Every run now attaches a Markdown summary to the job summary page, no configuration required. Requests the `markdown` reporter (Doc Detective 4.2x+) alongside the existing terminal/json reporters, then reads its output file directly — its path is fully predictable from the --output path this action already controls (Doc Detective's reportOutputDir resolves a fixed-filename reporter's directory from --output when it names a file), so no stdout scraping or path validation is needed. Older Doc Detective versions or v2 simply don't produce the file; the attach step is a no-op (fs.existsSync guard) rather than a warning. Supersedes #76, which derived a summary from the JSON results by hand instead of using Doc Detective's own (now available) reporter for it — most of that PR's complexity and review churn came from work this approach doesn't need at all. Pull request overview
This PR updates the GitHub Action to surface Doc Detective’s own Markdown reporter output directly in the GitHub Actions job summary, without requiring user configuration. It does so by requesting the markdown reporter (when supported) and then best-effort attaching the generated doc-detective-summary.md content to core.summary.
Changes:
- For non-v2 Doc Detective runs, add
--reporters terminal json markdownto request the built-in Markdown reporter output. - Compute a stable runner temp root and use it to both write the JSON output and locate the expected Markdown summary file.
- If the Markdown summary exists, append it to the GitHub Actions job summary; failures are warnings only.
- Document the always-on job-summary behavior in the README.

- Use a fresh mkdtempSync subdirectory for --output and the markdown summary instead of a fixed filename directly under RUNNER_TEMP, which is shared by every step in the job. A workflow invoking this action more than once in one job could otherwise read back a file an earlier invocation left behind — e.g. attaching a stale prior summary when a later invocation's Doc Detective version doesn't produce one of its own. - Format the summary-attachment catch's error with an instanceof Error guard instead of a bare (error as Error).message cast, so a thrown non-Error doesn't log the literal string "undefined". - Reword the README to not promise the summary on every run — it needs Doc Detective 4.2x+ and doesn't apply to version: 2.x. compiledCommand is a single string @actions/exec tokenizes into argv itself (no shell involved), so an unquoted value containing a space — a plausible self-hosted-runner working directory or RUNNER_TEMP path — would split into more than one argument instead of one. - The README notes the job summary attachment and version constraints, but it doesn’t mention an important behavior change: the action now passes
--reporters terminal json markdown, which (per Doc Detective CLI semantics) replaces/overrides anyreporterslist from a user-provided config file. Also,4.2x+is a bit ambiguous; consider spelling this out as the v4.2x (4.20+) series to reduce confusion.
The action also attaches a Markdown summary (Doc Detective's own `markdown` reporter output) to the job summary page — no configuration required. This needs Doc Detective 4.2x+ and doesn't apply to `version: 2.x`.
…veat - "4.2x+" was ambiguous; spell out the Doc Detective 4.20+ series. - Document that requesting the markdown reporter via --reporters terminal json markdown overrides rather than merges with a reporters list set in a user's own Doc Detective config file. Doc Detective's markdownReporter caps doc-detective-summary.md at exactly GitHub's 1 MiB per-step job summary limit, and its output already ends in exactly one newline in both the normal and the truncated-for-size case. addEOL() appended a redundant byte on top of that, which could push an at-the-cap summary over the 1 MiB limit and fail core.summary.write() entirely, silently dropping the summary. - The new quoting (
--config "${config}"/--input "${input}") can break Windows-style paths that end with a backslash (e.g.C:\temp\), because@actions/execparses backslashes inside quotes as escape characters and an odd number of trailing\escapes the closing quote. Consider either switching toexec('npx', args)(preferred) or at least normalizing quoted args so they never end with an odd count of trailing backslashes.
if (config) compiledCommand += ` --config "${config}"`;
if (input) compiledCommand += ` --input "${input}"`;
src/index.ts:204
runDiris created under RUNNER_TEMP for every invocation but never cleaned up. On self-hosted runners (or long jobs), these directories can accumulate and waste disk. Since all required files are read immediately, consider best-effort cleanup in afinallyblock after the summary attachment attempt.
try {
const summaryPath = path.join(runDir, "doc-detective-summary.md");
if (fs.existsSync(summaryPath)) {
// No .addEOL(): the markdown reporter already ends its output in
// exactly one newline (both the normal and the 1-MiB-truncated
…nDir
- Replace the string-concatenated compiledCommand (with manual quoting
added last round) with an argv array passed directly to exec("npx",
ddArgs, options). @actions/exec's own string tokenizer treats a
backslash before a closing quote as an escape, so a quoted
self-hosted-runner path ending in a backslash (a plausible Windows
path like C:\temp\) would have consumed the closing quote instead of
terminating the argument — an array sidesteps quoting/escaping
entirely, since each element is already one argument.
- Remove the per-invocation mkdtempSync run directory in a best-effort
finally after the summary-attachment step. RUNNER_TEMP is ephemeral on
GitHub-hosted runners, but a self-hosted runner may persist it across
jobs, where a leftover directory on every run would accumulate.

