fix(mobile): keep notification avatar sync from stalling - #2431
Conversation
On the XS Max the App Group held no notification-avatars folder at all, so the cache sync never reached its index write. Each render now times out after 10 s, the index is written before rendering and after each avatar, and the sync records per-avatar errors in status.json (or in the app's documents folder when the App Group can't be opened). must fall back to Paths.document when the App Group write fails, not only when
hostDir returns undefined. Catch the failure from the dir-based write, then
attempt the existing documents-folder write while preserving the outer error

Abort the timed-out render so it can't commit its PNG after a newer retry, and fall back to the documents folder when the App Group status write fails. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01JrtPca5pD72Gdx4CFkQdNi

iPhone XS Max: the avatars pass. This ran on a Release build of c28f9e8, paired over Tailscale. The app was kept open for about 30 s, and then a group reply and a Bot DM were pushed.
A separate finding, which doesn't block this PR: the small app icon badge at the avatar's bottom right is a blank white square. A plain notification from before this build also shows white where the app icon goes. I'm checking the built app's icon now. Generated by Claude Code |
The App Group status write could fail silently. Each sync now also writes Documents/notification-avatars-status.json with the resolved App Group root and any write error, and logs failures, so a device check can tell a sync that never ran from one that could not write. Why
The #2397 device check on an XS Max (Release build of main 9d0c4fb) delivered Communication Notifications with the right sender and
#channeltitle, but every avatar was blank. The App Group container had nonotification-avatars/folder at all. So the avatar cache sync never got as far as its index write: either one render never settled, or the store couldn't be opened, and nothing recorded which.Change outline
status.jsonnext to the index, with a timestamp and the error for each avatar that failed. If the App Group can't be opened, the status goes tonotification-avatars-status.jsonin the app's documents folder. The device tester can read either file withdevicectl.Verification
pnpm lintandpnpm typecheckpass. The avatar-cache tests pass (7), including two new ones: a render that never settles, and a store that can't be opened.status.jsonnames the cause.Special things to note
This is JS only and ships over OTA or a rebuild. If the status shows the generated-SVG Bot avatars failing to rasterize on iOS, a follow-up will render them another way.
