Summary

SDK mutation strings such as "-", "none", and "null" could invoke CLI stdin or clearing behavior, while malformed runtime values could escape as JavaScript TypeErrors. Programmatic lifecycle operations now preserve literal data and reject invalid values before normalization or writes, with typed usage errors, field guidance, and changed: false. Reopen validates IDs, recurrence reasons and contract-declared options before trimming or state reads; a missing low-level recurrence reason cannot change a closed item before reporting a receipt error.

CLI adapters use public SDK input-policy helpers. JSON-derived fields stay literal, while explicit CLI flags retain clearing semantics and replace document defaults, including aliases and annotation collections. Policy survives template expansion, option normalization, stdin resolution, and per-item bulk cloning. Expanded template values receive the same runtime admission. Explicit literal policy remains authoritative when adapters compose it. Collections are cloned before policy registration and in fresh CLI bags; native SDK options are copied so caller arrays and bags cannot inherit another call's interpretation policy.

Two costly, unchanged process fixtures run in the existing serial validation cohort. Their assertions, deadlines, retries, and budgets remain intact. The native transaction-error control uses a real filesystem failure and verifies unchanged source storage. SDK guidance, public surface snapshots, and generated contracts/catalogs are updated.

Closes #1614. Closes #1606.

Delivery owners: pm-gh1614, pm-gh1606, and pm-serial-cold-gates, each closed and released with structured evidence, linked files/docs, and recorded passing tests. Only actively edited work was claimed.

Scope includes project-wide PM intake, release verification and evidence closeout alongside the SDK fixes. The tracker records and managed changelog receipt are part of that grouped delivery.

Project intake reuses canonical lineage: GH-1615 uses pm-42wr6g; pm-ogzvx6 records the next dependency cohort under the existing seven-day cooldown; pm-wftvem records schema-field recovery guidance. Release-health reminder pm-7zs0 retains its scheduled instant and now targets October29 after the October28 occurrence was serviced with verified publication evidence. Historical release/nightly reliability owners retain their scope. The metadata audit verifies 16 historical missing close reasons and 170 structured-field residuals. The 16 placeholder records remain explicitly owned by open pm-pj2isb; the completed pm-e9zh recovery is not represented as satisfying its old zero-missing-reason criterion.

  • Documentation update
  • CI/tooling change

Checklist

  • Build, typecheck, version, secret, and dependency advisory checks pass
  • Full source coverage is exactly 100/100/100/100 with zero uncovered counts
  • All required hosted static, SDK/CLI contract, graph, record-integrity, transport, and bounded mutation gates pass on the revised head
  • All 26 required GitHub checks pass on revised head 9583dc672c
  • Packed executor and supported-platform checks pass
  • Linked PM tests/files/docs and structured close evidence are recorded through pm
  • CHANGELOG.md is generated and checked using latest pm-changelog (2026.10.28)
  • Renewed full CodeRabbit review completed with no unresolved coding findings

