People keep pairing their WHOOP as a plain heart-rate sensor without realising it. Two reports from our Discord:

  • a WHOOP 5.0 named "Jordan's WHOOP" came up as a Tier 1 Experimental heart-rate sensor;
  • a WHOOP 4.0 was paired the same way.

The cause: when its HR broadcast is on, a WHOOP also advertises the standard heart-rate service (0x180D). HrsLink.scanFor filters on that service alone, so the sensor scan lists the band and saves it as ble_hrs. You then get heart rate during workouts and none of sleep, recovery, strain, HRV or skin temperature, and nothing tells you.

This PR puts the band first. It also stops the scan and the pairing step from saving a band as a sensor unless you pick that on purpose, after seeing what each choice gets you.

What you see.

  • Before:
    • First run listed every nearby device.
    • Settings had an "Add a sensor" list, where a WHOOP could show up next to chest straps. Tapping it saved the WHOOP as a heart-rate sensor without a word.
  • First run:
    • "Pair your band" lists only WHOOP 4 and WHOOP 5. One line says the main band is WHOOP 4.0 or 5.0/MG only.
    • Below the list, an always-open "Trouble connecting?" card shows the pairing-mode steps for the WHOOP 4 and WHOOP 5, with links to WHOOP's own pages and our Discord.
  • Settings: a "Pair a device" section with "Pair your band" (or your current band) and "Add a device".
  • Add a device:
    • "Add a device" replaces "Add a sensor". It scans every supported device once and tells you where each one fits.
    • Picking a device opens a sheet with one table: what you get Every day and what you get for Workouts only. The column the device goes into is highlighted.
    • A WHOOP offers "Pair it as my band", or "Use it for workouts only". If you already have a band, the main button is "Unpair and pair this one", behind one confirm.
    • Rings and watches (Oura, Colmi, Garmin…) fill "Every day" as a wearable for days without your WHOOP. They're marked experimental and need their switch on.
    • Chest straps fill "Workouts only".
    • Each sheet has a "Put it in pairing mode" section above the main button, with that device's steps. Where nobody has confirmed a device's own steps, it gets the general steps and a link to the maker's page.
    • Where a ✓ depends on what the device sends and we haven't confirmed it, the row says so for that column, e.g. "Workouts only: If this device sends it, not confirmed". Screen readers hear each cell with its row and column ("Sleep, Every day: sends").
    • For an Oura, a line before the steps says to keep the ring in the Oura app and pair with the key it already has; the reset steps are only for a new key.
    • A device that turns out to be a band while connecting gets the same sheet instead of being saved.
  • Pairing failed: you get reset steps for that device. Where nobody has confirmed the steps, the screen links the maker's official page. It never links a search engine. Generic Bluetooth heart-rate devices have no maker, so they get no link.
  • Device screen: the same table, with the column the device isn't in dimmed, plus its switch.

First run WHOOP sheet Oura sheet Settings

What changes:

  • lib/ble/band_identity.dart: band identity in three layers.
    1. Advertised service UUIDs and service data.
    2. The GATT services found on connect, checked before anything is saved. This layer decides.
    3. The name, as a hint only. WHOOP names are set during WHOOP setup ("'s WHOOP"), and WHOOP has no SIG company ID. A company ID alone never counts, because it names the maker, not the device: Garmin makes chest straps too.
Band evidence seen for a device id sticks to it, so a later standard-only GATT read can't erase it.
  • HrsLink: scan candidates carry band evidence. A new pairNotifyDevice seam returns a PairOutcome and refuses a device identified as a band unless it gets a confirmation bound to that device id and entry.
  • lib/ble/adapters/_registry.dart: every entry gets a role, a kind, resetSteps and canBeMainDevice. canBeMainDevice is true only for the framed WHOOP 4 and 5, because the main-band path (PairingScreen, AppState.isPaired) is WHOOP-only.
  • lib/ble/slot_comparison.dart: what each device gives you every day and for workouts only. It is derived from the compute rules (canonical.dart, the *_inputs.dart mappings and kWorkoutArmedSensors), not hand-written lists. No blood oxygen anywhere, because the pipeline refuses SpO2. Claims that depend on a switch or on what the device sends are marked as such.
  • lib/ble/reset_url.dart + a guard test: reset steps are specific, unverified(officialUrl) or noOfficialSite(reason), and each URL must be https on the host pinned for that device. A shrink-only list (kPairingFollowUp) names the devices still waiting on verified steps.
  • The main-band handoff carries the device you tapped. On Android the scan only accepts that device and that WHOOP generation. On iOS the system picker is where you choose.
  • lib/ui2/pairing/: the new screens, sheets and table, and the "Add a device" flow. devices.dart and pair_sensor.dart are rewired to use them.
  • Translations: 98 new keys in all 8 locales.

