Users report the database growing without bound — several GB in some reports. Nothing in the suite measured storage over time or load time against history length: the existing Stopwatch uses time single operations, and #223 only added codec/index unit tests. This adds a soak that does both, so a regression in either shows up as a red run instead of a user report.
What it does
test/db_growth_soak_test.dart, opt-in with OPENSTRAP_SOAK=1 (skipped in the normal flutter test; a simulated day costs 15–30 s).
Growth. Simulates days of wear through the real commitSyncBatch, the real derive pass (DerivationEngine.run(heavy: true), which prunes and archives) and vacuumIfBloated, and records file / used / freelist / WAL bytes and per-table size for every day in build/soak/db_growth.csv. After a warm-up of rawRetentionDays + 3 days it fails if:
decoded_onehz keeps growing (it should plateau at the retention window);
the file plus its -wal holds much more than the data needs (> 1.25× used + 32 MB);
used bytes grow faster than SOAK_BUDGET_MB (default 3 MB/day, least-squares slope).
All three are checked and reported together.
Load time. Ages the same database to 30 / 180 / 365 / 730 days of history and times, median of 5 after a warm-up:
launch: close + reopen, latestSample, refreshComputeFreshness;
It fails if the longest history is more than SOAK_MAX_RATIO (default 2) × the shortest + 25 ms.
Knobs:SOAK_DAYS (default 14), SOAK_DEVICE (gen4 or mg; MG adds the ~10.5k undecodable_rec_v20 frames a day the MG strap produces), SOAK_HISTORY, SOAK_BUDGET_MB, SOAK_MAX_RATIO.
One approximation. Real analytics take ~75 s a day under flutter test, so one day is derived for real and its derived rows (day_result, metric_series, metric_series_version, sleep_session_candidates, wake_day_features) are cloned onto the other days and marked finalized. The prune then behaves as on a healthy install where every day finalizes. History for the load test is built the same way, plus cloned substrate_archive buckets for the archive policy's 365 days.
.github/workflows/soak.yml runs it nightly (and on workflow_dispatch) for gen4 and MG, with the same Flutter pin as test.yml, contents: read, and the CSV uploaded as an artifact.
What it finds on current main

22 → 303 ms ❌
32 → 321 ms ❌
Trends, 30 → 730 days
7 → 55 ms
12 → 60 ms
The -wal stays the size of the whole database after a VACUUM. In WAL mode VACUUM writes every page through the WAL, and with no journal_size_limit a checkpoint never shrinks it, so disk use doubles for good.
MG undecodable frames cost 115 MB/day until the prune.raw_archive's primary key is (device_id, hex), so each 4,256-character frame is stored in the table and again in its key index; the thinned remainder still adds ~1.5 MB/day.
getToday slows with history.recentDayResults joins every day's full row and sorts it before its LIMIT.
sleep_session_candidates also grows ~73 MB/year (it is never pruned per day); minor.
So the nightly job is red on main until those are fixed. Fixes follow as separate PRs. Times are desktop debug-mode flutter test, so phones are slower; the ratios are what the test asserts.
Tests
flutter analyze: no issues.
Without OPENSTRAP_SOAK both tests skip (flutter test test/db_growth_soak_test.dart → all skipped), so the PR workflow is unaffected.
Ran locally at defaults for gen4 and MG; results above.
Add database growth and history-scaling safeguards while optimizing recent-day reads to keep application load times stable.
New Features:
Add an opt-in database growth and load-time soak covering gen4 and MG device histories, with configurable durations, history lengths, budgets, and thresholds.
Generate per-day database size reports and run nightly or on-demand soak checks with uploaded CSV artifacts.
Bug Fixes:
Limit recent-day result queries to the newest requested days before fetching full rows, preventing performance degradation as database history grows.
Enhancements:
Measure steady-state storage growth, disk overhead, retention behavior, and launch, home, and trends load-time scaling against history length.
Add regression coverage verifying newest-N result reads preserve served-version behavior while avoiding full-history sorting.
CI:
Add a nightly and manually triggered GitHub Actions soak workflow for gen4 and MG using the pinned Flutter version.
Tests:
Add opt-in integration tests that exercise realistic ingestion, derivation, pruning, archiving, vacuuming, and long-history load scenarios.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Chores
Added nightly and on-demand database soak checks for supported devices. On-demand runs can specify test duration and history periods.
Checks run on two device types, and CSV reports are saved even when a check fails.
Performance
Improved selection of recent database results, which can reduce unnecessary work when retrieving them.
Simulates days of use through the real sync commit, derive-pass prune,
substrate archive and VACUUM, and records per-table size per day in
build/soak/db_growth.csv. Then ages the install to 30/180/365/730 days of
history and times the launch reads, the home load and the trend charts.
Opt-in (OPENSTRAP_SOAK=1), a simulated day costs 15-30 s; the new soak
workflow runs it nightly for gen4 and WHOOP MG and keeps the CSV.
On current main it fails on three real problems:
- after a VACUUM the -wal stays the size of the whole database (no
journal_size_limit), doubling disk use;
- WHOOP MG grows 3.5 MB/day in steady state (thinned v20 frames), 115 MB/day
before the prune;
- getToday goes from ~20 ms to ~300-400 ms between 30 and 730 days of
history: recentDayResults sorts every day's full row before its LIMIT.

