MARC: bulk import/export and interactive copy cataloguing (0.9.0) - #505
Bulk MARC import/export and interactive copy cataloguing (SLiMS MARC import/export + copy cataloguing).
What it does
Shared, in-house MARC library in app/Support/Marc/ (no new dependency): streaming ISO 2709 and MARCXML readers/writers, MARC-8 → UTF-8 (basic Latin + ANSEL), format and flavour detection (MARC 21, UNIMARC, danMARC2). A record that cannot be read is reported at its position and the batch goes on.
MARC 21 mapper with the agreed field set; UNIMARC and danMARC2 go through the existing parsers behind one MarcLibriMapper interface (RelatorRoles, Danmarc2Parser, UnimarcLibriParser moved to core, z39-server keeps thin subclasses). The OAI-PMH server now builds its MARCXML/UNIMARC/ISO 2709 output from the shared BookMarcBuilder; golden files prove the output is byte-for-byte identical.
/admin/books/import/marc: preview of the first 10 mapped records with "already in catalogue" flags, chunked import through the CSV import's own row pipeline (CsvImportController::importParsedRow()), dedup on ISBN-13/ISBN-10/EAN among non-deleted books with skip / fill empty / overwrite, authors and publishers with the search for author Haffner #501 exact-spelling rules, cover from 856, error download, import history.
/admin/books/export/marc: whole catalogue or ?ids= selection, MARC 21 .mrc, MARCXML collection or UNIMARC, streamed, deleted books never included.
/admin/books/copy-cataloging: SruClient::search() multi-record search by title, author, ISBN/ISSN or all fields across configured SRU servers and presets (SBN, LoC, BnF, DNB, K10plus, another Pinakes install), record detail, multi-select import with dedup and cover. Our own SRU server now includes the cover in UNIMARC 856 (additive).
Choices: holdings fields (852/949/952) are not turned into copies; one upload is capped at 20,000 records.
Tests: unit marc-library 70, marc-oai-byte-identity 9, sru-search 17, migration section 8 (+ real Updater run); E2E marc-bulk-import 7, marc-bulk-export 7, marc-copy-cataloging 7 (deterministic, against this install's own SRU server); existing SRU/UNIMARC/OAI/danMARC2/import specs re-run green. restituito da `MarcLanguage::marcCodeOf()` con un campo `101` contenente un
sottocampo `$a` per ogni lingua dell’opera. Aggiorna `UnimarcLibriMapper`

MARC imports can update the wrong catalogue entry, and some import/export paths lose metadata or mishandle retries. Large SRU results can also exceed intended resource limits. Resolve the catalogue-integrity and recovery issues before merging; many earlier validation and cleanup problems are already fixed.

ℹ️ No blocking issues. Three minor points are inline.
Reviewed changes
I reviewed the whole PR at 88abf7d: the shared MARC library, the MARC import, export and copy-cataloguing flows, and how the OAI and z39 plugins now use the shared classes.
Shared MARC library (app/Support/Marc/): In-house ISO 2709 and MARCXML readers and writers, MARC-8 decoding, format and flavour detection, and mappers for MARC 21, UNIMARC and danMARC2. BookMarcBuilder is now the single serializer for both OAI-PMH and the export. The XML reader opens files with LIBXML_NONET and without LIBXML_NOENT, so external entities are never resolved.
CsvImportController::importParsedRow(): The per-row pipeline is moved out of processChunk unchanged, except that it now rolls back and rethrows itself. Its importSource sets the source recorded in the activity log and in contributor provenance.
MARC bulk import: Each record is staged as a JSON line, and chunks resume from a byte offset. A chunk is processed only when start matches the processed count, so a retried request does nothing. Duplicates are matched by ISBN-13, ISBN-10 or EAN among books that are not deleted, with skip, fill or overwrite mapped onto the CSV update families. Covers download through CoverController::downloadFromUrl. Runs are recorded in import_logs with type marc, and the migration that adds that type is idempotent.
MARC export: The catalogue or a selection of up to 1000 books is read in pages of 200 by id and streamed through a GeneratorStream that cannot be seeked. Deleted books are excluded.
Copy cataloguing (z39-server): Searches the configured SRU servers and presets. Results are kept on the server in the session, so an import uses what the catalogue sent rather than what the browser posts back. The view escapes every value it shows from a record.
