Coach: sign in with ChatGPT to use your ChatGPT plan instead of an API key - #602
The AI coach only works with an API key today, so anyone who already pays for ChatGPT pays twice to use it. On Sept 29 OpenAI opened Sign in with ChatGPT to open-source apps: an app can register itself, with no client secret and no approval step, and run eligible Responses API requests on the user's own ChatGPT plan (docs). This PR adds that as a coach provider. It's the official route, not the unofficial one that reuses Codex CLI tokens. OpenAI's docs specifically say not to call ChatGPT's backend-api.
What users see
Before: AI settings list Ollama, LM Studio, OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter. Every cloud option needs a base URL and an API key.
After: a ChatGPT option sits between the local and cloud presets. Picking it hides the base URL, API and key fields and shows Continue with ChatGPT. After sign-in:
A one-time sheet says "You're using your ChatGPT plan", as OpenAI's UI guidelines require.
List models shows the account's models.
Manage usage opens chatgpt.com/settings/usage, and Sign out of ChatGPT revokes the sign-in.
The coach header reads "<model> · Using ChatGPT plan".
The coach, the briefings and the journal all use it, because they share CoachEngine.postChat.
How it works
New file lib/coach/coach_chatgpt.dart: OAuth with PKCE, state and nonce, plus dynamic client registration (dynamic_agent_client with a persisted urn:uuid host id). The issued client id is saved and reused on later sign-ins, as OpenAI asks.
Login callback: the redirect goes to a listener on 127.0.0.1, as the docs require. The page opens with LaunchMode.inAppBrowserView (SFSafariViewController / Custom Tab) so the app stays in the foreground and the listener stays alive; on iOS the full Safari app would suspend us. There's a Cancel sign-in button, and leaving the screen cancels too, because the app gets no signal when the user just closes the browser.
Tokens: kept in the keychain with the same first_unlock accessibility as the BYOK key, so a locked-phone background relaunch can still read them. Refresh is serialized so concurrent callers share one rotation. A dead refresh token signs the user out; a network or server error keeps the credentials.
Requests: one branch in postChat sends stream: true and store: false, buffers the SSE stream and passes the response.completed payload to the existing CoachResponses.reply parser. system input items become developer (the route rejects system). Sampling params were already never sent on Responses. The fail-closed request size ceiling still applies.
Errors: OpenAI's subscription_sharing_* codes become plain messages. Billing errors stop the request and never fall back to an API key. Signing out leaves the coach in ChatGPT mode, unconfigured, instead of quietly switching back to a saved key.
Config:CoachConfig gains usesChatGpt, and configured, apiBase, api and keyUnreadable follow it, so the existing consent prompts (ECG, briefing) see api.openai.com as a cloud endpoint. The BYOK settings stay untouched for switching back.
Reasoning replay: keyed separately (…#chatgpt), so a plan turn never replays encrypted reasoning from an API-key turn on the same base.
Android: a CustomTabsService<queries> entry, so Android 11+ finds a Custom Tab instead of falling back to a WebView.
Docs: a new section in guides/AI_COACH.md, and PRIVACY.md updated.
The ID token's issuer, audience, expiry and nonce are checked. The signature isn't: the token arrives straight from the token endpoint over TLS in a PKCE code exchange, which OIDC Core §3.1.3.7(6) allows. I can add JWKS verification with pointycastle if you'd rather have it.
Testing
flutter analyze is clean (Flutter 3.41.6, the CI pin).
New test/coach_chatgpt_test.dart, 11 tests:
a full sign-in round trip through a real loopback listener: registration params, a stray wrong-state hit rejected, code exchange, reuse of the registration on the second sign-in
declined consent, and cancel
ID token claim checks
refresh: one rotation for concurrent callers, dead token vs. transient failure
request shape: endpoint, bearer, stream/store, no temperature, system→developer
SSE parsing, usage-limit and mid-stream failures, and a cut-off stream
no plan scope means not configured
model list filtering
russian_review_findings_test: the new card made the setup list taller, which left "List models" a few px off the 800×600 test surface after scrollUntilVisible. I added ensureVisible before the tap.
The full suite passes apart from failures that also happen on a clean main on macOS: three timezone-dependent tests, which pass with TZ=UTC, and health_workout_export_delete_gate_test, because HealthExport.isApple is true on a macOS host.
Tested on a device: iPhone 16 Pro Max on iOS 27.0.1, with a real ChatGPT account. Sign-in works end to end, and coach replies come back on the plan. The first device run found that the route's response.completed event can carry an empty output, which made every reply fail with "Empty response from provider". ec6035b builds the output from response.output_item.done and adds a test for it. ec6035b also addresses all 13 CodeRabbit/Sourcery findings.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
AI Coach can connect through an eligible ChatGPT Plus or Pro plan, with sign-in and model selection available without an API key. API-key setup remains available.
Coach requests can use plan usage and stop when the plan limit is reached, without switching to API billing. Sign-in tokens are stored securely on the device and sent only to OpenAI.
Coach settings let you manage plan usage or sign out. Resetting all data attempts to clear ChatGPT sign-in data and warns you if sign-in may remain.
Documentation
Updated guidance explains that ChatGPT plan requests send data to OpenAI under your ChatGPT account, and covers applicable data controls, terms, usage policies, and how to manage or disconnect the connection.
… an API key
Adds OpenAI's official "Sign in with ChatGPT" plan usage for open-source
apps as a coach provider. Dynamic client registration (no secret), PKCE +
state + nonce, loopback callback on 127.0.0.1 in an in-app browser, tokens in
the keychain with first-unlock access, serialized rotating refresh, revoke on
sign-out. Requests go through the one provider POST to the public Responses
API with stream:true/store:false; system input becomes developer. Billing
errors (usage limit, not eligible) stop the request and never fall back to an
API key.