Design

Why the band comes first. Nearly everything is computed from the main band. If you pair only a heart-rate strap, you get workout heart rate and nothing else. So first run only offers the band, and doesn't talk about slots at all. The every-day / workouts-only split only shows up once you add another device.

Why not match the name. The advertised name is whatever you named the band during WHOOP setup, and anyone can drop "WHOOP" from it. WHOOP has no Bluetooth SIG company ID either. So the decision rests on service UUIDs: 61080001-… for gen 4 and fd4b0001-… for gen 5. They're seen in the advertisement and confirmed by GATT discovery before anything is saved. The name only orders and labels results.

Why a confirmation bound to the device. If the scan simply refused bands, someone who really wants a WHOOP as a workout heart-rate source couldn't do it. Instead, the sheet returns a PairConfirmation for that device id and entry, and only that lets pairNotifyDevice save it as a sensor. Pairing a WHOOP this way disconnects it from the WHOOP app, and the sheet says so.

Every day vs. workouts only. The app has three roles for a device: the main band (WHOOP), the active wearable (fills the days without the band), and the workout sensors. To a user, the first two answer the same question: does it give me my days? So they share the "Every day" column, and the table stays at two columns on a phone.

Replacing a band. "Unpair and pair this one" runs the existing unpair, then goes straight into pairing the device you tapped. Your data stays exactly as a normal unpair leaves it.

Reset steps. Each device declares one of three states. Unverified steps link the maker's own support page, never a search engine, because a search page can send people to the wrong instructions.

What does not change. WHOOP pairing itself (PairingScreen, and AccessorySetupKit on iOS), the sync engine, storage, the database schema, and the analytics outputs (no kAlgoVersion bump).

Tests

New: band_identity_test, pairing_device_role_test, slot_comparison_test, guards/pairing_reset_steps_guard_test, and the UI tests ui2_pair_band_view_test, ui2_pair_device_settings_test, ui2_pair_sheets_test, ui2_pairing_blocks_test, ui2_pairing_help_reset_test and ui2_device_slot_card_test. Shared helpers: guards/support/pairing_reset_fixtures and support/pair_ui_support. Extended: hrs_link_test and device_sources_test. Updated for the new flow: device_picker_test, pair_sensor_test, sensor_cap_test, ui2_router_test, russian_review_findings_test and ui2_tokens_test.

They cover, among other things:

  • A Garmin heart-rate strap is not mistaken for a watch.
  • A WHOOP known only by its name is never given a model.
  • The handoff accepts only the tapped device.
  • Replacing a band: a confirm, then the existing unpair, then pairing. Cancel does nothing, a failed unpair never opens pairing, and a second tap can't start a competing flow.
  • No blood-oxygen claim for any device.
  • The tables don't overflow in German at 2x text.
  • A WHOOP saved as a workout sensor on purpose is stored as a wrist-optical source, not as a beat-to-beat one.
  • An Oura that shows up in the strap scan opens the ring's own pairing screen.
  • The pairing-mode section shows the right steps for each device, and the "not confirmed" caption appears only where it should.

Runs, all with flutter test, one file at a time per run on Linux aarch64:

  • The files the change touches (73 batches): 4,213 passed, 6 skipped. The only failures were in ui2_router_test, and I've fixed them.
  • After the last review fixes (43 batches): 2,580 passed, 2 skipped, 0 failed.
  • After the CodeRabbit fixes and the latest UI changes (43 batches): 2,660 passed, 2 skipped, 1 failed. The failure was in app_state_regressions_test, and it passes alone. In the run before it, 7 arm/disarm tests in hrs_link_test failed the same way: they pass alone, and upstream main fails the same 7 when they share a batch with the same heavier files.
  • Full suite (flutter test, 2 workers) on b20b2efe: 7,329 passed, 28 skipped, 12 failed. None are from this PR. Eight ran on a cloud machine where the time zone can't be set (day_window_dst_test, luteal_flags_dst_test, band_step_spans_local_hour_test) or a handle test flaked once (wal_reader_connection_test); all eight pass on my machine. The other 4 are settings_report_l10n_test (es, fr, hi, zh: reportContactLabel, reportContactHint), which main a9b765a7 fails on its own.

flutter analyze is clean on each commit.

I haven't run this on my own phone yet.

Suggested review order

Commits are by concern. Each one compiles.

