+# Vana product glossary
+
+The language used to distinguish a person's own data from an app's permission
+to use that data.
+
+## Language
+
+**Vana account**:
+The identity under which a person owns their data in Vana.
+
+**Owner**:
+The person whose data is held under their Vana account.
+
+**Account data**:
+The owner's data collected under their Vana account, regardless of whether
+Desktop, Web or CLI collected it.
+_Avoid_: Desktop data, CLI data when referring to ownership
+
+**App identity**:
+The identity of an app or agent requesting permission to use an owner's data.
+It is distinct from the owner's account, even when the same person controls both.
+
+**Grant**:
+An owner's approval for a particular app identity to access specified data.
+
+**Personal Server**:
+The service that holds an owner's data and makes it available through
+authorized access.
+_Avoid_: Desktop when referring to the server
+
+**Vana Storage**:
+Vana's cloud storage service for synced account data.
+
+**Local export**:
+A copy of collected data saved on a person's machine.
+It is distinct from the full set of their account data.
+
+**Owner access**:
+An owner's access to their own account data using their account identity.
+
+**App access**:
+An app or agent's access to an owner's data under a grant to its app identity.
+The owner and app remain distinct roles even when one person controls both.