**Stale auth work restores sessions**
When a keychain load or token refresh overlaps sign-in or sign-out, `_refresh` can call `_store(next)` after `signOut` clears the session, while `load` can apply an older keychain read after sign-in or sign-out. The stale result restores credentials or clears a new session, so the user appears signed in after signing out or is asked to sign in again after signing in.
Track session changes and discard results from loads and refreshes that began before the current sign-in or sign-out.

**ChatGPT survives data reset**
When the user resets all app data after signing in with ChatGPT, `AppState.resetAllData` clears preferences and the BYOK key but leaves the ChatGPT session in secure storage and in the live `CoachConfig`. `ChatGptAuth.load` restores that session on the next launch, so the user remains signed in and can continue using ChatGPT.
Clear the ChatGPT session from secure storage and in-memory state as part of `resetAllData`.

<issue_to_address>
**Failed writes erase sessions**
When a secure-storage write fails for a reason other than a duplicate item and the retry also fails, `_store` treats every write error as a duplicate-item error, deletes the existing session, and retries. If the retry fails, the persisted session is lost; during refresh, the rotated refresh token is also left unsaved, so the user must sign in again.
Only delete and retry for duplicate-item errors; preserve the existing session when a write fails for another reason.

<issue_to_address>
**Failed deletion blocks sign-out**
When secure storage rejects the session deletion during sign-out, `_store(null)` propagates the deletion error before clearing `_session` or the persisted-session marker. `signOut` therefore fails and the app continues to present the user as signed in, even if revocation already succeeded.
Clear the in-memory session and marker even when secure-storage deletion fails, and prevent the deletion error from leaving sign-out incomplete.

**Reminders target unavailable coach**
When chatGPT mode is selected but the session is signed out or plan usage was declined, while AI briefing reminders are enabled, `aiConfigured` becomes true based on `usesChatGpt`, so the reminder scheduler arms briefings even though `CoachConfig.configured` is false. The user receives reminders for briefings the coach cannot generate.
Set `aiConfigured` from whether the selected coach is actually configured and able to make requests, not merely from the selected mode.

**First-use notice gets skipped**
When the initial registration saves a client ID but the first successful plan-enabled sign-in happens only after a declined consent or a failed sign-in attempt, `signIn` treats the saved client ID as proof of a returning sign-in, so the UI skips `_welcome()` on the first successful ChatGPT-plan sign-in. The user can enable plan usage without seeing the required notice.
Track whether the first successful plan-enabled sign-in has occurred separately from whether a client ID was saved.

