What and why

This PR is gap plan G3, for release 2.2.0.

The problem. In the AdventureWorks autotune runs (#48), the distance-to-closest-record ratio of DimProduct sat right at its 0.5 limit at the 2.1 defaults, and one seed in five failed.

The cause. DimProduct has 606 rows and is fitted by 24 strata segments of 6 to 49 rows. None of them is large enough for its own copula, so each segment's marginals are essentially the empirical law of its few rows.

What this PR adds. Both settings are opt-in, so the default output is byte-identical with 2.1.

  • Marginal shrinkage (synthesis.marginals.segment_prior_rows, default 0, entity tables only)
    • With 20, the table marginal gets the weight of 20 rows in each segment's Dirichlet / DP posterior.
    • A segment of n rows keeps n/(n+20) of its own law (Prop. 1720). Large segments move by at most 20/n in total variation (Prop. 1721). The random stream does not change.
    • On AdventureWorks, 5 seeds: DimProduct DCR goes from 0.50-0.65 to 0.96-1.10, and the scorecard loses 7.8 of 1,267 items on average.
    • It is not on by default. With 20 on by default, science checks C09, C19 and C43 fail (they pass with 0) and one Berka bench item fails. Shrinking each segment toward the table weakens the link between a dimension's segments and its facts. Turning it on by default is the maintainer's decision.
  • Near-copy guard (synthesis.privacy.near_copy: auto, off by default, with near_copy_ratio, near_copy_rounds and near_copy_max_rows)
    • New module relsynth.nearcopy.
    • It redraws rows that are closer to a real row than that row's nearest distinct real neighbour, plus exact copies of unique rows in its encoding. It logs them under near_copies.
    • The rejection inside _finish checks rule redraws and group-effect rows again, within the round budget. A redrawn row that ends the budget breaking a rule gets its rule-valid row back, hidden draws included.
    • It is a distance rule, not a privacy guarantee. Prop. 1723 shows that redrawing until success is not ε-DP for any ε. With finite rounds it gives no DP guarantee of its own, and in DP mode it is post-processing of the seed database.
  • Dropped after study.
    • A segment cap had no effect, because the cap applies per stratum.
    • Copula pooling had nothing to act on, because every small segment already uses the pooled copula.

The report with all the numbers is docs/research/small-dimensions.md.

How it was tested

  • ruff check passes. tools/claims_check.py reports ok (162 claims).

  • Unit tests: 801 passed, 29 skipped locally, including tests/unit/test_small_dims.py (13) and the DP stage-2 guard tests.

  • Statistical checks C1720-C1723 in tests/science/test_small_dims_checks.py.

  • Identity: tools/identity_check.py against main reports "all 24 runs identical" with segment_prior_rows: 0, the new default.

  • AdventureWorks, 5 full fits per setting (seeds 1, 2, 3, 11, 12):

Setting DimProduct DCR Scorecard (of 1,267)
    0 (default) 0.501, 0.648, 0.576, 0.549, 0.581 1215, 1202, 1214, 1207, 1202
    20 0.969, 0.963, 1.010, 0.963, 1.101 1202, 1202, 1201, 1198, 1198
  • Chinook, seeds 1-5: 142/142 on every seed with 0 and with 20.

  • Science checks C09, C19, C43 and C75 run locally with 0 and with 20. All pass with 0; C09, C19 and C43 fail with 20.

  • Full CI on 1ef85cb.

Statistics and privacy

  • New claims have Props. 1720-1723 (docs/proofs/sec_g3_smalldims.tex) and checks. The release PR rebuilds the proofs PDF.
  • The default output does not change.

Each segment marginal of an entity table now gives the table marginal the
weight of 20 rows (marginals.segment_prior_rows, default 20; 0 restores 2.1).
AdventureWorks DimProduct DCR ratio goes from 0.42-0.58 to 0.94-1.04 on paired
draws; Chinook stays 142/142. The near-copy guard (privacy.near_copy) ships
opt-in; the scorecard marks the DCR item of a guarded table as not independent.
Docs, settings and spec references, claims PRV-20..29, report

Walkthrough

The changes add a configurable prior for entity segment marginals and an optional near-copy guard. The guard detects and redraws eligible entity rows, logs redraw counts and annotates privacy reports. Tests, proofs, settings references and research documentation cover these changes and their stated limits.

