Nx 24 removes the @nx/webpack:webpack, @nx/jest:jest and @nx/eslint:lint executors and the addPlugin generator option. This moves the workspace and the plugin to inferred targets, closely following the upstream @nx/node application generator.
applicationGenerator
normalizeOptions
+ outputPath = getForgeOutputPath(projectRoot) # shared with create-nodes
jsInitGenerator
webpackInitGenerator # registers @nx/webpack/plugin
addAppFiles # webpack.config.js with NxAppWebpackPlugin only
- addProject # explicit @nx/webpack:webpack build target+ addProject # build target only for esbuild- lintProjectGenerator(addPlugin, setParserOptionsProject)+ addLintingToProject(enableTypedLinting) # @nx/js/internal, like upstream
jest configurationGenerator # inferred via @nx/jest/plugin
+ addPassWithNoTests
Workspace:
ran the Nx 24 migrations, which also pin TypeScript 6 configs (ignoreDeprecations, strict: false, …)
lint, test and e2e are now inferred, with the same inputs (including jest.preset.js), outputs, caching and ci configuration as before
CommonJS Jest configs are now jest.config.cts, matching upstream
affected.legacy is not kept, so nx affected now selects individual tasks
Plugin:
generated apps always use inferred build, lint and test targets
setParserOptionsProject is renamed to enableTypedLinting, with the update-9-0-0-replace-set-parser-options-project migration for nx.json, project.json and package.json generator defaults
the nx peer is now >=24 <25, and @nx/devkit and @nx/js use ^24.0.1 ranges instead of exact versions, so workspaces aren't held to one Nx patch
@nx/eslint, @nx/jest and @nx/webpack are no longer dependencies. The generator loads them on demand at the workspace's Nx version, so it can't write mismatched @nx/* versions into the workspace (which made npm fail with ERESOLVE)
the app generator supports --unitTestRunner=vitest, set up with @nx/vitest like upstream @nx/node
the app generator keeps dependency versions the workspace already has, instead of bumping them
the plugin no longer prints [nx-forge] Processing … to stdout (now verbose-only), which broke nx show projects and --json output
the 2.3.0 and 3.0.0 migrations are removed; they target @toolsplus/nx-forge:build, which was removed in 7.0.0
Fixes found along the way:
@forge/manifest 13.7.0 added an exports map that blocks out/schema/manifest-schema.json. Fresh installs of the current plugin fail to load because of this. The schema now loads through the exported @forge/manifest/schema.json.
the app template pinned moduleResolution: node, which TypeScript 6 rejects (TS5107), so generated apps did not build. It now uses getTsConfigModuleResolution: node10 on TypeScript 5, where bundler with module: commonjs fails (TS5095), and bundler on TypeScript 6.
root Forge apps were built to dist/<name>/src, but the Forge targets read from dist}. One getForgeOutputPath is now used by both.
create-nx-workspace 24 fails to git add inside the ignored tmp/ directory, so the harness now passes --skipGit and pins the workspace version to NX_VERSION.
Repository:
commitlint now extends @commitlint/config-conventional and semantic-release uses the conventionalcommits preset, so chore: commits (including nx migrate's chore: [nx migration] ...) pass, and ! in a header marks a breaking change for both tools
updated @forge/manifest to 13.8.0, excluded from the minimum release age policy because it was published on 2026-10-26
the @forge/manifest/out/... type imports now use the package entry point
removed the format:check step, which ran no tasks because no project has that target
removed tools/tsconfig.tools.json, an unused config left over from workspace generators
AGENTS.md gets a code style section, and .scratch/ is git-ignored
Before:nx-forge:build fails on Nx 24 (TS2353: 'addPlugin' does not exist in type 'Schema'). In e2e, the generated app fails to load the plugin (Package subpath './out/schema/manifest-schema.json' is not defined by "exports") and then fails to build (TS5107: moduleResolution=node10 is deprecated). After:
nx run-many -t lint build test --skip-nx-cache: all pass (nx-forge 46 tests, docs-tools 8)
nx e2e nx-forge-e2e --testPathPatterns=application.generator.spec.ts: 4/4 pass, including build, package, lint and test of a generated app in a fresh Nx 24 workspace
commitlint over main..HEAD passes; the commit analyzer maps chore: to no release, feat!: and BREAKING CHANGE: to major and build(deps): to patch
not run locally: basic-setup.spec.ts (registers, deploys and installs a real Forge app); it is left to CI
New specs: create-nodes.spec.ts (root and nested output paths), generator specs for inference-only output, --rootProject, --linter=none, --enableTypedLinting and unitTestRunner: none, and the 9.0.0 migration spec.
Merge Danger
Door: one-way
The BREAKING CHANGE footer makes semantic-release publish @toolsplus/nx-forge@9.0.0 to npm on merge.
Blast Radius: consumers
Users must be on Nx 24.
Scripts that pass --setParserOptionsProject or --addPlugin to the app generator will fail schema validation.
Existing root-project Forge apps (never working before, because of the dist} path) should set the webpack outputPath to ./dist/src.
The 9.0.0 release notes are the first ones generated with the conventionalcommits preset, so their layout differs slightly from earlier releases.
Workspaces upgrading from plugin versions before 3.0.0 no longer get the 2.3.0 and 3.0.0 migrations.
8.x users stay affected by the @forge/manifest 13.7+ load failure unless the schema loading fix is also released on an 8.x line.
Updated setup and migration guidance for Nx 24 and upgrading from older plugin versions. A migration renames the typed-linting option in existing generator defaults.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
[#217] The Nx 24 upgrade is supported by the Nx 24 peer range, inferred targets, schema-loading and output-path fixes, migrations, and reported workspace and generated-app checks. [#212] Workspace and generated applications use inferred ESLint targets, and the public lint target remains available. The schema removes addPlugin, but the legacy test was deleted and no replacement test verifies the intended rejection or compatibility behavior for addPlugin: false. The evidence also does not establish that ESLint executor deprecation warnings are absent. [#213] Workspace Jest targets use inference, the configs use CommonJS .cts files, and the reported checks support the migration. The supplied evidence does not independently verify all preserved transform, coverage, and caching behavior.
Resolution
Add generator coverage for the intended addPlugin: false behavior, including schema rejection if that is the intended contract. Provide test or CI evidence that removed ESLint and Jest executor warnings do not occur. Verify the workspace Jest transforms, coverage outputs, and caching against the prior behavior.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The application-generator changes support [#217] and [#212], so they are not out of scope because [#213] excludes generator work. The PR also changes .agents/skills/**, .claude/settings.json, and .codex/config.toml. These changes do not implement Nx 24 support or the linked ESLint and Jest migrations. The ignored pnpm-lock.yaml is not evidence of an out-of-scope change.
Resolution
Remove the unrelated .agents/skills/**, .claude/settings.json, and .codex/config.toml changes from this pull request, or move them to separate pull requests.

