Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is replaced with the rsr-template-repo canonical, which — besides the uses: line — restricts the trigger to branch pushes (tag and deletion payloads mislabel Branch:/head_commit), sets timeout-minutes: 5, carries a deliberately per-run concurrency group, and grants only contents: read. How many of those are actual changes here depends on how far this repo's copy had drifted — read the diff, not this list. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G 1456a7c canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Push email notifications are now sent only for branch pushes, reducing unnecessary alerts.
    • Notification processing has been updated to improve delivery reliability and prevent runs from being cancelled or queued.
    • Email notification jobs now have a five-minute completion limit.

Walkthrough

The push email workflow now runs for branch pushes only. Each run has an independent concurrency group, a five-minute timeout, and the pinned hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action sender.

Changes

Push email notification workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Workflow controls and email delivery
.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml
The workflow documents its re-landing context, filters triggers to branch pushes, isolates runs by github.run_id, sets a five-minute job timeout, and replaces the mail action with the pinned SMTP notification action.

Estimated code review effort: 2 (Simple) | ~10 minutes

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 1456a

The workflow now uses a sender with different SMTP transport requirements. If the configured server uses STARTTLS, port 587, or lacks AUTH PLAIN support, push-email notifications will fail; confirm compatibility before merging.

Poem

A rabbit checks the branch at dawn
Tags stay still while pushes run on
Each message hops its separate way
Five minutes marks the end of play
Pinned mail sails through the day

No change required for branch deletion filtering.

GitHub does not trigger push workflows when a branch is deleted. Therefore, this workflow cannot send a notification for a deleted branch, and !github.event.deleted is unnecessary.

Confirm the SMTP server configuration before merging.

The action uses implicit TLS with secure: true and authenticates with AUTH PLAIN. Confirm that secrets.SMTP_PORT is an implicit-TLS port, normally 465, and that the server supports AUTH PLAIN. Port 587 with STARTTLS and Microsoft 365 are not supported.
