What and why

This PR is gap plan G1 (release 2.2.0, P0): privacy units with composite keys, several units in one run, and governed runs with several units (RFC-G1-01, accepted by Cod3r). It does not bump the version, because the 2.2.0 release PR bundles G1, G3 and G5.

  1. Ownership comes from the IR trace (relsynth.ir.privacy, RFC-T06-01). privacy/unit.py now follows composite foreign keys. A row reached along several paths belongs to every person those paths reach (union ownership, Prop. 1700). New function owners(); subset and profiles use it. The attack suite keeps people who share a row on one side of its split. If that is impossible, the report says so and every context is at least review (Prop. 1700(d)). AdventureWorks FactInternetSalesReason is now owned by DimCustomer.
  2. Real composite keys in the DP seed (Prop. 1702). For an order number with a sequence within it, or a fact's header.key, stage 1 releases a histogram of rows per group, added as one more marginals block (no new budget share). The decoder builds orders with numbered lines, replacing the (i, 1) placeholder.
  3. Several units per DP run (Prop. 1703). synthesis.privacy.dp.unit: [DimCustomer, DimEmployee], or --dp-unit A,B. Each unit owns disjoint tables and has its own accountant and (ε, δ) guarantee. A per-unit budget can be set by hand: epsilon: {DimCustomer: 2, DimEmployee: 1}. The statement uses schema relsynth.dp-statement/2. The plan refuses, before any read, a table that holds two units' data and a link between two units' data. A dropped link is never measured.
  4. Governed runs with several units (Prop. 1704, RFC-G1-01):
    • Policy: unit: {entities: [...]}. The domain budget applies to each unit, and unit_budgets sets a unit's own budget by hand.
    • Ledger: one account per unit. reserve_units reserves all units or none, and touch and settle work per unit.
    • Manifest: privacy.unit is a string or a list, plus charges[].unit and privacy.units. Both schemas are updated.
    • Decision: the unchanged rules run once per unit and all must allow. There is no Rego change.
    • A run must protect every unit of the domain that its source holds.
    • gov budget, gov show and gov policy check show each unit.

Proofs: docs/proofs/sec_g1_units.tex (Props. 1700–1704). Guides: docs/dp.md section 8, docs/privacy.md and docs/governance/guide.md. The claim register adds DP-21..DP-27 and updates PRV-09, PRV-11, DP-08 and DP-13. Report: roadmap/reports/G1.md.

How it was tested

  • ruff check src tests: clean. tools/mypy_ratchet.py: 68 errors, baseline 68, no new errors. tools/claims_check.py: 154 claims traced. tools/check_proofs.py: ok.
  • Unit and e2e tests: 811 passed, 29 skipped (missing OPA, Mongo, Spark and torch). The affected suites were re-run after the last edits (privacy, assurance, governance, dp, e2e CLI, privacy science): 157 passed.
  • New tests/unit/governance/test_multi_unit.py covers the policy, per-unit accounts, per-unit epsilon, domain_override, the decision per unit, an API run end to end, and a CLI relsynth run --registry two-unit run with gov budget, gov show and gov verify.
  • Science C1700–C1705 pass. This includes a new replay with a dropped cross-unit link, which fails on the old code. C1705 (AdventureWorks two-unit replay) ran locally and skips without the bench cache.
  • AdventureWorks DW full DP run with two units at ε = 2 each: 580 s, each unit at ρ 0.0541 / ε 2.00 (docs/assurance/evidence/G1/aw_two_units.json).

Statistics and privacy

  • Each new claim has a numbered proposition (1700–1704), a proof and a check.
  • Non-DP draws are unchanged: tools/identity_check.py --base main gave 24/24 identical runs. That run was before the governance commit, which touches no engine code.

Known limits (see the report): the DP seed's existing check-rule filter drops about 86% of AW sales rows (also on main; suggested for G4). AW's 17 sales reps get a private cap of 1 row each at ε = 2. unit.overlap: forbid was not built.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Differential privacy runs can cover multiple privacy units, with separate guarantees, results and budgets for each.
    • Composite-key relationships are supported in privacy ownership and synthetic data generation. Rows reached through multiple paths can belong to multiple people.
    • Synthetic data generation releases group-size statistics for composite-key groups and removes duplicate declared keys.
    • Governed multi-unit runs reserve and assess budgets separately for each unit, with release rules checked for every unit.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Privacy assessments flag shared-row splits that may understate risk.
  • Limitations
    • Runs are refused when tables contain data from multiple units or units are linked.
  • Documentation
    • Updated CLI, privacy and API references, and added assurance evidence for multi-unit runs and composite-key handling.

Ownership of the privacy unit now comes from the IR trace
(relsynth.ir.privacy, RFC-T06-01): composite foreign keys are followed,
and a row reached along several paths belongs to every person reached
(union ownership, Prop. 1700). AdventureWorks FactInternetSalesReason is
now owned by DimCustomer in the attack suite.

