Purpose

This PR adds OpenShift deployment support for the gateway, gateway operator, Platform API, API Portal, AI Workspace and event gateway. The gateway, event gateway, Platform API and API Portal Dockerfiles now make their writable paths group-owned by the root group (GID 0) with group permissions matching the owner, so the containers work with OpenShift's arbitrary user IDs and run as before on other platforms. Each Helm chart gains an optional openshift block, off by default, that renders OpenShift Routes with passthrough, edge or reencrypt TLS and validates the termination and target port at install time. The operator chart also gets configurable pod- and container-level security contexts, Route RBAC and gateway Routes when OpenShift support is on, and installs each Gateway API CRD only if no one else owns it. Smaller fixes: the API Portal chart adds the required portalId setting, the event gateway probes use the /api/admin/v1/health path, and the bundled advanced-ratelimit policy is bumped to v1.3.0.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds configurable OpenShift Routes across Helm charts, updates operator OpenShift detection and security-context settings, changes writable directory permissions in container images, validates an API Portal identifier, updates event gateway health probes, and advances the advanced rate-limit policy version.

Changes: OpenShift Routes

Layer / File(s) Summary
OpenShift detection and chart configuration
kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/templates/_helpers.tpl, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/templates/gateway-values-configmap.yaml, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/values.yaml, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/README.md
The operator validates openshift.enabled, detects the Route API in auto mode, conditionally adds Route permissions, and sets the gateway OpenShift value when it is absent. Operator documentation and Gateway API CRD guidance are updated.
Workspace and API Routes
kubernetes/helm/ai-workspace-ui-helm-chart/*, kubernetes/helm/ai-workspace-helm-chart/README.md, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/templates/route.yaml, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/values.yaml, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/README.md, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-helm-chart/README.md, kubernetes/helm/platform-api-helm-chart/*
The AI Workspace, API Portal, and Platform API charts add configurable Routes with TLS validation and optional metadata. Their documentation describes the Route settings.
Gateway and event gateway Routes
kubernetes/helm/gateway-helm-chart/*, kubernetes/helm/event-gateway-helm-chart/*
The gateway charts add management API, WebSub, and WebSocket Routes with configuration checks. The event gateway chart also changes the controller liveness and readiness probe paths to /api/admin/v1/health.

Runtime permissions and security contexts

Layer / File(s) Summary
Group-writable image paths
event-gateway/gateway-controller/Dockerfile, gateway/gateway-controller/Dockerfile, gateway/gateway-runtime/Dockerfile, platform-api/Dockerfile, portals/api-portal/Dockerfile
The images assign selected application, logs, data, and coverage paths to group 0 and grant group write permissions.
Operator and cleanup security contexts
kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/templates/_helpers.tpl, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/templates/deployment.yaml, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/templates/cleanupo-finalizer-job.yaml, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/values.yaml, kubernetes/helm/operator-helm-chart/README.md
The operator chart separates pod-level and container-level security contexts and renders configured contexts for the Deployment and cleanup Job. The Deployment sets KUBECACHEDIR to /tmp/kube-cache.

API Portal identifier

Layer / File(s) Summary
Portal ID validation and rendering
kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/templates/configmap.yaml, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/values.yaml, kubernetes/helm/api-portal-ui-helm-chart/README.md
The chart adds config.organization.portalId, rejects blank or whitespace-containing values, and emits the validated value as portal_id.

Advanced rate-limit policy version

Layer / File(s) Summary
Policy version update
gateway/build-manifest.yaml
The configured advanced-ratelimit policy version changes from v1.2.0 to v1.3.0.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7b110

The new OpenShift Routes are disabled by default. When enabled, a management Route can be set to accept plain HTTP and expose admin credentials. Re-encrypt and default passthrough Routes can also fail TLS verification. Address these issues, or accept them explicitly, before merging.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 7b110

Optional management Routes can permit unencrypted administrative traffic, exposing credentials and gateway control. Disabled defaults, HTTPS redirection, and authentication checks limit affected deployments. Operator upgrades retaining older configuration can also lose previously enforced container restrictions.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · observed: The new gateway and event-gateway management Routes permit Allow for insecure edge traffic. When operators enable this configuration and clients use HTTP, management credentials, tokens, and traffic can cross the external connection without encryption. An on-path attacker can capture reusable credentials; gateway credential replay obtains the configured management role over resources controlled by that controller. Authentication checks and the default Redirect policy reduce exposure but do not enforce encrypted transport for every supported configuration.
  • Medium · security · inferred: An operator upgrade retaining the old effective securityContext map, such as through Helm reuse-values behavior without supplying the new restrictions, can silently lose allowPrivilegeEscalation:false, capabilities.drop:[ALL], and readOnlyRootFilesystem:true. These were unconditional in the base template but now come solely from the supplied map. This weakens containment of a compromised operator unless admission independently restores or enforces the restrictions. Fresh installations using current defaults retain them; an affected deployed upgrade has not been demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A captured gateway management credential grants its configured role against the reached controller. Admin authority covers that controller's API lifecycle and other administrative resources, including certificate, subscription, and secret operations. The demonstrated boundary is the controller's managed resources; cross-release, cross-tenant, host, or Kubernetes-cluster compromise is not established. Event-gateway independently contains the same unsafe transport configuration.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The retained transport finding is introduced through new exposure, not through changes to authentication code. With an enabled Route set to Allow, an administrative HTTP request can expose Basic credentials or a Bearer token to an on-path observer. The captured authentication material can be replayed while valid; role authorization still limits resulting operations.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Both management Routes default to disabled and Redirect, and their guards reject absent authentication and the literal unhashed default password. Gateway authentication and role authorization remain active. These controls prevent default unauthenticated publication but do not protect credentials sent over HTTP after Allow is selected.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Current operator defaults retain a non-root identity, RuntimeDefault seccomp, disabled privilege escalation, dropped capabilities, and a read-only root filesystem. OpenShift enablement does not automatically select an admission-compatible UID; the documented deployment precondition is runAsUser:null or another SCC-approved UID. Rejected admission is not evidence that broader privileges are required.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make encrypted external transport an invariant for management Routes by rejecting Allow. Preserve operator sandbox restrictions when upgrading with retained legacy values, with explicit validation of the effective security context rather than reliance on fresh-install defaults.