Test evidence

  • Complete source run: 11,519 passed, 3 platform skips. Latest complete-source coverage has 67,386 lines, 54,886 branches, 14,662 functions and 71,278 statements covered. All 26 required contexts pass on 9583dc6, with correct publishers and no missing contexts.
  • All eight linked test groups pass. Refusal controls compare complete item/history inventories after invalid calls and permit valid retries. Direct SDK composition and real CLI controls cover literal values, mixed JSON/flag overrides, aliases, templates, bulk calls, annotation round trips, caller-array reuse, helper-result reuse, field-specific aliases and original-option-bag reuse.
  • Fresh packed candidate 2026.10.28 works in npm/Node24 and Bun through both public SDK entrypoints, both input-policy modes, explicit literal precedence, fourteen typed no-write refusals, and actual npx/bunx execution. The full nine-package executor smoke passes.
  • One unchanged Windows receipt fixture exceeded its existing 30-second deadline; a single rerun on the same commit passes without changing its assertions, timeout, or retry policy. Original failure evidence remains in CI history.
  • The earlier collection-isolation revision passed full local static requalification. For this recurrence revision, dependency, import-cost, schema, grammar, refusal, token, tracker and gate-registry checks pass; two qualified local transport samples exceed existing budgets and remain recorded under pm-bj7rq0, together with earlier failures and filesystem comparisons. Limits are unchanged. Exact-head hosted static and performance checks pass. DeepScan reports zero new issues and CodeFactor reports no issues/annotations for 9583dc6. Cubic's source review hit its monthly free line limit; its merge-commit check skips AI review. Sourcery's diff allowance and Greptile's trial are unavailable. These limitations are not review approval, and no paid features were enabled.
  • Fresh Sentry checks show zero unresolved issues and an indexed real command trace. Recent commands from this installation have matched starts/finishes and an empty physical/broker queue, with no missing error-code records. The separate rolling seven-day telemetry error rate is 6.04%, above the unchanged 6% release threshold; that operations verdict is a failure and is not represented as passing PR CI. GitHub security alerts and dependency advisories are clear.
  • The morning auto-release and independent published npm/npx/Bun/bunx, bin, and MCP checks pass for 2026.10.28. This PR integrates that release's main commit; its three delivery entries remain Unreleased for the next eligible daily cut. The once-per-UTC-day guard remains intact.

The renewed full CodeRabbit review finished on 9583dc6 with no unresolved coding threads. Its suggestion to split the PM census and package receipt is declined because those records are part of this grouped delivery. Its sandbox ESLint dependency installation timed out; repository ESLint and required hosted static checks pass independently.

Default programmatic lifecycle mutations to literal input so dash, none,
null and file-like strings retain their domain meaning. Expose SDK policy
helpers for command adapters, preserve explicit CLI stdin and clearing,
and keep decoded JSON literal across cloned mutation options.

Validate dynamic mutation operands and contract-declared option values
before normalization or writes. Return typed usage refusals with field
recovery and unchanged-state evidence, retaining valid priority numbers
and generic action repeatable normalization. Preserve native operational
failures through transaction previews with real filesystem controls.

Move two costly process fixtures into the existing serial validation
cohort without changing assertions, deadlines, retries or budgets. Update
SDK guidance, generated public/error contracts and regression coverage.
The complete source suite passes 11,518 tests at exact 100% coverage; linked
tests, npm/Bun consumers, nine-package executor smoke and bounded mutation
gates also pass.

Close and release the three delivery items with immutable structured
evidence, generate the changelog through pm-changelog, and record linked
GitHub intake, dependency cooldown and operational audit findings without
duplicating or reopening completed work.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • SDK create, update, append, and bulk-update inputs treat values such as "none", "null", and "-" as literal data. Use explicit unset or clear options to clear fields.
    • Added SDK helpers to choose CLI-style interpretation or preserve values as literal data.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid mutation values and identifiers now return actionable usage errors without writing changes.
    • Template-provided SDK values are preserved as literal data, and invalid values are rejected before changes are written.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified SDK input handling, validation, and differences from CLI behavior.
  • Tests
    • Added cold-transport and executable-refusal checks to serial validation.

The PR separates literal SDK mutation data from CLI sentinel handling and validates mutation inputs before processing. It also assigns two validation fixtures to serial execution and updates issue, project, and release records.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(sdk): preserve literal mutation data and typed refusals" matches the main change. The changeset makes SDK mutation strings such as "-", "none", and "null" literal data, and adds typed usage errors (invalid_argument_value, changed: false) for invalid runtime values. The title is specific and follows a conventional commit style, with no file lists or vague wording.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Direct issues: #1614 and #1606. Both are open, so both supply active requirements. No repository inspection tool was available. This verdict uses the whole-PR summary for merge base b5241ce to reviewed head 9583dc6, and the current PR description.

