🎯 Changes

Changing only the outer .limit() or .offset() now moves an adapter-owned live-query Collection between pages while retaining its compiled plan and upstream subscriptions. This fixes numbered pagination across React, Preact, Vue, Solid, Angular, and Svelte through the existing query API.

For example, this React query keeps the same Collection when page or pageSize changes:

useLiveQuery({
  queryKey: ['orders', page, pageSize],
  query: (q) => q.from({ order: orders })
    .orderBy(({ order }) => order.id)
    .limit(pageSize)
    .offset(page * pageSize),
})

The existing identity rules still decide when an input changes. In React and Preact, an unchanged explicit key keeps its authored input, so both bounds belong in this example's key. The optimization requires a structured ordered plan, unchanged source objects and Collection options, and finite nonnegative safe-integer target bounds. Changes to predicates, ordering, projections, nested bounds, sources, or options follow normal compilation.

The shared resolver recognizes eligible window changes and calls the existing setWindow path. React and Preact apply moves after commit, and every adapter queues the actual move after any current Collection publication. This preserves committed rows during abandoned renders and avoids reentrant window changes from publication callbacks. DbClient and Suspense keep their existing shared-result identity behavior.

Exercising large windows also exposed two TopK defects: enumerating absent ranks and recovering an omitted width from rounded arithmetic. TopK now stores the exact authored width and limits output differences to installed ranks, while changed requested bounds still signal demand. The React commit hook also uses a server-safe effect, which avoids React 18's layout-effect diagnostic during supported server renders.

🔬 Oracle Coverage

The coverage map names the owners and receiving witnesses. An independent sort/filter/slice model checks rows, keyed state, Collection identity, and upstream ownership after each real framework's update cut.

  • Law: The maintainer decision for useLiveQuery: move an offset/limit page window without rebuilding the live query #2291 treats finite outer bound changes as moves of the same adapter-owned window. Existing identity and atomic-publication laws still apply. TopK partial moves retain omitted authored bounds. Supported SSR must not acquire a client-layout diagnostic from the new commit hook.
  • Reach: Shared campaigns reach ordinary/pending/publication states 13/7/9 times per lane. React/Preact receiving categories reach each required cut 7 times. Numeric cells reach both declared states in 100 histories. Each SSR cell runs 24 generated histories plus 11 shared replays: 840 compared renders across 24 cells, plus two disabled replays. The framework and SSR records preserve exact counts.
  • RED: Before the adapter fix, all six framework runs rejected Collection replacement. The React command is pnpm --filter @tanstack/react-db exec vitest run tests/conformance.test.tsx -t 'window histor' --coverage.enabled=false --typecheck.enabled=false. Publication-callback histories rejected synchronous moves before their scheduling fix. Before the TopK fix, partial-width histories failed the row comparison and large-bound moves failed to return. Before the SSR fix, the expanded receiver reported 13 intended React 18 diagnostic failures with 38 neighboring passes. The linked evidence records preserve complete commands, source snapshots, and failure categories.
  • GREEN: Final integration against main 0531c50ad passed 1,251 tests: IVM 657, selected core 396, React 154, and shared React window histories 44. IVM/core/React TypeScript, changed-file lint, and whitespace checks passed. Vue/Solid simplification checks passed 20 window tests and both package type checks. After commit-hook cleanup, explicit ESLint, core TypeScript, and 24 React window-render tests passed again.
  • Mutant: Checks reject unsafe source/options reuse, render-time or publication-time moves, rounded inherited widths, permanently clamped bounds, and missing demand signals. Restoring the original SSR effect fails all six seeded React 18 campaigns. Recorded seed/path replays reject the hostile source and pass after restoration.
  • Limits: The evidence covers bounded query shapes, numeric rows, controlled acquisition settlement, and specified framework cuts. It does not establish real-provider completeness, arbitrary schedules, a general CPU bound, or new include-publication semantics. Shared-cache ownership, opaque plans, supplied Collections, findOne, and adding/removing an outer limit retain their existing paths.

Historical qualification: Initial-loading, Collection-option, and Preact aborted-render coverage entered after the first production edit. Later GREEN and mutant results do not retroactively satisfy that original oracle-first gate. R2-5/G1 remains disclosed for maintainer disposition.

The adapter evidence, fresh oracle review, numeric evidence, SSR evidence, and preparation audit preserve the experiments and their limits. No oracle run budget decreased.

After the size refactor, the unchanged IVM suite passes 657 tests, four focused core suites pass 4,446, five React suites pass 145, and all six framework window receivers pass 106. Vue, Solid, and Angular full suites pass 152, 132, and 92 tests respectively; Angular retains one existing TODO. Package types, explicit ESLint, changed-file lint, formatting, and whitespace checks pass.

Guarded replay now names each originating framework driver, including React's dependency-list entry point. The replay audit records 21 passing driver/history routes, 63 protocol checks, and rejected wrong-driver controls.

✅ Checklist

  • I have tested this code locally with pnpm test.

The complete root test command did not run. Local validation used the full IVM suite, selected core and framework suites, types, builds, and lint as recorded above.

🚀 Release Impact

  • This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
  • This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).

The changeset patches core, IVM, and all six adapters. The shared resolver handles callback preparation and plan matching across adapters. TopK shares its boundary calculation, and Angular reads one observer snapshot. Ownership, commit timing, and exact bounds remain enforced. The preparation audit records why simpler synchronous, rounded, or permanently clamped designs fail.

The size follow-up removes 215 net production lines from the published implementation (82 net lines across the complete branch). It removes intermediate rank arrays, redundant tuple/accessor wrappers, duplicated callback preparation, and Angular's parallel snapshots. React's development profiling no longer ships its measurement and warning machinery in production. The simplification record records the rejected reductions and remaining limits.

