feat(privacy): add quick privacy check to run, bench all generators - #55
Gap plan G5 for 2.2.0 (T06 decision 4, never built). It goes into the 2.2.0 release PR, so this PR does not bump the version.
relsynth run / rs.run now end with a quick privacy check (relsynth/privacy/quick.py). The written release was fitted on every person, so it has nobody unseen to compare against. The check therefore fits the same generator on a third of up to 3000 people of the privacy unit and runs two membership attacks against people that proxy never saw:
DOMIAS, unchanged from T06;
a new population-calibrated closest-distance attack. DOMIAS alone missed a release that copied every person of a 1000-person table (AUC 0.62, against 1.00 for the distance attack).
What the user sees: one line is printed, and privacy_check is added to the bundle and to the --json output. The exit code and the scorecard do not change.
Synthetic files stay byte-identical. The check runs after every write, on its own seeded stream (Props. 1740–1741).
Opt out with --no-privacy-check, rs.run(privacy_check=False) or synthesis.evaluation.privacy_check: false. synthesis.evaluation.privacy_check_people sets the sample size.
Bench privacy suite per generator. ACS and Berka are now also attacked with cart and independent. Those rows carry the generator in their id (privacy[cart]:…, goal:privacy_internal[cart]), so the copula rows keep their baseline. Every bench run also tracks the quick check's AUCs.
Interfaces owned by other threads: RFC-G5-01 (roadmap/rfcs) asks T05 and T06 about them. Nothing they own changes in this PR.
How it was tested
ruff check src tests tools bench passes. The mypy ratchet reports 0 new errors (one baseline error fixed). Unit + e2e: 812 passed, 29 skipped, and the only failure (the claim register's missing evidence file) is fixed in the second commit.
Statistical checks: C1740 (30 seeds, null validity plus power) and C1741 (release unchanged) pass. The C600–C606 code is untouched.
Real databases: quick-check results below. Synthetic files are identical with and without the check (Chinook CSV compare and C1741). Proposition numbers checked with tools/check_proofs.py. tools/claims_check.py is green (154 claims).

Acceptance miss: Contoso takes 38 s, not the ~10 s target. The proxy has to fit the shared tables the unit reaches, including 100k CurrencyExchange rows that a lookup needs. Chinook meets the target.
Statistics and privacy
New claims: Props. 1740–1741 in docs/proofs/sec_v22_quickcheck.tex, checks C1740–C1741, claims PRV-40..44 and RM-60..61.
relsynth run now performs a quick membership privacy check by default, using DOMIAS and a population-calibrated closest-distance attack. Results appear in command and JSON output, the diagnostics bundle and the Python API, with a pass, review or fail status where applicable.
Skip the check with --no-privacy-check or the API and configuration options, and configure its sample size. The check is omitted in DP mode and does not change generated files, the exit code or scorecard.
Privacy benchmarks now cover built-in generators and track quick-check attack metrics.
Changed
CART now applies density smoothing to numeric values by default. Set smoothing to none to restore unsmoothed donor values.
Documentation
Added guidance on interpreting privacy-check results, limitations and settings.
…rator in the bench
G5 of the 2.2.0 gap plan (T06 decision 4).
relsynth run / relsynth.run now end with relsynth.privacy.quick: the
spec's generator is fitted on a third of up to 3000 people of the
privacy unit (a proxy, since the written release has no unseen people),
and DOMIAS plus a population-calibrated closest-distance attack compare
those members with people the proxy never saw. One line is printed and
the result is the bundle's and the --json output's privacy_check; the
exit code and scorecard are unchanged. The check runs after every file
is written on its own seeded stream, so outputs are byte-identical
(Props. 1740-1741, checks C1740-C1741). The closest-distance attack is
there because DOMIAS's kernel density missed a release that copied
every member of a 1000-person table (AUC 0.62 vs 1.00).
Opt out: --no-privacy-check, rs.run(privacy_check=False) or
synthesis.evaluation.privacy_check: false.
The bench privacy suite of ACS and Berka now runs once per built-in
generator (copula, cart, independent); rows of the other generators
carry the generator in their ids so the copula rows keep their baseline.
Every bench run tracks the quick check's AUCs.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The PR adds a default-enabled quick membership check to synthesis runs, with API and CLI controls and results in run outputs. It extends privacy benchmark coverage and changes CART’s default smoothing mode from none to density.
The check samples people, fits a proxy generator, runs DOMIAS and closest-distance attacks, and classifies the result. Settings, tests, proofs, assurance records, and evidence document its behaviour and limits.
Run controls and result reporting src/relsynth/api.py, src/relsynth/pipeline.py, src/relsynth/cli.py, docs/api.md, docs/cli.md, docs/settings-reference.md, docs/spec-reference.md, README.md, docs/assurance/claims.yaml, tools/mypy-baseline.txt
The API and CLI pass the enablement option to the pipeline. The result is exposed on RunResult, added to JSON output, and printed when present. Pipeline check errors are recorded without failing the run.
The privacy suite assesses configured and listed generators and adds generator-specific result IDs. The benchmark runner records quick-check attack metrics and status.
The evidence script runs known-answer scenarios and named datasets. The recorded results include attack metrics, statuses, and runtimes.
CART default smoothing
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Smoothing default and evidence src/relsynth/generators/cart.py, tests/unit/test_generators.py, docs/generators.md, benchmarks/privacy/cart_smoothing_evidence.py, docs/assurance/evidence/G5/cart_acs.json, CHANGELOG.md
CART’s default smoothing changes from none to density. The test checks exact-value shares for both modes, and the documentation and ACS evidence record their reported privacy results.
The benchmark compare and baseline CI jobs will fail on a clean runner until the bench extra is installed. The CART documentation also overstates that smoothing prevents exact release of observed numbers, and the new ACS privacy statement is not registered. Fix the install step and qualify the documentation before merging; the check's runtime logic itself has no open defect.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 24dd8
The new check is advisory, processes already-loaded data, and remains separate from differential-privacy execution. CART smoothing reduces some exact-value exposure, but does not eliminate it. The retained exact-value privacy finding predates this PR; the inspected changes do not establish increased exposure. Coverage remains incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected default path adds computation within the existing synthesis process and authority over already-loaded data. Its proxy can include whole shared tables or retry the whole spec, so the configured person sample is not a bound on all rows processed. No new tenant, service or credential authority was established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained finding concerns exact donor-derived numeric values despite the documented no-exact-number assurance. A recipient of a CART release can encounter these values where smoothing is bypassed or decoding recreates them. The assurance and donor paths predate this PR. Head enables additional perturbation by default and retains explicit warnings that there is no formal privacy guarantee; the comparison does not establish worsened exposure, so this is not retained as an active PR architecture concern.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — CLI DP-mode runs take a separate route, and the ordinary pipeline rejects DP-configured specs before loading or fitting. This protects the new default run phase. The directly importable quick_check helper lacks its own DP guard; whether that helper is a supported DP-facing contract remains unresolved.
observed — The new result removes private member-score vectors and returns aggregate attack metrics, counts and statuses rather than source rows. Fitting and attack failures are reduced to exception types, avoiding credential-bearing exception messages in these returned errors.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — A privacy-check failure does not roll back published synthetic files, and interruption before bundle creation can leave outputs without the new diagnostic result. This follows the explicitly advisory lifecycle rather than weakening an existing release gate; consumers must not treat completion of synthesis as proof that the check passed.