versioncan be an empty string to mean “use whatever doc-detective is already resolvable” (see the comment above whereddis derived). In that case this branch currently treats it as non-v2 and always passes--reporters ..., which may break a locally-resolved v2 that doesn’t support the flag. Consider only adding--reporterswhen the user explicitly provided a non-v2 version string, so the empty-version (local) mode remains compatible.
const ddArgs: string[] = [dd];
// If v2, add the 'runTests' command
if (version.startsWith("2")) {
ddArgs.push("runTests");
} else {
// Request the markdown reporter (4.2x+) alongside the reporters Doc
// Detective runs by default, so it writes a run summary we can attach
// to the job summary page below. `--reporters` replaces Doc Detective's
// default list rather than adding to it, so terminal/json are named
// explicitly to keep existing console output and `--output` writing.
// An older Doc Detective without a markdown reporter just logs an
// "unknown reporter" line and continues; a config file that already
// sets its own `reporters` list is overridden by this flag.
ddArgs.push("--reporters", "terminal", "json", "markdown");
}
src/index.ts:166
runDircleanup currently only happens in thefinallyof the markdown-summary attachment block, which is reached afterloadResults(...)andsetOutput(...). Ifexec(...)orloadResults(...)throws, the action exits via the outer catch and the per-invocation temp directory will be left behind on self-hosted runners (the scenario this cleanup is meant to prevent). Consider moving thermSync(runDir, ...)into a broaderfinallythat wraps the entire Doc Detective invocation + result loading, so it runs on all exit paths.
const runnerTempRoot = path.resolve(process.env.RUNNER_TEMP || os.tmpdir());
const runDir = fs.mkdtempSync(path.join(runnerTempRoot, "doc-detective-"));
const outputPath = path.join(runDir, "doc-detective-output.json");
ddArgs.push("--output", outputPath);
README.md:23
- The README sentence says “To request it, the action passes …”, but this feature is not user-requested/configurable (it always runs). Rephrasing avoids implying there’s a user-facing knob.
The action also attaches a Markdown summary (Doc Detective's own `markdown` reporter output) to the job summary page — no configuration required. This needs the Doc Detective 4.20+ series and doesn't apply to `version: 2.x`. To request it, the action passes `--reporters terminal json markdown`, which overrides (not merges with) a `reporters` list set in your own Doc Detective config file.
version can be an empty string to mean "use whatever Doc Detective is
already resolvable locally" (npm link, dogfooding this repo's own
unreleased build). That could itself be a v2 build, which doesn't
understand --reporters, and version.startsWith("2") can't distinguish
"empty, unknown" from "explicitly non-v2" — so --reporters was always
added for an empty version, risking a broken invocation against a local
v2 build.
Only add --reporters when version is a non-empty, explicitly non-v2
string. An empty version now just misses the new markdown summary
(a graceful degrade, matching the existing fs.existsSync no-op for an
older/incompatible Doc Detective) rather than risking a broken run.
This is a narrow, defensive precaution, not a fix for detecting the true
resolved version for an empty input -- see the prior, declined "heavy
lift" discussion for that broader (and pre-existing) gap.

runDiris only cleaned up in the job-summary attachmentfinallyblock. Ifexec("npx", ...)fails orloadResults(...)throws before reaching that block, the per-invocation temp directory can be left behind on self-hosted runners and accumulate across jobs. Consider cleaning uprunDiron those early failures as well (best-effort), then rethrow so the action still fails normally.
await exec("npx", ddArgs, options);
// Read results from the file we passed via `--output`, not from stdout.
// Doc Detective's log text is human-facing and free to change (e.g. extra
// "See per-run ..." lines), and scraping the path back out of it coupled
README.md:23
- The README says the Markdown summary is attached “no configuration required”, but the implementation only forces
--reporters ... markdownwhen theversioninput is a non-empty, non-v2 string. If a user setsversion: ""to run a locally-resolved Doc Detective build, the summary likely won’t be produced/attached, so it would be good to document that exception explicitly.
…hment Wrap the exec/loadResults/summary-attachment section in an outer try/finally instead of attaching cleanup only to the summary-attachment try/catch's finally. A failed exec() or a throwing loadResults() (before reaching the summary block) previously skipped cleanup entirely, leaving the per-invocation directory behind. The outer finally now covers every exit path; genuine errors still propagate to main()'s own try/catch (core.setFailed) same as before, since this only wraps with try/finally, not try/catch. Also document in the README that an unset/empty version (a locally resolvable Doc Detective build) is excluded from the "no configuration required" summary attachment, alongside the existing v2/4.20+ caveats. version.startsWith("2")will also treat versions like20.0.0(or any tag starting with "2") as Doc Detective v2, which would incorrectly add therunTestssubcommand and skip the reporters logic. If the intent is specifically 2.x (and exactly2), use a stricter check.

