Purpose

Follow-up to #3804, which added caller-set subscription IDs (externalRefId) and in-place plan and token updates to the gateway management API. This PR brings the same capabilities to the ap CLI, moves the CLI integration tests into the test framework, and adds scenarios for the new subscription commands.

Related PRs:

Changes

ap gateway subscription (CLI)

  • create: spec.externalRefId is used as the subscription ID. A non-string value is rejected before the request is sent.
  • update changes only the fields that are passed. --status is no longer required.
    • --subscription-plan-id: move the subscription to another plan.
    • --clear-subscription-plan: remove its plan (sends subscriptionPlanId: null).
    • --rotate-token: prompts for the new token with hidden input.
    • --subscription-token: passes the new token on the command line. Not recommended, because it ends up in shell history.
    • The CLI rejects conflicting or missing options before calling the gateway. When the gateway rejects an update, the CLI shows its reason (for example, "Subscription plan not found or not enabled").
  • Docs updated in docs/cli/gateway/README.md.

Fix: ap gateway add dropped --admin-server

An earlier refactor stopped saving --admin-server, so ap gateway health called the management URL and failed with a 404 against every gateway. It is saved again. The ported integration tests caught this.

CLI integration tests moved to the test framework

  • All 35 scenarios from cli/it now run in tests/framework as the ap-cli-gateway runner in the gateway-core block. They cover gateway configuration, apply, REST API, MCP proxy and image build commands.
  • New apcli step package:
    • The shared ap session, moved from aiworkspacecli, which now uses it.
    • Steps to add a gateway to the CLI, run ap, deploy resources from the canonical templates, and assert on the exit status and output.
  • Resources get unique names and are registered for cleanup. Gateway credentials are passed in the environment, never written to the CLI configuration.
  • The old "list when empty" checks now check the scenario's own resources, because other runners share the gateway.
  • Supporting platformgateway helpers:
    • the controller's management and admin URLs;
    • template rendering for the Gateway release under test;
    • the cleanup kind for each resource.
  • A testbench mcp service, and a host form of the service URL step for clients outside the Docker network.

New CLI subscription scenarios

ap-cli-subscription runner, gateway-version>1.2.0, 12 scenarios. Calls through the gateway confirm each change takes effect:

  • create under a caller-supplied ID; read it back with get and list;
  • move between plans (throttled), then clear the plan (no longer throttled);
  • change the token (old token rejected, new one accepted, token never printed);
  • revoke and reactivate;
  • option validation;
  • gateway rejections that leave the subscription unchanged;
  • generic 409s for token and ID conflicts.

Includes a new canonical subscription.yaml template. The CLI deploy step can now create subscriptions and records a rejected deploy for the scenario to assert, instead of failing the step.

Testing

  • ap-cli-gateway, ap-cli-subscription, subscription-management and subscription-plan-management pass on gateway-core with SQLite, Postgres and SQL Server. The ai-workspace-cli block passes with the shared runner.
  • Unit tests pass with -race for all framework step packages, and for the CLI's cmd/gateway and internal packages.
  • The standards checker reports no new issues. The one remaining finding, two unit-test files in testbench/services/mcp, predates this PR.
  • The hidden-prompt path of --rotate-token needs a real terminal, so it was verified by hand. The suite covers its non-interactive behaviour (it fails without changing anything).

Follow-up

cli/it and its nightly job in codecov.yml are now redundant and can be removed in a separate PR.

Allow `ap gateway subscription create` to set spec.externalRefId, and let
`ap gateway subscription update` change the plan (--subscription-plan-id),
remove it (--clear-subscription-plan) and rotate the token (--rotate-token
or --subscription-token). Only the requested fields are sent, and the
gateway's error message is shown when an update is rejected.
The --admin-server value was accepted but never saved to the CLI
configuration, so `ap gateway health` fell back to the management
URL and failed with a 404. Store it on the gateway entry again.
Move the 35 scenarios of the cli/it suite into the integration suite
as the ap-cli-gateway runner of the gateway-core block, covering
gateway configuration, apply, REST API, MCP proxy and image build
commands.

