If you export a backup, reinstall or move to a new phone, and import it, every setting is gone: theme, language, units, clock format, notification choices, quiet hours, alarm schedule, AI coach provider and model, backup cadence, and the rest. A backup today is the database only, and settings live in SharedPreferences.

This PR makes a full export carry your settings and an import bring them back, with a test that fails if a new setting is ever left out.

What changes

  • Export. A full export (the manual export and auto-backup) writes every setting into a backup_prefs table in the copy only. The live database never gets that table.
  • What stays on the phone. Settings tied to this phone or this install are listed in kPrefsNotBackedUp, each with a reason:
    • the paired band's address and identity;
    • the install id and telemetry upload cursor;
    • the backup folder permission and auto-backup status;
    • alarm arm and confirm state for the old band (the alarm schedule itself does travel, and is armed through the normal path on the new band);
    • an unfinished workout draft, including private ones;
    • consent, which is asked again as a whole;
    • the AI coach server address, because a custom address can hold a key.
  • Secrets never travel. The coach API key, the ChatGPT sign-in and the Oura and Mi Band pairing keys stay in secure storage and are not in any export.
  • Bug reports and telemetry carry no settings. The support report and the health upload export with includePrefs: false.
  • Import.
    • On a fresh install, every carried setting comes back.
    • On a phone that's already set up, only settings that are missing are added, so your current choices win.
    • Importing the same backup twice changes nothing.
    • Theme, language, units and clock format apply right away, without a restart.
    • If the old phone had a coach API key, a ChatGPT sign-in or a custom coach server and this phone doesn't, the import summary says to enter it again. If the key can't be read in time, it isn't reported as missing.
    • A setting row that is malformed or has the wrong type is skipped, not applied; the summary says how many, and this phone keeps its own value for them.
    • An imported alarm schedule is reloaded and armed on the band through the normal path, and reminders are rescheduled.
  • Older backups without settings still import as before.

How I made sure nothing is left out

  • settings_audit_guard_test scans lib/ for every key the app writes to SharedPreferences and fails if a key is neither carried nor listed in kPrefsNotBackedUp with a reason. It also has its own hand-written lists of keys that must travel and keys that must not, so a wrong entry in the production list fails too.
  • It fails if any code writes a credential-looking key (api_key, secret, password, auth_token) to plain settings, and if a secure-storage owner isn't listed.
  • prefs_roundtrip_test exports every setting and checks it comes back equal on a fresh install, that device values win on an existing one, and that a second import changes nothing.
  • settings_complete_test covers backup cadence, consent, alarm state, the workout draft, the coach key (missing, unreadable, timed out, present) and the coach server.
  • settings_paths_test covers auto-backup, the support and telemetry exports, older backups and the live reload.

Tests

  • New and changed: 5 files under test/backup/ plus fixture updates in 5 existing export/import tests.
  • Full suite (flutter test, 2 workers) on 370f2b86: 7,060 passed, 28 skipped, 12 failed. None are from this PR. Eight ran on a cloud machine where the time zone can't be set (day_window_dst_test, band_step_spans_local_hour_test, luteal_flags_dst_test) or timed out once (ui2_revision_reload_test); all eight pass on my machine. The other four are below. 75ec46a2 only drops a duplicate Russian plural branch; the l10n and backup tests pass on it.
  • Known failures not from this PR: settings_report_l10n_test fails on main too, because reportContactLabel and reportContactHint are missing in es, fr, hi and zh.

Known limits

  • Translations. I machine-drafted the 6 new strings for the 7 non-English locales.
  • Files and other tables. This PR is settings only. Device-lab recordings, coach chat history and some user tables still don't travel; I can follow up if you want them.
  • Secrets need re-entry on the new phone by design.

Summary by Sourcery

Carry user settings safely through full backups while preserving device-local state and applying imported preferences immediately.

New Features:

  • Include SharedPreferences settings in full manual and automatic backups and restore them during import.
  • Report settings restored, skipped malformed values, and credentials or custom servers that require re-entry.

Bug Fixes:

  • Preserve existing device settings during imports while restoring only missing settings, making repeated imports idempotent.
  • Reload presentation, notification, reminder, coach, profile, and alarm state immediately after import without requiring an app restart.
  • Keep device-specific state, unfinished workouts, consent, secure credentials, and support or telemetry settings out of backups.

Enhancements:

  • Add explicit policies and audit coverage for backed-up, device-local, and secure-storage settings.
  • Restore alarm schedules through the normal arming path and maintain compatibility with older database-only backups.

Tests:

  • Add comprehensive backup round-trip, policy audit, malformed-value, secret handling, import-path, alarm, and live-reload tests.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Backups include eligible app settings by default. Restored settings are applied immediately, and import summaries show how many settings were restored.
    • Backup imports report credentials or custom server addresses that need to be entered again, along with settings that could not be restored. Notices are available in multiple languages.
    • Alarm schedules are included in backup restoration, while existing local schedule entries take precedence.
    • Restored settings refresh the app’s appearance, language, units, and clock format.
  • Privacy
    • API keys and custom server addresses are not included in backups. Diagnostic and health-report database exports exclude app preferences.

