Adds a Signed commits section to this repo's CONTRIBUTING, per owner ruling D218. The estate policy is docs/SIGNING-POLICY.adoc in hyperpolymath/standards.

This repo's default branch is covered by the zero-bypass Require-Signed-Commits ruleset, and rebase-merge is off. The section tells contributors what that requires:

  • People and interactive agents sign with an SSH signing key.
  • Apps, bots and workflows write through the API, so GitHub signs their commits.
  • PRs are merged with squash.

If the file already had its own signing section, that section is replaced in place instead of adding a second one. Lines elsewhere that told people to sign with GPG are changed to match the policy (SSH for people).

This is a docs-only change. The commit was created through createCommitOnBranch, so GitHub signs it.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated contribution guidance to require signed commits for changes reaching the default branch.
    • Clarified signing requirements for people and automated tools, and the use of squash merges.

Walkthrough

Both contribution guides add signed-commit requirements, signing instructions, commit submission methods for apps and workflows, and squash-merge guidance.

Signed commit policy

Layer / File(s) Summary
Signing and merge guidance
.github/CONTRIBUTING.md, CONTRIBUTING.adoc
Both guides describe signing requirements for people and interactive agents, API or signed-push action use for apps, bots and workflows, and squash-merge rules. They state that unsigned commits block merging and rebase-merge is disabled.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~4 minutes

Change: Other

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 004a4

The guides add signing and squash-merge expectations, and the checked-in configuration declares signatures required on main. The possible rebase-setting discrepancy is unverified, so no concrete merge-blocking risk is established.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 004a4

The change documents signing responsibilities without changing repository permissions or automation. However, the claimed enforcement guarantees could not be confirmed: checked-in settings permit rebase merges while the new guidance says they are disabled.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed security scope is contributor provenance and admission of changes to the default branch. The inspected change does not expand automation credentials, merge authority, or runtime exposure; it changes the instructions governing their use.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing Dependabot path conditionally approves and enables squash auto-merge using GITHUB_TOKEN. This supports one documented automated merge path, but does not prove that alternative merge methods or unsigned commits are rejected across all contributors.

- Merge PRs with **squash**. The ruleset checks every commit on the PR branch,
not just the result, so one unsigned commit blocks the merge. Re-create such a
branch with signed commits (`git cherry-pick -S`) and open a new PR.
Rebase-merge replays commits unsigned and is disabled.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The guides say rebase-merge is disabled, but the checked-in repository setting enables it. .github/settings.yml sets allow_rebase_merge: true (Lines 48–57).

  • .github/CONTRIBUTING.md#L142-L142: set allow_rebase_merge to false if rebase-merge must be disabled, or revise the statement to match the setting.
  • CONTRIBUTING.adoc#L26-L26: make the same correction.