Checks I ran: ci-check-locales.py passes, and the pure tests marc-library (70), sru-search (17) and contributor-plugin-compatibility-237 all pass. marc-oai-byte-identity needs a database and could not run here.

ℹ️ The three earlier points are fixed in c6b5354. Two minor issues remain inline. They are in code from the first review that the last run found but did not post.
Reviewed changes
Since the last review at 88abf7d, the branch was rebased. The only new commit is c6b5354, plus a blank line in CHANGELOG.md.
Steps after the commit now warn instead of fail: In MarcBookImporter::import, a failure in writeExtraColumns(), the copertina_url UPDATE or SearchIndexBuilder::rebuild() is now caught. It is added to $warnings and logged through SecureLogger. A book that was already committed is no longer counted as both imported and failed.
Local covers keep their real type: MarcCoverFetcher::copyLocal() now takes the extension from the image type that getimagesize() reports (jpg, png, webp or gif). Any other type is refused.
Listed duplicates are capped: MarcImportController::listSkippedDuplicate() lists at most MAX_LISTED_DUPLICATES (100) skipped duplicates in the session state and in import_logs. Any further ones are only counted in counters['skipped'].
New test: tests/marc-import-robustness.unit.php covers all three fixes. For the database part it adds a SIGNAL trigger so that the update of the extra columns fails.
Checks I ran: ci-check-locales.py passes. The parts of marc-import-robustness that need no database pass 7 of 7, with GD writing PNG, GIF, JPEG and WebP. Its database part needs .env and was skipped here.

⚠️Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
L'import conta quell'errore come fallito. Svuotate il buffer prima di ogni avanzamento del reader.

The additional comment on app/Support/Marc/MarcXmlReader.php (49-75, libxml's global error buffer) is fixed in 4f49cc3: the reader clears the buffer when it starts, keeps its own errors before each yield and clears what the consumer leaves between records, so only the reader's errors can mark the file as not well-formed. tests/marc-library.unit.php check 77 parses broken XML between two records of a well-formed file and expects no read error; check 30 (a file that breaks off) still reports its error.

Reviewed changes
Since the last review at c6b5354, the only new commit is 4f49cc3. It contains fixes for review feedback on encoding, languages, export and SRU queries.
CQL terms are always quoted: SruClient::cqlFor() now quotes every title, author and all-fields term. ISBN and ISSN digits are sent without quotes unless the server sets quote_search_terms. sru-search.unit.php runs the queries for dell'arte, and and not through the plugin's own CQLParser.
ISO 2709 encoding choice: When MARC-8 is forced, leader/09 is ignored, so MARC-8 records mislabelled a are decoded. In auto mode, a record whose leader says a but whose bytes are invalid UTF-8 is now reported at its position.
Export selection and oversized records: MarcExportController::parseIds() keeps only tokens made entirely of digits. A record that overflows ISO 2709 is built again with shortenTexts(), which cuts any text over 1000 characters. It is skipped only if it still does not fit.
Truncated staging file: MarcImportController::chunk returns a 500 error when it reads no line, so the page no longer asks for the same chunk forever. The page script also stops when a response shows no progress.
Language names map back to codes: MarcLanguage::codeFor() now also looks up the names in NAMES, so every name nameFor() stores maps back to its MARC code.
libxml error buffer: MarcXmlReader collects its own libxml errors and clears the buffer after each yield. Errors that a consumer leaves behind can no longer fail a well-formed file.
Copy-cataloguing result cap: Servers after MAX_RESULTS are no longer queried. They now appear in the report with a "limit reached" error instead of disappearing from it. MarcCoverFetcher::effectivePort() treats a default port written out (:443, :80) the same as no port, in the cover fetcher and in LocalSruClient::isLocalUrl.
Checks I ran: marc-library passes 80 of 80 and sru-search passes 24 of 24. The new copy-cataloging-limits passes 3 of 3 on its part that needs no database. Its result-cap part needs .env and was skipped here.
The OAI plugin's MARCXML, UNIMARC/MARCXchange and ISO 2709 output is about to move onto a shared MARC library in core. These goldens are taken from the current code, so the move can be proved byte for byte.
