What and why

The security items of phase 1 (#340), plus page ownership (#309). Closes #309. Refs #340.

Request gate (hub and Vite)

  • One gate in src/hub-gate.ts now protects both the Vite plugin and initPangularHub(): it checks the loopback address, then Host (loopback, allowedHosts or an allowed origin's host), then Origin. When Origin is missing, a cross-site Sec-Fetch-Site is refused. Clients that send neither (curl, native apps) still pass.
  • The Express hub's nodeMiddleware, handleUpgrade, handler, attach(server) and the server option all go through the gate. A new allowLan option (needs auth on) lets other machines in, and allowedOrigins: false turns the gate off.
  • New enabled option, defaulting to NODE_ENV !== 'production'. When off, the hub mounts nothing; forcing it on in production prints a warning. The demo src/server.ts mounts the hub only when it is enabled.
  • The one-time code and the MCP token are on by default, the Vite hub included. The token is written to ~/.pangular-inspector/mcp-token with mode 0600 (or PANGULAR_MCP_TOKEN_FILE), reused across restarts, and only its path is printed.

Agent tool safety tiers

  • Three tiers (read, action, destructive) set in one place, AGENT_SAFETY in config.ts, and sent to MCP clients as read-only and destructive hints.
  • agent.readOnly keeps only read tools. change-detection stays as a read tool without record under readOnly.
  • highlight is read; record-pipes and recording change detection are action; clear-recordings and analog-call-api are destructive.
  • ACTION_TOOLS.router lists navigate; an explicit free-modes map keeps the documented instrument and resolve-lazy exception.

Page ownership (#309)

  • One ownership helper on top of trackPageSessions, used by every inspector's push, ping and forget handlers. A reloaded page takes over its pageId at once with a per-page secret kept in sessionStorage (in memory for the native overlays); otherwise a new session takes over only when the old one has closed or gone quiet past the page expiry.
  • Answers to panel and agent requests (router, forms, NgRx, component pick, signal peek) are taken only from the connection that owns the page.
  • dispatch-ngrx-action without page now refuses when more than one page has a Store and lists them. Form writes already carry a page-scoped form id.

Extension and Analog

  • The <all_urls> content scripts, including the MAIN-world one, are gone; the extension injects on demand. The panel iframe has a title.
  • analog-call-api is limited to API routes, /_analog and page URLs, so it can't fetch /@fs/… or ?raw.

Breaking changes (documented with their opt-outs)

  • Local Vite now asks for the one-time code and the MCP token. auth: false turns both off.
  • An Express hub reached from another machine (for example a phone over Wi-Fi) needs allowLan: true.
  • The hub is off in production unless enabled: true.

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck
  • pnpm test:devtools (2,000+ tests, new gate, token, tier and ownership tests) and pnpm test:panel
  • Docs updated (security, Vite, Express, other servers, configuration, CLI, agent tools, MCP server, Chrome extension, Capacitor guide) and pnpm docs:build passes
  • pnpm extension:build leaves extension/ui unchanged

Notes for reviewers

  • A code review ran on the combined branch; its five findings were checked and fixed (the gate now covers attach(server) and the server option, answers are owner-checked, and the other-servers page is updated).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Angular detection now runs directly in the inspected tab while Chrome DevTools is open; the extension no longer uses content scripts and does not run detection while DevTools is closed.
    • Agent tools have read, action, and destructive safety tiers. Read-only mode keeps read tools and supported read-only variants.
    • MCP tokens persist in a permission-restricted file across restarts. Environment variables can provide a token or select its file.
    • Connected pages use ownership checks to protect reports and support ownership transfer on reconnect.
  • Security
    • Hub requests are checked against host and origin rules; authentication is on by default, and LAN access requires explicit configuration.
    • The hub is disabled by default in production. Project-file and development-server-internal API requests are refused.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup, configuration, security, and troubleshooting guidance.

The Vite plugin and the Express hub checked requests in different ways,
so a cross-site page or a rebinding host could reach the hub. Add one
request gate in hub-gate.ts for both: it checks the loopback address,
then Host, then Origin, and refuses a cross-site Sec-Fetch-Site when
Origin is missing. Requests with neither header still pass, so curl and
native apps keep working.

Keep the Express hub off in production unless it is forced on, and warn
when it is. Turn the one-time code and the MCP token on by default, and
write the token to a file only the user can read instead of printing it.
Local Vite now asks for the code and token (auth: false turns both off),
and Express hubs reached over the LAN need allowLan: true. The security,
Vite, Express, MCP server and Capacitor pages describe the new defaults
and their opt-outs.