…gs them back

Export writes every setting into a backup_prefs table in the copy only; keys
that belong to this phone are listed in kPrefsNotBackedUp with a reason.
Auto-backup and manual export carry settings; telemetry and support exports
do not. Import restores all settings on a fresh install and only absent keys
otherwise, then reloads theme, language, units and clock format. Consent is
asked again as a whole. A coach key left in secure storage on the old phone is
reported for re-entry instead of being claimed present.
…he phone

Alarm arm/confirm state, the unfinished workout draft (private sessions
included), the step-recovery journal, the telemetry outbox and the paired
band's identity mirrors no longer travel; the alarm schedule itself is
restored and armed through the normal path. An install that is set up but
has no history is no longer treated as fresh, so an import fills only absent
settings there. A coach key that cannot be read is reported as unreadable, not
missing. The audit test now names the keys that must and must not travel
itself instead of reading the production list.
A custom address can carry an access key, so coach_base_url is no longer
exported. A non-default address on the old phone is reported after import so
the user can enter it again; the default OpenAI address asks for nothing.
… its own step

The alarm schedule now travels in a restore, so the corrupt-database salvage
saves it too. The settings reload after an import moves into
_adoptRestoredSettings, keeping importEdgeBackup short.

Walkthrough

Database backups can include eligible preferences and credential-status metadata. Imports restore preferences under install-specific rules, refresh active settings, and report restored or refused settings and re-entry requirements. Diagnostic and health-upload database copies exclude preferences.

Changes: Backup settings restoration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Backup payload and restore rules
lib/data/backup_extras.dart, lib/data/db.dart, lib/support/issue_report.dart, lib/telemetry/health_uploader.dart
Database exports can include eligible preferences and credential-status metadata. Imports restore eligible preferences under freshness and key-presence rules and preserve the local settings-import cursor. Restore handling includes alarm schedules. Issue reports and health uploads exclude preferences from their database copies.
Apply restored settings
lib/state/prefs.dart, lib/state/*, lib/app.dart, lib/notify/notification_relay.dart
AppState reloads preferences and related settings after import. Theme, locale, units, and clock-format controllers reload when the restoration signal fires. NotificationRelay adds a method to reload its persisted state.
Import outcome and localized notices
lib/ui2/onboarding/welcome.dart, lib/l10n/app_*.arb
Import outcomes include restored and refused preference counts and re-entry requirements. Import reports display these results with localized notices.

- Around line 11681-11685: Update the restore flow around _mergeFromDbFile,
restoreBackupPrefs, and setCursor to report that the database merge may have
committed even when preference restoration fails. Surface this partial result to

so a retry can attempt the remaining settings again.

Review comments at @lib/state/app_state.dart:

handling.

…ows, reminders

- Any import that brings alarm schedule rows reloads the schedule and re-arms
when connected, with or without settings.
- The old band's low-battery latch stays on the phone.
- A blank custom coach server counts as missing for the re-entry notice.
- The established-install check also counts user-edited tables.
- A ChatGPT sign-in on the old phone is reported for sign-in on the new one
(presence only; no tokens leave secure storage).
- A malformed settings row is skipped and reported instead of stopping the
restore; the rest of the settings still come back.
- Restored reminder choices are rescheduled right away.
- A restored value a controller cannot parse is logged and leaves the current
  value in place.
Theme, language, units and clock format are reloaded right after an import.
A backup row for one of them with a type the controller cannot read is no
longer written and counted as restored; it is skipped and shown in the import
report's skipped count, and the controller keeps the stored state.

On a phone that is already set up, settings it already has keep their values,
and the card can also show when nothing was imported; it now describes only the
skipped settings, in all 8 locales and the fallback.

Major · Stability & Availability · Quick win

Validate profile preference types before writing them.

If a backup contains local_profile_json as a valid bool row, a fresh install or an install without that key can store it. _loadProfile then throws during settings adoption, after the database merge. The stored value can also cause an initialization error on the next launch. Refuse rows whose types do not match the profile readers.

Extend the type validation in restoreBackupPrefs to cover profile preference
keys and their expected types from the profile readers, including
local_profile_json; refuse mismatched rows before calling _write while
preserving the existing handling for valid rows.

lib/data/backup_extras.dart:214-220
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Report the custom server when the destination stores the default URL.

If the source used a custom server and the destination saved the default URL, the import keeps the default and omits the re-entry notice. The user can continue with the wrong server without knowing the custom address was not restored.

Update the `coach_base_url` check in the `needs` detection logic so it also
reports the URL when the destination contains `CoachConfig.defaultBaseUrl`.
Preserve the existing behavior for missing or blank destination values, and only
apply this check when the source backup contains `coach_base_url`.