**Reasoning crosses ChatGPT accounts**
When a saved conversation contains a ChatGPT response and the user signs into a different ChatGPT account before continuing it, after a user signs out and signs into a different ChatGPT account, `replayBase` is unchanged; `CoachResponses.request` therefore replays stored `_responses_output` from the previous account when the model matches. The next request sends that prior account’s opaque reasoning to OpenAI under the new account, and the provider can reject the continuation.
Include the ChatGPT account subject in the reasoning replay namespace, or invalidate stored reasoning when the signed-in subject changes.

**Sign-out may leave access active**
When the revoke request fails or returns a non-200 response, `ChatGptAuth.signOut` clears local tokens even when revocation is not confirmed, leaving the remote grant active until it is disconnected separately. The guide unconditionally says sign-out revokes the sign-in, so users can believe access has ended when it has not.
Qualify the guide’s claim that sign-out revokes access and direct users to disconnect the app in ChatGPT settings if revocation is not confirmed.

When the ChatGPT secure-storage read hangs while the BYOK read completes, `CoachConfig.load` awaits `chatgptLoad` before notifying listeners, so a hung ChatGPT read prevents listeners from learning that the BYOK settings loaded. Already-built screens remain stale for the rest of the process.

**Incorrect code exchange goes undetected**
When the sign-in code-exchange request contains a code different from the callback's code, when `signIn` exchanges a code other than the callback's `code-1`, the “registers, exchanges the code, and signs back in to the same registration” test still passes: its token mock accepts every code and the assertions never check the submitted code.
Have the token mock reject an unexpected code or assert that each exchange submits the callback's code.

**API-key retry goes undetected**
When a user has a saved API key and a ChatGPT billing error triggers a fallback retry, when a billing error triggers a retry using a saved API key, the “usage limit, mid-stream failure and a cut-off stream are errors, never a fallback” test still passes: its setup saves no API key, and its mock returns the same error for any request.
Configure a BYOK key in this test and assert that the error causes no fallback request.

refresh, write failure, reset, welcome-once, empty completed output.
Tested on a real device: iPhone 16 Pro Max, iOS 27.0.1, release build signed with my own team, signed in with my own ChatGPT account.
Sign in with ChatGPT works end to end. The in-app browser opens the OpenAI sign-in, and the redirect lands back in the app on the loopback listener.
Coach replies come back on the ChatGPT plan.
The first device run found a real bug the mocks couldn't: every reply failed with "Empty response from provider". On this route the response.completed event's output can be empty, and the items arrive earlier as response.output_item.done. ec6035b builds the output from those events, with a test for the empty-completed case, and replies work on the device after that.
ec6035b also addresses all 13 CodeRabbit/Sourcery findings. Replies are on each thread.

- signIn captures the session generation and commits through the same
serialized store as refresh; the generation is checked inside the lock
before and after the write, so a sign-out during a pending sign-in or a
mid-write store cannot leave a session behind.
- signOut/forgetAll cancel a pending browser sign-in and clear the keychain
inside the same queue.
- load restores a keychain record only when the present marker vouches for
it; an orphan (failed sign-out delete, reinstall leftover) is deleted.

Prevent sign-out from deleting a newer session.
The settings flow allows signIn and signOut to run concurrently. After signOut increments _generation, a new sign-in can commit through _store. The pending sign-out still revokes the older captured token, then queues serialized deletion without checking whether a newer session committed. That deletion can remove the new session from secure storage.
Make the final deletion conditional on the sign-out generation and current session state, with the check inside the serialized deletion operation.

signOut remembers its generation and skips its serialized keychain delete
when a sign-in committed (or another sign-out began) while revocation was
out, so signing back in during that window keeps the new session.
@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding in your last review, "Prevent sign-out from deleting a newer session" (coach_chatgpt.dart around 596-598): fixed in 2ad8eb8.
signOut keeps the generation it bumped to. Inside the serialized keychain operation, it skips the delete and the marker clear if the generation has moved on since then, meaning a sign-in committed or another sign-out began. So a sign-in that commits while revocation is still out keeps its session.
Regression test (in test/, which your path filters exclude): "a sign-in during a slow sign-out survives it". It holds the revoke request on a Completer, signs in again, then releases it, and asserts the new session is still in memory, in the keychain, and marked present. It fails without the fix (keychain empty) and passes with it.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@MouryB Thanks for the fix. I verified that signOut() captures its generation before any await and checks it inside _serialized, before both the keychain delete and the presence-marker clear. This addresses the reported race.
The regression test was absent from this checkout, consistent with the existing test/** path-filter learning. I did not inspect or run it.