- Add the apcli step package: a shared ap session (moved from
  aiworkspacecli) and parameterized steps to add gateways, run ap,
  apply resources from the canonical templates and assert on the
  exit status and output.
- Deploy resources under unique names and register them for cleanup.
  Gateway credentials are passed in the environment, never written
  to the CLI configuration.
- Replace the "list when empty" checks with checks scoped to the
  scenario's own resources, because other runners share the gateway.
- Add platformgateway helpers for the controller endpoints,
  release-aware template rendering and resource cleanup kinds, a
  testbench "mcp" service, and a "host" form of the service URL step
  for clients outside the block network.
Cover `ap gateway subscription` against a live gateway: create under a
caller-supplied ID, move between plans and clear the plan, change the
token, revoke and reactivate, option validation, gateway rejections
and generic 409 conflicts, confirming each change on the data plane.

Let the CLI deploy step create subscriptions from a new canonical
subscription template, and publish a rejected deployment for the
scenario to assert instead of failing the step.

📝 Walkthrough

Priority: ➖ Normal

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to b77cb

No actionable issue remains identified in the subscription CLI changes or integration-test updates. Merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to b77cb

The new commands reuse existing gateway authorization and validation. The principal introduced risk is optional plaintext token input through command arguments, which can expose credentials on the machine running the CLI. Hidden input provides a safer alternative. Successful token updates still depend on existing synchronization behavior for enforcement.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The newly supported --subscription-token option places the replacement credential in process arguments. A reader permitted to inspect those arguments, shell history or recorded command lines could obtain the token. This is an optional local credential-exposure path, not additional gateway-management authority. The documented warning and hidden-input --rotate-token alternative limit, but do not eliminate, exposure when inline input is chosen.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The command directly changes a selected gateway subscription's status, plan association or token using existing management credentials. The replacement subscription token is data being managed, not the credential authorizing the management request. The inspected SQL write remains gateway-scoped.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported introduced attack path is conditional local credential disclosure: an operator supplies a token inline, a permitted process or command-record observer reads it, and the observer may reuse it within its existing acceptance scope. No actual disclosure or downstream cross-tenant access was verified. Hidden input avoids the argument channel.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both versioned and legacy management route registrations retain authentication and authorization middleware. The CLI's new fields do not replace that middleware chain. Subscription validation remains server-side, including active-plan checks and applicable API-plan enablement checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing transition writes the full mutable subscription row without a version predicate, then publishes a synchronization event. Publication errors are logged without failing the management operation. These mechanisms are unchanged from the full-PR base and are not retained as newly introduced concerns. They limit what CLI success establishes about concurrent updates and immediate enforcement; durable event-failure recovery was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Consider a non-argument token-input mechanism for automation, such as a protected file or dedicated input descriptor, while retaining hidden interactive input. This would reduce reliance on the explicitly discouraged inline option.

A blank --status or --subscription-plan-id was silently omitted from the update, and a blank --subscription-plan-id escaped the conflict check with --clear-subscription-plan. Track whether each flag was supplied and reject blank values, with unit and integration cases for each combination.

…erver fix

Backports the CLI changes from #3820 (cli/ and docs/cli/
only) to ap/0.9.x for the 0.9.2 release:

- `ap gateway subscription create` accepts spec.externalRefId, used as the
  subscription ID.
- `ap gateway subscription update` changes the plan (--subscription-plan-id),
  removes it (--clear-subscription-plan) and rotates the token (--rotate-token
  or --subscription-token). Only the requested fields are sent, and blank or
  conflicting options are rejected.
- `ap gateway add` saves --admin-server again, so `ap gateway health` works.

Also adds the testutil gateway server helper the new unit tests use.
