Background requests for bulk retry, export and bring - #403
Long tasks run on the server and show in the top bar with progress, Cancel and Open/Download. They no longer hit the 30 s limit; every other request is unchanged.
Bulk retry: one server job, up to 500,000, paced at 1,000 waiting in the pipeline, saves every 100, clean cancel.
Export: up to 50,000, built in the background, downloaded through a signed 10-minute link.
Bring from prod (list and apply) runs in the background.
Live updates over SignalR (/api/background/hub), with polling as a fallback. Needs WebSockets through the proxy (see deployment.md).
New table BackgroundRequests (migration for PgSql, MsSql, MySql).
Tested locally on 1M exchanges: 466k retry preview in 5 s, 413k handled in ~6 min with flat memory, 50k export in 9 s.

when RetryOne succeeds; keep skipped or already-retried targets out of batch
before RetriesOf(batch) collects unfinished work.

Summary
Summary
Adds background execution for bulk retry, exchange export, and production-list/apply requests. The API supports progress, cancellation, retained results, and SignalR updates, with client polling as a fallback.
Raises the bulk-retry selection limit to 500,000 and the background export limit to 50,000. Bulk retry saves progress in batches and limits queued work.
Adds background-request persistence and migrations for PostgreSQL, SQL Server, and MySQL. Updates the admin UI and API documentation.
Risk: risk:high. The change adds shared middleware, background execution, cancellation, cross-node messaging, and persisted request state.
Security-sensitive areas: Request ownership checks protect listing, results, and cancellation. File downloads use expiring signed links on an anonymous endpoint. The hub uses authorization and query-string token handling. Verify signing-key configuration, access controls, and proxy log handling for tokens and signed links.
Test coverage impact: Adds HTTP and integration tests for background lifecycle, cancellation, ownership, cross-node updates, downloads, and bulk retry limits. Test execution results were not provided.
Deployment and operations: Apply the new database migrations for each supported provider. Configure a stable Token:Key for signed download links. Proxies should support WebSockets for SignalR; polling is the fallback. Review rollback procedures for the new table and background work that may still be active during deployment or rollback.
The change adds API and admin UI support for asynchronous background requests, including persisted status, progress, results, cancellation, and notifications. Bulk retries and exchange exports now use background processing with updated limits and progress reporting.
Changes: Background request lifecycle
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Request lifecycle and persistence SW.Bitween.Api/Domain/BackgroundRequest.cs, SW.Bitween.Api/Services/Background/*, SW.Bitween.Api/Data/BitweenDbContext.cs, SW.Bitween.*Sql/Migrations/*
The API adds a persisted request model and service for isolated execution, progress, result storage, cancellation, and concurrency limits. Database mappings and migrations add the request table.
The API adds asynchronous request handling, owner-scoped status, result, and cancellation endpoints, signed file links, and SignalR notifications. HTTP tests cover lifecycle and access behavior.
The client tracks background requests through SignalR or polling and displays status, progress, cancellation, and completion actions. Mirror requests can continue in the background, and the bring dialog uses its URL query parameter for open state.
Retry planning supports selections up to 500,000 and reports total skip and substitution counts while listing up to 1,000 entries of each. Background retries save batches, report progress, check cancellation, and limit outstanding work.
Retry UI and validation SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/exchanges/ExchangesPage.tsx, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/exchanges/shared.tsx, SW.Bitween.IntegrationTests/Tests/BulkRetryInBackgroundTests.cs, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/exchanges/__tests__/ExchangesList.test.tsx, docs/retries-and-alerts.md, docs/api-reference.md
The UI submits the full retry selection in one request and displays progress and partial completion. Integration and UI tests cover direct limits, background processing, cancellation, and pipeline throttling.
Exchange exports
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Background export creation and download SW.Bitween.Api/Controllers/XchangeExportController.cs, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/client.ts, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/api/http/exchanges.ts, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/exchanges/ExchangesPage.tsx
Exports use a 50,000-exchange background limit and a 1 GiB ZIP cap. The client requests a background export and follows the returned file URL.
Export tests and API documentation SW.Bitween.HttpTests/BackgroundRequestTests.cs, SW.Bitween.Web/ClientApp/src/pages/exchanges/__tests__/ExchangesList.test.tsx, docs/api-reference.md
Tests cover stored exports and signed download links. The API reference describes direct and background export limits and ZIP size handling.
Resolve the session-state leak, unfinished background failures, and premature export downloads before merging. Cancellation and reopening can also lose results, while retention and processing limits are not consistently enforced.

