Brickfall

Animated preview of Brickfall: the ball chains combos through rows of coloured bricks while the wall drops toward the paddle

Full-quality video: media/gameplay.mp4

Brickfall is Breakout where the wall comes to you. Every 7 seconds a new row drops in at the top and the whole wall moves down a row, and that interval shrinks to 3 seconds. Hits without touching the paddle chain a combo up to x8, and gold bricks split your ball in two. If the wall crosses the red line, or you run out of balls, the game is over. It's built in Godot 4.7.2 with the Compatibility renderer, so it also runs in a browser, and every brick, trail and particle is drawn in code with no image files.

Features

  • A wall that keeps advancing, combo chains up to x8, and gold bricks that split the ball
  • Keyboard, mouse and gamepad bindings in the Input Map (A/D or arrows to move, Space or click to launch, R to restart)
  • Paddle and bricks as AnimatableBody2D, with squash and pop effects on visual children only
  • An enum state machine and an EventBus autoload: the HUD, camera shake and particles each listen on their own
  • Trauma-based camera shake (simplex noise, offset scales with trauma²), CPU particles that work on the web, and a HUD on its own CanvasLayer
  • A seeded autopilot for repeatable recordings

How it works

How to run

You need Godot 4.7.2. The project uses the Compatibility renderer.

# play
godot --path .

# watch the seeded autopilot play
godot --path . -- --autopilot

# run the GUT tests headless
godot --headless --path . -s addons/gut/gut_cmdln.gd -gdir=res://tests -ginclude_subdirs -gexit

# web export (needs the Godot 4.7.2 export templates)
mkdir -p build/web && godot --headless --path . --export-release Web build/web/index.html

A ready-made web build is attached to the GitHub Release as brickfall-web.zip. Serve the unzipped folder over HTTP to play it. Add ?autopilot to the URL to watch the autopilot.

Tech notes

These are the numbers measured when the game was built:

  • 778 lines of GDScript across 11 files, plus 107 lines of tests. The game data in the web build is 41 KB.
  • 13 GUT tests pass headless: 8 cover the pure rules (scoring, bounce angle, speed cap, row timing, game-over line), and 5 load the real scene and drive it with the autopilot.
  • fps: 39 to 50 during play in headless Chrome on software WebGL with no GPU, and 154 to 199 uncapped on desktop with software OpenGL.
  • 0 console errors in the final web build, in both player and autopilot runs.
  • Autopilot game: lasted 67.2 s and scored 3,780, with 62 bricks, a longest chain of 9 hits, 7 splits and 1 ball lost, before the wall reached the line. The run is deterministic: the same seed gives the same game.

Credits

  • The code was written by an AI agent following the GodotPrompter skill pack by jame581. It's community-made, not an official Godot project.
  • Tests use GUT (MIT), bundled in addons/gut/ with its licence in addons/gut/LICENSE.md.
  • Built with the Godot Engine.