Entity segment marginal fits use a prior weight that defaults to 20 rows. Tests check the segment’s own-distribution weight and a total-variation bound. Documentation records the setting and related claims.
Near-copy detection and redraw

The optional guard detects near-copy entity rows and redraws them from their existing segments up to the configured limit. Remaining matches are kept and counted in the sample log.
Guard-aware privacy reporting and evidence
src/relsynth/evaluate.py, tests/science/test_small_dims_checks.py, docs/privacy.md, docs/proofs/*, docs/assurance/claims.yaml, docs/research/small-dimensions.md, docs/settings-reference.md, docs/spec-reference.md, CHANGELOG.md
Privacy reports can include near-copy guard data. The scorecard notes that guarded-table DCR results are not independent evidence. Documentation and proofs state the guard’s limits.

Possibly related PRs

Suggested labels: privacy

Suggested reviewers: claude

Merge Risk: Low · previous review c4601

The default shrinkage change is documented. Remaining concerns concern incomplete validation evidence and qualifications to the optional guard’s behavior and counts; merging requires bounded owner awareness or follow-up.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to c4601

The optional near-copy control can report counts taken before later transformations change generated rows. Those counts may therefore misrepresent residual copies in the delivered data. Exposure is limited by the feature being off by default and explicitly not replacing differential privacy.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new near-copy residual count is finalized before SCD and sequence postprocessing. When these later stages change eligible guard columns, emitted rows can have a different near-copy status without another check or recount. Consumers relying on the documented emitted-row meaning of kept can consequently receive stale privacy-control diagnostics. This is an introduced lifecycle/reporting gap, not evidence of a broken differential-privacy guarantee.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new control acts on eligible entity tables within a synthesis run. Eligibility requires privacy processing to be enabled for the table, 50 through the configured maximum source rows, and at least three eligible model-output columns. The default maximum is 20,000 source rows; this is not a bound on the size of generated output.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported concern is misleading residual-copy reporting after later row mutations, rather than demonstrated unauthorized access or a verified reconstruction attack. A recipient of generated data could encounter near copies not reflected in the earlier kept count when postprocessing changes guarded attributes.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — For the inspected DP synthesis path, second-stage generation receives the decoded DP seed database, while retaining the near-copy setting. The guard therefore operates on seed rows rather than reading original private rows through this path. This supports the documented postprocessing boundary; the guard adds no independent DP guarantee.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Near-copy rejection is intentionally best effort: finite budgets allow residual matches, and rule enforcement receives remaining rounds without near-copy rejection. Fallback restoration preserves previously rule-valid attributes rather than trading them for a failed near-copy redraw. These controls limit the concern but do not cover mutations after the final recount.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(privacy): privacy margin for small dimension tables (G3)" follows Conventional Commits with type and scope, is 61 characters (within the 72 limit), and uses an imperative-style summary. It names the main change: marginal shrinkage and near-copy guard for small dimension tables. The title does not mention the default output change, but it relates to the main changeset. Note that the summary is not strictly imperative in form, and "privacy margin" is a loose term for the marginal shrinkage plus near-copy guard.

Full details: No Secrets At Rest Or In Logs

Explanation

The change adds no identified credential storage or disclosure. The new near-copy log and report fields contain counts and a numeric ratio. The diff adds no hard-coded credentials outside the permitted locations.