Refs #340
…dOnly

agent.readOnly kept some tools that change the page, such as highlight
and record-pipes, and MCP clients got no hint about which tools write.
Set one tier per tool (read, action or destructive) in AGENT_SAFETY in
config.ts. Devframe sends the tiers to MCP clients as readOnlyHint and
destructiveHint, and agent.readOnly now keeps only read tools.
change-detection stays available as a read tool without its record
option.

List navigate under ACTION_TOOLS.router, and keep the documented
exception for instrument and resolve-lazy in an explicit free-modes map.
The MCP server, tools, CLI and configuration pages describe the tiers.

Refs #340
Any connection could push to, ping or forget a pageId it did not own,
so one tab or app could overwrite or drop another one's data. Route the
push, ping and forget handlers of every inspector through one owner
helper in page-owners.ts. A reloaded page or a native app that
reconnects gets its own pageId back at once with its secret, or once
the old connection has closed or gone quiet.

Refuse NgRx writes without a page when they would go to every tab or to
one the caller did not choose, and list the pages in the answer. Form
actions were already scoped to one page by the form id. The tools and
security pages and the coding standards describe the ownership rules.

Refs #340
Refs #309
…all-api

The extension injected content scripts into <all_urls> and ran a
background worker only to detect Angular, which gave it access to every
site. Remove both and detect Angular through
chrome.devtools.inspectedWindow.eval, which needs no extra permission.
Give the panel iframe a title so screen readers can name it.

analog-call-api could fetch any URL on the dev server, including Vite
file requests. Accept only API routes, /_analog URLs and app pages, and
refuse /@fs, ?raw, project files and dot segments. The extension,
Analog, tools and security pages and the privacy policy describe the
change.

Refs #340
devtools.attach(server) and the server option added the hub's own
upgrade listener, so WebSocket upgrades on those servers skipped the
loopback address and Host checks. A client on another machine that sent
no Origin passed, with only the one-time code left. Wrap the listeners
the hub adds in the same gate as handleUpgrade, for hub paths only, and
route the server option through the gated attach.

The Hono, h3 and Fastify page now says what each handler checks, that
handler sees no peer address, how the hub behaves in production and
what a 403 means.

Refs #340
The result handlers for router, form, NgRx, component pick and signal
peek requests settled a pending request for any connection that sent
its requestId. Requests are broadcast to every client, so another tab
or a stray client could answer for the page an agent asked. Keep the
target pageId with each pending request and settle it only when the
answer names that page and comes from the connection that owns it.

The security page described every write without page as refused while
more than one page could take it. Only dispatch-ngrx-action does that.
Say so, and that navigate and other tools pick a page.

The readOnly commit on this branch says readOnly kept highlight. It did
not: highlight was an action tool and readOnly dropped it. This branch
makes highlight a read tool, so readOnly now keeps it, and drops
record-pipes and the record argument of change-detection.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The changes update agent-tool safety and page selection, add hub request checks and persistent MCP token files, add RPC page ownership, and move Angular detection into DevTools. Documentation and tests cover these changes.

Changes

Agent tool safety and page selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Safety tiers and read-only behavior
packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/*, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/cli.md, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/configuration.md, apps/docs/src/content/contributing/development.md, AGENTS.md, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/config.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub.test.ts
Tool registration derives safety tiers from configuration. Read-only mode filters non-read tools and exposes the read-only change-detection variant.
Page selection and Analog API calls
packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/pages.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/analog-register.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/ngrx-mcp.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/analog-call-api-paths.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/tools.md, apps/docs/src/content/inspectors/analog.md
NgRx requests without a page require a unique eligible page. Analog API calls refuse disallowed paths before sending requests.

Hub access and MCP tokens

Layer / File(s) Summary
Request gate and hub lifecycle
packages/devtools/src/hub-gate.ts, packages/devtools/src/hub.ts, packages/devtools/src/vite.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub-gate.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub-express-gate.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/vite-auth.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/vite-lan.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/vite-mcp-auth.test.ts, src/server.ts, packages/devtools/vitest.config.ts
Hub requests and upgrades use host, origin, fetch-site, and remote-access checks. The hub supports LAN and production enablement options. Vite authentication defaults to enabled, and Express mounts middleware only when the hub is enabled.
Persistent MCP token storage
packages/devtools/src/mcp-token.ts, packages/devtools/src/hub.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/hub.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/test-env.ts, apps/docs/src/content/agents/mcp-server.md
MCP tokens use an environment override or a persistent file with restricted permissions. Logs identify the file path without printing the token.
Hub integrations and access guidance
apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/express.md, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/other-servers.md, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/vite.md, apps/docs/src/content/guides/capacitor.md, apps/docs/src/content/security.md
The guides describe request checks, authentication defaults, LAN access, production behavior, and refused requests.