  1. a808cd3e (roles, band identity, safeguard): the commit that stops the bug. Read band_identity.dart first, then the role/kind/canBeMainDevice fields in _registry.dart, then hrs_link.dart: candidateFromAd, the sticky band evidence, pairNotifyDevice and PairOutcome. Main's adoptReplacementWearable step now runs inside the new save step.
  2. 7c659d11 (what each device gives you): slot_comparison.dart. Check that every ✓ traces to canonical.dart, an *_inputs.dart mapping or kWorkoutArmedSensors.
  3. 3fdf9f69 (reset steps, links, translations): resetSteps on each registry entry, reset_url.dart, and the guard test. Skim the arb files.
  4. 0e096f46 (screens):
    • pair_band_view.dart (first run);
    • devices.dart (Your band, the device page);
    • device_picker.dart and add_device_flow.dart (Add a device, replace band);
    • then the sheets, slot_comparison_view.dart (the table) and device_slot_card.dart.
    • The scan target for the handoff is in transport.dart, ble_state.dart and app_state.dart (3 lines).

Known limits

  • Translations. I machine-drafted the 7 non-English locales. Thai and Hindi especially need a native read.
  • Unverified reset steps. Most non-WHOOP devices have no confirmed reset steps yet. They get the general steps and a link to the maker's page.
  • WHOOP 4.0. I've only seen "tap until it flashes" confirmed on a 5.0.
  • Main band is WHOOP only. Other bands can fill your days as a wearable, but they can't be the main band.
  • iOS. The handoff can't pin the exact device there; the system picker decides.

Questions for reviewers

  1. Layout: the table (C1) or another option? Filter pills (K3) or another option?
  2. Is "Every day" / "Workouts only" clear, or would other words work better?
  3. Is "Pairing here disconnects it from the WHOOP app" true for a 4.0 as well as a 5.0?
  4. Does anyone have verified reset or pairing-mode steps for the devices on the follow-up list?
  5. Native speakers: can you check your language?

Keep an existing band link open when a connected band is paired as a sensor.

pairNotifySensor always calls device.disconnect() in its finally block. If the scan returns the main WHOOP while the app holds its link, that call drops the main band connection. Skip the disconnect when the device was already connected before pairing started.

Wait for Pebble bond completion before saving the device.

triggerBond() treats a successful write to the Pebble pairing characteristic as completed pairing. PebbleOS defines that write as a pairing trigger and exposes ble_is_bonded and last_pairing_result separately. If bonding remains pending or fails after the write acknowledgment, pairNotifyDevice can save a device without the bond required by PPoGATT. Gate persistence on the Pebble connectivity status reporting a successful bond, and reject or clean up when pairing fails or the connection closes before that state.

Claim the pairing slot before the cap read.

pair awaits LocalDb.deviceRows() before it sets _busy, so two taps on different sensors can both read the same remaining slot and both save. Set a synchronous in-flight flag before the first await, and clear it in a finally block. This keeps the sensor cap from being exceeded by overlapping pairings.

Do not set the generic heart-rate entry to chestStrap.

kBleHrs matches any device that advertises the Heart Rate service, including armbands and watches. Its kind: DeviceKind.chestStrap puts those devices under the chest-strap filter and shows strap-specific text when they pair without a band. Use a kind that does not assume a chest strap, or derive the kind from the device.

Leaving this one. chestStrap for the generic heart-rate entry is deliberate: the registry bans DeviceKind.other for entries (test/ui2_pairing_blocks_test.dart), and in practice the devices that pair through ble_hrs are overwhelmingly straps. An armband still pairs and works; it just sits under Straps in the filter.

@mikenrafter Understood. kBleHrs will remain under Straps, including for armbands. Thanks for explaining the trade-off.

Every registry entry now says whether it is a band or a sensor, what it
physically is, and whether it can be the main device (only a framed WHOOP
band can). A sensor scan records band evidence from the advertisement
(services, company id, service data, name) on each candidate, and the
pairing decision moves into pairNotifyDevice behind a small PairingIo
interface. It refuses to save a device that turns out to be a band unless
the user confirmed that exact device, and returns a PairOutcome instead of
a bare string.

Until the pairing screens ask about bands, the existing sensor screens treat
a band refusal as a failure.
@mikenrafter mikenrafter changed the title Pairing: band first, and a band can no longer be saved as a heart-rate sensor by accident (draft) Pairing: Clarify primary vs secondary device connection + details and give user pairing mode help Nov 6, 2026
slotComparisonFor(entry) says what a device gives as the main band and what
it gives as a secondary sensor, from the compute layer's own eligibility
rules (capabilities, columnFor, kWorkoutArmedSensors) rather than from the
raw signals it streams. Each capability that is missing or conditional
carries an l10n key for the reason.
Every registry entry declares what to tell a user whose device will not
finish pairing: device-specific steps, an unverified official help page
pinned to the vendor's host, or generic steps with the reason there is no
official site. resetUrlProblem() checks a link is https and on the pinned
host. A guard test keeps every entry covered and every step key translated,
and lists the entries still waiting for device-specific steps.