If you found this review helpful, would you consider giving us a shout-out on X?
@MouryB LGTM. I went through the OAuth flow (PKCE, state and nonce, loopback listener cleanup, the shared refresh future, the generation guard against sign-out races) and the BYOK paths still behave as before. All review threads are addressed, CI is green, and the device test covers the end-to-end flow.
Three small, non-blocking follow-ups:
"Reset all data" (forgetAll) clears the session locally but doesn't revoke it, although the refresh token and client id are still available at that point. A best-effort revoke before deleting, or a line in the reset dialog / PRIVACY.md saying to disconnect OpenStrap in ChatGPT settings, would close that.
final prefs =awaitSharedPreferences.getInstance();
for (final k in [_kClientId, _kHostId, _kPresent, _kWelcomed]) {
await prefs.remove(k);
}
});
notifyListeners();
}
In _refresh, if the keychain write of the rotated session fails, _session keeps the already-consumed refresh token, so the next refresh gets refresh_token_reused and signs the user out. Keeping next in memory even when persisting fails would avoid that. Rare, since a refresh only runs with a readable keychain.
// Signed out while the call was out: do not bring the session back, but
// the rotated token is the live one and [signOut] has to revoke it.
_rotatedAfterSignOut = next.refreshToken;
throwChatGptException('Signed out.');
}
try {
await_store(next, generation: generation);
} catch (_) {
// Signed out while it was writing: the rotated token is the live one.
if (generation != _generation) _rotatedAfterSignOut = next.refreshToken;
rethrow;
}
return next.accessToken;
AGENTS.md §1 lists network use as "OTA update pointers, opt-in telemetry/Crashlytics, and BYOK LLM calls". The OAuth calls to auth.openai.com are user-initiated and go to the user's chosen provider, so this is in the spirit of it, but adding the ChatGPT sign-in to that line would keep the doc accurate.
…rite fails
- forgetAll revokes the live refresh token (best effort) before forgetting
the registration it needs to do so
- _refresh keeps the rotated session in memory when persisting it fails, so
the spent refresh token is never reused
- AGENTS.md lists the ChatGPT sign-in's network calls
@DropTabl thanks for the careful review. All three follow-ups are fixed in f71cef9:
Reset revokes first.forgetAll now revokes the live refresh token, best effort, while the client id is still stored. If a refresh rotated the token mid-reset, it revokes the rotated one. The revoke call is shared with signOut through a new _revoke helper. A failed revoke doesn't block the reset.
Rotated token kept in memory. If the keychain write fails after a refresh, _refresh keeps next in memory and returns its access token, so the spent refresh token is never sent again. A sign-out during the write still parks the rotated token for revocation, as before.
AGENTS.md §1 now lists the ChatGPT sign-in's OAuth calls to auth.openai.com.
Tests: two new cases cover the reset revoke (revoke returns 200, and revoke returns 500 but the reset still clears everything). A new test covers the failed keychain write during refresh. The reset-during-refresh test now also expects the reset to revoke the rotated rt-2. I checked that these fail on the previous commit and pass now. flutter analyze is clean locally.
This PR was written with an AI coding assistant (Claude Code).
@MouryB thanks, f71cef9 covers all three: reset now revokes the latest token (including one rotated mid-refresh) before forgetting the registration, a failed keychain write keeps the rotated session in memory so the spent token is never sent again, and AGENTS.md §1 names the ChatGPT sign-in. Both new tests pin exactly those paths. Still LGTM.
The test workflow on f71cef9 is waiting for approval, so I ran the coach suites locally on this head: all 391 pass.
the sign-in trusted the id token's claims without checking its signature.
it is now verified as rs256 against the keys at the discovery document's
jwks_uri before sub/email are used. the keys are cached, an unknown kid
refetches once, and anything that can't be verified fails the sign-in.
reminders counted the coach as set up when either a byok key was stored or
chatgpt was configured, so switching to chatgpt and signing out left a
leftover api key keeping morning and evening briefings scheduled. on the
chatgpt route only the chatgpt sign-in counts now.
a code exchange that came back after sign-out, a reset or a cancelled
sign-in threw its tokens away, which left a live grant on the account with
nothing on the phone to revoke it. the same happened when the id token did
not check out. those tokens are revoked now, refresh and access both, using
the client id the exchange was made with since a reset deletes the saved
one. cancelling also stops an exchange that is already out from being
stored.
a refresh still out when the user signed out parked its rotated token for
the next sign-out to revoke. if they signed back in before it landed, that
token was parked for the new session, so its sign-out revoked the old
session's token and left the new one live. the stale refresh now revokes
its rotated tokens itself as soon as it lands, and a new session no longer
shares a refresh that an older one started.
the guide said plan usage sends data to openai exactly as an api key does,
which isn't something i can promise: these requests run under the user's
chatgpt account, so its data controls and training settings may apply.
the guide, the privacy policy and the in-app note now say that and point
at chatgpt settings, and the eligible plans are plus and pro.
openai documents the plan route as accepting function tools only when
they're grouped in a namespace or supplied through additional_tools, and
the coach sent them as bare top-level tools. on that route they now go
under one namespace, and function calls replayed from history carry it.
the api-key route is unchanged.