App\Support\Marc holds a neutral MarcRecord, streaming ISO 2709 and MARCXML readers and writers (MARC-8 to UTF-8 for Basic and Extended Latin, malformed records reported one by one without stopping the file), format detection, and mappers from MARC 21, UNIMARC and danMARC2 to book data. BookMarcBuilder turns a book into a MARC 21 or UNIMARC record for the OAI server and the bulk export alike. RelatorRoles, the danMARC2 reader and the UNIMARC reader move here from the z39-server plugin so the importer can share them.
The OAI server now builds its MARCXML, UNIMARC and ISO 2709 records with BookMarcBuilder and the shared writers; the golden files prove the output is byte for byte the same. The z39-server plugin keeps its RelatorRoles, Danmarc2Parser and UnimarcLibriParser names as thin subclasses of the core classes. The CSV import's row pipeline becomes importParsedRow(), so the MARC import can write books exactly as the CSV import does.
The fixtures are assembled by a serializer of their own, so the reader is not only tested against what the writer produces. The suite covers byte-for-byte and read-write-read round trips, MARC-8 diacritics, malformed records that must not stop the file, resuming at an offset, MARCXML inside an SRU envelope, format detection and the MARC 21, UNIMARC and danMARC2 mappings field by field. The role reader also learns the Italian "illustrazioni di".
/admin/books/import/marc reads ISO 2709 or MARCXML files (MARC 21, UNIMARC, danMARC2, told apart per record), stages them once, shows a preview of the first mapped records and imports in chunks through the CSV import's own row pipeline, so authors, publishers, copies, history and the error download behave as they do there. Duplicates are matched by ISBN-13, ISBN-10 or EAN among books not deleted and are skipped, completed or overwritten as chosen; covers come from 856. /admin/books/export/marc streams the catalogue or a selection as MARC 21, MARCXML or UNIMARC with the OAI server's serializer. import_logs.import_type gains 'marc' (migrate_0.9.0.sql).
The Export menu offers MARC 21 (.mrc), MARCXML and UNIMARC for the whole catalogue, and the bulk bar gains "Esporta in MARC" for the selected books. The specs read each export back with the shared library and re-import it without duplicates.
…sen records
SruClient::search() and searchServer() return every record of a CQL query (title, author, ISBN/ISSN or all fields, with each server's own index names), read with the shared MARC library. /admin/books/copy-cataloging searches the configured SRU servers, SBN, Library of Congress, BnF, DNB, K10plus and this installation's own SRU server, shows each record with its MARC detail and imports the selected ones through the MARC importer, with its duplicate modes and cover download. This installation's server is answered in-process, so the specs need no network.
The UNIMARC records of the SRU server now carry the cover in 856 too, and the plugin settings gain an "other Pinakes installation" preset whose title and author indexes are kept on save. The plugin's views folder is no longer git-ignored.
The OAI server's MARC 21 and UNIMARC role mapping now lives in BookMarcBuilder; the test reads and invokes it there and still checks that the OAI plugin builds its UNIMARC through it.
…p listed duplicates
Once importParsedRow() has committed the book, a failure of the extra MARC columns, the cover update or the search index rebuild is reported as a warning on the imported record instead of a failed record, so the summary no longer counts it twice while the book stays in the catalogue.
A cover copied from this installation is stored with the extension of its image type (WebP and GIF kept as such, not renamed .jpg).
Skipped duplicates are listed in the run report up to 100; beyond that they are only counted, so re-importing a whole export does not grow the session and the import log by one entry per record.
…t and SRU queries
ISO 2709: forcing MARC-8 now reads records mislabelled leader/09 = a, and in auto mode a record labelled UTF-8 is checked and reported at its position when its bytes are not UTF-8.
MarcXmlReader keeps its own libxml errors and drops those a consumer leaves between two records, so a well-formed file is no longer reported as broken.
MarcLanguage::codeFor() also recognises every native name nameFor() stores (Русский, 中文, Suomi, Latina...), so the language survives an import and export.
MARC export: only all-digit ids are accepted (12abc is not book 12), and a record over the ISO 2709 limit is written with its long texts shortened instead of being dropped from the file.
MARC import: a chunk that reads nothing (staged file truncated) answers with an error, and the page stops when a chunk does not advance.
