What this is

Two benchmarks for the lobby level badges that landed in #5763. They were written alongside #5771, but they measure #5763's feature, so a reviewer suggested they live on their own.

What changed

Both files are new against main: they move here from #5771 (which drops them in 53ff155).

  • tests/perf/client/LobbyPlayerViewRenderPerf.ts: how long the lobby player list takes to render, with level badges on the players. The fixture now gives each player a packed badge number (packLevelBadge), the format LobbyPlayerView actually decodes. Before, it gave objects, so every badge decoded to nothing and the benchmark was measuring a list with no badges at all.
Each row reports two figures: list, until the list itself has updated, and drawn, until every level badge has been drawn (badges in a big first paint draw a few at a time, so that one includes waiting on animation frames). An update row times only the change it names: the view is reset outside the timed part, so "+1 join" no longer mixes in a departure.
  • tests/perf/LobbyInfoWirePerf.ts: how long encoding and decoding a lobby_info frame with badges takes, plus the join-time badge stamping (levelBadgeFromProgress, levelBadgeForPlayer). Runs under npm run perf.

Benchmarks only: nothing in the game changes, so there are no screenshots.

Testing

Each harness was run once and completes (npx tsx <file>; the wire one also runs under npm run perf). npm run typecheck and npm run lint pass.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Moved from #5771 (level-optout): they measure #5763's roster badges.

- tests/perf/LobbyInfoWirePerf.ts (also in `npm run perf`): lobby_info
frame size and encode/decode time for 10/50/125/150 clients with and
without levelBadge, plus the join-time stamping.
- tests/perf/client/LobbyPlayerViewRenderPerf.ts: <lobby-player-view>
first-paint and update cost for 150 clients under jsdom, with and without
badges. The fixture now carries badges packed (packLevelBadge), as
lobby_info does and as LobbyPlayerView unpacks them, and passes the
number through unchanged when building each fresh roster.

Coordinated review — #5885

Benchmarks only, no production code, and it stands alone on main: packLevelBadge,
src/server/LevelBadge, ClientInfo.levelBadge, testGameConfig and both the benchmark and
jsdom deps are all already there. Paired correctly with #5771's 53ff1550, which drops the same
two files. Happy with this.

The fixture fix is real and worth calling out: LobbyPlayerView decodes with
unpackLevelBadge(client.levelBadge), so the old object-valued fixture did decode to nothing and
the harness was timing a badge-free list. Packing with packLevelBadge makes it measure the
feature. The deterministic LCG and drawing the badge RNG for both rosters so they "differ ONLY in
the badges" are both the right call, and the <lang-selector> note explains a real trap.

Three trivia, none blocking:

  • A contributor's local path is in the committed example.
    tests/perf/client/LobbyPlayerViewRenderPerf.ts documents LOBBY_PERF_SRC with
    C:/dev/OpenFrontIO/.worktrees/roster-levels/src. A generic
LOBBY_PERF_SRC=../other-checkout/src reads better in the repo.
  • The defensive lookup is now dead. levelBadgeForPlayer is looked up loosely through
LevelBadgeModule as Record<string, unknown> so the harness "still runs on a checkout from
before [it] existed" — but it is on main now, so that cast only costs you type checking on the
call. A plain import would be typed.
  • The description is written against Privacy settings: hide my level, and keep my profile out of search engines #5771, not main. It says LobbyInfoWirePerf.ts has
"only a stale comment changed", but to anyone diffing against main both files are new (181 and
~399 lines). Worth a line saying they move out of Privacy settings: hide my level, and keep my profile out of search engines #5771, so the next reader isn't hunting for a
    one-comment diff.

Has Milestone is red — this wants v35, like the rest of the stack.

Correcting my review above — CodeRabbit's two findings are both real, and I was wrong to sign off

I said "happy with this" an hour ago. Withdrawing that: CodeRabbit's major is correct, and it
defeats the purpose of the PR. I checked the fixture produced decodable badges and stopped there,
without checking the measured interval actually contains the drawing. That is the same mistake in a
new place.

The major is real, and firstPaint is worse than "may not include"

LobbyPlayerView.renderLevelBadge() emits <level-badge stagger ...> (line ~643). On a 150-entry
roster shouldStagger() is true, so in willUpdate each badge sets waiting = true, marks itself
aria-hidden, and calls queueBadge(this) — and LevelBadgeFill drains that queue from a
requestAnimationFrame callback (LevelBadgeFill.ts:96), in batches. draw() then calls
requestUpdate(), which is a further update after that frame.

await view.updateComplete resolves when the parent's update settles, which includes only the
badges' first render — the deliberately empty square. So every all badged / half (slots) row
is timing placeholder squares, not badges.