Reject ID tokens that list untrusted additional audiences.
The audience check at lib/coach/coach_chatgpt.dart:112-119 accepts any aud array that contains clientId, including arrays with other audiences. OpenID Connect Core §3.1.3.7 requires the client to reject an ID Token that contains additional audiences it does not trust. This client trusts no additional audience, so it must reject these tokens. the aud check I am leaving as it is. the id token only ever comes back from my own pkce code exchange, posted straight to the token endpoint over tls, and its signature is checked against the issuer's keys before the claims are read, so there is no front-channel token that could be swapped in from another client. tightening it to a single-element list could reject a legitimate token if the issuer ever adds an audience, which would break sign-in for everyone with no way to recover in the app. OIDC Core 3.1.3.7 lets the token-endpoint case lean on tls here.

@abdulsaheel Thanks for the updates. I checked the current source.
Reset: Confirmed. resetAllData() passes useChatGpt: false, model: '', and apiKey: '' to CoachConfig.save(). The save updates the mode and model in memory and preferences.
Guide: Confirmed. The opening of guides/AI_COACH.md now names both API-key setup and ChatGPT sign-in.
Audience validation: My recommendation to require a single-element aud list was too restrictive. OIDC explicitly permits multiple audiences. I also confirmed that signIn() takes the ID token from the PKCE code exchange and verifies its signature before calling chatGptIdentity().
One standards distinction remains: OIDC Core §3.1.3.7 allows TLS to replace signature verification in this flow. It does not waive the separate requirement to reject untrusted additional audiences or the recommendations concerning azp.
I acknowledge your decision to retain the current check. I will not press for the single-element restriction. The inspected code does not establish the front-channel token-substitution scenario behind that recommendation.

Report incomplete ChatGPT cleanup during reset.
ChatGptAuth.forgetAll() discards revocation status and suppresses secure-storage deletion errors. resetAllData() logs only thrown cleanup errors and returns only backupCleanupError. The reset screen therefore completes without telling the user that ChatGPT credentials may remain stored or unrevoked.
The sign-out UI and guides/AI_COACH.md already provide manual-disconnect guidance, but reset does not use it. Return cleanup status from forgetAll(), propagate it through resetAllData(), and show the same manual-disconnect guidance when cleanup is incomplete.

load runs in the background, so a reset right after launch saw no
session, deleted the keychain item and never revoked it; it now reads
the stored session first and does not call it revoked when it cannot.
a reset during a code exchange now waits for that exchange to revoke its
tokens and reports the result. the reset warning is translated and no
longer claims revocation failed when only the local delete did.

while the client id was being written did not see the exchange yet and
could report a clean wipe before it. the reset warning now says that
only disconnecting in chatgpt settings revokes access.