Full details: Privacy Guarantees Match The Proofs

Explanation

The PR does not change DP contribution bounds, noise, accountant charges or composition. The near-copy guard runs on the DP seed database in stage 2, after the real-data release. The PR updates register entry RM-24 for the changed README sentence and adds claims for the new privacy text. Propositions 1720–1723 and checks C1720–C1723 cover the new small-dimension behaviour.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's main sections: What and why, How it was tested, Statistics and privacy, and Checklist. It states the problem, the cause, and the two opt-in or default-change settings. It gives test evidence, including ruff, unit tests, science checks C1720-C1723, the identity check, AdventureWorks and Chinook results. It also states the privacy limits of the near-copy guard. Some template items are not fully met. The template's science suite line (pytest -m science, C00-C78) and the real-database regression line (bi/COREP, Chinook, AdventureWorks DW, Contoso) are not reported in full, because the description says the legacy C00-C78 suite runs in CI and Contoso and Berka remain pending. The Statistics and privacy item asks for each new claim to have a proof and a check. The description cites Props. 1720-1723 and checks, but the proofs PDF is rebuilt later. The identity check shows 'all 24 runs identical' with segment_prior_rows: 0, yet the default change alters output for the same seed, so the template item about unchanged draws needs an explicit CHANGELOG reference. The description says the change is explained in CHANGELOG.md, which covers this, but the description does not state it explicitly in that item. The CI run on commit 1ef85cb is still unchecked. Overall the description is mostly complete.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 76.32% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 38 functions across 11 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Around line 2627-2650: Reset the near-copy guard cache at the start of
Synthesizer.fit so a refit cannot reuse guards built from earlier source rows or
settings. Remove the _nc_guards entry before fitting proceeds; leave
_near_copy_guard’s cache behaviour unchanged during a single fit.
- Around line 2652-2676: No code change is indicated: _guard_near_copies already
applies the guard in the shared entity-sampling path, and the comment states

synthetic rows are non-identical. Reuse the existing test setup and assert the
current intended outcome without changing near_copies.
- Line 104: Update the privacy documentation to state that categorical encoding
retains only the top 20 levels, so rows differing only in rarer levels may
appear identical to the near-copy guard. Reference TOP_LEVELS and the
categorical encoding in the near-copy metric to make this limitation clear.

Review comments at @src/relsynth/settings.py:

Review comments at @tests/science/test_small_dims_checks.py:
- Around line 132-163: Update test_c1722_guard_accepts_only_rows_outside_B so
its KS comparison tests the conditional law against an independent reference,
rather than comparing two samples filtered by the same NearCopyGuard. Build the
reference by sampling from the normal proposal and filtering with a brute-force
rule on a, after establishing that rule matches B^c for this one-dimensional
setup; retain the existing test’s scope.
- Around line 166-176: Update test_c1722_no_near_copy_draws_nothing to sample
the auto-configured model once and use that result for the comparison and
near-copy count. Assert that flagged is zero, then compare every table with the
unguarded baseline; remove the conditional that allows the test to pass without
checking equality.

Review comments at @tests/unit/test_small_dims.py:
- Around line 108-116: Update test_guard_redraws_and_logs to assert that the
near_copies log is non-empty before iterating, so the test cannot pass when no
guarded table was exercised. Keep the per-entry accounting check, and replace
the redundant ratio-zero identity assertion with assertions that the ratio-zero
run records no redraws and no random draws using the existing observable log
data.

Reset near-copy guards on refit; keep column dtypes on redraw; annotate only
the DCR item just added; explicit entity role check; tuning directions for
marginal and join families; tighter tests (non-empty guard log on a product
catalogue, constant table, asserted precondition, brute-force KS reference);
docs qualify Prop. 1723 and state the 20-level metric limit; DCR range and
changelog wording match the reports.

…ds and DP mode

Prop. 1723 covers a guard that redraws until it succeeds. With finite rounds
it gives no guarantee of its own, and in DP mode it runs in stage 2 on the
seed database, so it is post-processing. Claims PRV-30/31, stage-2 test.

Rows redrawn in _finish for an attribute rule or unique key now join the
near-copy rejection, and the sample log's kept count is taken on the rows
emitted. Changelog says shrinkage reduces reproduction rather than ending
it. Docstrings for the nearcopy helpers.

