Replaces dawidd6/action-send-mail with hyperpolymath/smtp-notify-action v0.2.0 (tag commit ede1191ef6ff3ac02c4f4d9efdf837ee517e11d7), per the 2026-09-02 ruling (standards spec §5.5/§9, PR hyperpolymath/standards#725). The whole file is the rsr-template-repo canonical, so besides the uses: line it also: limits the trigger to branch pushes (tag/deletion payloads mislabel Branch:), drops actions: read (unused), and adds timeout-minutes: 5. Dormant gating on vars.PUSH_EMAIL_ENABLED == 'true' is unchanged. Line 1 SPDX header kept as it was.

Engine: .git-private-farm/scripts/smtp-notify-sweep.sh. Verification for this repo: pr=41 regime=no-lock changed=.github/workflows/push-email-notify.yml, sig=G fdb2896 canon=543fc1474b54 base=main
(pristine/post = gh actions-lock --no-fix validity before/after; repair = the lock was already invalid before this change and is valid after it.)

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Push email notifications now run only for branch pushes, reducing unnecessary notifications from other push events.
    • Notification runs are handled independently, ensuring an active run is not cancelled or held behind another run.
    • Notifications now use an updated, securely pinned delivery service.
    • A five-minute time limit helps prevent stalled notification jobs from running indefinitely.

Walkthrough

The GitHub Actions workflow now sends notifications for branch pushes only. Each run has an independent concurrency group. The notification job has a five-minute timeout and uses a SHA-256-pinned SMTP notification action.

This workflow can send malformed or non-commit emails when branches are deleted, and notifications may fail if the configured SMTP server does not support AUTH PLAIN. Exclude deletion events and confirm SMTP authentication compatibility before merging.

🌐 Web query:

GitHub push webhook payload deleted branch head_commit null documentation

💡 Result:

In the GitHub push webhook event, the head_commit field will be null when a branch or tag is deleted [1][2][3]. When a branch or tag deletion occurs, the deleted boolean field in the webhook payload is set to true, and the after SHA is set to a string of zeros (e.g., 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000) [1][4][3]. Because no valid commit exists at the "after" state of a deletion, the head_commit object is null [1][4]. If your application logic processes push webhooks, it is essential to check the deleted field before attempting to access properties within the head_commit object to avoid null pointer exceptions or processing errors [4]. Summary of relevant payload fields for deletions: - deleted: true [1][3] - after: 0000000000000000000000000000000000000000 [4] - head_commit: null [1][3]

Exclude branch-deletion events.

branches: ['**'] does not exclude branch deletion events. GitHub sets github.event.deleted to true and github.event.head_commit to null; this workflow still invokes the SMTP action and may send a non-commit notification. Add github.event.deleted != true to the job condition and test a branch deletion.

Confirm SMTP authentication compatibility before enabling the workflow.

The pinned action supports AUTH PLAIN only. An SMTP server that does not advertise AUTH PLAIN can reject SMTP_USER and SMTP_PASS, causing the step to fail. Confirm that SMTP_HOST accepts AUTH PLAIN with these credentials.