only the engine error types that indicate refusal of the cut-down spec; let
unrelated fitting failures propagate. When that fallback runs, record it in

identifies the fallback and fitted spec.
- Around line 204-234: In closest_distance, request one neighbour from the

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Convert missing metric means to null.
If a completed check identifies one attack but not the other, the unidentified attack has no AUC. If every completed check lacks that AUC, this mean becomes NaN. json.dumps then writes NaN to the evidence file, which strict JSON readers reject. Convert non-finite means to None before serialisation. Based on learnings, “Flag Python serialization of NaN/Infinity derived metrics … without conversion to null/None.”

Run the default generator when a table override changes it
For ACS with --set tables.acs.generator=cart, the initial assessment uses cart, but the loop skips copula because it is the global default. The benchmark therefore has no copula privacy results. cart released each drawn number exactly as its leaf donor had it, so a value
seen once in the source was in the release, and univariate singling out on
ACS reached 0.53 (limit 0.10). smoothing: density is now the default: 0.003,
internal verdict review. smoothing: none restores the old draws.

bench compare and baseline failed on the rebuild_baseline run 42432857200. The cause is not this PR's code. Both jobs run python -m bench without installing the package, and bench/datasets.py has imported relsynth._http since #50, so they stop with ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'relsynth'. Every bench run on main since #50 fails the same way, for example run 42410759705. All seven bench jobs of this run passed. The fix is ported here in 4534731 (pip install -e . in both jobs), and a new rebuild_baseline run has been dispatched on the branch.
cart leak on ACS fixed in 24dd82c. cart copied each number from a leaf donor exactly, so a value seen once in the source reached the release, and univariate singling out was 0.53 against a limit of 0.10. smoothing: density is now cart's default. With it the risk is 0.003 [0, 0.025] and the internal verdict is review instead of fail (docs/assurance/evidence/G5/cart_acs.json). smoothing: none restores the old draws, and saved models keep their option.
Left as is: registering docs/development/benchmarks.md rows in claims.yaml. That file is outside the register's scope (7 documents), and tools/claims_check.py passes. The skip conditions it states are covered by PRV-43.

the generators documentation to avoid guaranteeing that smoothed values can
never equal observed values. Explain that smoothing applies to continuous values
only when bandwidth is positive, that discrete values or values without usable
bandwidth are not smoothed, and that decoding may yield an observed value;
retain the advice to assess every release.

Register the ACS privacy claim.
These lines make a measured privacy claim and cite cart_acs.json, but docs/generators.md has no entry in docs/assurance/claims.yaml. Register the qualified claim with its report evidence. I'm leaving this as is. docs/generators.md is not one of the 7 documents in the claim register's scope, and tools/claims_check.py passes. The sentence cites its measured report (docs/assurance/evidence/G5/cart_acs.json, produced by benchmarks/privacy/cart_smoothing_evidence.py), and the unit test test_cart_smooths_numbers_by_default checks the behaviour. Bringing generators.md into the register's scope is a separate decision for the register's owner.
…t smoothing docs
bench.runner imports defusedxml, which only the bench extra brings. The
smoothing docs now say which values are smoothed (continuous, with a
positive leaf bandwidth) instead of promising that no observed number is
ever released.
