ubuntu-cuda.yml builds CUDATests but does not run them, because GitHub's hosted runners have no GPU. This adds a separate workflow that runs them on a simulated NVIDIA T4, so the CUDA backend's tests execute on every push and pull request.

The simulator is PantheonSim (https://github.com/pantheongpu/pantheonsim), an open-source GPU simulator that runs CUDA programs on the runner's CPU. It checks results, not speed, so a real GPU is still the final word.

What changes:

  • One new file, .github/workflows/ubuntu-cuda-simulated.yml. The existing workflows, matrices and action pins are untouched.
  • The job has contents: read only and uses no secrets. The setup action pulls packages from Ubuntu and NVIDIA.
  • The setup action sets CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE, which would stop CMakeLists.txt from picking up vcpkg, so the configure step names the vcpkg toolchain file.
  • The shared CUDA runtime is linked (-DCUDA_USE_STATIC_CUDA_RUNTIME=OFF), because the simulator stands in for the runtime at run time.

Result on my fork (Ubuntu 24.04, gcc-12, CUDA 12.6, simulated T4):

[doctest] test cases: 35 | 35 passed | 0 failed | 0 skipped
[doctest] assertions: 3168 | 3168 passed | 0 failed
Status: SUCCESS!

Run: https://github.com/saqibkh/CubbyFlow/actions/runs/38740675394
The job takes about 37 minutes, most of it the build and the simulated run. It runs in parallel with the existing jobs.

Not validated: speed, other GPU architectures, other CUDA versions, and anything that needs a physical device. If a 37-minute job is too long for every push, restricting it to pull requests, or running it on a schedule, is a one-line change. I'm happy to adjust.

I maintain PantheonSim, so please weigh this accordingly. If you would rather not depend on it, closing this is fine.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • Added automated validation on pushes to main and ci-simulated-gpu, and pull requests to main.
    • The workflow builds the project with CUDA enabled and runs the CUDA test suite in a simulated NVIDIA GPU environment.

ubuntu-cuda.yml builds CUDATests but skips running them, since GitHub's
runners have no GPU. This adds a separate workflow that runs them on a
simulated NVIDIA T4 (PantheonSim, an open-source GPU simulator that runs
CUDA programs on the runner's CPU), so the CUDA backend's tests execute on

existing workflows are untouched.

The simulator's action sets CMAKE_TOOLCHAIN_FILE, which would stop
CMakeLists.txt picking up vcpkg, so the vcpkg toolchain file is named in
the configure step. The shared CUDA runtime is linked, as the simulator
stands in for it at run time.

📝 Walkthrough

Adds a GitHub Actions workflow for pushes to main or ci-simulated-gpu and pull requests to main. It configures a simulated NVIDIA T4 environment, builds with CUDA enabled, and runs CUDATests.

Changes: Simulated CUDA CI

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configure, build, and test the CUDA workflow
.github/workflows/ubuntu-cuda-simulated.yml
Defines workflow triggers and read-only contents permission. Sets up Ubuntu 24.04, PantheonSim with an NVIDIA T4 and CUDA 12.6, GCC 12, and the vcpkg toolchain context. Configures and builds the project with CUDA enabled, then runs CUDATests.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to aa20d

The workflow is configured to build and run CUDATests. Its read-only checkout token exposes no private repository content or write capability, leaving no material merge-blocking risk.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to aa20d

The new test job has limited security impact: its repository token is read-only, the repository is public, and the workflow declares no secrets or publication steps. However, checkout credentials remain available to pull-request-controlled build and test code. The simulator also becomes a trusted CI dependency.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · observed: The additional pull-request job leaves checkout credentials available to repository-controlled configure, build, and test code. This repeats an existing CI exposure pattern in another execution environment, without demonstrating greater token authority. The two retained findings describe this same limited credential boundary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is the additional CI job, its workspace, and its read-only repository credential. Public repository visibility substantially limits the credential's incremental confidentiality value. The evidence does not establish write access, secret access, or a path into production or other tenants.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Both retained low-severity findings identify checkout credential availability. A pull-request author can influence build or test code that runs after checkout and can read the persisted credential. Later cleanup does not prevent access during execution. Existing CI already follows checkout with pull-request-controlled build execution, but this PR adds another instance.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The simulator setup action executes within the same job before repository-controlled build code. Its fixed commit constrains dependency selection, while contents: read constrains the declared GitHub token authority. The workflow comment asserting no token use is not an enforcement control, and the action's actual credential access was not verified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The workflow contains no explicit credential cleanup or cancellation handler and no declared cross-run cache or publication step. Credential cleanup after success, failure, or interruption depends on external action hooks and platform teardown, which were not verified. This is a lifecycle coverage gap, not evidence of credentials surviving runner disposal.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Set persist-credentials: false on checkout to avoid leaving Git credentials available to subsequent build and test commands. The visible workflow performs no later authenticated Git operation. This reduces credential availability but is not a sandbox against arbitrary third-party action behavior.

Disable checkout credential persistence as defense in depth.

Pull-request build and test code runs after checkout and can read the token stored in local Git configuration. This job grants only contents: read, and the repository is public, so the token cannot write to the repository or access workflow secrets. This is limited preventive hardening, not a material credential exposure.

No later step requires authenticated Git operations.
