# Call Azure OpenAI through the System.AI module, not a hand-built HttpClient request

## Description

The System Application's AI module (`Azure OpenAI`, `AOAI Chat Messages`, `AOAI Chat Completion Params`, `AOAI Operation Response`) is the supported way to call Azure OpenAI from AL. A call made through it is tied to a registered Copilot capability by `SetCopilotCapability`. The capability appears on the **Copilot & agent capabilities** page, where administrators can deactivate it and control user access. The call is also subject to the environment's data-movement and billing rules, and it emits Copilot telemetry.

An AL `HttpClient` request posted straight to an `openai.azure.com` (or other LLM) endpoint gets none of this. Administrators cannot see or switch off the feature, the call runs even when the customer has opted out of data movement, and Business Central AI resources and their billing cannot be used. Agents asked to "add AI" to an extension often produce this raw HTTP pattern, because it is how other platforms call OpenAI.

## Best Practice

Build the request with the AI module: authorize with `SetAuthorization` (own resource, key as `SecretText`) or `SetManagedResourceAuthorization` (Business Central AI resources), call `SetCopilotCapability` with your registered capability, add messages through `AOAI Chat Messages`, and generate with `GenerateChatCompletion`. Check `IsEnabled` for the capability before offering or running the feature.

Authorization signatures depend on the target version. The sample uses the BC23+ own-resource setup: `SetAuthorization(ModelType, Endpoint, Deployment, ApiKey)`, with the endpoint, deployment, and `SecretText` key supplied by the caller from secure extension configuration. It does not require `AOAI Deployments` or a particular managed model. For Business Central AI resources, select an overload available in the target symbols: BC24 has no `SetManagedResourceAuthorization`; BC27 provides four/five-argument overloads requiring own-resource details; the two-argument `SetManagedResourceAuthorization(ModelType, ManagedResourceDeployment)` is available from BC28. Do not use that modern shorthand in an extension targeting older versions.

The good companion declares its own `Draft Item Description` capability enum value so it can be prepared independently. Before running it, register that value using the [install/upgrade registration pattern](register-copilot-capability-on-install-and-upgrade.md) and activate the capability. The registration article's companion is a separate example: adapt its registration code to this sample's enumextension rather than adding a second declaration of the same value.

See sample: [`call-azure-openai-through-the-ai-module.good.al`](call-azure-openai-through-the-ai-module.good.al).

## Anti Pattern

AL code that sends an `HttpClient` request to an Azure OpenAI or other LLM completion endpoint (`/chat/completions`, `/completions`, `api-key` header, `messages` JSON array) to implement a user-facing Copilot feature. Also a call through the AI module that omits `SetCopilotCapability`.

This rule is about generative AI calls made from a Business Central extension. Do not flag HTTP calls to non-LLM services, or code inside the System Application's own AI module.

See sample: [`call-azure-openai-through-the-ai-module.bad.al`](call-azure-openai-through-the-ai-module.bad.al).

That a raw HTTP call bypasses capability deactivation and data-movement controls follows from those controls being implemented in the module; Microsoft does not state it as a separate rule.

# Check the AOAI Operation Response before using generated output

## Description

`GenerateChatCompletion`, `GenerateTextCompletion`, and `GenerateEmbeddings` in codeunit `Azure OpenAI` report the outcome of the service call in the `AOAI Operation Response` passed by `var`; a failed completion does not stop the AL code. Such failures are routine: throttling, content filtering, timeouts, token limits, or overconsumption of Business Central AI resources. (Setup problems such as a missing capability can still raise errors before the call.) Code that calls `GetLastMessage()` or uses the returned text without checking `IsSuccess()` then treats empty or unrelated text as the model's answer, and may parse it, show it as a proposal, or write it to records.

Agents familiar with SDKs that throw on failure usually omit this check, because the API looks like it would raise an error.

## Best Practice

Immediately after each generate call, test `AOAIOperationResponse.IsSuccess()`. On failure, stop and give the user a clear, actionable message. Use `GetError()` and `GetStatusCode()` for telemetry or to distinguish retryable conditions, without exposing raw service text as the only explanation. Read `GetLastMessage()` or the function-call results only on the success path.

Both samples use the BC23+ own-resource `SetAuthorization(ModelType, Endpoint, Deployment, ApiKey)` overload, with configuration supplied by the caller and the key passed as `SecretText`. Response checking is independent of the authorization mode. If using Business Central AI resources, choose an overload supported by the target version; the two-argument `SetManagedResourceAuthorization` requires BC28+. See [version-qualified authorization guidance](call-azure-openai-through-the-ai-module.md).

Each companion independently declares the `Reminder Draft Demo` table, its `Body Text` field, and the `Draft Payment Reminder` capability enum value. Before running either sample, register and activate that capability using the [install/upgrade registration pattern](register-copilot-capability-on-install-and-upgrade.md), adapted to this enum value, and pass an existing reminder draft record. The enumextension supplies the AL symbol; it does not register the capability at runtime.

See sample: [`check-aoai-operation-response-before-using-output.good.al`](check-aoai-operation-response-before-using-output.good.al).

## Anti Pattern

A generate call followed by `GetLastMessage()`, by use of the returned text, or by parsing or persisting the result, with no `IsSuccess()` check on that response in between. A check that only logs the failure and then continues with the output is the same defect.

See sample: [`check-aoai-operation-response-before-using-output.bad.al`](check-aoai-operation-response-before-using-output.bad.al).

# Keep user input and record text out of the system message

## Description

`AOAI Chat Messages` separates roles: the system message (`SetPrimarySystemMessage`, `AddSystemMessage`) holds the metaprompt that defines the model's task, output format, and guard rails; user messages (`AddUserMessage`) carry what the user typed and the business data to work on. Models give system instructions more weight than user content. When an extension concatenates free text from the user, or from record fields that users or external parties can edit (descriptions, comments, imported e-mails, vendor names), into the system message, that text can override the metaprompt: change the output format the AL code parses, remove guard rails, or redirect the task. This is prompt injection, and placing the text in the system role makes it more effective.

## Best Practice

Keep the system message static and owned by the extension: the task, the output contract, and the rules. Pass the user's prompt and any record data as user messages, clearly delimited (for example, as a JSON object or between labeled markers) and described in the metaprompt as data, not instructions. Still validate the model's output before using it, because separating roles reduces injection risk without removing it.

See sample: [`keep-user-input-out-of-the-system-message.good.al`](keep-user-input-out-of-the-system-message.good.al).

## Anti Pattern

A call to `SetPrimarySystemMessage` or `AddSystemMessage` whose text is built with `+`, `StrSubstNo`, or a `TextBuilder` from a PromptDialog input field, a procedure parameter that carries user text, or a user-editable record field. Values the extension controls, such as a language code, today's date, or an option caption, are not this defect.

See sample: [`keep-user-input-out-of-the-system-message.bad.al`](keep-user-input-out-of-the-system-message.bad.al).
