Summary

Adds a MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL environment variable. When it is set, a real iOS device uses the on-device agent at that URL as is: StartAgent checks its /health and returns, without listing apps, starting the go-ios tunnel, setting up the port forward, or launching the runner. Every agent call (info, dump ui, screenshot, taps, swipes, keys, clipboard, orientation, MJPEG streaming) then goes to that URL.

Combined with devicekit-ios DEVICEKIT_LISTEN_HOST (mobile-next/devicekit-ios#92), this drives an iPhone paired over Wi-Fi only, with no USB and no go-ios tunnel: the agent listens on the Xcode CoreDevice tunnel address, and mobilecli talks to it there.

UDID=<udid>
TUNNEL=$(xcrun devicectl device info details --device $UDID --json-output - | jq -r '.result.connectionProperties.tunnelIPAddress')
# in the devicekit-ios checkout, after building the runner for the device once
TEST_RUNNER_DEVICEKIT_LISTEN_HOST="127.0.0.1,$TUNNEL" xcodebuild test-without-building \
  -project devicekit-ios.xcodeproj -scheme devicekit-ios -destination "id=$UDID" -collect-test-diagnostics never &
MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL="$UDID=http://[$TUNNEL]:12004" mobilecli --device $UDID device info

This is the mobilecli side of mobile-next/mobile-mcp#483. Today a real iOS device can only reach its agent through a go-ios tunnel (iOS 17+) and a forward that mobilecli sets up itself. When that path is not available (for example a Wi-Fi paired iPhone), every agent command fails before reaching the agent, even if the agent is running and reachable another way.

Verified on a real device

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 26.6.1, paired over Wi-Fi only (transportType: localNetwork), Xcode 26.6, macOS 26. devicekit-ios at d963aab (includes #92), runner built with the team's own signing and bundle id.

Step Result
Runner start with test-without-building until /health answers on the tunnel address 5.2 s
curl -g http://[<tunnel>]:12004/health 200, 35 to 48 ms
device.info JSON-RPC to /rpc with curl 200, 0.48 to 0.51 s
mobilecli device info (first call also starts the daemon) ok, 1.03 s, then 0.52 s
mobilecli screenshot ok, 1170x2532 PNG, 0.79 to 0.84 s
mobilecli dump ui ok, full home screen tree, 2.16 s then 1.56 s

The runner log shows every /rpc request arriving from the Mac side of the tunnel. With the variable unset, the same device fails at the default agent path as before (here at the installed agent check, since the runner was installed under a different bundle id).

Things worth knowing for the recipe:

  • xcodebuild forwards TEST_RUNNER_-prefixed variables to the runner, so TEST_RUNNER_DEVICEKIT_LISTEN_HOST is all it takes. No .xctestrun edit is needed.
  • The tunnel address changes when the CoreDevice tunnel reconnects. It changed during a three minute xcodebuild test build and again after the runner stopped. The runner then fails to bind (errno 49, "Can't assign requested address"). Reading the address right before test-without-building avoids it.
  • On this Xcode, the human readable devicectl device info details output labels the field tunnelIPAddress:, so the devicekit-ios README's awk '/Tunnel IP Address/' line comes back empty. The JSON field .result.connectionProperties.tunnelIPAddress works.

Design notes

  • Named after the agent rather than WebDriverAgent, because mobilecli talks JSON-RPC to devicekit-ios (/health, /rpc), not the WebDriver protocol. A plain WebDriverAgent URL will not work here.
  • Follows the existing MOBILECLI_* variable style (MOBILECLI_DEVICE, MOBILECLI_DEVICE_SERVER_IDLE_TIMEOUT). It is read in StartAgent, so it lives in the daemon, which inherits the environment of the CLI that started it. The README says to run mobilecli daemon stop after changing it. MOBILECLI_HOME gives a separate daemon when another one is already running.
  • Per-device scoping. MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL accepts either a comma-separated list of <udid>=<url> pairs or a single URL. With pairs, each device uses only its own entry and any other device falls back to the normal tunnel and forward path. A single URL is accepted only while usbmuxd reports exactly one real iOS device (one cheap device list call, no per-device lockdown session); with more, startup fails with an error asking for <udid>=<url>. The agent cannot report which device it runs on (device.info returns only screen size and scale), so the explicit mapping is what binds a device to its agent. URLs with a query, fragment, or user info are rejected.
  • Only http:// and https:// URLs with a host are accepted, including bracketed IPv6 literals. Anything else (including a query, fragment, or user info) fails with a clear error instead of falling back to the tunnel.
  • The MJPEG stream URL now comes from the agent base URL instead of localhost:<port>, so it follows the override. With the default client the URL is the same as before.
  • Non-agent commands (apps, launch, install, logs, crashes, reboot) and AVC streaming are unchanged and still use go-ios.
  • The tunnel address is reachable only from the paired Mac. Binding the agent to the phone's Wi-Fi address or :: instead would expose an unauthenticated control server to the network.

