processor_fts: Fluent Typed Scripting

FTS is a new processor for writing telemetry policies in Lua with typed
access to logs, metrics and traces
. Policies read and edit records the way
the data actually is: 64-bit integers stay exact, binary stays binary,
timestamps keep nanoseconds, and OpenTelemetry resources, scopes and
attributes are first-class properties instead of raw metadata maps.

pipeline:
  inputs:
    - name: opentelemetry
      port: 4318
      processors:
        logs:
          - name: fts
            script: policy.lua
local fb = require("fluentbit")

function process(log)
    if log.body:get_string("path") == "/health" then
        return fb.DROP
    end

    fb.redact(log.body, {"authorization", "password", "access_token"})

    if fb.is_otel(log) then
        log.resource.attributes:set("deployment.environment.name", "production")
    end
end

Highlights

  • One model for three signals: process(log), process(metric) (per
    family) and process(span) share the same typed value API.
  • Transactional edits: each item commits or rolls back as a unit, including
    its resource and scope. error_mode decides between dropping and keeping the
    original on policy errors.
  • OpenTelemetry aware: per-record resource/scope edits, severity and trace
    context helpers, metric helpers (scale_metric, aggregate_metric,
    merge_histogram_buckets, copy_metric, extract_metric).
  • Bounded by design: per-callback instruction budget, policy memory limit,
    output size limit, restricted sandbox (no I/O, FFI, debug, loaders).
  • Fast: 18–45% less CPU than the equivalent lua processor on 5.1, see
    below.

The API reference is in plugins/processor_fts/README.md.

Performance

Release builds on the same machine, user+sys CPU and peak RSS (median). The
same policy runs as a lua processor on 5.1.0, as a lua processor on this
branch, and as an fts processor on this branch. Input is tail with 1M flat
records or 300k Kubernetes records, output is null.

Scenario lua 5.1 lua this branch fts fts vs lua 5.1 RSS lua 5.1 RSS fts
No-op policy 3.13 s 2.81 s 2.20 s −30% 22.4 MB 24.7 MB

flush is 0.2 s. With flush 0.02 (smaller chunks) the CPU results are the
same within 2%, and peak RSS is within 1.5 MB of the lua processor in every
input scenario. As an output processor, FTS uses 52 MB against 67 MB for
lua.

How:

  • FTS works on the same decoded chunk as every other native processor, so
    chains decode and encode each chunk once.
  • Policies edit chunk values in place under an undo log instead of copying
    records.
  • When FTS is the last processor, records are decoded into a per-chunk arena
    that borrows strings from the chunk buffer, and edits are allocated from the
    same arena.
  • Large buffers, such as complete chunks reaching output processors, are
    processed in windows (see below), so memory stays bounded.

Windowed log processing

Native processors decode the whole buffer before running, so an output
processor held every record of a stored chunk (several MB) decoded at once.
When all native processors of a run set the new
FLB_PROCESSOR_FLAG_LOG_WINDOWS flag, buffers larger than 64 KiB are
decoded, processed and encoded in windows of about 64 KiB or 1024 records.

  • Windows never split a group (for example one OpenTelemetry resource and
    scope), and an end marker always stays with its group.
  • Malformed buffers fall back to the single-chunk path.
  • fts and content_modifier set the flag. Other processors, filters used
    as processors and Lua processors keep the single-chunk path.
  • For FTS logs, a batch is one window, so output_limit and error_mode
    apply per window instead of per chunk. This is documented in the README.

Changes outside the plugin

FTS needed a few shared changes. Each one is a separate commit.

