Gap plan G15 (engineering hygiene), first batch for the 2.2.0 wave. One commit per item, so any one can be reverted on its own. No version bump.
relsynth[spark] extra (G15.1). runtime/executors.py told users to pip install 'relsynth[spark]', but there was no such extra. Added spark = ["pyspark>=3.5", "cloudpickle>=3.0"]. cloudpickle is needed too: the fitted model holds closures, so the spark executor failed with PySpark alone (reproduced with pyspark 4.3.0). The databricks CI job now installs the extra and runs the spark identity test, which no job ran before.
Cyclic imports (G15.2). The module-level import graph has no cycle. All 76 CodeQL py/cyclic-import notes go through imports deferred into functions, and those cannot fail at import time. New tests/unit/test_import_graph.py fails on any module-level cycle (I checked that it catches a planted one). py/cyclic-import is filtered in the CodeQL config, and py/unsafe-cyclic-import stays on.
Dockerfile digest updates (G15.3). Dependabot docker was already on, but Dockerfile.service kept its digest in ARG PYTHON=..., which Dependabot does not read. The digest is now on a literal FROM ... AS python-upstream line, and PYTHON defaults to that stage. Air-gapped --build-arg PYTHON=<mirror> still works, and BuildKit skips the unused upstream stage.
mypy baseline 68 → 29 (G15.4). Annotations only.
Claim tests (G15.6). SEC-10 and RM-27 go from partial to supported (bundle, verify report and profile hold no rows). New SEC-17 covers "Only SELECT is issued against a source". DP-12 gets a doctor --apply refusal test. Register: 148 claims.
Not in this PR: G15.5 (mutation survivors), G15.7 (about 270 claim-register sentences), G15.8 (SLSA L3).
Docker: local BuildKit resolves the default build to the pinned image, and an override build succeeds with a bogus upstream digest. The full image build is left to CI because of sandbox TLS.
Live servers, science suite, real-database regressions: not affected (no engine change), left to CI
Statistics and privacy
No new statistical or privacy claim (SEC-17 is a security claim backed by a test)
Synthetic draws for the same seed are unchanged: tools/identity_check.py against main, all 24 runs identical
Checklist
Every commit follows Conventional Commits and is signed off
Added an optional Spark installation extra. Spark execution requires Java 17 or later.
Bug Fixes
doctor --apply now refuses differential-privacy specifications when it would read real data outside privacy accounting.
Added checks for sensitive values in generated outputs and for source databases remaining unchanged during read-only operations.
Documentation
Updated Spark setup instructions and the tested Spark version to 3.5.8; clarified source-access protections and the scope of the software bill of materials.
Tests
Expanded Spark executor coverage and added module-level import-cycle checks.
The spark executor told users to install relsynth[spark], but pyproject
had no such extra. Add it with PySpark and cloudpickle: the fitted model
holds closures (posterior draw functions) that the standard pickle
refuses, so the executor fails without cloudpickle even when PySpark is
installed (reproduced locally with pyspark 4.3.0).
CI's databricks job installs the extra and now runs the spark executor's
identity test (tests/unit/test_runtime.py -k spark), which no job ran
before. README and docs/runtime.md name the extra.

Dockerfile.service held its pinned digest in `ARG PYTHON=...` and used
`FROM ${PYTHON}`. Dependabot's docker ecosystem reads FROM lines and does
not resolve build arguments, so the digest was never updated (the root
Dockerfile, with literal FROM lines, was).
Put the digest on a literal FROM line as stage `python-upstream` and make
PYTHON default to that stage name. Air-gapped builds still pass
`--build-arg PYTHON=<mirror image>`; BuildKit skips the unused upstream
stage, so nothing is pulled from Docker Hub (checked locally with a bogus
upstream digest: the override build succeeds, the default fails to
resolve it). The default build resolves the same image as before.

Annotation-only fixes, no change in behaviour:
- type the empty dict/list containers mypy could not infer (data,
doctor, engine, expr, keyfind, pipeline, prepare, profiling,
relational, source, table_model);
- declare, without defaults, the attributes the posterior draw sets on
Marginal (p, p_null, knots_v, knots_c) and the engine sets on Entity
(copied) and PairRel (null_mask, child_only). No default is given, so
the getattr(..., False) reads elsewhere behave as before.
tools/identity_check.py against main: all 24 runs byte-identical.
Baseline regenerated with `tools/mypy_ratchet.py --update`.