Copy cataloguing: text terms are always quoted in CQL (dell'arte, and), only ISBN/ISSN digits go bare; servers after the 100-result cap are listed as not queried instead of vanishing from the report; https://host and https://host:443 are the same local endpoint, also for local covers. The E2E removes the import_logs rows its imports write.
searchServer() made one request: a dropped connection or an empty body
on the first try reported the server as failed with zero records. The
transport now goes through fetchSearchWithRetry(), the same bounded
retry the ISBN lookup has (maxRetries, exponential backoff, no retry on
an HTTP 4xx), with every attempt under the per-server rate limit. The
CQL query and the record limit are sent unchanged, and a server's own
diagnostic is never retried.
The same host with another path (/other, /api/sru/extra) is not this
installation's SRU server; a trailing slash on /api/sru still is.
isLocalUrl() already compares the path, so only the test is added.

Reviewed changes
I reviewed the 14 PR commits since fb23d82 (e528b38e..48527478). The two feat/stocktake merges (9611a6b, cb1882a) touch only base-PR files.
Import chunks tied to their preview.upload now issues a staging_id. chunk and discard refuse a stale id with a 409. A replayed final chunk gets the stored result back, and a retried history save completes the same import_logs row through the new ImportLogger::resume().
Fill mode adds only the book's own ISBN. In fill mode, the empty ISBN-10 or ISBN-13 is filled only when it is the other form of the ISBN the book already has.
Replaced cover files removed. An overwrite import now deletes the replaced /uploads/copertine/ file once no live book references it.
UNIMARC export carries more fields. It now writes the 181 RDA content type, the series ISSN in 225 $x, and the legacy translator, illustrator and editor columns as 702. The mapper reads all of them back, and the golden files were re-recorded.
Overlapping ISO 2709 directory entries refused. The reader now rejects them.
Single OAI .mrc download falls back like the bulk export. It tries the full, shortened and reduced records in turn, using the new MarcExportController::REDUCED_* constants.
SRU client hardened. The search now retries transport failures, and hits that cannot be read are reported as errors. Unmapped servers get a bare isbn fallback. APCu rate-limit slots are reserved atomically, and in-process answers are capped at 16 MiB.
Copy cataloguing limits. Disabled servers are skipped and the session data is capped at 4 MiB. An ISSN search on SBN is refused with a message, and the import history counts each id once.
Tests run locally: marc-library 138/138, sru-search 40/40 (42/42 with -d apc.enable_cli=1), marc-oai-byte-identity 9/9. Only the non-DB part of copy-cataloging-limits (10/10) and marc-import-robustness (30/30) could run here.
Replies to the follow-up findings listed in the body of the latest CodeRabbit review on this PR:
Fixed in 398363e. searchServer() now fetches through fetchSearchWithRetry(), a bounded retry (maxRetries, default 2, exponential backoff, no retry on HTTP 4xx) with every attempt under the per-server rate limit; the CQL query and the record limit are sent unchanged, and a server's own diagnostic is never retried.
Fixed in 4852747. Added the case: the same host with a different path (/other, /api/sru/extra) is not this server, while /api/sru/ with a trailing slash still is; isLocalUrl() already compared the path, so only the test was needed.
The docblock of bookToFittingIso2709() had been inserted between bookToIso2709() and its own description, so PHP attached the wrong comment to both methods.
fetchUrl() reported every transport failure as "Connection failed", so the search and ISBN retry loops repeated a server that accepted the connection and then hung (about 3 x 15 s in a copy cataloguing search that asks servers one after another) and an answer over max_bytes.
HttpClient now says which kind of transport failure it was (blocked, connect, timeout, too_large). SruClient maps a timeout and an oversized answer (and LocalSruClient's own "Response too large") to a NOT_RETRYABLE exception code; a refused or reset connection, an empty body and an HTTP 5xx stay retryable, an HTTP 4xx is still not retried. No retry starts once the attempts have used one request timeout. The per-attempt timeout is unchanged.

Reviewed changes
I reviewed bcad522, the one commit since the last review. It fixes the open retry-on-timeout thread. I replied on that thread, but GitHub rate-limited the API call that resolves it, so it is still marked open.
Typed transport failures in HttpClient: A failed request now carries an error kind: blocked, connect, timeout or too_large. The kind comes from the cURL error number and from the messages thrown by the max_bytes and SSRF-redirect guards.