  • lib: cfl: arena objects use their natural alignment instead of the
    long double alignment, owned strings use finer size classes, and large
    arena strings are now aligned. Decoded record batches use about 25–30% less
    arena memory and about 20% less CPU. No public API change. This is the same
    patch as arena: pack objects, refine string size classes and align external allocations cfl#98.
  • processor:
    • logical record counts are carried through the chain to avoid recounting;
    • a failed chunk encode resets the encoder so records cannot leak into the
      next chunk;
    • windowed processing (above);
    • each run owns its chunk decoder and encoder. Before, the decoded chunk
      borrowed the first processor's decoder while later processors only held
      their own locks, and with output workers another thread could reset that
      decoder while records were still being read.
  • mp:
    • chunk record pooling, an optional per-chunk value arena and an
      allocation-free log record counter;
    • group-aligned log windows and appending chunk encoding;
    • group normalization can keep a leading end marker and an open trailing
      group. The existing functions keep their strict behaviour.
  • processor, output: a group whose start and end markers arrive in
    separate appends (for example split forward messages) keeps its markers
    through native processors, and through output processors when the stored
    chunk had them. The markers are kept only when the processor input already
    had them, so a processor that drops an end marker from a balanced input
    still loses the orphan start, as before.
  • output: processed profiles are exposed with their serialized size
    instead of the buffer capacity, as already done for traces.
  • log_event_decoder: reuse the unpack zone between records.
  • input_log: pass exact record counts to processors.
  • out_opentelemetry (fixes that also apply to 5.1):
    • a chunk ending with a group start and no records yet, for example a
      group whose records arrive in a later append, lost all its earlier
      records while the flush reported success. FTS made this common, because
      a policy that edits a resource reopens the source group at the end of the
      append;
    • with a small batch_size, records of earlier scopes in the same request
      were sent again with the next batch.
  • opentelemetry / out_opentelemetry: preserve typed OTLP fields (bytes,
    event name, dropped counts, flags) through Fluent Bit. OTLP JSON metrics keep
    the 5.1 behaviour of merging repeated series by labels (last value wins).
  • lib: cmetrics:
    • typed OTLP metric metadata (typed attributes, flags, exemplars, start
      times) is kept through the internal MessagePack format as an optional
      sidecar;
    • the same point metadata is also written to the external otlp tree that
      5.1 reads, so 5.1 nodes keep start times, flags and exemplars;
    • histogram buckets stay cumulative on the wire, unknown layout markers are
      ignored, and repeated label-less points keep the last value, as in 5.1;
    • typed attributes with no OTLP form (null, unsigned above INT64_MAX) fall
      back to the label attributes instead of dropping the metric.
  • lib: ctraces: OTLP decoders keep spans with an unknown span kind
    instead of rejecting them. MessagePack stores those kinds as unspecified,
    because 5.1 rejects the whole traces context otherwise.
  • processor_labels, processor_opentelemetry_envelope: list-handling and
    metadata ownership fixes found while testing FTS chains.

The bundled library changes are kept in their own commits so they can be sent
upstream.

Compatibility

  • New plugin, enabled with FLB_PROCESSOR_FTS (requires LuaJIT and yyjson).
  • The lua filter and processor are unchanged.
  • Internal MessagePack metrics stay readable by 5.1 and vice versa,
    including filesystem backlog written by 5.1, verified with 5.1.0 and 5.1.4
    release binaries in both directions. Traces were verified the same way with
    5.1.4. 5.1.0 already rejects traces written by master, because of the span
    flags field, which predates this PR.
  • OTLP output changes, all closer to the OTLP input:
    • log event_name, dropped attribute counts and flags are forwarded;
    • OTLP JSON output writes flags and eventName, and bytesValue as
      base64;
    • typed metric and span attributes are forwarded as received instead of
      being converted through labels;
    • invalid attributes are skipped with a warning instead of failing the
      whole payload.
  • An OTLP histogram forwarded from this version to a 5.1 node and exported
    by that node's opentelemetry output shows cumulative bucket counts,
    because 5.1 emits its stored buckets unchanged. 5.1's Prometheus outputs are
    correct.
  • Span kinds outside the OTLP range survive OTLP to OTLP, but become
    unspecified when stored in a chunk.
  • Group markers that span appends were previously removed by any native
    processor and now stay, as they do for pipelines without processors.
  • Struct additions in public headers are appended at the end.

Testing

Linux x86_64, debug build with -DFLB_TESTS_RUNTIME=On -DFLB_TESTS_INTERNAL=On.

  • Internal tests: 100/100 passed (ctest --test-dir build -j8).
  • Valgrind (--leak-check=full), clean: flb-it-fts, flb-it-processor,
    flb-it-mp, flb-it-mp_chunk_cobj, flb-it-log_event_decoder,
    flb-it-opentelemetry.
  • AddressSanitizer with clang 18 and gcc 9: flb-it-fts, flb-it-mp,
    flb-it-processor, flb-it-opentelemetry pass.
  • Every commit in the series builds, and the mp, processor and fts internal
    tests pass at each step, except one: flb-it-mp does not build at the
    scanner API commit until the following test commit. The two are separate
    because of the commit prefix rules.
  • cmetrics standalone unit tests: 23/23 passed. ctraces: 7/7 passed. Both are
    clean under Valgrind.

  • normal: 1126 passed, 137 skipped
  • VALGRIND=1 VALGRIND_STRICT=1: 1126 passed, 137 skipped. 623 Fluent Bit
    runs, no Valgrind errors and no definite leaks.

The complete tests/integration suite was also run. The only failures are
unrelated to this change:

  • out_kafka schema registry tests: this build has FLB_PROTOBUF_ENCODER
    off;
  • unix_socket_decode_status: this build has FLB_IN_UNIX_SOCKET off;
  • in_node_exporter_metrics systemd tests: they fail the same way with a
    master build on this machine.