Bound the guard’s nearest-neighbour work

When an eligible table has 100,000 rows, guard construction calculates 20 billion pair distances. The existing batching still uses at least 2.56 GB for pairwise arrays alone, so sampling can exhaust process memory. Use a scalable nearest-neighbour approach that preserves the exact-twin and positive-distance rules.

The wiring test compares zero with the new default, but it does not check the expected zero-prior marginals. A regression in the zero-prior weight can pass both assertions. Add a comparison with a pre-PR reference or an independent expected marginal fit.

…test DP seed source

nearest() searches the distinct real rows in blocks of at most 4M distances,
so memory stays bounded; near_copy_max_rows defaults to 20,000 since time is
quadratic. Rows whose guard columns change through a rule redraw (a group
effect) join the near-copy rejection. Docs state when a table is not guarded.
New tests: brute-force nearest, DP guard built from seed rows only.

The near-copy part of the rule rejection stops after privacy.near_copy_rounds
rounds and half of rules.max_rejection_rounds, so the remaining rounds
enforce the rules and keys alone. Claim PRV-33.

…n a violation

A row redrawn in _finish only for being a near copy keeps its rule- and
key-valid values; if the rule budget ends with that row breaking a rule,
the values are restored (logged as restored_after_rules), so the guard
never adds a rule violation. Regression test with a 2-round budget.

…t-output claim

kept is recounted at the end of _finish for every guarded entity, after rule
redraws and group effects. README/RM-24 now say 2.2 changes one default.
privacy.md distinguishes the guard's real-row encoding from the scorecard's.
New test: the guard skips tables under 50 rows or with fewer than three
sampled distance columns.

…h rule-valid rows

marginals.segment_prior_rows now defaults to 0 (2.1 output). With 20 on by
default the science checks C09, C19 and C43 fail (they pass with 0): shrinking
each segment toward the table weakens the link between a dimension's segments
and its facts. The 5-seed AdventureWorks validation of shrinkage 20 is in
docs/research/small-dimensions.md (DimProduct DCR 0.96-1.10 vs 0.50-0.65,
scorecard -7.8 of 1,267). The search scale of the setting is linear 0-200.

Near-copy guard: a restored rule-valid row gets its whole stashed row back,
hidden draws included, so the recompute does not draw them again; the log
counts restored_still_bad (expected 0). New tests for hidden draws and for
kept after a group effect without rule redraws. PRV-23/33 extended, PRV-34
registers the guard-versus-scorecard metric distinction; the SCD caveat on
kept is documented.

CI failures on c460126, and what 1ef85cb does about them

  • Caused by this PR's earlier default (segment_prior_rows: 20).
    • settings-autotune: the identity check found every scenario different.
    • science (4/4): C09, C19 and C43 failed. Locally, the same code with 0 passes all three. With 20, C09's Spearman(sale amount, product price) is 0.799 ± 0.026 against a real 0.909, C19 leaves D02 customer unfixed, and C43's bike shares are 0.51 / 0.04 against 0.60 / 0.03 ± 0.08.
    • bench: Berka failed one calibrated item (order association, 0.155 against a limit of 0.15).
  • Fix. 1ef85cb makes the setting opt-in (default 0). The default output is byte-identical with main again: a local tools/identity_check.py run gives "all 24 runs identical". Turning it on by default stays a decision for the maintainer.
  • science (2/4), C75 t_unique_moves_fast. This is a timing assertion. It passes locally with both settings (91 s and 89 s for the whole check), so it does not come from this change. I expect it to pass on the new run; if it fails again I will look at the timing bound.
  • Local tests. The unit tests pass: 801 passed, 29 skipped. claims_check reports ok (162 claims).

Generated by Claude Code

…evidence

The rule rejection logs near_copy_rule_rounds (rounds in which the near-copy
part ran). New tests: both round limits (parametrised), rows changed through a
group effect join the recheck, and the guard's encoding is fitted on real rows
only while the scorecard's design ranks real and synthetic rows together.
PRV-33 and PRV-34 cite them.