DP stage 1 releases a histogram of rows per group for ids that group an
owned table's rows (an order number with its line numbers, a fact's
header key) as one more block of the marginals (Prop. 1702). The seed
decoder builds real composite keys from it instead of the (i, 1)
placeholder, draws attribute parts of composite keys as attributes and
drops repeats of declared composite keys.

synthesis.privacy.dp.unit (and --dp-unit) accepts several units. Each
unit owns disjoint tables, has its own accountant and gets its own
guarantee (parallel composition, Prop. 1703); the statement has schema
relsynth.dp-statement/2 and charges name their unit. Governed runs stay
single-unit and refuse a list before anything is reserved (Prop. 1704,
RFC-G1-01).

Checks C1700-C1705, including the two-unit sensitivity replay on
AdventureWorks DW. Non-DP output is byte-identical
(tools/identity_check.py, 24 runs).

Walkthrough

This change adds traced privacy ownership across composite-key paths, composite-key group synthesis, and differential privacy runs with multiple privacy units and separate accounting. It also updates governance policies and ledgers, CLI reporting, statements, tests, proofs, assurance claims, documentation and benchmark evidence.

Changes: Privacy ownership and differential privacy

Ownership follows IR-traced paths, including composite foreign keys. Rows reached by multiple paths map to each reached owner. Splits keep people who share rows together when possible; fallback reporting adds a warning and a review check.
Model composite-key groups
src/relsynth/dp/relational.py, tests/science/test_privacy_units_checks.py, docs/dp.md, docs/proofs/sec_g1_units.tex, docs/assurance/claims.yaml
Plans record composite-key groups. Fitting releases group-size marginals, and decoding uses group assignments to generate keys. Check enforcement removes duplicate declared composite keys while retaining unique keys with null components.
Plan and report multi-unit runs

Configuration accepts multiple units and per-unit budgets. Planning assigns tables to owners, and fitting uses separate accountants. Results, statements and manifests report per-unit details.
Govern multi-unit runs
src/relsynth/governance/*, src/relsynth/cli.py, tests/unit/governance/test_multi_unit.py, docs/governance/*, docs/assurance/claims.yaml
Governance policies support multiple units and per-unit budgets. Ledger operations reserve, touch, settle and report separate unit accounts. Release decisions are evaluated for each unit.

Clarify the evidence and reservation wording, and verify the shared-row and ledger protections before merging this privacy and governance change.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 0878a

Two edge cases can weaken privacy-budget enforcement: an unrecognized privacy-unit name can bypass account checks, and custom run identifiers can collide when privacy units are reconfigured. Exposure is concentrated in custom/API workflows; normal generated identifiers and independent release approvals reduce, but do not eliminate, the risk.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new multi-unit decision adapter uses the slash-joined configured unit names as the expected identity for an unrecognized unit. For a domain containing A and B, a custom manifest declaring A/B therefore matches the projected policy identity despite not naming a configured unit. Ledger-input construction skips A/B, and the projected decision receives no account caps or spending figures. With the other verdict and approval conditions satisfied, this can authorize a release without checking any configured unit's privacy budget. This sentinel-based bypass is introduced by the PR; the standard CLI's domain_override rejects unrecognized units earlier.
  • Medium · security · inferred: Historical reservation identity is not preserved injectively when unit-qualified entries are replayed into a one-unit domain: run r for unit A becomes the string r@A, which can collide with an earlier unqualified run actually named r@A. Both reservations can be accepted before the transition, but replay overwrites one state and loses its charge, potentially admitting spending above the privacy cap. The base retained these distinct raw run identifiers separately. Generated identifiers avoid this delimiter, but the public ledger API and manifest schema do not enforce that format, and registry verification uses a different, tuple-based identity that does not detect this accounting-view collision.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified exposure concerns privacy accounting and releases in an affected registry/domain. The membership bypass requires a custom/API producer to supply the special unit name and still satisfy release approvals. The accounting collision additionally requires custom run identifiers and policy-unit reconfiguration. The evidence does not establish an unauthenticated or cross-host privilege-escalation path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A custom manifest can declare the slash-joined domain-unit names, pass the projected unit-equality check, and avoid all configured account lookups. Separately, distinct historical reservations can collapse to one replay key and hide prior charged spending. These are source-derived attack paths, not demonstrated production exploits.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The producer-side domain guard checks the source schema, whereas governance's new per-unit decision adapter derives its views from manifest-declared unit names. Direct record_run calls accept the supplied privacy section without invoking domain_override, making consumer-side identity validation important independently of the normal CLI guard.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Locking and preflight checks prevent ordinary validation or cap refusals from partially reserving accounts. Reservations are nevertheless appended and synchronized individually, so interruption between units can leave a partial reservation. This is conservative charging rather than demonstrated privacy loss; untouched reservations can be refunded explicitly, while touched reservations remain charged.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Reject unknown unit names explicitly before constructing decision views, and require ledger figures for every selected unit. Preserve legitimate source-specific subsets rather than requiring every run to include every population in the domain.
  • proposed — Use structured reservation identities consistently across replay, lifecycle lookup, cap calculation, and verification. Validate reconfiguration with colliding custom identifiers and repeated policy transitions, preserving every historical charge.

