What and why

Trim oversized agent tool and resource descriptions across devframe.ts and RPC handlers to stay under 600 characters, reducing token usage in LLM conversation contexts when listing tools.

Previously, tools like inspect-forms, navigate, and resources like ngrx-store had descriptions exceeding 1,000 characters. When MCP clients list available tools, these oversized descriptions consume excessive token context in LLM windows. This pass condenses them into clear, concise summaries while retaining full semantic guidance.

Refs #372

How it was verified

  • pnpm commit:check (commit messages follow the guidelines)
  • pnpm format:check
  • pnpm typecheck (includes the ngc template checks)
  • pnpm test, pnpm test:devtools and pnpm test:panel
  • pnpm skills:check (when .claude/ changed)
  • Docs in apps/docs updated and pnpm docs:build passes (when behavior, options, UI labels or agent tools changed), or the no-docs label added with the reason below
  • pnpm extension:build and extension/ui committed (when app/ changed)
  • Checked in the browser with axe (when the UI changed)

Verification details:

  • Added packages/devtools/src/__tests__/tool-descriptions.test.ts to assert that all tool and resource descriptions are between 40 and 600 characters.
  • Ran Vitest suite across modified RPC handlers and agent tools (all 161 tests passed).
  • Built docs (pnpm docs:build) with link guards passing.

📝 Walkthrough

Tool and resource descriptions were revised across the devtools agent and RPC modules. A test now checks that each registered tool and resource description is 40–600 characters long.

Changes: Tool and resource description updates

Descriptions for tools and resources were rewritten. The new test checks every registered description against the 40–600 character range. Missing resource descriptions count as empty strings.

Change: Other

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 6f308

Agents may read signal-store data from more tabs than intended, while dispatch may require an extra page-selection step. The impact is bounded, but the page guidance should be corrected.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 6f308

This change shortens agent-facing descriptions without expanding permissions, accepted inputs, or runtime operations. Existing write checks and data-handling safeguards remain in place; no introduced or worsened security risk was identified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The PR affects guidance for existing connected-page operations rather than introducing a new independently attackable entrypoint. Checked component writes retain single-page and single-instance selection, while hydration reads retain their existing all-page behavior when page is omitted.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The supplied security assessment retains no findings and rejects the component-edit result-exposure candidate. No changed permission or result path was identified that would reverse that rejection. The assessment's broader security coverage remains partial.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Description text does not grant write authority. Form writes remain gated before broadcast and protected fields remain checked on the page. Router write actions retain their permission gate and page-side URL restrictions. Hydration overlay changes remain blocked for a read-only agent.