Page ownership and RPC reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Ownership tracking and page claims
packages/devtools/src/rpc/page-owners.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/page-sessions.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/pages.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/page-owners.test.ts, docs/contributing/coding-standards.md, apps/docs/src/content/security.md
Page claims bind a page ID and key to an RPC session. Ownership tracking handles matching claims, disconnected owners, and expiry.
Overlay page-key lifecycle
packages/devtools/src/page-id.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay-angular-native.ts, packages/devtools/src/overlay-nativescript.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/overlay-page-key.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/overlay-angular-native.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/overlay-nativescript-session.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/pipes-pages.test.ts
Browser and native overlays create or retain page keys and claim pages before reporting. Reconnection tests check key reuse.
Ownership enforcement across reports and results
packages/devtools/src/devframe.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/analog-register.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/page-owners.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/component-agent.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/forms-mcp.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/router-mcp.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/ngrx-mcp.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/untrusted-notice.test.ts
Page reports, pings, removals, and page-directed results now check ownership. Pending actions retain their target page ID, and results must come from that page’s owner.

DevTools-only Angular detection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Direct inspected-page detection
extension/devtools.js, extension/manifest.json, extension/background.js, extension/content-script.js, extension/detect-angular.js, extension/panel.html, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/extension-devtools.test.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/extension-manifest.test.ts, apps/docs/src/content/contributing/chrome-extension.md, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/chrome-extension.md, apps/docs/src/content/security.md, docs/privacy-policy.html
The extension checks the inspected page from DevTools and no longer declares content scripts or a background worker. Tests and documentation cover detection and extension access.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 19095

The change is mergeable after normal checks. Concurrent repair of an invalid token file remains a narrow edge case.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 19095

The changes strengthen default access controls. However, concurrent credential repair or a persistence failure can leave a running hub using a token that differs from the stored token, disrupting authenticated access and recovery. Default exposure is local, with LAN access opt-in. Remaining platform and integration uncertainty prevents a minimal assessment.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new persistent credential lifecycle can diverge from active hub authorization. Two processes repairing an invalid token file can each return and cache a different token while only the last replacement remains on disk. Persistence failures also permit startup with a non-durable token. Clients following the documented token-file contract can then fail authentication until configuration or process state is repaired. Ordinary initial creation and valid-file reuse avoid this divergence; no authentication bypass is established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Default credential scope is the operating-system user's home-folder token, not an individual project. Hubs using that file share bearer authority, so compromise of that credential can affect multiple reachable hubs using it. Explicit authorization or environment configuration can select different credentials; readOnly and action configuration bound the tools exposed by each hub.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The credential-recovery mismatch establishes an authenticated-access and recovery failure path, not a demonstrated authentication bypass. File corruption or persistence failure is a precondition; no inspected network request writes the token file. Request tests assert that missing or wrong bearer values are rejected and the selected credential is accepted.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The shared gate evaluates fetch metadata, peer locality, Host, and Origin before wrapped hub handlers and upgrades. Native clients without browser metadata may pass these checks, making authentication independently necessary. allowedOrigins:false explicitly removes the gate. LAN access is coupled to authentication; Vite additionally requires configured network origins. The Fetch adapter has no peer address and substitutes a local address, so it cannot independently prove network locality.
  • observed — Page identity is connection-bound while an owner is live. A matching page key enables immediate reconnect takeover, and later writes from the old connection are rejected. Disconnect or expiry permits takeover without the previous key; calls lacking RPC session identity are treated as trusted in-process calls. This is page-report ownership, not tenant isolation or a replacement for hub authentication.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Tool safety is centrally derived during registration rather than accepted from individual tool metadata. readOnly filtering enforces the tier policy, while configured action exceptions explicitly retain only documented navigate modes. This centralization reduces drift between advertised safety and tool exposure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize invalid-file repair across processes so every successful initializer returns the durable winning credential. Make persistence-failure behavior explicit rather than silently retaining an inaccessible ephemeral credential, and validate concurrent repair and interrupted persistence. Separate token configuration can provide per-project authority where the shared-user default is unsuitable.