[#1614] Literal SDK mutation values:

  • src/sdk/runtime-input.ts applies literal handling to create, update, and append unless the resolved options are CLI mutation input. SDK calls do not decode CLI sentinels.
  • src/core/item/literal-mutation-input.ts records CLI and literal provenance, including per-field provenance. src/core/item/parse.ts preserves non-CLI mutation input as literal.
  • src/sdk/lifecycle/legacy-none-tokens.ts skips legacy none normalization for literal input.
  • src/sdk/lifecycle/create.ts, update.ts, update-many.ts, and src/sdk/structured-mutations.ts keep the policy through template expansion, stdin-token resolution, and per-row bulk options.
  • src/sdk/lifecycle/cli-input.ts, the CLI lifecycle adapters, and src/sdk/cli-contracts/registration-helpers.ts keep stdin, @file, and legacy clearing for CLI callers only. Native option arrays are copied so policy does not carry between calls.
  • Clearing in SDK tests now uses unset options. The focus-command and preview tests replace parent: "none" with unset: ["parent"].
  • tests/unit/sdk/lifecycle/literal-input.spec.ts covers sentinel round trips through create, update, and append, and checks that SDK calls do not read stdin. create-command.spec.ts checks that CLI none still unsets and that SDK none, null, and - remain literal.
The test summary names representative fields (assignee, description, comment, title). It does not show every string field. The policy is applied generically on the shared path, so this does not block the verdict.

[#1606] Typed runtime validation:

  • src/sdk/runtime/mutation-value-validation.ts validates string operands, option bags, item IDs, append values, reopen values, and native create and update values. A failure throws PmCliError with code invalid_argument_value, the field name, corrective guidance, an action example, and changed: false. Payload contents are not included.
  • Numeric estimatedMinutes is rejected with a typed error. Numeric title, id, and template values are rejected the same way.
  • Validation runs before normalization and before any write in runAppend, runUpdate, runReopen (runReopenUpdate validates the recurrence reason), and PmClient.append.
  • Tests in create-command.spec.ts, literal-input.spec.ts, the semantic-preview integration spec, and reopen.spec.ts assert the typed refusal, exit code 2, and unchanged task and history state.

Uncertainty: src/sdk/generated/generated-error-code-catalog-part-1.ts is excluded by the ignored_files rule for generated paths. It holds generated catalog metadata. The required behavior is implemented in the reviewed source files listed above, so this exclusion does not block the verdict. Hosted CI and renewed bot review are merge gates, not coding requirements.

Docstring coverage is 87.50% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 40 functions across 28 files. Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The SDK, CLI adapter, validation, documentation, public-surface, and test changes support [#1614] and [#1606]. The serial-cohort move for cli-transport-floor and refusal-closure-gate, the pm-serial-cold-gates record, and the semantic-preview ENAMETOOLONG test are test support for these issues and are accepted.

The diff still contains tracker, history, reminder, chore, and managed-extension records that do not implement or verify [#1614] or [#1606]. The PR description calls several of them intake, census, or owner bookkeeping for other work, including GH-1615, dependency maintenance, release reminders, and historical release and nightly reliability:

  • pm-0trehk: Nightly Reliability census (issue and history).
  • pm-42wr6g: consumer report intake Linked-test trust is keyed to the branch name, so tests linked on a feature branch are refused in CI, on main after merge, and in every clone #1615 (issue and history).
  • pm-7zs0: release reminder (reminder and history), including a delivery-reference edit to PR #1616.
  • pm-prrlce: release reliability census (issue and history).
  • pm-ogzvx6: dependency-maintenance chore (chore and history).
  • pm-wftvem: schema-field recovery issue (issue and history).
  • pm-e9zh: historical close-reason recovery (chore and history).
  • pm-pj2isb: placeholder close-reason owner record (chore and history). This was not listed in the previous assessment.
  • pm-bj7rq0: Windows and CLI-budget observations (issue and history). Added since the previous review.
  • pm-apjlc4: PR review-loop observations, with a project file association for scripts/reviews/pr-review-loop.mjs (task and history). Added since the previous review.
  • .agents/pm/extensions/.managed-extensions.json: timestamp and version change for pm-changelog.