- DP plan: a parent measures and truncates only the children on their
ownership links, so a link dropped with drop_columns (to another unit's
table, or off the path) is never read (Prop. 1703). New check: replay
with a dropped customer -> employee link.
- Attack suite: people who share a row (union ownership) stay on one side
  of the training/control/reference split (privacy.unit.split_people);
falls back to the plain cut with a warning when one group holds almost
  everyone. Unchanged without shared rows.
- DP seed: a declared unique key with a null part is not a repeat.
- --dp-unit with no table name is an argument error, not an IndexError.

RFC-G1-01 accepted as recommended, with per-unit budgets also set by hand.

- Policy: a domain names several units (unit.entities); the domain budget
applies to each unit, and unit_budgets sets a unit's own budget (same
delta). gov policy check validates both and lists each unit's caps.
- Spec: epsilon (or rho) may be {unit: value}; each unit's accountant
  gets its own budget.
- Ledger: one account per (domain, unit); entries carry unit;
  reserve_units checks every unit's caps under one lock (all or nothing);
touch/settle/summary per unit; gov verify keys by (domain, unit, run).
- Manifest: privacy.unit string or list, charges[].unit, privacy.units
with each unit's total, statement and ledger entry (schema updated).
- Decision: rules evaluated once per unit (unit_views) and all must
  allow; no Rego change.
- A run must protect every unit of the domain its source holds.
- Prop. 1704 rewritten (governed runs with several units); claims DP-24,
DP-27; docs/dp.md section 8 and the governance guide.

Review fixes: a shared-row group never pushes control or reference past
their size; when the split falls back to the plain cut the privacy report
says so (split_shared_rows, warning) and every context is at least
review (Prop. 1700(d)); union-find only visits rows with several owners;
--dp-unit "" is an argument error.

The ledger now counts entries without a unit against every unit's account,
and all units' entries against a domain that has one unit again, so a
policy change never forgets spend. Check C1706 replays 120 governed
two-unit releases (Prop. 1704(a)); a judge regression test keeps a shared
row split at review under DP. Prop. 1700(a) is restricted to paths
without composite keys, and the docs state that a person in two roles
adds both losses.

Validate the full plan before writing reservations.

If the first plan entry is valid and a later entry has rho=float("nan"), the cap pre-check accepts that value. The first reserve() call then writes a reservation, and the later call rejects the invalid value. reserve_units() raises but leaves a reservation behind, contrary to its stated refusal behaviour. Apply reserve()’s numeric validation to every plan entry before the write phase. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…idate plans first

Touch, settle and refund find a reservation made before the policy changed
the domain's units and write entries with its own unit and run id, so the
lifecycle and registry verification hold across the change. reserve_units
checks every figure before writing any. Adds a record-isolation test for
the training subset of the control's size, and registers the C1705 result
sentences in DP-25.

Replay now keys each reservation by its own identity, and a key already
taken by an older run id gets a fresh suffix, so a legacy run id such as
r@customer can never hide another reservation's spend.

A noisy degree histogram of a small table can give every parent degree 0.
The seed then had an empty fact, and stage 2 failed on an empty fact with
children (the macOS unit job hit this in test_cli_governed_two_unit_run,
about 1 run in 500 locally). The seed now keeps one child row, as a root
table keeps max(n_hat, 1). This is post-processing and spends no budget.

The DP noise is unseeded. About 1 fit in 80 (5 of 400 locally) releases a
group-size histogram with all its mass at size 1, so every order has one
line and C1702's "several lines" assertion failed (science 4/4). The
structural checks still run on every fit; the several-lines check now
needs one of up to three fits (chance of a false failure about 2e-6).

The bench failure on 5e93d77 is not caused by this PR. The job stopped while downloading the Contoso Parquet archive (parquet-100k.7z, in bench/datasets.py download): the server answered HTTP 504 Gateway Timeout. Every dataset run before that point finished normally. I will re-run the job when the workflow run finishes; GitHub refuses to re-run one job while the rest of the run is still in progress.

The other two failures on the earlier heads are fixed in this PR:

  • macOS unit, f68048b: the DP seed could draw 0 child rows, and stage 2 then crashed. The seed now keeps one child row, which is post-processing only.
  • science 4/4, 5e93d77: C1702 assumed every noisy draw has orders with several lines. About 1 draw in 80 does not, so the check now looks at up to 3 fits.
