A seed-based generative system for self-rendering compositions.
A reproducible catalogue of computational textile compositions.
Source is a generative design system that draws its own code. The sketch holds its source as an array of strings, then renders them — monospace, white, line by line — over a background of twelve mirrored wild ellipses and a hundred and twenty layered radial glows. The code is legible but not meant to be read; it's the piece's signature, its structure, and its texture at once.
Every artwork in this catalogue is defined by a single numeric seed. The same seed always produces the identical composition — making each piece traceable, reproducible, and licensable across textile, print, and apparel applications.
Named for the source code that the sketch reads, holds, and renders — its own — Source translates that self-reference into an image.
The generator combines three layers:
| Layer | Description |
|---|---|
| Ellipses | Twelve wild ellipses in mirror pairs — one at a random position, a second reflected through the centre. |
| Glow | A hundred and twenty radial ellipses accumulating from the centre out, each at low alpha. |
| Code | The sketch's own source, rendered as monospace text on top of both. |
All three layers are driven by the same seed, ensuring deterministic output.
- Background — random hue, low saturation (20–50%), low brightness (10–30%)
- Ellipses — 12 strokes, mirrored, with random width and height
- Glow layers — 120 fills, radius from 5% to 50% of canvas
- Text — monospace at 1.2% of canvas, white, line-height 1.6% of canvas
- Line count — 47 source lines

The entire project is contained in a single index.html — no build step, no framework. Open it in any modern browser.
- Seed-based generation — every composition is deterministic and reproducible
- Self-rendering code — the sketch draws its own source as monospace text
- Two noise layers — mirrored ellipses and a radial glow stack beneath the text
- Live catalogue — cover, plate, surfaces, process, archive, commission sections
- Multiple surfaces — print, scarf, textile, wallpaper — all rendered from the same seed
- Archive of 8 seeds — click any plate to load it into the main view
- PNG export — download any composition directly from the browser
- Keyboard shortcuts —

Each composition is drawn in HSB and every layer takes its own path through the spectrum:
| Element | Range |
|---|---|
| Background | Full-spectrum hue, 20–50% saturation, 10–30% brightness |
| Ellipses | Full-spectrum hue, 50–100% saturation, 50–100% brightness, 100–200 alpha |
| Glow | Full-spectrum hue, 50–100% saturation, 70–100% brightness, 10–30 alpha |
| Text | Pure white |
The result reads as a luminous field of colour marks beneath a pale grid of type — the code acts as both subject and surface.
- p5.js 1.9.0 (CDN) for canvas rendering
- Custom seeded random generator for deterministic output
- HSB colour mode, per-instance
- Text rendered with p5's native text functions at tile-relative sizing
- Ellipses drawn in mirror pairs — one reflected through the canvas centre
- Radial glow accumulates in layers rather than a single gradient
- Rectangular surfaces tile the square composition to fill aspect ratio
Source is a project by Reyhaneh Daneshdoost — an Iranian-born artist working at the intersection of classical textile logic and generative systems.
The work begins with a simple observation: the woven surface — repetitive, mathematically structured, infinitely variable — has always been a form of computation, long before computers.
Source is an attempt to render that logic visible.
A program that draws its own source becomes its own portrait.
All compositions are seed-documented and available for licensing across textile, surface, and apparel applications.
