📋 Summary

Customers without advanced hunting on device data cannot add the Microsoft Defender data source today. This affects Defender for Endpoint Plan 1, Defender for Business and Defender for Office 365-only tenants, plus least-privilege setups that grant only some permissions. The cause: the Alerts and Advanced hunting validation steps are required, and the device import (KQL on DeviceInfo) fails, as reported by a Plan 1 customer: Failed to resolve table or column expression named 'DeviceInfo'.

This PR makes each capability degrade on its own:

  • Config validation: every step is now optional. Each message names the missing permission or licence and what stops working. If every check fails, the message points at the tenant ID, client ID or secret.
  • Import: the 4 device import steps are optional, so the import completes with a warning when hunting is unavailable.
  • Readable errors: Graph streams share an error script. A missing device table explains that the licence has no advanced hunting on device data and points to Overview and Incidents; a 403 says to grant the missing permission and keeps Graph's message naming the role; a 401 points at the credentials.
  • Data stream descriptions name the permission or licence each stream needs.
  • Dashboards, reorganised by capability:
    • Top level, works on any licence: Overview (new, replaces Cockpit: Secure Score, active incidents, active alerts by severity / service / category, list of active high severity alerts) and Incidents (unchanged).
    • Advanced Hunting folder: Threat Detections (the 8 hunting tiles from Cockpit), Devices Health (now also has Device Exposure State from Cockpit), and the 3 device pages (Device Status, Vulnerabilities, Recommendations).
  • Alerts data stream: adds the serviceSource column ("Service Source"), and fixes the "New" status filter, which sent newAlert (rejected by Graph as an invalid enumeration value) instead of new. Tiles already saved with newAlert are mapped to new.
  • README: a capability / permission / licence table, guidance to grant only the Defender permissions, troubleshooting for warnings, and fixes for REVIEW.md issues.
  • Fixes on the moved Current Score % tile: it had a scope pinned to a node from the authoring tenant, and its scalar pointed at a column the SQL doesn't return.
  • Version 1.0.4 → 1.1.0. Authentication is unchanged from 1.0.4 (built-in OAuth2).

Held back: vulnerability data without advanced hunting (a Vulnerability Exposures stream on the Defender for Endpoint API, its dashboard and setup check). It needs a second API token, which this PR obtained with a pre-request script; that approach won't be approved until the platform supports it. It was built and tested in ae06cee…e944a71 and removed in b00b609; reverting that commit restores it.

🧪 Testing

Live testing on a Defender tenant with 82 devices (Les Bleus DEV), with credentials that pass on 1.0.4:

  • Upgrade in place (1.0.4 deployed with --suffix upg, data source and custom dashboard created, then 1.1.0 deployed over it): same plugin and data source IDs; the custom Alerts and Devices tiles match the baseline; re-index returns 82 devices; Advanced Hunting dashboards work.

  • Overview alert tiles failed on newAlert, fixed in 424e21b.

  • Graph error script verified on the live platform: a query on a missing device table returns the readable message; a valid hunting query still returns data.

  • Since b00b609 the authentication config is byte-for-byte the 1.0.4 one.

  • CI validate and deploy pass (including the Advanced Hunting folder name with a space)

  • Existing 1.0.4 data source upgraded in place keeps working without being edited

  • Overview alert tiles render without errors, and serviceSource is returned by alerts_v2

  • Re-check on b00b609: fresh data source, checks, import, Overview and Advanced Hunting dashboards

  • Tenant without advanced hunting (or app without ThreatHunting.Read.All): hunting check is a warning, data source saves, import completes with no devices, Overview and Incidents render, hunting tiles show the readable message

  • App with only ThreatHunting.Read.All (least-privilege case): data source saves, Advanced Hunting dashboards render

  • Wrong client secret: every check shows a warning that mentions credentials

⚠️ Breaking changes

Does this PR introduce any breaking changes?

  • No

Out-of-the-box dashboards change (Cockpit is replaced by Overview, and the hunting dashboards move into an Advanced Hunting folder). OOB dashboards are updated on upgrade and customer-created dashboards are not touched, so nothing customers built breaks. No data stream is removed or renamed, and authentication is unchanged.

One behaviour change: a wrong client secret no longer blocks saving the data source. It shows a warning on every check instead.

Tenants without advanced hunting on device data (Defender for Endpoint
Plan 1, Defender for Business, Defender for Office 365 only) and tenants
that grant only some permissions could not add the data source, because
the alerts and advanced hunting validation steps were required and the
device import failed.

