Overview

  • Expand dotenv values against the complete merged environment so references no longer depend on parsed key order.
  • Preserve more-specific dotenv file precedence and existing non-empty process.env overrides.
  • Add regression coverage for same-file forward references, values defined in .env.local, overridden values, and unresolved variables.

Manual Testing

  • bun run --filter wxt test env.test.ts --run
  • bun run --filter wxt test --run
  • bun run --filter wxt check
  • bunx prettier --check packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/env-utils.ts packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/__tests__/env.test.ts
  • git diff --check

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

loadEnv now expands variables against the complete set of parsed environment values and non-empty existing process.env values. Tests cover expansion from more-specific files, overridden values, and unresolved variables.

Changes

Environment variable expansion

Layer / File(s) Summary
Expand against the complete environment
packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/env-utils.ts, packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/__tests__/env.test.ts, packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/__tests__/fixtures/.env, packages/wxt/src/internal-utils/__tests__/fixtures/.env.local
loadEnv builds an expansion environment from parsed values and non-empty process.env values, then copies expanded values to process.env. Tests and fixtures cover references to values in more-specific files, overrides, and unresolved variables.

The test may fail on machines where MISSING is set, though this does not indicate a production behavior failure. Clear the variable in test setup; the remaining risk is limited.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Clear MISSING before the unresolved-reference test.

If the test process defines MISSING, loadEnv expands $MISSING to that value. The assertion on Line 78 then fails even though expansion works correctly. Delete process.env.MISSING in the test setup.