Files
Adds an opt-in end-to-end soak test that measures database storage growth across simulated days and load-time scaling across database history lengths.
Feeds synthetic data through production ingest, derivation, pruning, archiving, and vacuum paths.
Records file, used, freelist, WAL, row-count, per-table, and per-day timing metrics in a CSV report.
Supports configurable device, duration, history, growth budget, and timing thresholds through environment variables.
Uses a one-day real analytics derive and clones finalized derived rows for the remaining synthetic days, explicitly approximating expensive analytics while preserving pruning behavior.
test/db_growth_soak_test.dart
Adds scheduled and manually triggerable CI coverage for the soak on both supported device scenarios.
Runs nightly and via workflow_dispatch with configurable simulated days and history lengths.
Tests gen4 and MG in independent matrix jobs with serialized Flutter test execution and a two-hour job timeout.
Pins Flutter, installs dependencies, enables the soak flag, and uploads the CSV report even when the test fails.

**Empty home data passes load soak**
When a `getToday` regression returns an empty result quickly, `getToday` can return an empty/default result immediately and still satisfy the timing comparison at line 500; the test records durations for `home.today` at line 461 but never checks its result. The soak then passes while the home load is broken.
Assert that the timed home calls return representative data from the populated fixture, separately from their timing checks.

<issue_to_address>
**Cloned archive metadata disagrees with payload**
When history extension copies an archived bucket for an older day, the copied `substrate_archive` row keeps the source `blob` and `fingerprint` while changing `utc_day`, `from_ts`, and `to_ts`. The stored bucket therefore describes timestamps different from its compressed payload, so archive consumers can reject it or read misdated substrate and the soak no longer models valid archive history.
Create each cloned bucket by decoding the source payload, shifting its timestamps, and re-encoding it with a matching fingerprint, or avoid inserting synthetic archive rows.

<issue_to_address>
**Cloned results retain the source day’s timestamps**
When `cloneDay` copies the template into a different `day_result` day, `cloneDay` changes the `day_result.day_id` but copies `payload_json` unchanged. `refreshComputeFreshness` associates the cloned row’s new day label with the source day’s `data_edge_sec` and sleep-window timestamps, so the aged fixture reports freshness for dates that do not match the stored result data and the launch-load measurement exercises inconsistent rows.
When cloning day results, rewrite the date-specific timestamps inside `payload_json` to match the destination day, or generate valid per-day payloads for the fixture.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**History scaling goes untested**
When `SOAK_HISTORY` contains only one history length, `history.first` and `history.last` select the same result, so the comparison checks that history against itself and the soak reports success even if loads regress at longer histories.
Require at least two distinct history lengths before comparing the shortest and longest results.

