CI on main fails since the runner got setup-php builds of PHP 7.4-8.1 from 2026-10-24: after 'Allowed memory size exhausted' they exit with 1 and skip shutdown functions, even php -n without the library. PHP 8.2+ and the official php:7.4-cli image exit with 255 as before (make php74-test passes).

  • testFatalError checks bare PHP first and is skipped, with the reason, on such a build (CI: skipped on 7.4-8.1, runs on 8.2+)
  • the exit code assertions print the output of the script

… running out of memory

setup-php builds of PHP 7.4-8.1 from October 2026 exit with code 1 after
'Allowed memory size exhausted' and skip shutdown functions, with no
extensions and no library loaded (php -n). The official PHP 7.4 image
and PHP 8.2+ still exit with 255 and run them, so the test checks bare
PHP first and is skipped, with the reason, where PHP itself is broken.