Soak harness (OTLP logs, metrics and traces plus forward logs with groups
split across messages, FTS on input and output, two output workers, restarts
every minute, 2% of exports rejected with 503): no missing records in any
signal, no duplicates, flat memory. A one hour run (2.9M items, a restart every
10 minutes, 1% of exports rejected) also lost and duplicated nothing, with peak
RSS between 24 and 26 MB. The run that found the
out_opentelemetry loss above now passes, and new integration tests cover
both fixes. They fail on 5.1.0.

Cross-version checks with 5.1.0 and 5.1.4 release binaries:

  • histogram buckets through forward 5.1→new, new→5.1 and new→new;
  • metrics start times and flags new→5.1.0→new and new→5.1.4→new;
  • traces new→5.1.4→new;
  • the 5.1.0 MessagePack fixtures.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 943f7

The changes reviewed here look safe. Three earlier minor concerns remain open and are worth resolving or consciously accepting: a possible allocator mismatch when protobuf messages are freed on a failure path, windowed log processing that can keep more than one stray group-end marker, and OpenTelemetry log batches that can exceed the configured batch size.

P1 Badge Split the change into interface-scoped commits

This public CMetrics addition is part of a single commit that also changes CTraces wire handling, core MessagePack and processor behavior, multiple OTLP paths, the FTS plugin, documentation, and tests. The repository explicitly disallows bundling different interfaces merely because they support the same feature; keeping these changes together also prevents the separately maintained CMetrics and CTraces patches from being reviewed or sent upstream independently. Split the bundled libraries and distinct core/plugin interfaces into scoped commits before merging.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply the same size fix to the profiles path.

The trace path now passes serialization_buffer_offset as the chunk size. The profiles path has the same defect and still passes p_size. p_size starts at evc->size and only grows. If the processed profiles serialize to fewer bytes than the input, the event chunk includes trailing zero bytes from the flb_calloc buffer. Output plugins then decode those zero bytes as extra msgpack data.

Review the public CMetrics layout change for ABI compatibility.

struct cmt_metric is embedded by value in the public struct cmt_map. Adding otlp_metadata increases the embedded object size and moves every later struct cmt_map field. A separately compiled consumer using the previous headers can therefore read incorrect fields.

Confirm the supported ABI boundary before merging. If binary compatibility is required, store the metadata outside the embedded public structures, such as in a side table keyed by the sample. The memcpy in processor_labels uses the current header and does not establish compatibility with older consumers.

Preserve the public struct cmt_metric layout because it is embedded by value in
struct cmt_map; if binary compatibility is required, move otlp_metadata to
storage outside these public structures, such as a side table keyed by the
sample, and update its access paths without relying on processor_labels memcpy
for compatibility.

Use the staged-message allocator during protobuf-c cleanup.

When embedded jemalloc is enabled, fts_proto.c can allocate through mangled jemalloc symbols. Protobuf-c's default allocator uses system malloc and free. The failure path can therefore release the message and all nested allocations with a different allocator. Changing only entry->key does not fix this path.

Review comment at @plugins/processor_fts/fts_proto.c at line 469:
Update the protobuf-c cleanup path in `fts_proto.c` to use the staged-message
allocator: construct a `ProtobufCAllocator` using `fts_proto_alloc`,
`fts_proto_free`, and the existing `budget`, then pass it to
`protobuf_c_message_free_unpacked` instead of `NULL`. Ensure cleanup releases
the message and nested allocations through the same allocator used for their
allocation.

Preserve the record-start offset for partial records.

When template_execute() reaches _out for an incomplete record, it sets noff to the end of the available input. msgpack_unpack() copies that value to context->offset before returning MSGPACK_UNPACK_CONTINUE.

The processor callers then treat the incomplete record as clean end-of-input when the offset equals the buffer size. Restore previous_offset before returning the insufficient-data result.

This behavior also existed with msgpack_unpack_next(), so it is not a regression caused by the API replacement.

In the unpacking flow, restore the record-start offset when msgpack_unpack

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Windowed runs can keep more than one leading end marker.

In the single-chunk path, FLB_MP_GROUPS_KEEP_LEADING_END keeps only the first end marker that comes before any start in the whole buffer. In run_log_windows, every window gets this flag until seen_start becomes true. Each window is normalized independently, so each window keeps its own first stray end.

Example input: r0 E <1024+ records> E r1, with no group start. The single-chunk path outputs one E. The windowed path outputs two E markers, so its bytes differ from the single-chunk output. The test processor_log_windows_match_single_chunk asserts that both paths produce the same bytes, but its fixture does not contain this case. Downstream, the second E is forwarded as a group end for the next append.

Fix: stop passing the leading-end flag after the first window that received it.

Review comment at @src/flb_processor.c around lines 1588 - 1603:
Update run_log_windows to pass FLB_MP_GROUPS_KEEP_LEADING_END to at most the
first eligible window, tracking whether a window received the flag with a local
state variable. Preserve the existing seen_start behavior and trailing-open flag
handling.