SruClient retry policy: fetchUrl() marks a timeout or an oversized answer NOT_RETRYABLE. Both retry loops now go through isRetryable(). It also stops retrying once the attempts have used one request timeout. LocalSruClient::readBounded() marks its own "Response too large" the same way.
Tests: sru-search gets a httpGet() test seam and new cases for each failure kind (18e–18n, 23). Some cases run against real local sockets. Locally, sru-search passes 51/51 and plugin-audit-hardening-regressions passes 33/33.

A request the SSRF guard refuses is now marked not retryable, like a
timeout or an oversized answer. The ISBN lookup no longer falls back to the
bare isbn index after a timeout, a blocked request or an HTTP 4xx other
than 400, and the search retry budget counts the backoff and rate-limit
waits, so a queued slot cannot hold the page past the timeout.
A DBC OpenSearch server without an index map gets its own term.* indexes
in the copy cataloguing search, and a positive hit count with no record in
a readable format is reported instead of showing "0 of 1".
The detail view of a result listed every MARC field of every record, mapped
or not, outside the size cap that bounds the book data in the session. It
now lists at most 300 fields, each cut to 2000 characters with a note of how
many were left out, and its size counts against the same 4 MiB cap.
The limits test also checks that a search of this installation's own SRU
URL is answered by the in-process endpoint rather than over HTTP.
ids[]=12&ids[]=13 is not the comma-separated list the export reads; it was
turned into an empty selection and answered with an empty download. It is
now refused with a message, back on the book list.
A record with some 340 fields or more has a directory longer than the 4096
bytes read to tell the container, so its first field terminator was never
seen and a valid file was refused as unrecognisable. The detection now
reads up to the base address of data (leader 12-16) and checks the
terminator just before it.
upload() dropped the previous staging file and session state before
writing the new one, so an upload that failed (no records, a write error)
left the earlier preview on screen with nothing behind it. The old preview
is now discarded only once the new file is staged.
The robustness test fails under CI_STRICT_TESTS when .env is missing and
otherwise prints a SKIP: line the unit runner recognises.
…field
The UNIMARC record wrote only the first ISBN and the first language, so a
re-import lost the ISBN-10 and every language after the first. It now
writes a 010 for each ISBN form and one 101 $a per language, and the mapper
reads every 101 $a.
The genre moves from a 606 $2 local to a 608 $2 local, the UNIMARC form /
genre access point that matches the MARC 21 655. Every 606 is now read as a
keyword, so another catalogue's local subjects are no longer taken as the
genre and dropped from the keywords. The OAI golden files are re-recorded
for the three deliberate changes.
- The title + first author duplicate check only counts a principal author:
a book where that person is only the translator is not a duplicate.
- A record whose ISBN and EAN (or ISBN forms) belong to two different books
is refused in fill and overwrite mode instead of writing one work's data
into the other.
- Overwrite clears the book's other ISBN form when it is not the same ISBN
as the one the record carries.
- Fill adds the record's colorist to a book without one even when every
legacy contributor column is set (the colorist has no such column).
The server accepts .marcxml but the file picker and Uppy refused it before
upload. The notice about holdings said every book gets a copy; only a book
the import creates does, a book already in the catalogue keeps its own.
The ISO 2709 download of one book answered 200 with no sign that the record
had been shortened or reduced to fit 99,999 bytes, or that a field had been
cut to the 9,999-byte limit. It now sets X-Pinakes-Record-Fit (shortened or
reduced) and X-Pinakes-Fields-Cut, and logs each case as the bulk export
does.
The page now sends an import token it keeps until an import succeeds. The
same request sent again after its answer was lost (same token, ids, mode
and covers) gets the first answer back from the session, so an overwrite is
not written twice and the history gets one entry. A deliberate re-import
carries a new token.
The z39 SRU server's UNIMARC/XML formatter still wrote the genre as a plain
606, which the UNIMARC mapper now reads as a keyword, so a copy catalogued
from another Pinakes lost its genre. Both writers now take the field from
one place, BookMarcBuilder::unimarcGenreField(), and the formatter writes
it after the 606 keywords as the builder does.