Resolution

Remove these records and files from this pull request: pm-0trehk (issue and history), pm-42wr6g (issue and history), pm-7zs0 (reminder and history), pm-prrlce (issue and history), pm-ogzvx6 (chore and history), pm-wftvem (issue and history), pm-e9zh (chore and history), pm-pj2isb (chore and history), pm-bj7rq0 (issue and history), pm-apjlc4 (task and history), and .agents/pm/extensions/.managed-extensions.json. Reviewer's Guide

The PR changes mutation handling so programmatic SDK and decoded JSON values remain literal, while explicit CLI adapters retain stdin and legacy clear semantics; it also adds early typed runtime validation with no-write guarantees, broad regression coverage, serialized cold-gate fixtures, and regenerated public/contracts documentation and tracking artifacts.

Expand regression coverage and serialize expensive validation fixtures in the existing performance cohort.
  • Add end-to-end coverage for literal sentinel round trips, explicit unset, CLI stdin/legacy clearing, JSON literal values, typed refusals, and no-write guarantees.
  • Add a native filesystem failure transaction control that verifies the source inventory is unchanged.
  • Run transport-floor and refusal-closure fixtures serially while retaining their existing assertions, retries, deadlines, and budgets.
  • Regenerate public surface, contracts, error catalogs, changelog, and PM tracking evidence.

Assessment against linked issues

Issue Objective Addressed Explanation
#1606 Validate dynamically supplied positional operands and mutation option values at the SDK boundary before they reach internal normalization or mutation code. ✅
#1606 Reject invalid values with a typed usage error that identifies the offending operand or field, states the expected type, and provides corrective guidance without changing stored data. ✅
#1614 Make SDK mutation inputs literal by default: sentinel-like strings must not trigger stdin reads, file reads, or clearing, while CLI adapters retain their explicit sentinel behavior. ✅
#1614 Require explicit unset or clear options to remove SDK fields rather than interpreting magic strings such as "none" or "null" as clear directives. ✅
#1614 Add conformance coverage proving that every string field round-trips every CLI sentinel through create, update, and append, and that SDK calls do not read stdin. ❌ The new test checks several representative fields and sentinel spellings, and verifies that stdin is not read, but it does not cover every string field as required.

Comment thread src/sdk/lifecycle/create.ts Resolved
Transfer literal and CLI policy through template merging, shared stdin
resolution and per-item bulk option cloning. Keep template-backed native
values intact while retaining real CLI single and bulk alias behavior.

Validate direct operations regardless of their input-policy marker, and
validate expanded template defaults before further parsing. Keep canonical
SDK values strict, admit declared CLI alias string/array forms, and reject
malformed aliases with typed no-write usage errors. Reuse the shared typed
string assertion for explicit creation IDs.

Extend active-template, public-client and actual CLI controls with complete
unchanged item/history inventories. All 11,518 source tests pass at exact
100% coverage; npm/Node and Bun consumers verify both public entrypoints,
template expansion, CLI aliases and nine no-write refusal cases.

Record the review findings, failing controls, durable lessons, linked test
results and renewed structured closures through pm. Regenerate the
package-owned changelog as part of the reviewed delivery.

Comment thread src/cli/register-mutation.ts Resolved
Keep decoded document values literal without suppressing the clearing grammar
of explicit CLI overrides. Resolve aliases to logical fields, remove overridden
document defaults, and omit annotation snapshots when the corresponding CLI
collection is supplied. Transfer both literal and resolved-stdin provenance
through SDK option normalization and lifecycle composition.

Add real create/update CLI controls for none/null clearing, empty documents,
alias replacement, collections and full-item annotation round trips. Exercise
the same document conversion and mutation composition through instrumented SDK
source so compiled CLI children do not hide these branches from coverage.

Record pm-gh1614 verification, structured closure and released ownership through
the CLI. Regenerate CHANGELOG.md with the latest pm-changelog package.

Validation: all11519 complete-source tests pass;57 direct SDK/structured controls
and all3 linked groups pass. Fresh packed npm/Node24 and Bun installations pass
both public entrypoints, mixed JSON flags and9 typed no-write refusals; npx and
bunx execute the candidate. Typecheck, lint, AST, defect-evidence and secret
checks pass. Revised-head exact coverage, full static and hosted review remain
required merge gates without threshold or denominator changes.