- test_bundles_verify_reports_and_profiles_hold_no_rows: no customer id
and at most five verbatim continuous values (summaries such as min,
max, quantiles) in a diagnostics bundle, a verify report or profile
output of the star scenario. SEC-10 and RM-27: partial -> supported.
- test_only_select_is_issued_against_a_source: records every statement
SQLAlchemy sends to the SQLite source during introspect, profile,
run (pushdown off and on) and verify; all are SELECT/WITH or the
read-only PRAGMAs of schema reflection, and the source file's hash is
unchanged. Registered as SEC-17 (docs/security.md threat table).
- test_cli_refuses_doctor_apply_on_a_dp_spec: doctor --apply exits 2
with the DP refusal and writes nothing; without --apply it still
reports. DP-12 note removed (verify was already in the CLI test).

The 76 CodeQL py/cyclic-import notes left after #50 all run through
imports deferred into functions (optional drivers, heavy modules and
callbacks into the engine). Python executes those only when the function
runs, so they cannot leave a half-initialised module; computing the
module-level import graph of src/relsynth gives no cycle at all.
Add tests/unit/test_import_graph.py, which builds the module-level graph
(ignoring function bodies and TYPE_CHECKING blocks) and fails on any
strongly connected component; checked by adding `from . import engine`
to data.py, which it reports. With that guard in place, filter
py/cyclic-import out of the CodeQL config; py/unsafe-cyclic-import stays
on. docs/development/ci.md explains the filter.

The pull request adds an optional Spark executor extra and CI coverage, changes the service Dockerfile’s Python base-image stage, adds assurance and import-cycle checks, and updates type annotations, the mypy baseline, and SBOM descriptions.
Changes: Spark executor support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Spark extra and CI test pyproject.toml, docs/runtime.md, README.md, docs/connectors.md, docs/warehouses.md, tests/emulators/databricks/start.sh, .github/workflows/ci.yml, tests/unit/test_runtime.py
Adds the spark extra with PySpark and cloudpickle, documents the Java 17+ requirement, and updates the Databricks stand-in to Spark 3.5.8. CI installs the extra, runs a Spark-filtered runtime test, and audits installed Spark-related packages. The test re-raises Spark initialisation errors when the required-test setting is enabled.
The Dockerfile declares the pinned Python image in a python-upstream stage and defaults PYTHON to that stage.
Assurance test coverage
Layer / File(s)
Summary
DP-spec doctor refusal tests/unit/dp/test_dp.py, docs/assurance/claims.yaml
Tests that doctor --apply refuses a DP spec without creating an output file. The claim register adds the test as evidence.
Output privacy and source access checks tests/unit/test_security.py, docs/assurance/claims.yaml, docs/security.md
Adds checks for customer identifiers and continuous source values in output, and traces SQLite statements while checking that the source database remains unchanged. The claim register updates or adds related claims and documents the observed source reads.
Module-level import-cycle checks
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Build and check the import graph tests/unit/test_import_graph.py, .github/codeql/codeql-config.yml, docs/development/ci.md
Adds a module-level import graph test that checks for cycles. CodeQL filters py/cyclic-import; py/unsafe-cyclic-import remains enabled.
Type annotations and mypy baseline
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Annotations and baseline updates src/relsynth/*.py, tools/mypy-baseline.txt, docs/development/ci.md
Adds annotations to existing local and class state. The mypy baseline is revised, and the CI documentation reports the remaining diagnostic count.
SBOM scope and release notes
Layer / File(s)
Summary
SBOM scope and recorded changes .github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/pypi_upload.yml, docs/development/ci.md, docs/development/supply-chain.md, CHANGELOG.md
CI and supply-chain documentation describe the SBOM as covering the [all] extra. The changelog records the SBOM scope and other changes.
nick-developer/relsynth#50: Pins the Python base image and preserves the PYTHON override contract that this pull request modifies.
Suggested labels:security, privacy
Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review aa0da
The security documentation says no source rows beyond the sample are kept for pandas file sources, but whole source columns are cached in the fitted model state. Operators could misjudge data retention. The remaining issues are small wording fixes in the claim register and changelog; no runtime behavior changes. Correct the retention wording before merge.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to aa0da
The dependency and image-build changes are narrowly scoped, with no new attack path established in the reviewed paths. Privacy assurances remain broader than the demonstrated handling of preexisting in-memory source-data caches, and cluster behavior was not independently exercised.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The new dependency exposure is concentrated in environments explicitly installing the Spark extra and the corresponding CI job. Ordinary and service-image installations do not automatically acquire Spark, and the executor's existing authority is unchanged.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The CodeQL filter excludes py/cyclic-import but retains py/unsafe-cyclic-import. The replacement import-graph check addresses module-level cycles and intentionally excludes deferred imports; it is not evidence of a complete dependency-layering policy.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Separate shared-output privacy assurances from fitted-process retention guarantees, and explicitly account for full-column cache ownership and lifetime before asserting a narrower retention contract.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title follows the Conventional Commits form 'type(scope): summary' with the 'chore' type and a 'G15 hygiene' scope-like label. It is 68 characters, within the 72-character limit. It names the main items in the changeset: the spark extra, digests, mypy, claim tests and imports. The summary part lists items rather than using a single imperative verb, so it only partly meets the 'imperative' requirement.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has a 'What and why' section that explains the change and names the gap plan item G15 as the reason. It has a 'How it was tested' section with commands and results. It has the 'Statistics and privacy' and 'Checklist' sections. Several template items are left unticked or unanswered, including the live server, science suite and real-database regression results. The author explains these as left to CI. The 'What and why' section does not link a formal issue, only a project thread.