Against main 0531c50ad, the seven measured package bundles now add 83 gzip bytes and 35 brotli bytes, down from 772/626. The typical React app is 15 gzip bytes smaller than main; its brotli change is +126 bytes, down from +515. The typical gzip scenario is net negative; the combined package measurement is not. Svelte's unchanged adapter source retains its separate +110 gzip-byte package measurement. Test and evidence growth does not enter these production measurements. Exact React 18 aliases are development-only receiving dependencies.

Fixes #2291

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Page changes made through finite query limits or offsets now reuse the existing live query and its source subscriptions across React, Preact, Vue, Solid, Angular, and Svelte adapters.
    • Moving between page windows preserves the requested bounds and returns the expected rows, including when fewer rows are available than requested.
    • Numeric top-K windows now update their selected rows correctly when offsets or limits change, including for grouped results.
    • React server rendering no longer emits useLayoutEffect warnings for live queries.

Test added 2 commits October 30, 2026 13:27
Changing finite outer limit/offset bounds moves the existing adapter-owned
Collection across six frameworks without new hook API. Preserve exact TopK
bounds and avoid React 18 server layout-effect diagnostics.

Law: Maintainer decision for #2291 retains the same finite outer window;
the TopK API preserves omitted authored bounds; supported SSR adds no
client-layout diagnostic. Existing cache, identity and publication laws apply.
Reach: Six shared framework drivers cover page/plan/source/options, loading
and publication histories; React/Preact receive speculative renders. Numeric
profiles reach 100 histories per cell. SSR measures 840 generated/example
render comparisons across 24 cells, plus two fixed disabled replays.
RED: Original adapter replacement fails retention on unchanged production;
TopK has row-assertion and timeout controls; React 18 reports 13 expected
pre-edit diagnostic assertion failures with 38 neighboring passes.
GREEN: Original broad validation, fresh oracle reviews, 1,251 final integrated-tree
tests and 20 affected Vue/Solid histories pass, with types and changed lint.
Mutant: Unsafe source/options reuse, render/publication mutation, rounded or
clamped numeric bounds and the original SSR effect are rejected. Direct
seed/path replays are recorded in the durable oracle evidence.
Limits: Finite structured adapter-owned windows; shared caches and provider
completeness keep their existing owners. Initial-loading/options/Preact
coverage entered after the first production edit; that historical process
gap remains disclosed, not retroactively repaired.

Two small resolver issues should be fixed before or soon after merge. Invalid object inputs lose their specific error message. Pooled live queries in Angular could throw on a page-window change instead of recompiling. Neither affects the main retained-collection page-window behavior.

The description includes all required sections and provides detailed change motivation, oracle laws and evidence, validation results, known limits, test status, and release impact. It clearly states that the complete root pnpm test command was not run.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#2291] The PR implements the requested numbered-pagination behavior. The shared resolver retains an adapter-owned Collection when only eligible outer .limit() or .offset() values change. It calls the existing setWindow path and retains the compiled plan and upstream subscriptions. React and Preact defer moves until commit, and all adapters defer moves until after current Collection publication. Other query, source, and option changes retain normal compilation. Conformance and framework tests cover Collection identity, rows, subscriptions, pending work, publication callbacks, and abandoned renders. The proposed window option is an implementation suggestion, not a separate coding requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed production code supports [#2291]. The TopK changes correct partial and large-window behavior required by the retained-window path. The React server-safe effect prevents the commit hook from producing a React 18 SSR diagnostic. Adapter changes adopt the shared resolver. Test harness changes, oracle tests, replay checks, evidence documents, development dependencies, and the changeset support implementation and validation. No unrelated production feature is demonstrated.

commit: d4ca8d7

Test and others added 3 commits October 30, 2026 13:37
Law: ORC-007 and the guarded-replay protocol require a named owner and
exact seed/path execution for each registered property.
Reach: All 18 new routes report completed, nonfailed witness records.
RED: The unchanged manifest fails its missing-owner assertion while 40
neighboring replay checks pass.
GREEN: All 41 replay checks and all 18 seed-2291/path-0 guarded commands
pass, with core types, ESLint and changed-file oracle lint.
Mutant: The original incomplete manifest is rejected; existing guard
controls also reject absent or altered replay execution.
Limits: This repairs routing only. Models, histories, production, run
budgets and existing receiving-path limits remain unchanged. React is the
canonical guarded route for the shared framework properties.

See docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/2026-10-30-adapter-page-windows-prep.md
for witness counts, commands, source hashes and review evidence.

Review comments at
@docs/contributing/oracle-reviews/2026-10-30-adapter-page-windows.md:
- Around line 132-133: Update the “unbounded transitions” statement to clarify
that an ordered query changing from explicit .limit(Infinity) to a finite
safe-integer limit may retain its Collection; preserve the record’s
finite-window evidence limit and the existing paths for other unbounded
transitions.

Review comments at @packages/db/tests/oracle-replay-manifest.ts:
- Around line 16-21: Update the window-history entries in the replay manifest so
replay uses the adapter that produced the failure: assign adapter-specific
property names and owners, or include the failing adapter in replay selection.
Keep the three window-history properties associated with the correct adapter
rather than routing every failure to the React driver.

Restore the query check before the config branch.

queryConfig returns any non-null object as a config. An object without a query property therefore enters the config path and bypasses the specific live-query validation error. Keep this check consistent with prepareLiveQueryValue.

Exclude pooled results from the window-move registry.

A pooled result is a raw PooledLiveQuery with config === undefined. If the resolver records it, the next window-only update passes previous.config to getBuilderFromConfig, which accesses config.utils and can throw before normal compilation.

Record only unshared Collections:
