Fixes #5624

Summary

Integrates the player-facing save/resume UI and platform storage layer with the versioned game state snapshot engine introduced in #5637.

  • Resume Banner (SinglePlayerModal.ts): Displays an in-progress game card with the map name and elapsed match time. Clicking "Resume" decompresses the gzip snapshot directly into WorkerClient, rehydrating the match in ~150ms without turn-replay lag.
  • Discard Action: Adds a discard button with an in-game confirmation dialog to prevent accidental deletion; automatically discards prior saves when starting a new game.
  • Account & Platform Scoping (SinglePlayerSaveManager.ts): Scopes saves by platform and player identity (openfront_solo_save:<platform>:<id>:v1), including 64-bit Steam ID isolation on desktop so family members or shared PCs do not overwrite each other's saves. Automatically migrates legacy unscoped saves.
  • Auto-Snapshots (ClientGameRunner.ts): Automatically captures and persists background engine snapshots every 50 ticks during local matches. Clears save state on SendWinnerEvent.
  • Desktop Shell Integration (SteamSDK.ts): Caches and provides synchronous access to the active user's Steam ID.
  • Translations (resources/lang/en.json): Added strings for banner description, resume/discard buttons, and confirmation modal.

Test Plan

  • npx vitest tests/client/SinglePlayerSaveManager.test.ts tests/core/snapshot/ --run (all passing)
  • npx tsc --noEmit (clean)
  • npm run lint (clean, 0 warnings/errors)
  • Verified UI banner rendering, duration formatting, discard confirmation, and match resumption.

Walkthrough

This change adds snapshot encoding and restoration, account-scoped single-player saves, and controls to resume or discard saved games. The client passes saved turns or snapshots through lobby setup and initializes the view from restored state. Local games capture eligible snapshots and clear saves after a win or player death.

Changes

Single-player save and resume

Layer / File(s) Summary

The engine library adds snapshot encoding, decoding, header reading, and map restoration. The engine builds view data for restored games and tracks spawn-phase state. Tests cover restored maps, updates, and moving-unit behavior.
Account-scoped save storage
packages/engine-lib/package.json, src/client/SinglePlayerSaveManager.ts, src/client/SteamSDK.ts, tests/client/SinglePlayerSaveManager.test.ts
The save manager adds compressed snapshot storage, scoped metadata, legacy migration, and sparse-turn expansion. SteamSDK caches fetched users and exposes synchronous Steam ID lookup. Tests cover storage, validation, and migration.
Resume initialization and modal controls
src/client/SinglePlayerModal.ts, src/client/Main.ts, src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts, src/client/WorkerClient.ts, src/client/view/GameView.ts, packages/engine-api/src/worker/WorkerMessages.ts, packages/engine/src/worker/Worker.worker.ts, resources/lang/en.json, tests/client/SinglePlayerModalStart.test.ts, tests/core/worker/WorkerClient.test.ts
The modal displays saved games and dispatches cancelable resume and start events. The client passes saved turns or snapshots through lobby setup and initializes the view from worker snapshot data.
Automatic snapshots and save cleanup
src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts, src/client/LocalServer.ts, src/client/Transport.ts, src/client/hud/layers/WinModal.ts, tests/client/ClientGameRunnerDeath.test.ts, tests/client/LocalServerSaveState.test.ts, tests/client/graphics/layers/WinModal.test.ts
The local runner captures eligible snapshots every 50 ticks and disables local saving after a win or player death. LocalServer saves eligible turns on exit or before unload. The win modal clears a dead player's save.

Merge Risk

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c2e25

This change adds single-player save and resume, scoped save storage, and automatic snapshots. Earlier review concerns about lost or stale saves, resume hydration, and cleanup were each reported fixed. No open issue currently blocks merging.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to c096e

The demonstrated impact is primarily limited to locally saved solo-game progress. Migration can remove the recoverable copy of a save when storage fails. Modified saves can also select an online connection path, but no authorization bypass or broader privilege gain was demonstrated.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Legacy snapshot migration deletes the localStorage payload even when the destination write falls back to memory because IndexedDB is unavailable or fails. For a snapshot-only save, reloading then loses the recoverable snapshot. This violates the migration recovery invariant: removal of the old durable copy is not conditional on a successful durable replacement.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated migration failure affects saved-game recoverability within a browser or desktop storage profile. Normal automatic persistence excludes remote games and replays. Broader service, tenant or privileged-shell exposure is not established by the inspected paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An actor able to modify the scoped local save can supply a schema-valid non-singleplayer configuration. Resume still labels the event singleplayer, but Transport selects locality from the embedded gameType and can connect remotely. This is a newly reachable selector mismatch, not a demonstrated authorization bypass: join and rejoin still obtain play tokens, and server acceptance was not inspected.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Saved metadata undergoes version, start-info, turn-count and optional-turn validation before use. The loader does not enforce singleplayer gameType, equality between outer and embedded game IDs, or equality of stored owner fields with the active identity. Ordinary producers use singleplayer configuration and scoped keys; local save modification should not be treated as granting additional server authority.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Snapshot persistence checks for a different current game before and after the byte write, but captures the metadata key before awaiting and resolves current metadata again afterward. Cleanup also resolves the active account at execution time. These guards protect different-game replacement, but do not constitute an immutable account-and-generation ownership contract across identity changes or overlapping operations.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make migration distinguish durable persistence from memory-only fallback, retaining the legacy payload until a durable replacement commits. Bind asynchronous reads, writes and cleanup to an account-scoped save generation so recovery and ownership checks refer to the same operation.
  • proposed — Validate the resume-specific semantic contract before dispatch: require singleplayer configuration and consistent game identities, and prevent remote transport from accepting a local-resume payload. This would remove the selector mismatch without relying on downstream rejection.

🤖 Claude Code Review

Verdict: Changes requested. There is one high-severity bug that deletes singleplayer saves, plus two medium-severity correctness problems.

Findings: 1 high · 2 medium · 0 low

src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts

[High] Finishing a multiplayer match deletes the player's singleplayer save (src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts:955-958)
The constructor subscribes to SendWinnerEvent and calls clearSoloSave() for every ClientGameRunner, whether the game is local or not. WinModal emits SendWinnerEvent in multiplayer games too (src/client/hud/layers/WinModal.ts:328-362). So when a public or private multiplayer match ends, the player's saved solo game is silently deleted, because clearSoloSave() removes the scoped key for the active account.
Fix: Only clear the save for local, non-replay games:

this.eventBus.on(SendWinnerEvent, () => {
  this.hasWinner = true;
  if (this.transport.isLocal && !this.lobby.gameRecord) clearSoloSave();
});

Clearing on winner is also redundant, since LocalServer already calls clearSoloSave() when it receives the winner message. Removing this call entirely would also work.

src/client/LocalServer.ts

[Medium] A game resumed from a snapshot archives a truncated record under the original gameID (src/client/LocalServer.ts:154-163, :295, :315-319)
When the game is resumed from a snapshot, handleResumeGame sends no resumeTurns, so this.turns starts empty and new turns are numbered from 0 while the restored game is at tick N. endGame() → archiveGameRecord(true) and the winner path → archiveGameRecord(false) then call createPartialGameRecord(..., this.turns, ...), which posts a record to /archive_singleplayer_game with the original gameID. That record is missing every turn before the snapshot and has shifted turn numbers, so the replay cannot be reproduced and any server-side validation of the record will not match. The first session also already archived this gameID when the player left, via endGame(), so the resumed session sends a second, conflicting archive.
Fix: Skip archiving for games resumed from a snapshot. Or store the full turn history next to the snapshot and seed this.turns with it, so the archived record stays complete and correctly numbered.

src/client/SteamSDK.ts

[Medium] A stale cached Steam ID breaks per-account save isolation on shared PCs (src/client/SteamSDK.ts:88-104, :139-146)
getSteamIdSync() returns localStorage["openfront_cached_steam_id"] before it checks the live bridge. That value belongs to the last Steam user who ran the game on this machine. SinglePlayerModal.connectedCallback calls getSoloSave() synchronously at startup, before the constructor's async getUser() resolves. At that point a second Steam account on the same PC resolves to the first user's key, sees their save, and can resume, discard or overwrite it. The PR says it prevents exactly this ("so family members or shared PCs do not overwrite each other's saves").
Fix: Don't persist the Steam ID to shared localStorage for identity scoping. Use only cachedUser or the bridge value, and re-read the save (this.resumeSave = getSoloSave()) after steamSDK.getUser() resolves. Also, if the Steam ID is unavailable, getActiveIdentity() currently falls back to getPersistentID(), which gives a different key, so the save seems to disappear once the ID resolves. Prefer returning "no save" until the Steam identity is known.

Checked for bugs and CLAUDE.md compliance.

Save the tick captured in the snapshot.

gu.tick can be older than the snapshot returned by WorkerClient.snapshot(). The worker can execute more turns before it handles the snapshot request, and GameRunner.snapshot() writes its current tick into the snapshot bytes. Passing gu.tick to saveSoloSnapshot can therefore store an incorrect numTurns value. Use the snapshot header tick, or return the tick with the snapshot bytes, before saving.

src/client/ClientGameRunner.ts (1)

733-751: 🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Decode the resume snapshot once on the main thread.

restoreMapsFromSnapshot and readSnapshotHeader each call decodeRoot. Each call decodes the whole snapshot and runs RootSchema.safeParse. On a large map, this doubles a multi-megabyte decode on the main thread during game load.

Return the start tick from restoreMapsFromSnapshot, or export one helper that takes an already-decoded Root. Then call decodeRoot only once here.

// MapSnapshot.ts
export function restoreMapsFromSnapshot(...): { startTick: number | null } {
  const root = decodeRoot(bytes);
  // ...existing restore...
  return { startTick: readStartTick(root.game.d) };
}

tests/core/snapshot/MovingExecutions.test.ts (1)

312-337: 📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🔵 Trivial | ⚡ Quick win

Use correctly typed UnitUpdate fixtures instead of as any.

The as any casts hide three fixture errors:

  • ownerID is defender.id(), which is a PlayerID string. UnitUpdate.ownerID is a number (a smallID).
  • lastPos is an array. The type is a single TileRef.
  • The "train" units use UnitType.TransportShip.

GameView can then process data the worker never sends, so the test can pass for the wrong reason. Build the fixtures with a small typed helper. Use defender.smallID(), UnitType.Train, and lastPos: trainTrack[0]. The compiler can then check the fixtures against the real contract. The same applies to the update at Lines 373-384.

Sketch
const trainUnit = (id: number, pos: TileRef, lastPos: TileRef): UnitUpdate => ({
  type: GameUpdateType.Unit,
  id,
  unitType: UnitType.Train,
  ownerID: defender.smallID(),
  pos,
  lastPos,
  troops: 10,
  level: 1,
  isActive: true,
  reachedTarget: false,
  targetable: true,
  markedForDeletion: false,
  missileTimerQueue: [],
  hasTrainStation: false,
});

Replace the `as any` train-unit fixtures in the test with a small helper typed

`TileRef` for `lastPos`; populate any required fields so the compiler verifies
the real update contract. Apply the same correction to the corresponding update

Thanks for the work on this. I'm closing it because I want to take singleplayer saves in a different direction: an explicit Save button in the in-game settings, with saves stored server-side so they work across devices and can be shared. That's a different design from autosave plus localStorage/IndexedDB, so I'll build it myself.