And in firstPaint the deferred work never happens at all: view.remove() on the next line
runs disconnectedCallback → dequeueBadge(this) for every waiting badge, so the queue is emptied
before the rAF callback ever fires. Those rows cannot include badge drawing even in principle.

The irony is that this is the same class of defect this PR exists to fix: the old fixture measured
a list with no badges, and the new one measures badges that never draw. The "no badges vs all
badged" delta — the single number the harness is for — is therefore close to meaningless for the
badge cost.

jsdom is not the culprit: pretendToBeVisual: true is set, so rAF does fire. It just fires after
t1.

Fix: have LevelBadgeFill expose a drained/idle promise and await it inside the timed interval
before t1, and move view.remove() after t1. Failing that, CodeRabbit's alternative is the
honest one — relabel every badged row as a parent-update timing and say in the header that badge
drawing is excluded.

The minor is real too

update(GameMode.FFA, all, allPlusOne) alternates i % 2 === 0 ? b : a, so even iterations add the
151st client and odd ones remove it. Both go into one sample set printed as +1 join badged, so the
median is a join/departure blend. For the other rows b === a, so they are genuinely
"re-render with an equivalent roster" and fine.

Reset to a outside the timed interval and time only the a -> b transition.

Unchanged from my first review

The packLevelBadge fixture fix, the deterministic LCG, drawing the badge RNG for both rosters, and
the <lang-selector> trap are all still right, and this still stands alone on main. The three
trivia there still apply. It is the timing boundary that needs the work, and until it moves, the
badged numbers should not be quoted anywhere as the cost of the feature.

The update rows alternated rosters, so "+1 join" averaged a join with a
departure; the view now goes back to the base roster untimed before each
sample. Each row also reports, next to the list's own update, the time
until LevelBadgeFill has drawn every staggered badge (badgesDrawn).

Re-reviewed f94d0961 — both findings fixed, and my sign-off is restored

Verified in code, including the part I got wrong first time.

The major is properly closed, not papered over. badgesDrawn() is now awaited inside the
measured interval, and critically before view.remove() in firstPaint — so the staggered work
actually completes instead of being cancelled by dequeueBadge in disconnectedCallback. I checked
badgesDrawn() does what the name says: immediate when waiting.size === 0, otherwise a waiter
resolved from settle() once the queue drains.

Reporting list and drawn side by side is a better answer than either of the two I suggested: the
parent-update number stays comparable with the no-badge rows, and the badge cost becomes visible
rather than silently excluded. The header comment earning its keep by saying drawn includes the
frame waits and "reads as latency rather than work" is exactly the caveat that stops those numbers
being misquoted later.

The minor is fixed too: the view returns to roster a untimed before each sample, so +1 join
times only the join and never its reverse.

I also checked badgesDrawn is a real export on main (LevelBadgeFill.ts:90) rather than
something this PR assumes — it is, so the harness runs standalone as claimed. My earlier
"dead defensive lookup" point in LobbyInfoWirePerf.ts stands on the same logic.

Still outstanding from my first review, both cosmetic and neither worth a round on their own:
the C:/dev/OpenFrontIO/.worktrees/roster-levels/src path in the LOBBY_PERF_SRC example, and the
as Record<string, unknown> lookup of levelBadgeForPlayer. Pick them up if you touch this again.

For the record: I signed this off before CodeRabbit found the stagger problem, withdrew it, and am
restoring it now. The lesson I took is that I confirmed the fixture produced real badges without
confirming the measured interval contained their drawing — checking a mechanism exists is not
checking it runs.

…path example

levelBadgeForPlayer is on main now, so the loose lookup only cost type
checking. The LOBBY_PERF_SRC example no longer names a local checkout.

Thanks, and for the re-check. The three trivia are done in c95c89f: levelBadgeForPlayer is a plain typed import now, the LOBBY_PERF_SRC example reads ../other-checkout/src, and the description says both files are new against main, moved from #5771. Milestone set to v35.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: No issues found. 0 findings (0 high, 0 medium, 0 low).

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance. Both files are benchmarks only and don't change the game. Every symbol they import exists with a matching signature: packLevelBadge, levelBadgeForPlayer, levelBadgeFromProgress, testGameConfig, Progress and badgesDrawn. LobbyInfoWirePerf.ts sits directly in tests/perf/, so run-all.ts will pick it up under npm run perf. The render harness's timed sections, the untimed reset to roster a between samples, and the +1 join fixture all measure what the description says they do.

Closing: the designer has decided to drop these benchmarks rather than carry them. They're developer tooling that nothing in the game uses, and the lobby badge work they measure (#5763) has already merged. The fixed versions stay on the lobby-badge-perf branch if they're ever wanted again.

Thanks @Celant for the reviews; the fixture and timing problems you and CodeRabbit found are fixed on that branch.