</code_context>
<issue_to_address>
**History measurements use wrong lengths**
When `SOAK_DAYS` exceeds the shortest requested history length, `oldest` starts at `first` and `extendHistoryTo` only adds older days, so a `SOAK_DAYS` value larger than the shortest `SOAK_HISTORY` entry leaves that shortest measurement with more history than its label says. The reported load-time comparison then uses the wrong baselines.
Ensure each timed scenario contains exactly the requested history, or reject configurations where `SOAK_DAYS` exceeds the shortest `SOAK_HISTORY` value.
</issue_to_address>
recentDayResults applied its LIMIT after joining and sorting every day's
served row, payload_json (~100 KB) included, so the 30-day read behind
refreshComputeFreshness went from ~60 ms at 30 days of history to 250-600 ms
at 730. That runs on every derive and on every Home load while a night is
still building: the growth soak (OpenStrap#609) measured getToday at 22 -> 303 ms.
Pick the newest N served versions from the covering index first, then fetch
only those rows. The served-version subquery is factored out of
_servedDayJoin, which expands to the same SQL as before, so the ceiling stays
in one place. recentDayResultsMeta takes the same join.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
An absolute bound (600-day read <= 3x the 30-day read + 30 ms) can fail on a
slow or loaded runner. Time the old full-history query back to back on the
same 600 days instead, so load slows both sides alike: 3x faster or better
(measured ~10x with the change, 1x without).
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- Concurrency group per event, so a manual run cannot cancel the nightly
one before its CSV is uploaded.
- The load test asserts Home, today and the day list come back populated,
so a load that got fast by returning nothing is not a pass.
- SOAK_HISTORY needs two or more distinct lengths, each at least SOAK_DAYS;
otherwise the comparison checks a history against itself or mislabels it.
- Header notes that cloned rows keep the template's timestamps and blobs;
nothing timed decodes them.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The template's second day stepped by Duration(days: 1), which lands on the
same calendar date across a fall-back DST night (AGENTS.md 3.7); use
calendar arithmetic like the rest of the file. SOAK_HISTORY is now parsed
and checked in setUpAll, so a bad value fails in seconds instead of after
the growth run. The SOAK_MAX_RATIO header now states the per-load
comparison and the 25 ms slack.

## 4. Recurring bug patterns — what actually ships broken here
### 4.9 Dependency pinning / lockfile / release metadata
Four separate passes. Committed path `dependency_overrides` broke a release;
`pubspec.lock` resolved a package via a stale local path; floating `ref: main`
rode analytics v42 into 0.9.13; a PR bumped `kAlgoVersion` while the lock still
pinned the pre-fix analytics commit, requiring a manual merge-order gate; and
`0.9.17+1` shipped versionCode 1 → `INSTALL_FAILED_VERSION_DOWNGRADE`, making
the release uninstallable.
`pubspec_overrides.yaml` redirects siblings to `../analytics` / `../protocol` and
is gitignored — committing a path override fails CI `flutter pub get` (exit 66).
The tracked `pubspec.lock` records `source: git` + `resolved-ref` for both
siblings, and `.github/scripts/check_sibling_pins.sh` fails CI if it ever
records `path`. `pubspec.yaml` stays the source of truth. `version:` must
always keep its `+BUILD` suffix, and the iOS widget/watch
`MARKETING_VERSION`/`CURRENT_PROJECT_VERSION` are bumped manually and drift.

In WAL mode a VACUUM writes every page through the -wal. A checkpoint copies
it back and the next write restarts at its head, but nothing ever shrank the
file, so after the first VACUUM the -wal stayed as large as the database for
good: 702 MB beside a 698 MB file on a WHOOP MG install in the growth soak
(#609).
Set journal_size_limit (32 MB) on every open, so each restart truncates the
file back, healing existing installs on their next write; and checkpoint with
TRUNCATE right after the VACUUM so the space comes back immediately. Both
pragmas return a row, so they go through rawQuery and are never fatal.

* keep the existing tests as they were formatted
the test file was reformatted along with the new timing test, which buried
the one real addition in a few hundred lines of reflow.
* pick the newest days first in recentDayScalars too
same sort-everything-then-limit shape as recentDayResults: every served row
was extracted and sorted to return the last N.

