batch of bug fixes from recent reports: pairing/sync reliability, steps, health export, import, a couple of ui fixes. bumps kAlgoVersion to 120.
Summary by Sourcery
Harden pairing, synchronization, health export, import, step derivation, and related UI behavior against recently reported reliability and data-integrity issues.
Bug Fixes:
Improve Bluetooth pairing and synchronization reliability by correctly handling authentication refusals, terminal offload tasks, stalled history, stuck straps, and live-stream ownership during drains.
Correct Gen5 step derivation so larger on-device totals are retained when they exceed windowed phone or live measurements.
Make health export safer and more accurate by exporting only applicable strap-counter step spans, completing legacy cleanup before writes, and preventing writes while deletes are still pending.
Allow WAL-mode backup files without accompanying WAL data to be repaired and imported successfully.
Fix UI issues with zone editing under the keyboard and dismissing numeric keyboards, and simplify skin-temperature chart labels.
Enhancements:
Expose additional synchronization diagnostics and test hooks for offload and history-gate behavior.
Tests:
Add coverage for synchronization termination and stalled-frontier handling, authentication-refusal recovery, live-stream ownership, step-source selection, health-export deletion safety, WAL backup repair, and related policy behavior.
Chores:
Bump the derivation algorithm version from 119 to 120.

Bug Fixes
Improved Bluetooth sync handling for connection refusals, stalled transfers, and sessions that end without completing.
Improved step-count calculations and health exports, including filtering invalid strap data and replacing outdated strap-measured records after cleanup succeeds.
Improved recovery for certain backup database files.
Heart-rate zone settings can scroll on smaller screens, and tapping outside a journal text field dismisses the keyboard.
Style
Overnight sleep charts show low-to-high ranges for applicable measurements; skin-temperature charts show the value without a range.
ios bonds implicitly, so a key the band no longer accepts only shows up as
an att 5/15 on the first notify registration. we just failed the connect and
looped forever with no re-pair guide. count it like a refused bond, and let a
command reply end the refusal streak since ios never runs createBond.
a task that hit its terminal still held the offload claim while its abort
went out, so the burst read it as running and sent another request, 20
per burst. also stop when batches carry no records behind a stuck
frontier (off-wrist strap), that isn't a stale block to drain through.
arming r10/imu mid-burst silences the strap, the idle watchdog aborts
after 60s and the drain starts over. hr still arms; the bundle goes out
when the offload ends.
stuck-strap only ran after HISTORY_COMPLETE and skipped a null frontier, so a
band that never answers SEND_HISTORICAL_DATA (or a fresh pair with nothing
banked yet) looped forever showing connected. check it on the no-start
terminal too and treat nothing-banked as a frozen frontier.
This PR consolidates reported reliability fixes across BLE pairing, sync/offload state machines, step derivation, health export, backup import, and UI, including algorithm version 120; review the terminal-state transitions and source-selection/export rules closely because they alter retry behavior and persisted step outputs.

The PR updates BLE connection and sync handling, Gen5 step derivation, strap-counter Health export, backup database header repair, and interactions in the zone editor, journal text field, and sleep chart.
Changes: BLE connection and sync
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Sync completion and continuation lib/ble/ble_engine.dart, lib/state/sync_controller.dart
SyncReport now indicates when a task ended. The controller uses that state and history-gate drop counts when deciding whether to continue a sync burst.
Stuck-strap detection evaluates a present strap timestamp against an empty local frontier. The engine retains detector state across reconnects and observes stuck-strap state after timeout and completed-offload paths.
Authentication and bond refusal handling lib/ble/ble_state.dart, lib/ble/ble_engine.dart
Authentication-refusal codes are classified and refusal accounting is applied across legacy and Gen5 connection paths. A command reply resets the refusal streak and count.
The calibrated counter is selected when its positive total exceeds the windowed total. The algorithm version advances to 120.
Health step export
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Validate and export strap-counter spans lib/health/health_export.dart
The exporter validates and writes strap-counter spans. Per-day deletion and writing are controlled by purge completion, and native deletes are tracked after timeouts.
Backup database header repair
Layer / File(s)
Summary
WAL-mode and page-count repair lib/import/noop_backup_import.dart
The public repair method copies WAL-mode databases and normalizes their journal-mode bytes. It also updates the declared page count when the actual count is higher.
UI interactions and sleep chart
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Editor scrolling and focus lib/ui2/activity/zones.dart, lib/ui2/screens/journal_compose.dart
The zone editor content is scrollable. Tapping outside the journal text field unfocuses the current focus scope.
A delete completing after the 30-minute tracking limit can erase newly exported health samples without automatic recovery. Failed reconnects can also cause false strap-reboot warnings. Resolve or explicitly accept these bounded risks before merging.