Replies to the nitpick and outside-diff findings in the body of the latest CodeRabbit review on this PR:
Keep the previous staging until the new file is ready — Fixed in c47b81f. upload() now calls discardStaging() only after the new file is fully staged, just before the session state is replaced. An upload that fails (no records, a write error) leaves the previous preview and its staging file importable. A DB-backed check in marc-import-robustness.unit.php covers it.
Treat MARC-8 records with a blank leader/09 as MARC-8 when the UTF-8 and MARC-8 readings differ — Not changed. Any non-ASCII UTF-8 byte sequence is also a valid MARC-8 byte sequence, so the two readings differ for every record that has a non-ASCII character. Refusing on divergence would refuse every genuine UTF-8 record whose leader/09 is blank, which is very common. Auto mode follows the usual heuristic (an ESC byte means MARC-8; otherwise valid UTF-8 is read as UTF-8), and the import page's encoding selector forces MARC-8 for a mislabelled file.
Save progress with a durable checkpoint for each record — Not changed. The replay is already safe for the data: a record committed just before a crash is found by the duplicate check on retry, so no second book is created, and fill or overwrite rewrites the same values. Only that one record's counter can move from imported to skipped. A durable checkpoint per record would mean reopening and rewriting the session file after every row, and it still would not be atomic with the database commit.
Handle replays of copy cataloguing IDs — Fixed in 412826f. The page now sends an import token that it keeps until an import succeeds. CopyCataloging::import() keeps the last token, the request fingerprint (ids, mode, covers) and the answer in the session. The same request sent again after a lost answer gets the first answer back, so an overwrite is not written twice and the history gets one entry. A deliberate re-import sends a new token. Tests 16 and 17 in copy-cataloging-limits.unit.php cover it.
Add a check of the local dispatch — Fixed in c8f1a3d. Test 13d searches this installation's own /api/sru URL through LocalSruClient, with a plugin id that has no settings, and checks that the answer is the endpoint's own 'Server is currently disabled' error, which only the in-process handleSRURequest() can produce. I confirmed it fails when fetchUrl() is forced onto HTTP.
Add a test for a structured HTTP 404 response — Fixed in f111fbe. Test 18p feeds httpGet() an {ok: true, status: 404} answer and checks that it is reported as 'HTTP 404 error from server' after a single request.
Add create-then-reimport coverage — Fixed in f01a4a4. A new check imports a brand-new record (no ISBN, new author, nothing on file) twice through the CSV pipeline in skip mode, then checks it was created and then skipped, leaving one book with one principal author link.

I reviewed the 11 PR commits since bcad522 (f111fbe3..7bbb3122). The feat/stocktake merge fd6b984 only touches stocktake and inventory files from the base PR. MARC/SRU unit suites pass locally: marc-library 149/149, sru-search 59/59, copy-cataloging-limits 10/10 (pure), marc-import-robustness 32/32 (pure), unimarc-standards 17/17, marc-oai-byte-identity 9/9.
SRU retry budget and blocked requests: Made SSRF-blocked requests non-retryable, and the timeout budget now counts from the first request, backoff and rate-limit waits included. The ISBN lookup only falls back to the bare isbn index after an HTTP 400 or a transient failure.
SRU result reporting: Reported a positive hit count with no readable record as an error, and added term.* default indexes for DBC OpenSearch servers that have no index map.
Copy cataloguing bounds and replay: Capped the per-record detail at 300 fields of 2000 characters each, and the detail now counts against the 4 MiB cap. A lost import answer is replayed through an import_token and request fingerprint instead of running the import a second time.
MARC import matching: Fill and overwrite now refuse records whose ISBN or EAN match different books. Title+author dedup only uses principal authors. Fill adds a colorist when the book has none. Overwrite clears an other-form ISBN that belongs to a different work, and updateBook writes it as NULL, so the unique keys stay satisfied.
UNIMARC output: Wrote one 010 per ISBN form, one 101 $a per language and the genre as 608 $2 local through the shared unimarcGenreField(), which the SRU formatter uses too. The mapper reads these back, and every 606 is now a keyword.
ISO 2709 detection: Required the field terminator right before the base address, and read past 4096 bytes when the directory is longer than that.
Import, export and download edges: Dropped the previous staged import only after the new file is staged, refused array ids on export, and accepted .marcxml on the page. The single .mrc download now reports a shortened or reduced record and cut fields in X-Pinakes-* headers.