Full details: Untrusted Input Reaches A Dangerous Sink
Explanation
The PR does not introduce a flow from untrusted input to a listed dangerous sink. The production changes add type annotations and the Spark extra. The existing Spark executor unpickles bytes generated by its own driver and tasks. The new regular expression test uses generated numeric fixture values.
Full details: Workflow And Deployment Hardening
Explanation
The workflow changes add no unpinned actions or event-data expansion in run blocks. The changed Docker base image remains pinned by version and SHA-256. The changed CI job uses read-only contents permission and disables checkout credentials.
Full details: No Secrets At Rest Or In Logs
Explanation
Major: The new relsynth[spark] extra enables Spark model serialisation. A spec containing a password-bearing database URL remains in Synthesizer.user_spec. For multiple partitions, SparkExecutor.map broadcasts the serialised model, which can spill to temporary files. The executor and model paths remain unchanged, so the previous failure is unresolved.
Resolution
Remove database URLs and credentials from all model references before Spark serialisation. Add a test that checks the broadcast payload for credentials and database URLs.

Do not skip runtime TYPE_CHECKING branches.
For if not TYPE_CHECKING:, this skips the body even though Python executes it at runtime. A cycle in that body can pass the test. Inspect the condition and traverse the runtime branch.

Record the package dependency as well as the submodule.
For from relsynth.pkg import child, this records only relsynth.pkg.child when that module exists. Python also loads relsynth.pkg. If its initialiser imports the originating module, the graph misses the cycle. Record the package dependency as well.

@coderabbitai The four outside-diff findings from review 5815684465 are fixed in caf211b:
test_import_graph.py, TYPE_CHECKING polarity.if TYPE_CHECKING: now follows only the else branch, and if not TYPE_CHECKING: follows only the body. typing.TYPE_CHECKING is recognised as well.
test_import_graph.py, package edges. Importing a.b.c now records a, a.b and a.b.c. The packages that hold the importing module are left out, because Python has already initialised them, or is initialising them, before the module runs. A new test, test_graph_follows_runtime_branches_and_packages, covers both cases. The real package still has no module-level cycle.
claims.yaml RM-27, --top. New test test_cli_profile_lists_values_only_with_top: relsynth profile without --top writes no top values, and with --top 3 it does. RM-27 now cites that test and test_api.py::test_clone_profile_ping, which covers the API default and top=3.
claims.yaml SEC-17 wording. docs/security.md and the claim now say "Only SELECT queries (and, on SQLite, the read-only PRAGMAs of schema reflection) are issued against a source", which matches what the test allows.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Recognise only typing.TYPE_CHECKING as a type-checking guard.
If another object has TYPE_CHECKING = True, its guarded imports run at runtime. _type_checking treats that attribute as typing.TYPE_CHECKING, so the graph omits those imports and can miss a cycle. Check the attribute’s base and add a test with an unrelated TYPE_CHECKING attribute. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…rites, partial
sqlite3's trace hook on each source connection now records DBAPI-level
statements too (PRAGMA foreign_keys=ON, SQLAlchemy's isolation-level read).
SEC-17 and docs/security.md say relsynth never writes to a source and name
the reflection and session statements; partial since only SQLite is
measured. The CHANGELOG qualifies profile output as the default (no --top).
The import-graph test only treats typing(_extensions).TYPE_CHECKING as the
constant.

