With word-wrap enabled, Neomacs treated CJK text without spaces as one word even when word-wrap-by-category was non-nil. The reported supertag v0.4 + 60 CJK characters broke at the preceding space in both settings. Honor GNU's category rules in motion fallback, live row production and worker replay: | permits a following break; < and > enforce kinsoku restrictions. The nil option preserves whitespace-only wrapping. Custom buffer category tables work for ASCII as well as CJK.
Typed modes, direction and boundary opportunities share one Rust rule. An opaque immutable native range snapshot carries the selected buffer's rules into retained keys, live layout and workers, with Send + Sync asserted at compile time. Motion refreshes that snapshot after callback-capable display stops; ordinary characters perform no variable/category-table lookup. Overflow decisions copy only the optional break checkpoint.
Per-buffer projection reuse uses existing collection dependency certificates, qualified by source-table identity and reclamation epoch. Hits replay dependencies into enclosing observations; replacement, parent/default changes and direct category-set mutation invalidate reuse. Mutator-local certificates remain separate from the worker-safe policy. The inherited-set regression exposed packed bool-vector writes bypassing the journal; the centralized mutation helper now records revisions before modifying bits, covering aset, fills and other shared mutators while preserving the existing mutation guard.
The GUI fixture pins a shared CJK font, checks equal body/character/pixel widths, then compares absolute CJK, ASCII and kinsoku positions against live GNU. Research, GNU source comparisons and validation limits are recorded in docs/research/issue-623-category-word-wrap.md.
Preserved the original failing regression as the first commit: OK (24 2 15 15) became GNU's expected OK (24 2 19 15). A real row-producer regression independently failed before the layout fix, then passed.
796 unit/layout tests pass: 693 core and collection-observation tests, plus 103 layout, worker, position-query and chrome tests. This includes main's native-font authority tests and a new warm position-query regression across option changes, direct category-set mutation and table replacement.
The resource regression reproduced 2,400 extra symbol reads per 1,200-column row before the fix; it now passes a bounded lookup budget. In an optimized test setup, 500 projection captures fell from 503 ms to 6.7 ms. This measures projection capture, not whole-editor latency; the temporary timing harness was removed.
Independent standards and spec reviews found no blocking issue, including the native lifetime/mutation protocol and the integration with main's shaping/visibility/cache-partition changes. Both conflicting worker tests were preserved during the rebase.
All 14 selected category/scanner tests pass with display-stop-validate enabled.
Full cargo xtask fresh-build --release succeeds with bytecode and dump regeneration; the resulting binary reports commit e1616d0af8.
Two live GNU oracle tests pass in verify mode, covering CJK, custom ASCII categories and kinsoku. They run real private PTY event loops because GNU --batch is inert for this behavior.
One paired TUI test and two private-display GUI tests pass, including exact category/kinsoku results and surface readback.
The original 80-column private GUI reproduction matches GNU: both editors return row start 52 when enabled and 15 when disabled.
All test commands use cargo nextest; GUI sessions use private displays. TUI assertions check live motion and visible CJK row lengths, then compare exact screens after closing the temporary split.

The code derives whitespace or category-based wrap opportunities from buffer settings and category tables. Motion refreshes the policy after eligible display probes. The buffer caches derived policies, and bool-vector mutation records collection revision changes.
Word-wrap state records optional break candidates. Overflow decisions and actions consume those candidates.