@coderabbitai About the outside-diff comment on .agents/skills/monitor-ci/SKILL.md:276 (progress-tracking threshold of 13 polls): not changing this here. nx configure-ai-agents copies .agents/skills/ from nrwl/nx-ai-agents-config, and the next sync would overwrite a local edit, so the fix belongs upstream. The same applies to the other comments on .agents/skills/.
For best results, initiate chat on the files or code changes.

@tbinna Understood. I accept leaving .agents/skills/ unchanged in this PR because nx configure-ai-agents overwrites local edits. The threshold mismatch remains valid, but the correction belongs upstream in nrwl/nx-ai-agents-config. The same scope decision applies to my other comments on synchronized skill files.

This change removes the root-level instruction to review and verify work before an agent reports completion. The remaining Nx guidance explains how to run tasks, but it does not require verification. @coderabbitai About the unverified additional comment on AGENTS.md (restore the task-completion verification requirement): not restoring it. The maintainer trimmed AGENTS.md on purpose in this PR to keep it lean, and that includes removing this section.
Please review the latest commit 68aec12. It pins conventional-changelog-conventionalcommits to ^9.3.1, because version 10 needs conventional-changelog-writer 9, but semantic-release 25's release notes generator still uses writer 8. Also, your reply on the AGENTS.md task-completion item didn't come through. That section was removed on purpose to keep AGENTS.md lean. Can you confirm you're fine with leaving it out?

Migrate the workspace to Nx 24 and adapt the application generator to
Nx 24, which removes the `@nx/webpack:webpack`, `@nx/jest:jest` and
`@nx/eslint:lint` executors as well as the `addPlugin` generator option.
Workspace:
- run the Nx 24 migrations, including the TypeScript 6 config pins
- infer lint, test and e2e targets with `@nx/eslint/plugin` and
`@nx/jest/plugin`, preserving cache inputs, outputs and configurations
- rename the CommonJS Jest configs to `jest.config.cts`
- use task-level `nx affected` instead of the legacy project-level mode
- update the Nx agent skills
- lint commits with Conventional Commits and release with the
`conventionalcommits` preset, so that `chore` commits such as those
created by `nx migrate` are accepted
- remove the `format:check` CI step, which ran no tasks
- remove the unused `tools/tsconfig.tools.json` left from workspace
generators
Plugin:
- always generate inferred webpack, lint and test targets, following the
upstream `@nx/node` application generator
- replace the `setParserOptionsProject` application generator option with
`enableTypedLinting`, with a migration for existing generator defaults
- require Nx 24 as peer dependency and depend on `@nx/devkit` and `@nx/js`
with `^24.0.1` ranges, so that workspaces can use any Nx 24 patch version
- load `@nx/eslint`, `@nx/jest` and `@nx/webpack` on demand at the
workspace's Nx version instead of depending on them, so the generator
does not mix Nx versions in the workspace
- support Vitest as unit test runner of generated apps
- keep the versions of dependencies that the workspace already uses when
generating an app
- remove the 2.3.0 and 3.0.0 migrations, which target the build executor
removed in 7.0.0
Fixes:
- load the Forge manifest schema through the `@forge/manifest` exports
map, which 13.7.0 introduced and which broke loading the plugin, and
import manifest types from the package entry point
- update `@forge/manifest` to 13.8.0
- choose the module resolution of generated apps by TypeScript version,
as TypeScript 6 rejects `node10` and TypeScript 5 rejects `bundler`
together with `module: commonjs`
- build root Forge apps into the output path read by the Forge targets,
which pointed at `dist}`
- only log project graph processing with verbose logging, so it does not
break the output of `nx show`
- skip git initialization of e2e test workspaces and pin their Nx version
BREAKING CHANGE: requires Nx 24. The application generator no longer
supports the `addPlugin` option and always generates inferred targets. The
`setParserOptionsProject` option is replaced by `enableTypedLinting`.
Migrations for plugin versions before 7.0.0 are removed; upgrade through
an intermediate major version when coming from an older version.
Closes#217, closes#212, closes#213
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Please review the latest commit 35b8b9a. Since your last review, the application generator supports --unitTestRunner=vitest. @nx/eslint, @nx/jest and @nx/webpack are no longer dependencies; the generator loads them with ensurePackage at the workspace's Nx version. The tsconfig template leaves test-file excludes to the Jest and Vitest generators.