Integrate current main b5241ce after the morning release advanced the package
and runtime manifests to 2026.10.28. Regenerate CHANGELOG.md through the latest
pm-changelog so the three SDK/test-runner delivery entries remain Unreleased
and the immutable published release keeps its original contents.

Update the existing release-health reminder reference through pm without
changing its scheduled instant or adding an occurrence. Record the renewed
review disposition and complete hosted source qualification in the canonical
tracker lineage.

Validation: prior SDK head passes all coverage shards and exact100/100/100/100
coverage; its only failed CI job detected the newly stale changelog. Fresh
2026.10.28 packed Node24/npm and Bun consumers pass both public entrypoints,
explicit literal precedence, mixed JSON overrides and9 typed no-write refusals.
Actual npx/bunx execution, package-generated changelog checks, tracker validation
and defect-evidence gates pass. Renewed exact-head checks and full review are
required before merge.

Comment thread src/core/item/literal-mutation-input.ts Resolved
Clone collection values before registering literal provenance and when a fresh
CLI option bag is created. Copy native SDK options before policy registration,
so neither caller arrays nor caller option bags retain another invocation's
interpretation policy. Explicit literal policy still survives adapter cloning.

Extend the existing native regression owner with caller-array, helper-result,
field-specific document and original-option-bag reuse controls. The unchanged
control fails before the fix by appending none instead of clearing comments.
Document collection ownership and verify both public SDK entrypoints in packed
Node24/npm and Bun consumers.

Reconcile the runner task's earlier11518-test and later11519-test snapshots and
record its completed exact-head hosted proof in an immutable closure event.
Record watcher/readiness and Windows timing observations under existing owners.
Service the October28 release-health occurrence with successful publication and
consumer evidence, retaining one next-day reminder and the UTC-day release guard.
Regenerate the changelog through the latest pm-changelog package.

Validation: all11519 source tests pass with exact100/100/100/100 coverage;294
focused tests, all linked SDK groups and packed source-bag controls pass. Full
static requalification passes every original gate, including transport floor,
graph, record integrity and bounded mutation. Earlier qualified timing failures
and controlled comparisons remain recorded; no budget, retry, assertion or
coverage denominator was relaxed. Final revised-head CI and full review remain
required before merge.

- Line 66: Verify the `missing_close_reason` criterion before treating this
completion record as finished: confirm `validate_metadata_missing_close_reason`
is zero, since the latest entry reports only the structured-field residual. If
the criterion is not met, keep the work open or assign an explicit owner; update
the completion record only to reflect verified results.

Review comments at @src/sdk/lifecycle/update.ts:
- Line 3541: Move the id validation from runUpdate into runUpdateWithContext,
before resolving transport options, so all callers—including
runReopenUpdate—validate the id and return invalid_argument_value for non-string
values.

Move update identifier admission into the shared update/reopen execution path so malformed low-level reopen IDs receive the same typed usage error as normal updates. Validate recurrence reasons and SDK-owned reopen option contracts before trimming, coercion or lifecycle reads, including generic client dispatch.

Reject a missing low-level recurrence reason before it can reopen a closed record and subsequently fail receipt validation. Extend the existing runtime refusal matrix and closed-state regression to compare authoritative item/history contents and prove that valid retries remain usable.

Record complete-source and packed npm/Bun qualification, four passing linked test groups, public SDK contract checks and structured closure evidence. Preserve qualified local transport timing failures under the existing startup owner and retain exact-head hosted checks as merge gates.

Verify the historical metadata residual against full live records and histories, assign the sixteen missing close reasons explicitly to the existing placeholder-recovery owner, and materialize the cohort relationships. Preserve the completed bounded recovery and all original historical outcomes. Generate and check the changelog through the latest pm-changelog package.

Validation: 11,519 source tests passed with three platform skips; exact 100/100/100/100 coverage; fourteen packed typed no-write controls on Node24/npm and Bun; npx/bunx execution; typecheck; SDK import costs; graph and record integrity; bounded mutation and credential checks. No coverage, transport, assertion, timeout or retry thresholds changed.
