Problem

getTrustedCertificatesForVerification() only calls getX509CertsByUrl() for non-attestation client auth. If the configured TRUST_LIST_URL is unreachable or misconfigured (common in local/dev/e2e), the entire flow fails even if the caller has already explicitly trusted a certificate via POST /x509/trusted.

This blocked mdoc issuance/verification flows that create and trust certificates dynamically in tests.

Solution

  • Import X509ModuleConfig.
  • In the NoAuth branch, try getX509CertsByUrl() first (preserve existing behaviour).
  • On error, resolve X509ModuleConfig from the agentContext and return trustedCertificates if non-empty. These are the certificates added via X509ModuleConfig / addTrustedCertificate() (e.g. POST /x509/trusted).
  • If there are no fallback certificates, re-throw the original error so remote trust list failures still surface in environments that expect them.

Attestation-based auth (clientAuthentication === 'client_attestation') is unchanged.

Verification

  • npx tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.build.json passes.
  • Enables the mdoc e2e flow to trust on-the-fly issuer certificates without a live trust list.
  • Diff scoped to src/cliAgent.ts only.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved certificate verification for connections that do not require client authentication.
    • If the standard trust-list cannot be reached, verification can fall back to configured trusted certificates when available. In production, this fallback must be explicitly enabled.
    • When neither source is available, the original trust-list error is preserved and reported.
    • Corrected credential type matching in credential queries and ensured optional credential and presentation fields are only set when provided.
  • Other Improvements
    • Forwarded messages now retain the original message type.

still targeted 0.6.2, causing yarn install to fail. Regenerate the
patches against the installed 0.7.0 build.

Walkthrough

For non-ClientAuth verification, a failed trust-list lookup can use configured agent trusted certificates according to environment settings. Credo patches update core credential handling, DIDComm forward messages, and OpenID4VC exports. Dependency version constraints also change.

Changes: Certificate lookup

Layer / File(s) Summary
NoAuth certificate fallback
src/cliAgent.ts, .env.sample
The callback uses configured agent trusted certificates after a failed trust-list lookup when fallback is allowed. In production, ALLOW_TRUST_LIST_FALLBACK must be exactly true. If fallback is disallowed or no configured certificates are available, the callback rethrows the lookup error. ClientAuth behavior remains unchanged. The sample environment file documents the setting. The logger default changes to LogLevel.Error.

Core credential and document-loader patch
patches/@credo-ts+core+0.6.2+002-fix-export-defaultDocumentLoader.patch, patches/@credo-ts+core+0.7.0+001+initial.patch
The core patch changes the LDP VC DCQL format filter, exports document-loader declarations, and conditionally assigns credential and presentation fields. It also widens VersionString to string. The previous core 0.6.2 patch file is deleted.
DIDComm forward-message type
patches/@credo-ts+didcomm+0.7.0.patch
The patch passes the original message type into created forward messages and copies the optional messageType value onto the forward message.
OpenID4VC repository exports
patches/@credo-ts+openid4vc+0.7.0.patch
The patch adds OpenId4VcIssuerRepository to the package declaration and runtime exports and imports it in the issuer entry point.

The build is likely to fail against the declared Credo 0.7 dependency until all lowercase LogLevel references are updated. The DIDComm patch also reveals inner message types to routing mediators. Separately, a hung trust-list server can still delay the new certificate fallback indefinitely because the lookup has no timeout. Resolve these issues before merging.

I agree, this auto configuration is required for automated testcases & even dev testing. One suggestion, can we make it configurable in such a way that it only works for dev/ testing not for agent configured for production env.

Allow fallback to agent trusted certificates only in non-production
environments. In production (NODE_ENV=PROD/PRODUCTION), fallback is
disabled unless explicitly enabled via ALLOW_TRUST_LIST_FALLBACK=true.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Keep VersionString consistent with the parser.

If a typed caller passes "dev" or "1.beta", parseVersionString now accepts the value at compile time and returns NaN components at runtime. Version comparisons then return incorrect results without an error. Keep the numeric version constraint, or validate strings before parsing them. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Do not expose the inner message type in the forward envelope.

The added assignment places the original application @type on every routed forward message. Credo serializes this property through instanceToPlain, so mediators can read it before decrypting msg. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

This conflicts with the routing privacy goal that intermediaries should learn only the routing data, not the inner message type. (aries-rfcs.readthedocs.io)

Remove this field and its related declarations. If a mediator requires this metadata, define an explicit, privacy-reviewed extension instead.

Proposed fix
-			forwardMessage["messageType"] = message['@type'];

Make production fallback visible at the default log level.

When production explicitly permits fallback and the trust-list lookup fails, this warn message is filtered by the new LogLevel.Error default. Operators then receive no fallback log unless they configure a lower log level. Log the production fallback at error, or otherwise emit an event visible at the default level.

# Migrating from Credo 0.6.x to 0.7.x

This document describes everything you need to know for updating Credo 0.6.x to 0.7.x. If you're not aware of how updating in Credo works make sure to first read the guide on Updating Credo.

