Summary

Reduce verbose rendered-color extraction costs by reading ordinary saved RGB fills without per-cell COM calls and asking Excel only for conditional-formatting candidates and ambiguous static colors. Preserve the existing colors map, default-background and ignored-color behavior. Excel still evaluates conditional formatting; unsupported XML/styles, unsaved workbooks and incompatible sessions use the legacy full scan. Failed candidate reads discard partial results and retry that scan.

  • Reuse the extraction-scoped openpyxl session and record used cells, candidates, actual DisplayFormat calls, durations and fallback reasons.
  • Add regression coverage, sequential Excel benchmark fixtures and raw evidence, the hybrid-color specification, and proposed ADR-0015 with synchronized indexes.
  • Prepare minor release 0.9.0 by updating pyproject.toml, the editable package in uv.lock, and the changelog.

Closes #159.

Performance and compatibility

The final Windows / Excel 16.0 benchmark used 300 x 20 sheets, four combinations of default-background and ignored-color options, and three repeats. All 24 paired color maps matched exactly; expected conditional colors were verified.

Fixture DisplayFormat calls, legacy / hybrid Legacy median range Hybrid median range
Ordinary static fills 6,000 / 0 15.5–18.7 s 0.084–0.100 s
Sparse conditional formatting, 30 candidate cells 6,000 / 30 12.8–17.0 s 0.144–0.208 s

These are configuration-specific medians on one machine, not universal timing thresholds. The separate 10-row probe verifies rendered colors for sparse, dense and overlapping formula rules; the overlapping formula fixture takes the legacy path because calculation makes the workbook unsaved. Dense formatting and conservative fallbacks retain full COM work. Initial fixtures that did not render conditional colors are retained as rejected evidence and explicitly excluded from correctness and performance conclusions.

See benchmark results and final raw measurements.

Tests

  • rtk uv run --all-extras pytest -m "not com and not render and not libreoffice" -q with SKIP_COM_TESTS=1: 1,132 passed, 13 deselected; 4 existing openpyxl DrawingML warnings.
  • rtk uv run --all-extras ruff check src/exstruct tests/core/test_color_hybrid.py: passed.
  • rtk uv run --all-extras mypy src/exstruct: passed, 90 source files.
  • rtk uv lock --check and rtk git diff --check: passed.
  • Sequential real-Excel benchmark: final 300-row static/sparse run, three repeats, 48 strategy measurements; 24 exact comparisons passed. Separate conditional-format probe: all 12 configuration/fixture comparisons passed with expected color visibility. Owned Excel apps were cleaned up.

Review follow-up

  • Recheck Saved after each sheet's activation/calculation. A false or unreadable state invalidates saved fills for the current and all remaining sheets, including when a later sheet reports saved again.
  • Traverse stored openpyxl cells without creating absent cells. Excluding defaults retains only resolved colored cells; including defaults generates missing coordinates without enlarging the shared worksheet cell cache. A sparse 100,000 x 16,384 range regression retains just two saved cells.
  • Omit the misleading hybrid cells_context_display_format_calls measurement. Historical raw JSON remains unchanged and its false-zero field is explicitly documented; wrapper and per-sheet log counts remain authoritative.
  • Correct ADR/spec benchmark links and instantiate the native COM backend once.
  • Keep the user-requested 0.9.0 minor release preparation. Overriding private _extract_sheet_colors_com is not a documented public extension contract. CodeRabbit's default docstring percentage is not a repository CI requirement.
  • Validation after fixes: SKIP_COM_TESTS=1 with rtk uv run --all-extras pytest -m "not com and not render" -q: 1,138 passed, 1 skipped, 12 deselected, four existing DrawingML warnings. Ruff and mypy passed; lock and diff checks passed. Live Excel benchmarks were not rerun after these fixes.

The independent review below covers the original commit, before these follow-up changes. Dense conditional-format candidate sets and requested default-background output may still scale with UsedRange; these fixes do not introduce a resource-limit policy.

Independent review

Orca-supervised Codex gpt-6-luna / xhigh reviewed exact commit 7f882ab2c0b8027f21590a1cd81edcf87900f9d2 against 63b7596ace01dbf2c490f39e6bc158eaf66062a4: Approve, no actionable findings. The reviewer independently reran the 28 hybrid regression tests and checked benchmark evidence and fixture hashes. It did not rerun the full suite or live Excel measurements. The report was preserved locally; review-specific sessions and the temporary worktree were removed.

Remote CI is separate from these local results. This PR prepares release metadata; no tag, GitHub release or PyPI publication has been performed.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

This change adds hybrid color extraction for eligible saved .xlsx and .xlsm workbooks. It reads supported static fills from saved workbook data and uses Excel-rendered colors for candidate cells. Unsupported or failed cases use legacy COM scanning. The change also adds tests, benchmark tooling and records, specifications, and the 0.9.0 release entry.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c3165

The hybrid color extraction change falls back to the existing full scan for unsupported or failed cases, and no actionable merge-blocking issue remains in the reviewed changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to c3165

The existing interfaces and fallback behavior are preserved, but broad conditional-format ranges can trigger very large in-memory expansion. This introduces an availability concern when processing untrusted workbooks. Exposure beyond the extraction process depends on how the library is deployed.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A saved workbook with a large UsedRange and broad supported conditional formatting causes eager coordinate-set allocation before rendering or filtering. Compared with the prior streaming COM scan, this adds memory exhaustion pressure independent of output size and can weaken extraction-process failure containment. Catching allocation exceptions is not a substitute for bounding the expansion.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The availability concern is reachable when a caller processes an attacker-supplied eligible workbook with color extraction enabled. Memory pressure affects the process performing extraction; exposure of other tenants or services depends on unprovided deployment isolation. No new privileges are required beyond getting such a workbook processed through the existing interface.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Workbook-controlled conditional ranges and UsedRange feed an eager coordinate set, followed by sorting and intermediate color storage. Large intersections can amplify memory before ignored or default colors are removed. This is a source-supported availability concern, not a demonstrated exploit; the prior scan already permitted long-running workloads.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The saved reader remains behind the existing pipeline-owned Excel boundary. Path and Saved-state checks constrain snapshot selection, while strict candidate reads propagate failures instead of silently accepting partial results. These controls protect result selection but do not bound candidate memory.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Strict-render state is reset in finally, failed candidate reads discard partial maps, and managed session owners close resources during exception unwinding. Production pipeline evidence shows sequential use rather than concurrent sharing of one session; direct concurrent session use is not established as a supported contract.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Introduce an explicit candidate-expansion budget before allocation and use bounded iteration or batches where practical. For deployments accepting untrusted workbooks, enforce extraction memory and time limits in an isolated worker; choosing legacy fallback alone does not address its pre-existing execution-time exposure.