@coderabbitai two things: the three findings on ef5ce93 are fixed in 3ae4eca. and could you confirm or push back on the aud point from my earlier comment (the id token only arrives from my own pkce exchange straight to the token endpoint over tls, signature checked first, so i am keeping the contains check rather than risk rejecting a legitimate multi-audience token)?
@abdulsaheel Thanks for fixing the three findings in 3ae4eca4. I confirmed that the commit is present, but I did not independently verify all three fixes or run tests.
On aud: I agree with keeping support for multiple audiences. I disagree only with treating TLS and signature verification as a complete justification for the current check.
The current source confirms your flow:
The app exchanges the authorization code with its PKCE verifier.
The token endpoint uses HTTPS.
_jwks.verify(idToken) runs before chatGptIdentity().
chatGptIdentity() checks issuer, audience membership, nonce, and expiry.
This does not establish the front-channel token-substitution scenario behind my original recommendation. Requiring exactly one audience was too restrictive.
However, OIDC Core §3.1.3.7 separates token authenticity from audience validation:
Step 3 permits multiple audiences but requires rejection of additional audiences that the client does not trust.
Step 6 permits TLS server validation instead of signature verification for a token-endpoint ID token. It does not waive Step 3.
The current contains(clientId) check does not distinguish trusted additional audiences from untrusted ones. That is a standards gap, not evidence of an exploitable substitution in this flow. The concrete check is whether OpenAI’s documented audience contract establishes trust for those additional values.
Also, my earlier azp wording was too broad. Errata set 2 makes that validation extension-dependent; multiple audiences alone do not require azp.
I respect your decision to retain the check. I withdraw the single-audience recommendation, but I cannot confirm that membership alone satisfies the full audience-validation requirement.

Why
The AI coach only works with an API key today, so anyone who already pays for ChatGPT pays twice to use it. On Sept 29 OpenAI opened Sign in with ChatGPT to open-source apps: an app can register itself, with no client secret and no approval step, and run eligible Responses API requests on the user's own ChatGPT plan (docs). This PR adds that as a coach provider. It's the official route, not the unofficial one that reuses Codex CLI tokens. OpenAI's docs specifically say not to call ChatGPT's
backend-api.What users see
Before: AI settings list Ollama, LM Studio, OpenAI, Anthropic and OpenRouter. Every cloud option needs a base URL and an API key.
After: a ChatGPT option sits between the local and cloud presets. Picking it hides the base URL, API and key fields and shows Continue with ChatGPT. After sign-in:

The issued client id is saved and reused on later sign-ins, as OpenAI asks.127.0.0.1, as the docs require. The page opens withLaunchMode.inAppBrowserView(SFSafariViewController / Custom Tab) so the app stays in the foreground and the listener stays alive; on iOS the full Safari app would suspend us. There's a Cancel sign-in button, and leaving the screen cancels too, because the app gets no signal when the user just closes the browser.first_unlockaccessibility as the BYOK key, so a locked-phone background relaunch can still read them. Refresh is serialized so concurrent callers share one rotation. A dead refresh token signs the user out; a network or server error keeps the credentials.postChatsendsstream: trueandstore: false, buffers the SSE stream and passes theresponse.completedpayload to the existingCoachResponses.replyparser.systeminput items becomedeveloper(the route rejectssystem). Sampling params were already never sent on Responses. The fail-closed request size ceiling still applies.subscription_sharing_*codes become plain messages. Billing errors stop the request and never fall back to an API key. Signing out leaves the coach in ChatGPT mode, unconfigured, instead of quietly switching back to a saved key.CoachConfiggainsusesChatGpt, andconfigured,apiBase,apiandkeyUnreadablefollow it, so the existing consent prompts (ECG, briefing) seeapi.openai.comas a cloud endpoint. The BYOK settings stay untouched for switching back.…#chatgpt), so a plan turn never replays encrypted reasoning from an API-key turn on the same base.CustomTabsService<queries>entry, so Android 11+ finds a Custom Tab instead of falling back to a WebView.guides/AI_COACH.md, andPRIVACY.mdupdated.The ID token's issuer, audience, expiry and nonce are checked. The signature isn't: the token arrives straight from the token endpoint over TLS in a PKCE code exchange, which OIDC Core §3.1.3.7(6) allows. I can add JWKS verification with pointycastle if you'd rather have it.