- Make every config validation step optional, with messages that name
the missing permission or licence and what stops working
- Mark the device import steps optional so the import still completes
- Replace Cockpit with an Overview dashboard that works on any licence:
Secure Score, active incidents and active alerts
- Move every dashboard that needs advanced hunting into an Advanced
Hunting folder, including a new Threat Detections dashboard built from
  the Cockpit hunting tiles
- Add the Service Source column to the Alerts data stream
- Document which permission and licence each capability needs

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to b6587

The change lets Defender data sources authenticate separately for Graph and Defender for Endpoint and work with partial permissions. No concrete defect was established in the reviewed files. The one remaining uncertainty is that the new token host has not been shown to work in the deployed environment. The author's remaining live-tenant checks should cover this before release.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1d36d

The update supports partial-capability setups without increasing the application's declared permissions or changing its authentication model. Existing registration guidance can still lead administrators to grant broader access than Defender needs; no PR-specific increase in that exposure was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — If an administrator follows the linked guide's broader permission list and consents directory or SharePoint read access, misuse of that application's credentials can expose tenant data beyond Defender. The relevant scope follows the application's consented grants, not the dashboards selected in the plugin. This grant route already exists in the base documentation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Both retained findings concern README line 19 directing administrators to the generic Microsoft 365 registration guide. Supplied verification identifies permissions including Directory.Read.All and Sites.Read.All in that guide. The README's instruction to grant only selected permissions is meaningful counterevidence, but does not explicitly replace the guide's permission list. The findings remain relevant without establishing a PR-introduced authority expansion.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — Capability validation probes Graph reads or a DeviceInfo hunting query. Making those probes optional relaxes onboarding acceptance, not token issuance or Graph permission enforcement. A missing capability can produce warnings, but the inspected change supplies no mechanism to obtain data without the application's corresponding authority.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use Defender-specific registration guidance that explicitly substitutes selected capability permissions for the generic guide's permission list. Include guidance for reviewing and removing unnecessary existing grants while accounting for applications shared with other integrations.

Vulnerability data was only reachable through advanced hunting, so
Defender for Business and least-privilege customers could not see it.
The Defender for Endpoint API serves it with Vulnerability.Read.All, but
needs a token for its own audience, separate from the Graph token.

- Add a pre-request script that reroutes "mde/" endpoint paths to the
Defender for Endpoint API and authenticates them with a second client
credentials token, cached in state. Graph requests are untouched.
- Add the unscoped Vulnerability Exposures data stream, with a server
  side severity filter
- Add an optional vulnerability management validation step
- Add a Vulnerability Exposure dashboard
- Document the WindowsDefenderATP permission and licence

Live testing showed every Graph request failing once the pre-request
script was added, with the same credentials that work on 1.0.4. The
script returned early for Graph requests, which likely left the platform
without the request's url and headers.

The script now always runs to the end and issues both tokens itself
(authMode none, the pattern the other script-authenticated plugins use),
which also removes any dependency on whether the built-in OAuth2 header
is added before or after the script.

Live testing showed the platform blocks the pre-request script from
fetching login.microsoftonline.com ("not allowed by this data source").
login.microsoft.com is an official Entra ID alias of that authority for
the public cloud, and shares the microsoft.com domain with the Graph
base URL, which is the pattern the Redstor plugin relies on to reach its
token host.

…lity errors

Live testing on an upgraded data source found:

- The Alerts stream's "New" status option sent 'newAlert', which Graph
rejects ("not a valid enumeration type constant"), so any tile
filtering on it failed, including the new Overview tiles. The option
now sends 'new', and saved tiles that still send 'newAlert' are mapped
  to 'new'.
- Data sources keep the settings they were saved with, so one added on
1.0.4 has no pre-request script and its "mde/" requests reach Graph.
Vulnerability streams now explain how to fix that (save the data
source), and name the missing permission on a 401 or 403.

… critical

On a 49-device test tenant, critical and high exposures came to 27,550
rows: four Defender for Endpoint API pages per tile, with seven tiles
loading at once. Tiles took minutes and several failed. Critical alone
is about 3,000 rows, a single page, so every tile now asks for critical
exposures only. The data stream still accepts any severity.

…h errors

- Data stream descriptions now name the permission or licence each
stream needs, so users see it in the stream picker before a tile fails.
- Graph streams share an error script that turns common failures into
plain guidance. A missing device table (as reported by a Plan 1
customer: "Failed to resolve table or column expression named
'DeviceInfo'") explains that the licence has no advanced hunting on
device data; a 403 says to grant the missing permission and keeps
Graph's message, which names the role; a 401 points at the
  credentials.

…ced hunting

The second API token for the Defender for Endpoint API relied on a
pre-request script, which won't be approved until the platform supports
that case. This release goes out without it:

- Remove preRequest.js and restore the built-in OAuth2 configuration
from 1.0.4, so existing data sources need no re-save.
- Remove the Vulnerability Exposures data stream, its validation step
and error script, and the Vulnerability Exposure dashboard.
- Remove the WindowsDefenderATP permission guidance from the README.

Everything else in 1.1.0 stays. Reverting this commit restores the
feature once the platform is ready.