Keep server-deleted running rows from staying Running forever.
refreshBackground merges response rows into the existing state and never drops an ID that the response omits. ForgetExpiredAsync deletes any request that started more than a day ago, whatever its status. When that request later reports progress or saves its answer, Progressed and SaveAsync return on a null row without calling NotifyAsync. The header keeps the row as Running. carriedOn waiters for that ID never resolve, because publish wakes only IDs that are still in state. A page reload discards those waiters but does not resolve them.
Do not fix this by dropping every ID that the capped list omits. List orders by StartedOn and applies Take(20), so it can omit a running row that is still active. The server needs to send a terminal signal for a running row that it deletes or stops. The client must also settle the waiters of any running row before it drops that row.
The failing case is latent. It needs a request that reports progress for more than a day, and then a later request that triggers cleanup.

Correct the export/check summary. It does not match direct export.
Check validates against MaxInBackground (50,000). A direct Post without a background scope refuses above Limit (500). The summary above Check says it refuses what the export would refuse, which is false for direct export. Name the background export in the summary.

SW.Bitween.Api/Resources/Xchanges/XchangeSelection.cs:52-53 Minor · Performance & Scalability · Quick win
Bound the refusal count to avoid large scans.
When a filter exceeds the limit, XchangeSelection.Count visits up to limit * 10 + 1 matching rows before the request is refused. For background retry, that is 5,000,001 rows, previously 10,001. The extra scan adds database load and can hit the command timeout, which replaces TOO_MANY with an error. Lower the cap, or report the count as a lower bound.

Wait for the export to finish before requesting its link.
The mock returns a link while the export is still Running. Production returns 409 BACKGROUND_NO_FILE for that state. exportExchangeFiles requests the link immediately after the export starts, so Export files fails and the test still passes. Refuse the link in the mock until Done. Make exportExchangeFiles wait for Done before it calls linkToBackgroundFile.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Enforce the ZIP size cap on the bytes actually written, not on raw exchange sizes.
The loop checks body.Written > MaxBytes only before each exchange (XchangeExportController.cs:148-153). Add then copies the whole exchange with file.CopyToAsync(into, aborted) (XchangeExportController.cs:224) and does not check the remaining budget. An exchange that starts just below MaxBytes can therefore push the archive past the cap by up to that exchange's stored size. missing.txt and the central directory are written after the last check, so their bytes are not checked either.
The cap must hold for the bytes that reach the response. Account for the following:
Measure each entry's stored size, not InputSize, OutputSize, or ResponseSize. Those values are raw lengths of the source data.
Reserve space for missing.txt and for central-directory finalization before writing an entry.
When an entry does not fit, stop at the entry boundary and record the remaining exchanges as missing.
Either produce a valid archive within MaxBytes, or refuse the export with an explicit size error. Do not serve an oversized archive or a truncated archive with corrupt ZIP structure.

lines 148 - 153:
Update the export loop using body.Written and missing so the MaxBytes limit
accounts for actual ZIP bytes, including each entry’s stored size and reserved
space for missing.txt and central-directory finalization. Before writing an
entry, ensure it fits; otherwise stop at the entry boundary and record the
remaining exchanges as missing. Ensure the response is either a valid archive
within MaxBytes or an explicit size error, never an oversized or truncated
archive.

Leaving as is: the cap is a soft stop between exchanges, documented as stopping past 1 GB. It can go over by at most one exchange, and the zip stays valid.
Record committed retries when a bulk retry fails mid-run.
When a batch save commits and a later step throws, Record(...) never runs, so the committed retries have no BulkRetry audit row. If the caller is still waiting, the failure returns a bare 500 with no partial result. The stored progress summary covers only background requests that have already moved.

Ensure the BulkRetry flow records its committed retry count if a later step
throws before the existing Record call runs. Add the audit recording to the
failure path using the accumulated retry progress, and prevent duplicate
BulkRetry records when the normal completion path already records it.

Leaving as is for now: it's listed in docs/caveats.md. Recording it after a mid-run failure needs a fresh DbContext, since the one in use may be the thing that failed or was cancelled.
Bounding the over-limit count: leaving it. It only runs when a selection is already over the limit, in the background with its 10-minute limit; 550,000 matching rows took about 5 s locally.
Running rows deleted after a day: leaving it. It needs one request running for over a day, which the 10-minute limit between progress reports makes unlikely in practice.

Long tasks run on the server and show in the top bar with progress, Cancel and Open/Download. They no longer hit the 30 s limit; every other request is unchanged.