Compared to the 0.5 → 0.6 update, 0.7.0 is a much smaller release. The main changes are:

  * Updated native crypto backends: `@hyperledger/anoncreds-*`, `@hyperledger/indy-vdr-*` and `@openwallet-foundation/askar-*` have been bumped to their new stable releases.
  * No more `ffi-napi` / `ref-napi` on Node.js: the new Askar, AnonCreds and Indy VDR native bindings no longer depend on `ffi-napi` and `ref-napi`. This removes a long-standing source of native build issues and unlocks support for modern Node.js versions.
  * Node.js 24 support: the new native bindings support Node.js 24. Node.js 20 may still work but is no longer supported.
  * A few API cleanups in `@credo-ts/core` around encoding utilities and the `LogLevel` enum.

Follow the steps below carefully to make the upgrade as smooth as possible.

## Dependency Updates

Update the following dependencies in your `package.json` to the new versions. The crypto backend packages must be bumped together with Credo to avoid mixing incompatible native binaries (you may want to pin these via `resolutions` / `overrides` in your `package.json` so that transitive dependencies don't pull older versions).

#### React Native

  * `"@credo-ts/core": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/didcomm": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/askar": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/anoncreds": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/openid4vc": "^0.7.0"`

  * `"@credo-ts/tenants": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/cheqd": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/indy-vdr": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@openwallet-foundation/askar-react-native": "^0.6.0"`
  * `"@hyperledger/anoncreds-react-native": "^0.4.0"`
  * `"@hyperledger/indy-vdr-react-native": "^0.3.0"`

#### Node

  * `"@credo-ts/core": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/didcomm": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/askar": "^0.7.0"`
  * `"@credo-ts/anoncreds": "^0.7.0"`
    const bytes = Buffer.from(str)
    const utf8 = Buffer.from(b64, 'base64').toString('ascii')
    `

##### 0.7.x

    `import { TypedArrayEncoder } from '@credo-ts/core'
    const bytes = TypedArrayEncoder.fromUtf8String(str)
    const utf8 = TypedArrayEncoder.toUtf8String(TypedArrayEncoder.fromBase64(b64))
    `

### `TypedArrayEncoder` method renames

Several methods on `TypedArrayEncoder` have been renamed for consistency:

0.6.x  | 0.7.x
--- | ---
`fromString(s)`  | `fromUtf8String(s)`
`toBase64URL(u8)`  | `toBase64Url(u8)`
`fromBase64URL(s)`  | `fromBase64Url(s)`

### `JsonEncoder` method renames

`JsonEncoder` methods that used to work with `Buffer` now work with `Uint8Array` and have been renamed accordingly:

0.6.x  | 0.7.x
--- | ---
`fromBuffer(data)`  | `fromUint8Array(data)`
`toBuffer(json)`  | `toUint8Array(json)`

### `LogLevel` enum keys are now PascalCase

The `LogLevel` enum keys have been renamed from lowercase to PascalCase to align with the rest of Credo's enums.

##### 0.6.x

    `import { LogLevel } from '@credo-ts/core'
    const level = LogLevel.debug
    // LogLevel.test, LogLevel.trace, LogLevel.debug, LogLevel.info,
    // LogLevel.warn, LogLevel.error, LogLevel.fatal
    `

##### 0.7.x

    `import { LogLevel } from '@credo-ts/core'
    const level = LogLevel.Debug
    // LogLevel.Test, LogLevel.Trace, LogLevel.Debug, LogLevel.Info,
    // LogLevel.Warn, LogLevel.Error, LogLevel.Fatal
    `

The numeric values are unchanged (`Test = 0 … Fatal = 6`), so any serialized configuration values still map correctly. Only the TypeScript/JavaScript identifier casing has changed.</excerpt>

Logging | Credo

# Logging

## Using the Default ConsoleLogger

To enable logging inside the framework a logger must be passed to the agent config. A simple `ConsoleLogger` can be imported from the framework.

    `import type { InitConfig } from '@credo-ts/core'
    import { ConsoleLogger, LogLevel } from '@credo-ts/core'
    const agentConfig: InitConfig = {
      // ... other config properties ...
      logger: new ConsoleLogger(LogLevel.info),
    }
    `

## Creating your own Logger

For more advanced use cases the `Logger` interface can be implemented. See the example below.

    `import { Logger, LogLevel } from '@credo-ts/core'
    class MyCustomLogger implements Logger {
      public logLevel: LogLevel
      public constructor(logLevel: LogLevel = LogLevel.off) {
        this.logLevel = logLevel
      }
      public test(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public trace(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public debug(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public info(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public warn(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public error(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
      public fatal(message: string, data?: Record<string, any>): void {
        console.log(message, data)
      }
    }

Complete the Credo 0.7 logger migration.

@credo-ts/core is pinned to 0.7.0, whose LogLevel enum uses PascalCase members. src/utils/logger.ts still references lowercase members, and the same issue exists in src/authentication.ts, src/utils/oid4vc-agent.ts, and src/utils/agent.ts. Rename all references, including LogLevel.error to LogLevel.Error and LogLevel.off to LogLevel.Off.

Review comment at @src/cliAgent.ts at line 425:
Complete the Credo 0.7 migration by updating lowercase LogLevel enum references
used with TsLogger and related agent configuration to their PascalCase members,
including Error and Off; apply this consistently across the logger,
authentication, OID4VC agent, and agent code.

After applying the fix, consider running `coderabbit review --agent` for local
review. Visit https://docs.coderabbit.ai/cli?utm_source=ghpr