Changes

  • devices/ios_agent_url.go: read and validate the variable, and point the device at the external agent after a health check.
  • devices/ios.go: use it at the top of IOSDevice.StartAgent, and build the MJPEG URL from the agent base URL.
  • devices/common.go, devices/devicekit/types.go: small helpers (buildMjpegURLForAgent, DeviceKitClient.BaseURL).
  • README.md: document the variable and the Wi-Fi tunnel recipe in the Daemon section.
  • devices/ios_agent_url_test.go: device-free tests with an httptest agent, including one on [::1] for a bracketed IPv6 URL. The device under test is iOS 17 with no tunnel manager, so any tunnel, forward, or app listing attempt would fail the test.

Testing

  • go build ./...: passes
  • go vet ./...: passes
  • go test -race ./...: all packages pass, including 5 new tests in devices
  • golangci-lint run --new-from-rev=HEAD (v2.14.0): one goconst note, because "https" now appears three times in the package (twice in remote.go). Happy to add a constant if you prefer.
  • Live run on a Wi-Fi only iPhone as above.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • iOS devices can connect to an existing DeviceKit agent configured with MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL, rather than starting a local agent.
    • Configure one URL for a single connected iOS device or map URLs to device IDs. URLs must be valid HTTP or HTTPS addresses, and a single URL requires exactly one connected device. Invalid or unreachable addresses return an error.
  • Bug Fixes
    • MJPEG capture URLs use the connected agent’s address, supporting video capture with externally hosted agents.

📝 Walkthrough

iOS agent startup can use a validated URL from MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL, including a mapping from device UDIDs to URLs. MJPEG capture builds its URL from the DeviceKit client’s base URL. Tests cover URL validation, device selection, external-agent startup, and MJPEG URL construction.

Changes: External iOS Agent URL

Resolve and validate the agent URL
devices/ios_agent_url.go, devices/ios_agent_url_test.go
The setting supports a bare URL or comma-separated UDID mappings. It validates URL components, rejects malformed or duplicate mappings, and accepts a bare URL only when exactly one distinct real iOS device is connected. Tests cover URL validation and mapping selection.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Check that the external agent belongs to this IOSDevice.

If two devices are available and the URL points to device A, StartAgent also binds an IOSDevice for device B to A. /health establishes liveness, not a match with d.Udid. Commands selected for B can therefore act on A. Check agent identity before storing the client, or require an explicit URL mapping by device ID.

Thanks, all three are addressed in the latest push.

  • Query and fragment: the agent URL is rejected if it has a query (including a bare ?) or a fragment, so /health, /rpc and /mjpeg always land on the intended path.
  • Credentials: URLs with a user name or password are rejected outright. The agent has no authentication, so credentials have no use and would only travel in cleartext.
  • Device binding: MOBILECLI_IOS_AGENT_URL now takes <udid>=<url> pairs (comma separated). Each device uses only its own entry, and an unmapped device takes the normal tunnel path. A bare URL is still accepted, but only while exactly one real iOS device is connected; with more, startup fails and asks for <udid>=<url>. The agent's device.info returns only screen size and scale, so identity cannot be checked on the agent side, which is why the binding is explicit.

When set, a real iOS device uses the DeviceKit agent at that URL after a
health check, without listing apps, starting the go-ios tunnel, setting
up a port forward, or launching the runner. Combined with
DEVICEKIT_LISTEN_HOST (devicekit-ios#92) this drives a Wi-Fi paired
iPhone through the Xcode CoreDevice tunnel address. The MJPEG URL now
follows the agent base URL.

Classify a value that parses as a single http(s) URL as a bare URL before
treating '=' and ',' as mapping separators. The README now says the agent
serves plain HTTP, so the URL should be loopback or the CoreDevice tunnel.
