Why

A Bot's push notification shows only the app icon. In a group Channel it should show the Channel's picture, and in a DM the Bot's picture, the way chat apps do.

Change outline

Host (packages/core/src/push/delivery.ts)

  • Each Bot notification now carries data.sender (Bot name), data.group (Channel name, only for group Channels) and data.text (the body without the Bot name lead), plus mutableContent: true so the iOS extension runs. title/body are unchanged, so older app builds look the same.

App avatar cache (src/host/notification-avatars.ts, native-notification-avatars.ts)

  • Avatar URLs can't go in the push payload: Bot avatars need the device credential, and generated avatars are SVG. So while the app runs it renders every Bot avatar (uploaded with auth headers, or the generated SVG) and every group Channel picture to a 192px PNG through expo-image + expo-image-manipulator.
  • Files are notification-avatars/<host>/bot-<slug>.png and channel-<id>.png: in the App Group group.<bundleId> on iOS and in filesDir on Android. An index of signatures means it renders only what changed, and it removes avatars that are gone. Live roster updates that can't change an avatar don't trigger a sync.

Android (modules/conversation-notifications)

  • ConversationNotificationsService subclasses expo-notifications' NotificationsService and registers at a higher intent-filter priority. Only the presentation delegate changes. It takes Expo's built notification and recovers its builder (actions, channel, tap intent and badge stay as they were). Then it applies MessagingStyle with the Bot as a Person with its icon. For a group it sets the conversation title to #channel and the large icon to the Channel picture. On Android 11+ it also pushes a long-lived conversation shortcut, so the notification goes in the Conversations section.

iOS (targets/notification-service, via @bacons/apple-targets)

  • A Notification Service Extension builds an INSendMessageIntent: the sender is the Bot with its image, and for a group it adds speakableGroupName with the Channel image. It donates the intent and returns content.updating(from:).
  • app.config.js adds the App Group, the com.apple.developer.usernotifications.communication entitlement and NSUserActivityTypes: [INSendMessageIntent]. apple-targets also records the extension under extra.eas.build.experimental.ios.appExtensions for EAS signing.

Missing data or a missing avatar falls back to the stock notification or the system monogram.

Verification

  • pnpm lint, pnpm format:check and pnpm typecheck pass. Push delivery tests and the new avatar-cache tests pass (mobile: 941 passed).
  • expo prebuild --platform ios on Linux generates the NotificationService target. The extension gets bundle id <app>.notification-service, the App Group entitlement, and the main app gets the communication entitlement.
  • Not yet done: Kotlin/Swift compilation and on-device checks. Those need a Mac/Android build and go through the shared device QA lane.

Special things to note

  • Needs a new development build (a native module, an app extension and new entitlements). Reversible by revert. Blast radius: how push notifications look on both platforms; delivery itself is unchanged. EAS must sync the App Group and Communication Notifications capabilities for both bundle ids (dev and store). Review focus: the priority override of NotificationsService, and whether the group.<bundleId> naming matches what the Apple team wants.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Mobile push notifications now appear as native conversations on iOS and Android, including bot, channel, and group details.
    • Notifications support bot and channel avatars, conversation shortcuts, and communication-focused presentation.
    • Push payloads now include sender, group, and message information for richer notification experiences.
    • Added an app notification service extension; a new mobile app build is required.
  • Tests

    • Expanded coverage for notification avatars and push-delivery metadata.

The Host now sends the sender, group and text of each Bot notification and
marks it mutable. The app caches Bot and group Channel avatars as PNGs on disk.
Android re-styles the notification as a MessagingStyle conversation through a
NotificationsService subclass; iOS adds a Notification Service Extension that
turns it into a Communication Notification with INSendMessageIntent.

📝 Walkthrough

This change adds push metadata and native conversation-style notification handling for Android and iOS. It also adds mobile avatar generation, storage, and host roster synchronization.

Changes: Mobile Conversation Notifications

Layer / File(s) Summary
Push metadata and message composition
packages/core/src/push/delivery.ts, packages/core/test/push-delivery.test.ts, changes/2397-mobile-notification-avatars.md
Push payloads now include sender, group, and text metadata, and set mutable content. Message formatting separates generic text from recipient-specific body text. Tests check the new fields.
Avatar generation and synchronization
apps/mobile/src/host/notification-avatars.ts, apps/mobile/src/host/native-notification-avatars.ts, apps/mobile/src/host/host-session.ts, apps/mobile/test/notification-avatars.test.ts
The app generates and caches bot and channel avatars, stores rendered PNGs and an index, and synchronizes avatar changes for connected hosts. Tests cover generation, caching, removal, retries, and roster input changes.
Android conversation notifications
apps/mobile/modules/conversation-notifications/*, apps/mobile/modules/conversation-notifications/android/*, .github/workflows/verify.yml
A new Expo module restyles eligible notifications with Android messaging style, group metadata, cached avatars, and supported conversation shortcuts. It falls back to the superclass-built notification when styling is unavailable. The native CI command compiles the module.
iOS notification extension and target configuration
apps/mobile/targets/notification-service/*, apps/mobile/app.config.js, apps/mobile/app.json, apps/mobile/package.json, scripts/ci-plan.mjs, docs/agents/development-scripts.md
The notification service extension converts eligible push content into Communication Notifications and loads avatars from the shared container. App configuration adds the Apple targets plugin and sets bundle and application-group values. CI path rules classify Apple targets.

