[Gateway operator] externalRefId and in-place plan/token updates for Subscription CRs - #3918
The gateway management API now supports caller-set subscription IDs and in-place plan and token updates (#3804), and the ap CLI supports them too (#3820). This PR brings the same support to the gateway operator's Subscription CR.
Until now, a deployed Subscription CR could only change spec.status:
Changing spec.subscriptionPlanId or spec.subscriptionToken was rejected as immutable.
Rotating the token's valueFrom Secret failed with "the gateway management API cannot update an existing subscription token".
In every case the only option was to delete and recreate the CR. That left the subscription missing in between, and gave it a new gateway ID.
New optional spec.externalRefId: used as the gateway subscription ID instead of a generated UUID.
Validated in the CRD: 1–64 characters, matching ^[A-Za-z0-9][A-Za-z0-9._-]*$.
Must be unique on the gateway, across all APIs.
Immutable once deployed.
Updated in place:subscriptionPlanId, subscriptionToken and status.
Still immutable:externalRefId, apiId, applicationId, billingCustomerId and billingSubscriptionId.
Regenerated files: deepcopy code, config/crd/bases, and the Helm chart's CRD copy.
Controller
Every reconcile of a deployed CR sends one PUT with the status, the plan and the token. This keeps the CR the source of truth:
Removing subscriptionPlanId sends "subscriptionPlanId": null, which clears the plan on the gateway.
Sending the token on every update applies a rotated valueFrom Secret. The existing Secret drift detection triggers the redeploy.
Immutability check: it now uses a fingerprint of only the immutable fields. The old create-fields annotation (subscription-last-applied-create-fingerprint) also covered the plan and token, so it's removed on the CR's next reconcile, and a new baseline is recorded.
Create conflict recovery:
When a create gets 409 and the CR sets externalRefId, the existing subscription is adopted only if it's listed under the CR's own API.
Otherwise the operator reports a generic, non-retryable conflict, without saying whether the ID or the token collided. That stops a CR from taking over, and overwriting the plan and token of, another API's subscription that uses the same ID.
Without externalRefId, recovery still uses the existing lookup by apiId and applicationId.
Gateway client
SubscriptionCreatePayload and SubscriptionResponse carry externalRefId.
SubscriptionUpdatePayload adds subscriptionPlanId (always sent; nil is an explicit null) and subscriptionToken.
New ListSubscriptions. FindSubscriptionIDByAPIAndApplication now uses it, with the same behaviour as before.
Example
gateway/examples/subscription.yaml documents externalRefId and which fields can change in place.
Compatibility
Existing CRs keep working: they need no changes, and their annotations migrate automatically on the next reconcile.
the update payload, including the explicit null plan;
conflict recovery: adopting an externalRefId subscription on the same API, refusing one on another API with a generic 409, and the fallback when externalRefId is unset or empty;
the existing FindSubscriptionIDByAPIAndApplication and Secret drift tests.
go build, go vet and all operator unit tests pass.
make manifests generate with the pinned controller-gen v0.16.5 produces no further changes, and the Helm chart's CRD copy matches the generated base.

Walkthrough
The subscription API adds an optional external reference ID. The gateway client and controller support subscription listing, conflict recovery, and in-place updates to subscription status, plan, and token.

The v1 and v1alpha1 specs and CRD schemas add optional externalRefId with length and pattern constraints. The schemas and example describe ID selection, immutable fields, and in-place token and plan changes. Deep-copy methods copy the new field.
Gateway client payloads and listing kubernetes/gateway-operator/internal/gatewayclient/subscription_client.go, kubernetes/gateway-operator/internal/gatewayclient/subscription_client_test.go
Create and update payloads support external IDs, plan IDs, and token updates. ListSubscriptions returns parsed subscription results. Application matching trims whitespace and requires exactly one matching result for ID lookup. Tests cover listing, update payload serialization, and matching behavior.
Reconciliation, conflict recovery, and mutable updates kubernetes/gateway-operator/internal/controller/subscription_controller.go, kubernetes/gateway-operator/internal/controller/subscription_controller_test.go
The controller fingerprints immutable fields, recovers subscription IDs after create conflicts, and updates status, plan, and token. Tests cover conflict recovery using external reference IDs, API IDs, and application IDs.

Explanation
The title names the two main changes: the new optional spec.externalRefId field and the in-place plan and token updates for Subscription CRs. It also names the affected component, the gateway operator. The changeset matches this scope: CRD schema and types for v1 and v1alpha1, the controller, conflict recovery, and the gateway client. The title is specific and accurate, although it is long at 85 characters.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the template and covers Purpose, Changes, Compatibility, and Testing. Purpose explains the problem: a deployed Subscription CR could not change its plan or token without being deleted and recreated. It links the related issue and PRs. Changes lists the CRD, controller, and gateway client updates. Compatibility covers existing CRs and the gateway version requirement. Testing lists unit tests, build and vet results, and the generated-file check. The template sections Goals, Approach, User stories, Documentation, Samples, Test environment, and Security checks are missing or not filled in. The description does not say whether the docs were updated, and it does not give code coverage or a test environment. The description does not answer the security checklist, and it does not state whether any secrets are committed.
Resolution
Consider adding the following before merge: a Documentation entry that links product docs or explains why none are needed; the Security checks answers (secure coding standards, FindSecurityBugs, and no secrets committed); the Test environment (Go and Kubernetes versions, OS); and a note on the user stories. The Goals and Approach sections can be brief. Coverage figures are optional because Codecov reports them in the PR comments.

…ation
Conflict recovery returned an API's only subscription whatever its application, so a CR could adopt another application's subscription and overwrite its plan and token. Match normalized application IDs (unset, empty and blank mean no application) and return an ID only when exactly one subscription matches; otherwise the existing retryable conflict path runs. Recovery by externalRefId also requires the CR's application.
