What

  • Startup migrations get 30 minutes per statement. Every other query keeps the connection string's timeout. An index build on a big exchange table no longer fails at Npgsql's default 30 s.
  • ResultSubscriptionAndFailureCount (PgSql) is safe to re-run. Its index is built outside the transaction, so a build that failed left the columns added without the migration recorded, and every later start failed with 42701 column already exists. The columns are now added with IF NOT EXISTS.
  • DropPromotedValuesIndex drops the index only if it exists, so a database where it was dropped by hand migrates instead of crash-looping.
  • Chart: the startup probe allows 40 minutes (480 × 5 s), longer than one migration statement may run, so a migration that runs out logs why instead of the pod being killed.
  • SW-Serverless 10.2.4: logs adapter startup failures.
  • Docs: the Required table in configuration.md gains ASPNETCORE_ENVIRONMENT and SettingsEncryptionKey, followed by a short list of settings that apply only in some cases. The S3-compatible checksum variables are documented, and deployment.md notes the upgrade's short downtime.

Tested

  • A copy of a 2M-row database with Command Timeout=1: develop fails after 1.1 s, and every restart after that fails with 42701. This branch starts on that same stuck database in 8 s, with all 92 migrations applied and the index valid.
  • MigrationDriftTests pass.

Databases that already ran these migrations, such as app-dev, are unaffected.

  • 🔍 Trigger review
📝 Summary
  • Changes: Startup migrations set the EF Core command timeout to 30 minutes. PostgreSQL migration operations tolerate existing columns and a missing index; SQL Server and MySQL migrations also tolerate a missing promoted-values index. The startup probe allows 40 minutes. The PR upgrades SimplyWorks.Serverless packages to 10.2.4 and updates configuration and deployment guidance.
  • Risk: risk:medium. Migration retry behavior and startup timing affect database upgrades and service availability.
  • Security-sensitive areas: Configuration docs cover Token:Key, Bitween:SettingsEncryptionKey, and storage settings. No security-control implementation change is described.
  • Test coverage impact: Adds an integration test for resuming migration when the promoted-values index was manually dropped. The PR description reports MigrationDriftTests pass; no independent test run is available here.
  • Operational concerns: For upgrades, stop all old-version pods before deploying the new version. Startup can wait up to 40 minutes; an individual migration statement can run for up to 30 minutes. Confirm rollback procedures against any migrations already applied.

The pull request makes several database migrations tolerate already-applied schema changes and adds a PostgreSQL integration test for a manually dropped index. Startup migration execution now sets a 30-minute command timeout. The pull request also updates package versions, startup allowances, and configuration and deployment guidance.

Changes: Migration and deployment updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Retry-safe migrations and regression test
SW.Bitween.MsSql/Migrations/*, SW.Bitween.MySql/Migrations/*, SW.Bitween.PgSql/Migrations/*, SW.Bitween.IntegrationTests/Tests/HandDroppedIndexMigrationTests.cs
Migrations conditionally drop promoted-values indexes and add missing PostgreSQL columns. A PostgreSQL integration test drops the index before applying the remaining migrations and checks for pending migrations.
Startup migration and deployment settings
SW.Bitween.Web/Program.cs, SW.Bitween.*/*.csproj, charts/default/values.yaml, docs/deployment.md
Startup uses a local migration helper with a 30-minute database command timeout. Serverless package references are updated. The Helm startup threshold increases to 480 checks, and deployment guidance changes the startup allowance and old-pod upgrade steps.
Configuration guidance
docs/configuration.md
The documentation adds environment, encryption-key, conditional settings, token-key, and S3-compatible storage guidance.

13-17: Review: edit to an already-applied migration is limited to idempotency.

The Up change makes the drop idempotent. The resulting schema is identical on databases that already applied it, and the migration ID is unchanged, so they are unaffected. This is the narrow exception to the "applied migrations are immutable" rule, and it fixes the restart failure. DROP INDEX IF EXISTS ... ON is supported on SQL Server 2016+. No issue.

18-25: Review: retry-safe column adds are correct, with one residual risk.

ADD COLUMN IF NOT EXISTS plus ConcurrentIndex.Create (which drops an invalid leftover index and uses IF NOT EXISTS) makes the migration safe to retry. The column SQL runs in the migration transaction. Because the later index statement uses suppressTransaction: true, EF commits the earlier operations first. This matches the comment.

Residual risk: a pre-existing valid index with the same name but a different definition would be silently kept. That is unlikely here, so no change is required.

Do not use 480 as the generic startup threshold.

The startup probe checks /health/live every 5 seconds and gates liveness until it succeeds. A running process whose health check keeps failing can therefore avoid a liveness restart for 40 minutes, even when no migration is running. Use a migration-specific startup condition or reduce this threshold for ordinary startup failures.

Keeping 480. The startup probe calls /health/live, which runs no checks and answers as soon as Kestrel listens, so it only waits while the startup migrations run, before the host starts. Once it passes, the liveness probe (10 s × 3) takes over, so a running pod that stops answering is still restarted within 30 s. The allowance has to outlast the 30-minute migration command timeout, so a migration that runs out logs its timeout instead of the pod being killed.

Prefix all RabbitMQ management settings with Bitween:.

This bullet omits the prefix from the username and password settings. The Bitween settings table lists them under the Bitween section. Operators following this bullet may configure the credentials at the root, leaving queue health without them. Use Bitween:RabbitMqManagementUsername and Bitween:RabbitMqManagementPassword.

Enable MySqlConnector user variables for this migration.

DropPromotedValuesIndex.Up uses SET @drop = .... The production MySQL context uses Pomelo's MySqlConnector provider, and AllowUserVariables defaults to false. Without AllowUserVariables=true, MySqlConnector can treat @drop as an unset parameter and fail before PREPARE runs. The multi-statement batch itself is allowed by default.

Set AllowUserVariables=true in the MySQL connection-string contract, or rewrite the migration to avoid a user variable. Add a MySQL integration test that uses the production connection settings and starts with the index already absent.

Checked on MySQL 8.0 through Pomelo 9.0.0 with a connection string that doesn't set AllowUserVariables. With the index dropped by hand, all 92 migrations applied, including this one. On a fresh database, where the index exists, it was dropped and all 92 applied. Pomelo sets AllowUserVariables=true on the connections it opens, so @drop works. No change.
