Problem and user-visible impact

Loading back-button in my normal Neomacs configuration aborted initialization with:

Key sequence <tool-bar> S-<back-button> starts with non-prefix key <tool-bar>

The relevant configuration was:

(setq back-button-local-keystrokes nil)
(require 'back-button)
(back-button-mode 1)

back-button-show-toolbar-buttons defaults to non-nil. While require loads the package, its top-level toolbar setup installs bindings including:

(define-key global-map (kbd "<tool-bar> <S-back-button>")
  'back-button-local-backward)

This failed before initialization could reach (back-button-mode 1), so the rest of my configuration did not finish loading. Setting back-button-local-keystrokes to nil only changes the package's local keyboard shortcuts; it does not disable this toolbar setup.

Why the prefix was rejected

The toolbar prefix is provided by lisp/tool-bar.el as a filtered menu item:

(global-set-key [tool-bar]
                '(menu-item "tool bar" ignore
                            :filter tool-bar-make-keymap))

The apparent command, ignore, is not the final binding: the :filter computes the keymap that should be used for the toolbar prefix.

Previously, builtin_define_key walked intermediate events through list_keymap_define_seq_in_obarray_ex, using the lookup path without runtime filter evaluation. It therefore rejected this menu item as a non-prefix binding before the filter could supply its keymap. GNU Emacs resolves menu-item filters during prefix lookup before deciding whether to descend into a keymap, create a missing prefix, or signal an error.

Change

Route Lisp define-key through list_keymap_define_seq_runtime_ex, which uses the existing runtime-aware keymap access path for intermediate events. This allows filters to run and propagates their Lisp errors through the normal evaluation path.

The walk retains the existing behavior for missing prefixes, genuine non-prefix bindings, and the optional REMOVE argument. Prefix lookup still uses noinherit, so defining a child binding does not mutate an inherited parent keymap. The stored menu-item wrapper remains intact when the filter returns a prefix keymap. Because filters can execute arbitrary Lisp, the walk roots the active keymaps, definition, and events across filter calls, including keymaps returned only by a filter.

Minimal reproduction, without external packages

Save the following as /tmp/neomacs-pr627-repro.el. It constructs the same kind of filtered toolbar prefix using a private keymap, so no plugin installation, personal configuration, or graphical toolbar is needed. The command symbol is only stored as a binding and does not need to be defined.

;;; neomacs-pr627-repro.el --- Filtered prefix reproduction -*- lexical-binding: t; -*-
(let ((map (make-sparse-keymap))
      (toolbar (make-sparse-keymap)))
  (define-key map [tool-bar]
    (list 'menu-item "tool bar" 'ignore
          :filter (lambda (_command) toolbar)))
  (let ((stored (cdr (assq 'tool-bar map))))
    (define-key map [tool-bar S-back-button] 'back-button-local-backward)
    (prin1 (list (lookup-key toolbar [S-back-button])
                 (eq (cdr (assq 'tool-bar map)) stored)))
    (terpri)
    (define-key map [tool-bar S-back-button] nil t)
    (prin1 (lookup-key toolbar [S-back-button]))
    (terpri)))

Run from the repository root:

./target/release/neomacs --batch -Q -l /tmp/neomacs-pr627-repro.el

# GNU Emacs reference:
emacs --batch -Q -l /tmp/neomacs-pr627-repro.el

Before this fix, the second define-key call rejects [tool-bar S-back-button] as starting with a non-prefix key. With this fix, both Neomacs and GNU Emacs print:

(back-button-local-backward t)
nil

The first line confirms that the binding was installed in the keymap returned by the filter and that the stored menu-item wrapper was preserved. The second line confirms that REMOVE traverses the same filtered prefix and removes the leaf binding.

Validation

  • Ran the minimal script above with the patched release executable and GNU Emacs; their output matched.
  • Ran the existing neovm-core unit-test executable with the define_key_ filter: 6 passed, 0 failed. This includes the three new regression tests covering filtered-prefix definition/removal and filter call counts, nil versus non-prefix filter results, and parent-keymap isolation, plus the existing optional-remove, event-normalization, and prefix-symbol tests.

To run the relevant unit tests through Cargo:

cargo test -p neovm-core --lib define_key_ -- --test-threads=1

Walkthrough

define-key now uses runtime keymap resolution for key sequences. Tests cover defining and removing bindings through filtered prefixes, as well as behavior when filters return nil or a non-prefix command.

Changes: Filtered keymap definition

Layer / File(s) Summary
Runtime sequence resolution
crates/neovm-core/src/emacs_core/commands/keymap/mod.rs
The runtime helper handles empty and single-event sequences. For longer sequences, it resolves intermediate bindings with filters enabled, creates missing prefixes, and signals an error for an existing non-prefix binding.
define-key integration and tests
crates/neovm-core/src/emacs_core/lisp/native/builtins/keymaps.rs, crates/neovm-core/src/emacs_core/commands/interactive/tests/interactive_test.rs
builtin_define_key delegates to the runtime helper. Tests check binding and removal through filtered prefixes, parent-map bindings, and filter results that are nil or non-prefix commands.

Removing a binding through a filtered prefix can leave key-location queries reporting the old binding. The narrow trigger makes this a bounded merge risk, but the cache should be invalidated after removal.

Explanation

The description explains the problem (back-button toolbar setup aborting with a non-prefix key error), the root cause (define-key walking intermediate events without runtime menu-item filter evaluation), the code change (routing Lisp define-key through list_keymap_define_seq_runtime_ex), and includes a reproduction script and test results. It directly relates to the changeset's added function, the keymaps.rs change, and the new tests. The description is specific and on-topic.

Invalidate the keymap cache after removals.

When a menu-item filter calls where-is-internal during define-key m [prefix leaf] nil t, the reverse index can record prefix leaf before list_keymap_remove deletes it. list_keymap_remove does not bump KEYMAP_MUTATION_EPOCH, so a later where-is-internal call can reuse the index and return the removed sequence.

Suggested fix
 pub fn list_keymap_remove(keymap: Value, event: Value, symbol_mode: SymbolMode) {
+    note_keymap_mutation();
     store_in_keymap(keymap, event, Value::NIL, true, symbol_mode);
 }