src/index.ts:143
- The inline comment refers to the markdown reporter as "4.2x+", while the README uses "4.20+". Consider using the same version notation here to avoid ambiguity (4.2x could be read as 4.2.*).
// Request the markdown reporter (4.2x+) alongside the reporters Doc
- version.startsWith("2") would also match a version like "20.0.0" (or a
"2..."-prefixed tag) as v2, incorrectly adding runTests and skipping
the reporters logic. Match on the leading dot-separated segment
instead (version.split(".")[0] === "2").
- Reword the summary-attachment warning from "to the run" to "to the job

- The README says the markdown summary “doesn't apply” when
versionis unset/empty, but the implementation still attaches the summary wheneverdoc-detective-summary.mdexists; the only thing skipped is requesting the markdown reporter via--reporters. Reword to match the actual behavior so users with a locally-resolved Doc Detective that already emits the file aren't misled.
The action also attaches a Markdown summary (Doc Detective's own `markdown` reporter output) to the job summary page — no configuration required. This needs the Doc Detective 4.20+ series and doesn't apply to `version: 2.x` **or to an unset/empty `version`** (which runs whatever Doc Detective is already resolvable locally, e.g. via `npm link` — the action can't tell in advance whether that build supports the flag it needs, so it skips requesting the summary rather than risk a broken invocation). To request it, the action passes `--reporters terminal json markdown`, which overrides (not merges with) a `reporters` list set in your own Doc Detective config file.
src/index.ts:179
- The logged command string is built via
ddArgs.join(" "), which loses quoting (paths with spaces look like multiple args) and can emit newlines if an input contains them, making logs misleading and harder to debug. Prefer serializing each argv element with escaping so the log reflects the actual arg boundaries safely.
core.info(`Running Doc Detective: npx ${ddArgs.join(" ")}`);
…resence The README implied an unset/empty version fully excludes summary attachment, but the code's fs.existsSync check attaches doc-detective-summary.md whenever it exists, regardless of source — the action only skips requesting the markdown reporter for that case (since it can't safely assume --reporters support), not the attachment itself. Reword to match: it still attaches whatever a locally-resolved build produces on its own. isV2only detects semver-like strings where the first dot-separated segment is exactly "2". Sinceversioncan also be an npm tag (per action.yml/README), tags like2-betawould now be misclassified as non-v2 (so the action would omitrunTestsand add--reporters), which is a behavior regression compared to the previousstartsWith("2")check. Consider matching major version/tag prefixes of 2 via a regex that still avoids the20.0.0false-positive.
// If v2, add the 'runTests' command. Matched on the leading dot-separated
// segment, not a bare prefix: `startsWith("2")` would also match a
// version like "20.0.0" (or a "2..."-prefixed tag) as v2.
const isV2 = version.split(".")[0] === "2";
The prior round's version.split(".")[0] === "2" fix for the "20.0.0"
false positive introduced its own regression: version can be an npm tag
("2-beta") as well as a semver, and split(".") on a tag with no dot
compares the whole string against "2", wrongly rejecting it as v2 (a
behavior change from the original startsWith("2"), which correctly
matched it).
Use /^2(?!\d)/ instead: still matches "2", "2.0.0", "2-beta" as v2, but
excludes "20.0.0" and other "2"-followed-by-another-digit strings.
Verified against all cases raised across both rounds.

What
Every run attaches a Markdown summary to the job summary page — no configuration required.
Why / how
Supersedes #76, closed in favor of this. That PR hand-derived a summary from the JSON results (
renderMarkdownSummary), which meant guessing at an undocumented result shape and — for the HTML report — parsing an untrusted stdout line and validating/confining the path it named. Most of that PR's complexity and review findings came from that approach specifically.Doc Detective now ships its own
markdownreporter (4.2x+), so this just uses that instead:--reporters terminal json markdown(non-v2 only) alongside the existing reporters.reportOutputDirresolves a fixed-filename reporter's directory from--outputwhen it names a file — which this action's--output <RUNNER_TEMP>/doc-detective-output.jsonalways does — so the markdown file's path (<RUNNER_TEMP>/doc-detective-summary.md) is fully predictable from information the action already has. No stdout scraping, no path confinement/validation needed.Total diff: 47 lines, no new dependency.
Notes for reviewers
reporterslist would have that overridden by this action's--reportersflag, since Doc Detective's--reportersreplaces rather than merges. Existing/pre-existing behavior already implied a fixed reporter set (terminal, json, runFolderwere the previous defaults this action relied on); not aware of this action offering reporter customization before now.Verification
