Measured 2026-08-27: this gate caught 0 of 6 invisible-character test cases. It has never detected an NBSP, zero-width space, BOM, soft hyphen, bidi override or word joiner.

Root cause

The pattern used UTF-8 byte sequences (\xc2\xa0) while grep -P matches characters. Bytes c2 a0 are one character U+00A0; \xc2\xa0 asks for two, U+00C2 then U+00A0 — never present.

grep -P '\xc2\xa0'  ->  miss
grep -P '\x{a0}'    ->  MATCH

Only \x00 worked, being single-byte in both readings. The gate ran, passed, and could not see what it exists to see.

Fixed

  • codepoint escapes in place of byte sequences
  • C0 controls \x01-\x08,\x0B,\x0C,\x0E-\x1F added (TAB/LF/CR excluded)
  • grep -a — without it grep skips any NUL-bearing file as binary

The C0 range matters: a stray backspace byte made a workflow unparseable in developer-ecosystem, so it never ran — and this linter called it clean.

Canonical fix: hyperpolymath/empty-linter#70. 1 file(s) here.

Verified: YAML re-parsed, and the corrected pattern was confirmed to catch a real NBSP before the change was kept.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved automated checks for invisible and unusual characters.
    • Scanning now handles binary files more reliably, reducing the chance of missed issues during validation.
    • Unicode character detection has been updated to provide more consistent results across supported environments.

Walkthrough

The empty-lint workflow now matches invisible characters with Unicode code-point escapes, includes selected C0 controls, and scans binary files as text.

Changes

Invisible-character gate

Layer / File(s) Summary
Update invisible-character scanning
.github/workflows/dogfood-gate.yml
The scan uses Unicode code-point escapes, adds selected C0 control characters, and runs grep with -a for binary files.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~5 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 5baee

The CI workflow still uses a pattern that GNU grep rejects, while the error is suppressed, so the gate can pass without detecting forbidden characters. This concrete correctness issue should be fixed before merging.

Poem

A rabbit checks each hidden sign
Unicode marks now align
Binary files join the scan
C0 controls show their plan
The gate hops on, precise and bright

Make PATTERNS compatible with GNU grep before restoring the BOM check.

grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" exits with character code point value in \x{} or \o{} is too large for the current pattern. The workflow suppresses this error and can report zero findings. Prefix the pattern with (*UTF), then retain the explicit first-three-byte check for a leading UTF-8 BOM.

definition to prefix the regular expression with (*UTF) for GNU grep
compatibility, and preserve the separate explicit check for a leading UTF-8 BOM.

Pull Request Overview

The PR successfully addresses the invisible character detection gate by transitioning to PCRE-compatible Unicode hex escapes and ensuring binary-like files are scanned using the -a flag. Codacy analysis indicates the changes are up to standards with no new quality issues.

While the logic fixes are sound, there is a risk of regression as no sample files containing these invisible characters were added to the repository for automated CI validation. Additionally, the shell command used to execute the check is currently inefficient and suppresses potential errors, which could lead to silent failures in the future.

About this PR

  • Although the PR description mentions verification against 6 test cases, no sample files containing these invisible characters (e.g., a test directory with files containing NBSP, BOM, or NUL bytes) were added to the repository. Adding these would provide a permanent regression suite for this CI gate.

Test suggestions

  • Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using the new codepoint pattern
  • Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
  • Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF)
  • Verify that files containing NUL bytes are scanned and not skipped (test 'grep -a' functionality)
Prompt proposal for missing tests
Consider implementing these tests if applicable:
1. Verify detection of Non-Breaking Space (U+00A0) using the new codepoint pattern
2. Verify detection of C0 control characters (e.g., Backspace \x08)
3. Verify detection of Byte Order Mark (BOM, U+FEFF)
4. Verify that files containing NUL bytes are scanned and not skipped (test 'grep -a' functionality)

🟡 MEDIUM RISK

Suggestion: Optimize the search by batching files and removing redundant flags. Using -exec ... + is significantly faster than -exec ... \; as it avoids spawning a new process for every file. Additionally, removing 2>/dev/null ensures that PCRE compilation errors or permission issues are visible in the CI logs. The -a flag correctly ensures files with NUL bytes are processed.

Suggested change
-exec grep -aPrl "$PATTERNS" {} \; > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt 2>/dev/null
-exec grep -aPl "$PATTERNS" {} + > /tmp/empty-lint-results.txt