SDK 58 ships expo-notifications as a prebuilt AAR, so there is no
:expo-notifications Gradle project. Compile against the published artifact
when the project is absent, and compile the module's Kotlin in CI.

main fails header-tooltips.test.tsx since #2382 imported the primitive Tooltip
directly; this PR's workflow change runs the full suite, so it surfaced here.

test (shard 1) failed in packages/client/test/header-tooltips.test.tsx, and that failure is not from this PR. The test also fails on main: since #2382, release-notes-view.tsx imports the primitive Tooltip directly. The suite ran here because this PR changes verify.yml, which forces a full run. I merged main into this branch and ported a one-line fix that switches the import to ./ds/tooltip.js. Once main carries the same change, the fix does nothing.

Real device (iPhone XS Max), fail on the avatar. Release build of main 9d0c4fb, paired over Tailscale.

  • Pass: pushes arrive as Communication Notifications. The group reply shows sender "Xiaoce" with the title "#Review Room", in light and dark.
  • Fail: the avatar is a blank white square, both for the group reply and for a Bot DM.
Light Dark

Cause, from the device: the App Group container has only Library/ and Library/Caches/, with no notification-avatars/ directory. So the extension finds no image and iOS draws the placeholder. Entitlements on the app and the extension both include group.app.deepseekbot.mobile. syncOnce() writes the index even when renders fail, so the sync never reached write(). Most likely Image.loadAsync on the Bot's data:image/svg+xml avatar never settles in Release. That blocks every later entry, including the group avatar. This is inferred, not yet confirmed with logs.

Suggested fix:

  • Time out each render and count a timeout as a failure.
  • Rasterize Bot SVGs another way, or skip them.
  • Create the directory and index before rendering, and log each entry.
  • Send device auth headers if channel.avatar is a Host URL.

I'll recheck on the XS Max once a fix branch exists.

Follow-up: the avatars pass on the XS Max with #2431 (c28f9e8). The Bot DM shows Xiaoce's avatar. The group reply shows the green group avatar with the title "#Review Room". Both are correct in light and dark.

Android phone result: notifications arrive, but not with the #2397 style (Xiaomi, Android 16 / HyperOS 3, store variant from main bc93a7c, isolated QA Host)

Evidence: 2397-android-push/phone (commit cac9178): 1-shade-app-notifications-collapsed.png (cropped to this app's notifications) and notification-fields.md (fields of each notification from dumpsys).

The store app had battery saver set to "无限制" and autostart turned on. After that, HyperOS stopped freezing it, and the DM, the group channel reply and the secret_cli approval all raised a notification.

Each notification was posted by the FCM SDK itself, not by the app's own code:

Kind Expected Seen
Group channel reply Channel image, "#channel" title, Bot as the MessagingStyle sender, shown in Conversations Title "#QA Lounge", text "Lumi:…", BigTextStyle, no large icon, no shortcut, not in Conversations
DM Bot avatar BigTextStyle, no large icon
Approval Action buttons No actions

All of them have tag FCM-Notification. The likely cause is that the push payload carries an FCM notification block. When the app is in the background, Android shows that block directly, so the app's own notification code never runs. A data-only payload would reach the app's handler, but HyperOS drops data-only pushes while the app is frozen, so the fix probably needs both: a data-only payload, and a way to keep the app from being frozen (for example, a high-priority message).

Root cause of the default-style notifications (from reading main; no code changed)

  1. The feat(mobile): show Channel and Bot avatars in push notifications #2397 Android styling only runs when expo-notifications posts the notification itself. ConversationNotificationsService extends expo-notifications' NotificationsService and replaces only the presentation step. In expo-notifications 58.1.5, that step is reached only from FirebaseMessagingDelegate.onMessageReceived, which is also where the categoryId action buttons are added.
  2. Every push the Host sends has a top-level title and body (the code that builds messages in packages/core/src/push/delivery.ts). So Expo sends FCM a notification message. While the app is in the background, the Firebase SDK posts that message to the shade itself and never calls onMessageReceived. That matches the FCM-Notification:… tag seen on the phone. In the foreground the app's path would run, but that case rarely matters here.
  3. Suggested fix: for Android tokens, send a data-only message with no top-level title or body. Put the title in data.title, the text in data.message and the category in data.categoryId; these are keys that expo-notifications' NotificationData reads. Keep priority: high. iOS keeps the current title, body and mutableContent. Do not put the text in data.body: on Android, expo-notifications parses data.body as JSON.
  4. Separately, on HyperOS a frozen app (battery saver not set to unrestricted, autostart off) receives neither kind of message. That is not related to the styling issue.

The data-only change has not been verified on the phone yet. That needs a store build rebuilt and paired again, and a Host change to the payload.