Adds the pairing strings to every locale (en, de, es, fr, hi, ru, th, zh),
with placeholder types in ru and th as their locale tests require.
First run and re-pair open "Pair your band": only the devices that can be
the main band (a WHOOP), filter pills, a heart-rate-strap-only path that
shows what a band would add, and an "I can't pair my band" help dialog with
reset steps and the vendor's official page. The WHOOP-only main band is
said plainly there and on My sources.

"Add a sensor" becomes "Add a device": one scan for sensors and bands.
A device that is (or also is) a band asks before anything is saved: pair
it as the main band, or keep it as a secondary sensor. Picking a workout
sensor with no band asks first too, and the category tiles get the same
confirmations as the nearby list. The sensor limit is still checked on
every pair; here its reason shows as the pair's failure.

My sources gets a "Pair a device" section (the band card or the paired
band with Unpair, then Add a device), and a paired secondary sensor's page
shows its role, what it sends and what it does not, instead of a tier
rung.

Align the Thai idle instructions with WHOOP 5 pairing.

After a user selects WHOOP 5, the idle screen tells them to wear the band. The new help tells them to remove it. This conflict can prevent users from putting the band in pairing mode. Align the WHOOP 5 idle instructions with the pairing guidance.

lib/ui2/pairing/add_device_flow.dart:154-173
Major · Functional Correctness · Heavy lift

Replacing the main band on iOS unpairs the old band and then blocks the new pairing.

On iOS 18 and later, _replace unpairs the current band before _handoff checks mainBandBlockedReason(). unpairSession() removes the AccessorySetupKit provisioning. After that, scanHeldBackReason() finds no provisioned band and returns the restart message. _handoff then returns bandFlowHeldBack and never calls openBandFlow. The user confirmed the replacement, so the old band is now unpaired and the new band is not paired. Recovery needs an app restart and a manual re-pair.

A reorder alone does not fix this. The blocker returns null while the old band is still provisioned, so a check placed before the unpair would not detect the block. The fix must decide, before any unpair, whether the handoff can open after the unpair. That needs a design decision about the blocker contract. No patch is proposed.

Comment thread lib/ui2/pairing/pair_sheets.dart Resolved
The shared Pebble entry marked heart rate, strain and recovery as sent for
both models. An SE alone derives no day (the sparse-HR substrate needs hr > 0),
so those rows now carry a 'Pebble 2 only' caption in all 8 locales, spoken in
each mark's screen-reader label. Sleep and steps stay: the SE's own readings
are shown through the observation read. The SE lead says the same.

PairingModeSection joins the pairing building blocks the gallery guard skips.

Check band identity before the required-characteristic check.

In pairNotifyDevice, a candidate with band evidence can fail the required-characteristic check before its band identity is evaluated. The user then gets the "does not expose the data" message instead of the band choice. Nothing is saved on this path, and the main-band flow stays reachable from Settings. The band cross-check depends only on the discovered services and earlierBand, not on the missing-characteristic result, so it can run first.

…ore the characteristic check

Pebble 2's recovery row is an estimate; the Pebble 2 only caption replaced
that. It now has its own caption with both conditions, in all 8 locales.

pairNotifyDevice ran the band cross-check after the required-characteristic
check, so a band missing the measurement characteristic got 'does not expose
the data' instead of the band choice. The cross-check needs only the
discovered services, so it runs first now.

On the outside-diff note about hrs_link.dart (band identity before the required-characteristic check): fixed in b4d9aec. pairNotifyDevice now runs the band cross-check right after discovery, so a band missing the measurement characteristic gets the band choice instead of "does not expose the data". New test in band_identity_test.dart covers a WHOOP 5 with no measurement characteristic.

afterConnect showed the band sheet and handed off with the default
modelKnown = true, so a WHOOP 5 heard by name only (matched as gen4) could
enter the band flow as a WHOOP 4. It now derives modelKnown from the
candidate, as the tap path does.

…s under its own entry

PairOutcome.band now says whether GATT proved the model or only the name
suggested it, so afterConnect stops inferring certainty from whether the
entry changed: a WHOOP 4 GATT confirms is named even when the name guessed it.

A ring or watch identified behind a heart-rate sensor (a Colmi heard as
ble_hrs) paired under ble_hrs on its 'Pair' choice, from the list and after a
connect: a workout-only strap with no ring sync, or a failure without 0x2A37.
It now pairs under its own entry.

b29ee4d made a ring or watch pair under its own entry; for a Mi Band that
was a plain notify save without its key, a row sync cannot use. Keyed
sensors (Oura, Mi Band 2/3/4) now end in their own screen on every choice,
and a test walks every sensor with a pick callback.
