all supported locales.
Tests:
Add regression coverage for pairing confirmation, retry cleanup, persistence rollback, adapter readiness, and native Bluetooth-state classification.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Pairing now confirms the band connects successfully before saving it.
Pairing is prevented while another attempt is in progress or a different band is already paired.
Bug Fixes
Bluetooth setup checks that the adapter is on before connecting and reports setup failures.
Pairing changes are saved together to help keep device details consistent if a save fails.
Documentation
Updated pairing guidance across supported languages: remove the band from your wrist, tap it until it flashes blue, and keep your phone nearby. If pairing fails, restore pairing mode before retrying.
The PR changes pairing from picker-selection-based persistence to confirmed BLE bootstrap: AppState now saves a band only after a successful initial connection, failed attempts cleanly release transient ownership while retaining retry authorization, and BLE startup/error handling waits for CoreBluetooth readiness and classifies native states accurately. New tests cover confirmation timing, cleanup and retry behavior, adapter readiness, and blocker classification.

Walkthrough
The BLE engine checks adapter state before connecting. Pairing saves a candidate identity only after a verified bootstrap. Device and preference updates use a transaction. Pairing guidance describes how to enter pairing mode and retry.

connectForPairing confirms a candidate only after bootstrap and connection checks pass. AppState persists the identity in the confirmation callback and guards pairing attempts. Pairing now persists the band only after a working BLE bootstrap. A data reset that overlaps pairing does not leave the band paired. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains.

**Failed save leaves paired band behind**
When a preferences write fails after the database upsert succeeds, `PairedDevice.save` throws after writing the device row, so `confirm` does not update the in-memory `paired` state and `connectForPairing` disconnects. The row remains, so a later load reports the band as paired despite the current pairing error.
Roll back the device-row upsert if saving the preferences mirror fails.

Sourcery assessment
Needs a human reviewer. 1 finding to address first, and if the bootstrap check incorrectly treats a peripheral as ready, its ID can be saved as the paired band and used by later sessions. Reverting the code would not remove that saved pairing or any data collected under it; the pairing would need to be explicitly cleared.
