Support Companion

Support Companion is a macOS app that IT deploys to give people one place to see the state of their Mac and fix common problems themselves, instead of opening a ticket.

AppIcon

What it does

  • Shows device, storage, battery and MDM details, and the same information on the desktop if you want it there.
  • Tracks patching progress and pending updates from whatever already manages the Mac.
  • Gives people a self-service catalog to install approved software from.
  • In Fleet mode, shows the compliance checks failing on the Mac and how to resolve them.
  • Grants time-limited administrator rights with a logged reason, enforced by a privileged helper.
  • Lets a standard user install applications you have allowlisted, without an administrator password.
  • Runs actions you define, with or without root.
  • Carries your organisation's name, logo and accent colour throughout.

It reads from whatever you already run: Munki, Jamf Pro, Microsoft Intune, Fleet, or plain system profiler. See Modes.

Requirements

  • macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
  • Optional, for app patch tracking and self service: Munki, Jamf Pro, Intune or Fleet. Without one of them the app runs in System Profiler mode and shows device information only.
  • macOS 15 or later and supervision, only if you deploy the privileged helper declaratively. See Deploying the helper.

What's new in 3.0.0

3.0.0 is a large release, and parts of it are breaking. The short version:

  • Fleet is supported as a mode, with self-service software and compliance checks. See Fleet mode.
  • Privileged settings are only honoured when an administrator set them. If you deploy elevation settings or privileged actions with defaults write as the user, they will stop working. See Configuration.
  • The helper enforces elevation, not the app. Demotion now happens whether or not the app is running, and rights granted to other accounts during a window are taken back. See Admin elevation.
  • The helper is installed by the package, and can be deployed declaratively instead. The install fails if the helper does not end up running, and the helper refuses clients older than 3.0.0. See Deploying the helper.
  • Standard users can install allowlisted software without an administrator password. See User installs.