Write the soak report from a finally path.
The workflow states that the per-day report is kept as an artifact “either way.” A failure in ingest, derivation, vacuum, or snapshot currently exits before writeReport(). Because the upload uses if-no-files-found: ignore, the failed run can lose its diagnostic CSV without a workflow error.
Handle an empty snapshot list so a failure before the first snapshot still produces a valid header-only report.

Wrap the per-day ingestion and snapshot loop in a try/finally and call
writeReport() in the finally block so the artifact is written even if processing
fails. Update writeReport() to handle an empty snaps list by sorting table names
without accessing snaps.last, producing a valid header-only report when no
snapshots were recorded.

@coderabbitai on the outside-diff note in db_growth_soak_test.dart: the report is now written from a finally around the day loop, and a run that fails before its first snapshot writes the header alone.
@abdulsaheel Confirmed in test/db_growth_soak_test.dart: finally calls writeReport() when the day loop exits, including on failure. If the loop fails before the first snapshot, writeReport() writes the CSV header without data rows. This addresses the outside-diff note.

Why
Users report the database growing without bound — several GB in some reports. Nothing in the suite measured storage over time or load time against history length: the existing
Stopwatchuses time single operations, and #223 only added codec/index unit tests. This adds a soak that does both, so a regression in either shows up as a red run instead of a user report.What it does
test/db_growth_soak_test.dart, opt-in withOPENSTRAP_SOAK=1(skipped in the normalflutter test; a simulated day costs 15–30 s).Growth. Simulates days of wear through the real
commitSyncBatch, the real derive pass (DerivationEngine.run(heavy: true), which prunes and archives) andvacuumIfBloated, and records file / used / freelist / WAL bytes and per-table size for every day inbuild/soak/db_growth.csv. After a warm-up ofrawRetentionDays + 3days it fails if:decoded_onehzkeeps growing (it should plateau at the retention window);-walholds much more than the data needs (> 1.25× used + 32 MB);SOAK_BUDGET_MB(default 3 MB/day, least-squares slope).All three are checked and reported together.
Load time. Ages the same database to 30 / 180 / 365 / 730 days of history and times, median of 5 after a warm-up:
launch: close + reopen,latestSample,refreshComputeFreshness;home:HomeData.load+availableDays, withgetToday/getInsights/availableDayssplit out;trends:getChart('readiness')+getChart('hrv').It fails if the longest history is more than
SOAK_MAX_RATIO(default 2) × the shortest + 25 ms.Knobs:
SOAK_DAYS(default 14),SOAK_DEVICE(gen4ormg; MG adds the ~10.5kundecodable_rec_v20frames a day the MG strap produces),SOAK_HISTORY,SOAK_BUDGET_MB,SOAK_MAX_RATIO.One approximation. Real analytics take ~75 s a day under
flutter test, so one day is derived for real and its derived rows (day_result,metric_series,metric_series_version,sleep_session_candidates,wake_day_features) are cloned onto the other days and marked finalized. The prune then behaves as on a healthy install where every day finalizes. History for the load test is built the same way, plus clonedsubstrate_archivebuckets for the archive policy's 365 days..github/workflows/soak.ymlruns it nightly (and onworkflow_dispatch) for gen4 and MG, with the same Flutter pin astest.yml,contents: read, and the CSV uploaded as an artifact.What it finds on current main
-walstays the size of the whole database after a VACUUM. In WAL mode VACUUM writes every page through the WAL, and with nojournal_size_limita checkpoint never shrinks it, so disk use doubles for good.raw_archive's primary key is(device_id, hex), so each 4,256-character frame is stored in the table and again in its key index; the thinned remainder still adds ~1.5 MB/day.getTodayslows with history.recentDayResultsjoins every day's full row and sorts it before itsLIMIT.sleep_session_candidatesalso grows ~73 MB/year (it is never pruned per day); minor.So the nightly job is red on
mainuntil those are fixed. Fixes follow as separate PRs. Times are desktop debug-modeflutter test, so phones are slower; the ratios are what the test asserts.Tests
flutter analyze: no issues.OPENSTRAP_SOAKboth tests skip (flutter test test/db_growth_soak_test.dart→ all skipped), so the PR workflow is unaffected.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