Account for authentication failures on command writes.
On iOS, the first encrypted command write can trigger pairing. If that write fails with an authentication refusal, _write converts the exception to false, so the new setup catches never record it. The user can remain connected without working commands or a re-pair guide. Propagate the refusal to the connect attempt and count it once there. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Update `_write` so an authentication refusal from a command write propagates to
the connect attempt instead of being converted to `false`; preserve the existing
`false` behavior for other write failures. Ensure the connect-attempt path
records and counts the refusal exactly once, without adding duplicate accounting
in `_write`.

Resolve counter steps by window.
If the counter records 6,000 steps while the phone records 5,000 in a disjoint window, this selects 6,000 and discards the phone’s steps. Merge counter ticks outside the resolved windows instead of choosing one whole-day total.

Prevent overlapping phone steps from reaching health export.
This condition can select strap_counter when phone steps are present. healthStepSpans then exports the counter spans without excluding phone-covered windows, contrary to its phone-step contract. Consumers that sum both sources can count the same walk twice. Pass coverage information to the exporter and exclude overlapping windows. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use the selected step source for walking energy.
When the counter wins, _buildWakeDayFeatures still calculates cadence from stepSpans, which contains only the windowed sources. Counter steps outside those windows therefore contribute no walking-cadence energy, even when the corresponding HR is available. Derive the energy input from the selected step coverage too.

disjoint windows: known ceiling, marked ponytail: in the code. counter ticks per window exist
(counterTicksPerWindow) but merging them changes the day's spans, the export and the goldens; kept
for a follow-up. max() never adds the two, so nothing is double counted.
export overlap: when the counter wins it is the day's answer; Apple Health and Health Connect both
dedupe overlapping steps across apps by the user's source priority, so the phone's own samples and
ours aren't summed there.
walking energy: counter spans are hourly totals, cadence pricing needs per-minute windows; feeding
hourly counts in would smear cadence across the hour. those minutes are still priced by the HR path.

@abdulsaheel, understood. My review did not distinguish the accepted limitation from the other two concerns.
Disjoint windows: The undercount remains real, but the ponytail: comment already documents it. I accept deferring window-level merging to a follow-up. The whole-day maximum does not add overlapping counts.
Health export: I withdraw the requirement to exclude phone-covered windows from independent strap measurements. Apple Health uses source priority, and Health Connect applies priority-based deduplication through its Aggregate API. This does not protect consumers that read and sum raw records; Android explicitly recommends aggregation for steps. citeturn830258search2turn830258search0turn830258search3
Walking energy: I withdraw the proposed use of hourly counter spans for minute-level cadence pricing. Hourly totals cannot establish cadence within individual minutes. The HR path remains available, subject to its existing input and intensity gates; HR availability alone does not guarantee active-energy credit.
The disjoint-window finding is deferred, not fixed. Would you like me to open a follow-up GitHub issue for window-level step merging and its span, export, and golden-test changes?

Preserve the start of a long offline interval.
If reconnect attempts keep failing, each _failConnect() calls _teardownSession() and replaces _linkDownAt. After more than five minutes out of range, a successful reconnect can therefore retain the old stuck-strap observation. If its first history request then goes unanswered, _observeStuckStrap() can immediately show a false reboot warning and send SET_CLOCK. Keep the first link-down timestamp across failed attempts, and clear it when a connection becomes ready.

Keep a timed-out native delete pending until it settles, or withhold writes for its range.
The 30-minute cap at lib/health/health_export.dart:507 drops a pending delete from _pendingDeletes while its native call may still run. A later pass then deletes and writes the same range, and the late delete can remove those new samples. The next day is not re-exported, so the loss is not recovered.
I did not include a diff. Removing the cap would keep writes blocked after a native call that never returns, which is the case the cap was added for. A safe replacement needs a design decision.

@coderabbitai keeping the cap on purpose, it's marked in the code. without it a native delete that never calls back would block every later write of that type forever, which is a worse failure than the rare late delete. a native call outliving 30 min hasn't been seen; the delete itself already has its own timeout and the hold covers the tail. follow-up if it shows up in reports.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@abdulsaheel Understood. The code documents the 30-minute cap as an intentional trade-off to prevent indefinite export blocking. I won’t press for a change in this PR.
The late-delete risk remains possible because Future.timeout does not cancel the native call, but you have explicitly accepted that risk. Follow-up can wait for reports, as you propose.