Round 3 changes, outside the inline threads (9a88c66):
_type_checking in tests/unit/test_import_graph.py now treats an attribute as the constant only when it is typing.TYPE_CHECKING or typing_extensions.TYPE_CHECKING. Tests cover the typing. form and an unrelated p.TYPE_CHECKING, which is followed as a runtime branch.
Nested test helpers now have docstrings.
On the "No Secrets At Rest Or In Logs" check: the spark executor broadcasts the pickled fitted model, and that model includes the spec, so the source location reaches the workers. This happens on main too; this PR only adds the extra that installs PySpark. I've left it for a separate engine change, which would strip the source block from the model before the broadcast. It is noted in the G15 report for the maintainer.

Correct the full-sample claim.
When a pushed fact has at most sample_rows rows, SqlConnector.sample reads the whole table. The cited full-sample test exercises this case. SEC-10 therefore cannot support the claim that pushed facts never leave the source as a whole. Update the security documentation and register to state that the sample can contain every row. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, “Security and privacy statements must be backed by a proof, check, test or measured report”.

Pushdown also reads the whole table when it has at most sample_rows rows,
and the first row of each order-header or running-balance group
(TableStats.first_rows); docs/security.md, SEC-10 and SEC-17 now say so,
with the header-split test as evidence. The SBOM covers the [all] install,

Review comments at @docs/assurance/claims.yaml:
- Line 664: Qualify the source-write guarantee in the claim identified by
“relsynth never writes to a source”: limit it to source-read operations and
state that the target must not overlap the source, unless the execution path
prevents that overlap. Do not imply that `execute` is safe when its target
points to the source database; ensure the revised assurance is supported by a
proof, check, test or measured report.
- Line 584: Update the pushed-facts claim and SEC-10 evidence to distinguish the
retained seeded sample from data read during processing: pandas file sampling
streams every row, and statistics may load and cache full columns. Add evidence
supporting the pandas file path while preserving the existing description of
aggregates, retained samples, and per-group rows.
Review comments at @docs/development/supply-chain.md:

Review comments at @docs/security.md:
- Line 79: Update the SEC-10 Pushdown claim in the security documentation to
clarify that a seeded sample may exceed sample_rows and include every row, and
that when every group has one row, first-row queries can return a projection of
every source row. Keep the documented aggregate, sample, and first-row behaviour
accurate, and update the corresponding SEC-10 claim in the assurance claims so
both statements stay aligned.

SEC-17 holds while the target is not the source; SEC-10 says what is kept
of a pushed fact (file sources are streamed to draw the sample) and that
first rows are every row when each group has one row. The SBOM lists the
connector extras [all] leaves out. The CHANGELOG limits the identifier
check to the test scenario and notes spec literals in bundles.

@nick-developer I inspected the current PR files:
The import-graph code follows the runtime branch for TYPE_CHECKING and includes package import edges. The new test covers both cases.
RM-27 cites the CLI and API profile tests. The CLI test checks output with and without --top.
SEC-17 now describes the SQLite session setting as well as read-only queries. It is marked partial because the statement test covers SQLite only.
I did not run the tests or verify the reported Ruff and claims_check results.
Major security finding: The saved No Secrets At Rest Or In Logs check failed. A spec with a password-bearing database URL can reach the serialised model broadcast by SparkExecutor.map. The broadcast may spill to cluster temporary files and expose credentials. Before merging, remove URLs and credentials from all model references before serialisation, add a broadcast-payload test, and rerun the security check. The saved check has not been refreshed for this revision.