Explanation
Directly linked issue #623 requires category-aware wrapping when word-wrap-by-category is non-nil. It requires whitespace-only wrapping when the option is nil. It requires GNU char_can_wrap_before/after rules for the | category and the kinsoku categories.
Evidence at head:
crates/neovm-core/src/window/word_wrap.rs implements WordWrapMode::opportunity. Whitespace mode allows a break before non-whitespace and after whitespace only. Category mode allows a break after a | character when no < is present, and before a character when no > is present (reversed direction swaps the kinsoku ends). Code 0 has no categories. This matches the GNU rules cited in the issue and in the PR.
crates/neovm-core/src/window/display.rs (layout_word_wrap_policy) and crates/neomacs-layout-engine/src/neovm_bridge.rs select category mode only when word-wrap and word-wrap-by-category are both effective. Otherwise they select whitespace mode.
The shared policy is consumed by the motion fallback in crates/neovm-core/src/emacs_core/editing/indent/mod.rs, by WordWrapRenderState in crates/neomacs-layout-engine/src/display_row/walk_state.rs (for_char, checkpoint), by RowProgramGeometry in row_layout/program.rs, and by the retained key RetainedWindowKey in incremental_layout.rs. Worker replay therefore uses the same rules.
Category tables are read natively through category_bit_runs_in_table and cached per buffer with collection dependency certificates. Freshness covers option changes, table replacement, and direct category-set mutation.
Tests named in the PR (window_cmds_test CJK and custom-category cases, category_word_wrap_test, program_test worker replay, the TUI motion test, and the GUI and oracle tests) cover these objectives. I did not rerun them. The PR reports their results, and it states that the final live tests for the review follow-up commit are being repeated.
Minor observation: the issue table lists GNU first-row-ends-at=53 on macOS. The PR reports 52 from its own private GUI probe. The GUI test compares against live GNU at runtime, not against a fixed number, so this does not block the verdict.
No unmet coding requirement is found in the code at head.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes fall into these groups, and each one connects to #623:
Wrap rules and policy: word_wrap.rs, indent/mod.rs, walk_state.rs, overflow and char_render changes, row_layout/program.rs, types.rs, neovm_bridge.rs, window/display.rs, window/mod.rs. These implement the category-aware break rules and their use in motion, row production, and worker replay.
Freshness and retained keys: incremental_layout.rs, scroll_coverage.rs, and the test fixtures that initialize word_wrap_policy with its default value. These implement the requirement that option and table changes invalidate layout.
Buffer cache and category runs: buffer.rs (per-buffer policy cache), category/mod.rs (category_bit_runs_in_table). These support the category-table data used by the policy. The cache is a performance measure for the policy projection, and it stays tied to the same freshness rules.
Bool-vector journaling: tagged/mutate.rs (with_bool_vector_mut) and runtime/value/mod.rs. These centralize journaling for bool-vector writes. The PR states that packed category-set bits written through direct category mutation must be journaled so that cached policies stay fresh. The change touches shared mutators such as aset and fills. This is wider than #623 alone, but the PR gives a concrete dependency on category freshness for it. I found no demonstrated unrelated use.
Tests and harnesses: window_cmds_test, category_word_wrap_test, program_test, editing_motion TUI test, the GUI fixture and test, oracle_category_word_wrap, and visibility changes in oracle common.rs. These validate the #623 behavior.
Documentation: docs/research/issue-623-category-word-wrap.md. It records research for #623.
No change is shown to be unrelated to #623. The bool-vector journaling change is the broadest item, and it has a stated link to the category-freshness requirement.

🟡 Changes recommended
An unresolved moderate finding remains: the per-character observe path re-resolves word-wrap-by-category (and the category table) on every scanned character, adding avoidable lookup overhead on long lines that should be hoisted to scan start.
This PR implements GNU Emacs's word-wrap-by-category behavior in Neomacs, fixing #623 where CJK text with no spaces was treated as one unbreakable word under word-wrap. It introduces a shared Rust rule (WordWrapPolicy/WordWrapMode/WordWrapOpportunity) modeling GNU's char_can_wrap_before/char_can_wrap_after predicates (the | line-breakable category plus the </> kinsoku restrictions), and wires it into both the motion fallback and the layout row producers (live and worker).
Changes:
New window/word_wrap.rs defining an opaque, Send + Sync, value-comparable WordWrapPolicy that freezes only native category bits (|/</>) into sorted ranges, plus category projection helpers in text/category/mod.rs.
Threaded the policy through WindowParams/RowProgramGeometry/RetainedWindowKey/BufferLayoutInputState so option changes, category-table replacement, and direct category-set mutations drive freshness/invalidation; the overflow path now carries only an Option<WordWrapBreakCandidate> to avoid per-char Arc clones.
Replaced the hard-coded whitespace-only predicates in indent/mod.rs and walk_state.rs with the category-aware rule, and added oracle/TUI/GUI/layout/window-cmd regression tests plus a research doc.

Design/validation notes.
I found one notable concern: the motion-fallback observe recomputes the word-wrap-by-category variable (an unslotted global, so the out-of-line obarray lookup) — and in category mode the active category table — for every scanned character, where the mode is invariant across a single screen-line scan. The core GNU-parity logic itself looks correct, the variable wiring (strum kebab-case sym_id, captures_default for the global, inclusive-end range semantics) is consistent, and the whitespace-default path preserves prior behavior.

🔵 Needs a closer look
An unresolved moderate performance finding remains, where the per-glyph observe callback redundantly re-resolves the invariant word-wrap mode and category table O(n) times per screen line instead of freezing them once per scan.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
🔵 Needs a closer look
The change rewrites every bool-vector mutation path through a central journaling revision and adds new worker Send/Sync and unsafe pre_exec PTY code, a blast radius wide enough that human validation of the full test matrix is needed.
GNU's char_can_wrap_after / char_can_wrap_before consult the `|`
(LINE_BREAKABLE) category and the kinsoku `'<'`/`'>'` categories when
word-wrap-by-category is non-nil, so a CJK run with no spaces may wrap
between characters. Neomacs hard-codes the nil branch at both wrap
points, so the reported probe stops at the preceding ASCII space in
both settings.
Pin GNU 31.1's answer for a 24-column TTY window: 19 with the variable
non-nil and 15 with it nil. The test is red until the category rule
reaches both wrap-point implementations.

🔵 Needs a closer look
The change modifies correctness-critical GC mutation journaling and retained-row cache invalidation whose parity can only be confirmed through live GNU Emacs and GUI/PTY tests unavailable in this environment, leaving verification beyond what can be confirmed here.
